less time on the sites the least we can do is consider what we've done and think about the young people the future and individually collectively do the best we can to try and turn this thing around I blame no one I look in the mirror on the other side of it what an opportunity we have because tomorrow's the first day of the rest of our lives so what an opportunity we have to practice what he preached everything that I have is by the grace of God understand that it's a gift 40 years ago March 27th 1975 there was 40 years ago I was flunking out of college at a 1.7 grade point average I hope none of you can relate I was 20 years old I was at my lowest point and then one day and I remember the exact day March 27 1975 I was helping my mother in her beauty shop my mother owned a beauty shop up in Mount Vernon and there's there was this older woman who was considered one of the elders in the town and I didn't know her personally but I was looking in the mirror and every time I looked at the mirror I could see her behind me and she was staring at she just kept looking at every time I looked at it she kept giving me these strange looks she said young boy I have a prophecy a spiritual prophecy she said you are going to travel the world and speak to millions of people now mind you I'm 20 years old I'm flunked out of school I'm thinking about joining the army I didn't know what I was gonna do and she's telling me I'm gonna travel the world and speak to millions of people but maybe she was on to something because later that summer while working as a counselor at the YMCA Camp in Connecticut we put on a talent show for the campers and after the show another counselor came up to me and asked have you ever thought about acting you're good at that so when I got back to Fort on that fall I got in and I changed my major once again for the last time and in the years that followed just as that woman prophesized the Oscar - I have traveled the world and I have spoken to millions of people through my movie Oh God is good god is great god is great from the bottom of my heart I thank you all so you are what you are in this world that's even one or two chains give you somebody nobody in the acting business you fail all the time early on in my career I auditioned for a part in a Broadway musical perfect role for me I thought except for the fact that I can't sing I didn't get the job your life will never be a straight path but here's the thing I didn't quit I didn't fall back I walked out of there to prepare for the next audition and the next audition and the next audition I prayed I prayed and I prayed but I continued to fail and fail and fail but it didn't matter because you know what there's an old saying you hang around the barbershop long enough sooner or later you're gonna get a haircut so you will catch a break and I did catch a break I did a play called fences on Broadway but here's the kicker it was at the Court Theatre he was at the same theatre that I failed that first audition 30 years prior but that's not the most important thing the success that I had the most important thing is that what she taught me and what she told me that day has stayed with me since I've been protected I've been directed I've been corrected I've kept God in my life and has kept me humble I didn't always stick with him but he always stuck with me so stick with him in everything you do if you think you want to do what you think I've done then do what I've done and stick with God when I starting to really make it as an actor I came in I talked to my mother I said ma did you think that this was gonna happen I'd be so big and I'll be able to take care of everybody and I didn't do this and I can do that and I can she said boy stop it right there stop it right there stop it right there he said if you only knew how many people that have been praying for you how many prayer groups she put together how many crab claws she gave me how many times she splashed me with holy water she said oh you did it by yourself I tell you what you can do by yourself and go outside get a mop and a bucket and wash the windows you can do that by yourself I'm gonna tell it about two three stories I'm gonna keep it real short number one put God first put God first in everything you do and stick with God number two fail big that's right fail big so do what you feel passionate about take chances don't be afraid to fail don't be afraid to think outside the box don't be afraid to fail big to dream big but remember dreams without goals are just dreams and they ultimately fuel disappointment so have dreams but have goals life goals yearly goals monthly goals daily goals I try to give myself a goal every day have goals and understand that to achieve these goals you must apply discipline and consistency in order to achieve your goals you must apply discipline and consistency every day not just want to Zay and miss a few days you have to work at it every day you have to plan every day you heard the saying we don't plan to fail we fail to plan hard work works working really hard is what successful people do remember just because you're doing a lot more doesn't mean you're getting a lot more done don't confuse movement with progress my mother told me so yeah yeah cuz you've been running place all the time and never get anywhere so continue to strive continue to have goals continue to progress I found that nothing in life is worthwhile unless you take risks nothing Nelson Mandela said there is no passion to be found playing small and settling for a life that's less than the one you're capable of living you will fail at some point in your life accept it you will embarrass yourself I'm telling embracing because it's inevitable and I should know if you don't fail you're not even trying I'll say it again if you don't fail you're not even trying my wife told me this great expression to get something you never had you have to do something you never did taking risk is not just about going for a job it's also about knowing what you know and what you don't know it's about being open to people and to ideas to not only take risks but to be open to life to accept new views and to be open to new opinions sometimes it's the best way to figure out where you're going because the chances you take the people you meet the people you love the faith that you have that's what's going to define you let's Browns the motivational speaker you made an analogy about this he says imagine you're on your deathbed and standing around your deathbed are the ghosts representing your unfulfilled potential the ghosts of the ideas you never acted on the ghosts of the talents you didn't use and they're standing around your bed angry disappointed and upset they say we came to you because you could have brought us to life they say and now we have to go to the grave together if I'm going to fall I don't want to fall back on anything except my faith I want to fall forward I figure at least this way I'll see what I'm going to hit Reggie Jackson struck out 26 hundred times in his career the most in the history of baseball people remember the homeruns Thomas Edison conducted 1000 failed experiments the 1,000 and first was the light bulb every failed experiment is one step closer to success you've got to take risks so you got to get out there you got to give it everything you got whether it's your time your talent your prayers or your treasures I don't care how much money you make you can't take it with you and it's not how much you have it's what you do with what you have so the question is what are you going to do with what you have I'm not talking about how much you have whatever your gift is what are you going to do with what you have we all have different talents some of you will be doctors some lawyers some scientists some educating some nurses some preachers some of you have patients some of you have kindness some of you have loved the world needs a lot and we need it from you the good feeling that I get from helping others that's where the joy is in helping others that's where the success is in helping others nothing's better than that finally say thank you for grace thank you for mercy thank you for understanding thank you for wisdom thank you for parents thank you for love thank you for kindness thank you for humility thank you for peace thank you for Prosperity say thank you in advance for what's already yours how I live my life that's why I am one of the reasons why I am today say thank you in advance for what is already yours true desire in the heart for anything good is God's proof to you sit beforehand to indicate that it's yours already I'll say it again true desire in the heart that itch that you have whatever it is you want to do that thing that you want to do to help others and to grow and to make money that desire that it's that's God's proof to you sit beforehand already to indicate that it's yours and anything you want good you can have so claim it work hard to get it when you get it reach back pull someone else up each one teach one don't just aspire to make a living aspire to make a
