Do Cut Resistant Gloves Actually Work?

in today's video we're testing out cut resistant gloves how much of a blade can they really hold up to [Music] [Applause] well guys today you may notice my my thumb is extra bandaged up and it directly relates to today's video as I was preparing the film this I sharpened this kitchen knife it's one we've used several times before and it wasn't in great condition so I was sharpening it up and then we happen to have some of these magic eraser type sponges around and as Callie demonstrated when we filmed that they are remarkably delightful to cut it's perhaps the most satisfying cutting service in the world and I I was holding one of the sponges and I sliced through it and it was beautiful and then I brought the knife back and I went to slice through it again and I missed and I hit my own thumb and I sliced pretty bad into the tip of my thumb so after a quick trip to the hospital yesterday they patched me up and this is excessively bandaged right now it's not that I need a brace on it the brace is just there because what I cut was the tip of my thumb and it's extra sensitive so now if I accidentally bump it on something it's not gonna there's no nail there to protect it I mean there is some nail that is not in there is not all of the nail there what happened is I cut at an angle starting about 2/3 of the way up my thumbnail and just took a little little piece off right there so so in the process of us getting ready video Carter he loves he cut his finger with the knife we were going to test because it wasn't quite what here's the basic idea we've got a couple pairs of gloves that are supposed to be highly resistant to cutting we've got a couple kinds of knives scissors and some more powerful tools and we're gonna see how well these gloves hold up so we know the knife is sharp now let's get onto the gloves now this video idea is brought to us by reddit user dark fluff fan they recommend it on the king of random subreddit that we try this out they had seen the video where we tested the indestructible shoes and they thought this was in a similar vein so we are we got a couple pairs of the gloves one pair for Cali one pair for me I think the plan is that we're gonna put our hands in the gloves and then just get a full 18 foot French guillotine and in we're not going to do that we're not gonna do much testing if any with the gloves on our hands because we don't want any more of this so yeah we're gonna be testing all of this with our hands out of the gloves but we do want to give them a little bit of dimension so we're not just cutting against the surface although I'll try that as well so we've got some turkey jerky turkey sausage sticks and we're gonna use these as stand-in fingers I do want to put some bamboo skewers in here to see if I'm right hit the bone my first thought when looking at these K don't do this guys is that they feel just like my gardening gloves actually this rubber material okay let's see what information that has an open laundry Guide that's all everyday protection from cuts punctures ooh cuts punctures and abrasions this is their puncture resistant - that'll be good to test also says they're smart phone touch screen compatible so that's nice abrasion level for cut level 5 puncture level 4 well that sounded like it cut right into it did you just cut the tip off your finger no love I'd yeah off your finger gloves not your fingers yeah no my fingers 5 my finger was it that far these scissors just sliced right through that huh done also it's been that way for about two minutes while you erase reading instructions I'm gonna take the pinky I'm gonna take this knife I'm gonna see what happens if I try and slice through it I'm gonna start pretty gentle and just work my way up pretty light slice I do see a little bit of a gap right there it's pretty small but it's something [Music] decent dish I think it got through the rubber I'm not sure if it got through the claw but it wasn't your hand now I'm gonna try and get through I got through when I was trying to get through I definitely did get through so I got through the front half and not the back half now I'm gonna see what happens if I change the angle oh it works much better at this angle you're going kind of against the grain looks like a material itself so that direction pushing just as hard as sliced neatly through here it did not get through so let's try it with I need a finger in my glove so now there is a sort of simulated finger in this glove I'm just cutting oh oh I slipped and it seems to work better with a finger in it because I maybe there's a little bit of give I'm not just grinding it against the table yeah but also nobody has ever if you're wearing these I'm gonna go ahead and give our gloves a bit of a break here you are never purposely putting your hand down as much as we're joking and then trying to saw into it I did cut it a little bit almost as hard as I could pushing and sliding I did manage to give it a small cut you're cutting another object in your hand slips onto your glove the idea isn't I cannot in any way soft through this that's not gonna happen and we can stop through steel with that but if you slip that's the whole point of this alright I think I've smooshed our turkey stick into bits but I don't think I dot through the glove really at all you can see the rubber on the surface I got through but it did not cut the glove open I'm curious if I can scissor through with a finger in so here goes that was one slice it did not stop me very much so when there's two blades in opposition to each other these aren't great scissors but they're fairly new it can definitely get through like that I'm gonna do a test I'm just gonna be the same slicing test but over here on the back of the hand so I can see if it's the cloth rather than the rubber that's doing the resisting okay yeah and you're talking about slicing in your hand like you're holding a bagel and you accidentally slice it's not an experience I have much I really don't cut bread that often but for me cooking in the kitchen I'll be chop chop chopping if I get my finger I'm gonna really upset about it I do wanna know if these will protect from that alright that was a lot of cutting in the same spot it does look quite uncomfortable but I think that's you know this is easy I can break through this with my fingernail turkey sticks or whatever these are aren't a great a panel of because your skin is not that thin it's not them just fall apart it's just giving us something to cut against so we have an idea but if that had been my finger and this one when I chop down yes okay it damaged the meat but just like Nate's yeah okay there's a small hole like a tiny tiny spot where I can push through now but that did just save me stitches alright so we were shopping at Walmart and all of the bagels they had when we were there were pre sliced everyone so we got just a kaiser roll we knew the same idea test and unfortunately my thumb does not fit into the glove right now but the part of my hand I'm going to be cutting toward will be well covered at the glove so the idea is that you have to slice your role or your bagel and you should probably be using a serrated knife for this but you're cutting down through and you're cutting it oh no you cut too far I'm not gonna say that these gloves can hold up to unlimited torment but in terms of cutting through bread and worrying about cutting your hand they'd they definitely work for that yeah there's nothing that Martin no marks nothing and that's so that's plenty of effort to get through even the most stubborn of rolls today carrots cooking in the kitchen depending on I mean some people can do the cool like ha ha ha I can't really do that real well ok I can but if I were to miss I would suck I also cut like this a lot that's my cure that if I already hit my sub in that I don't want to actually do this all my thumb's actually in it but that's the point if I were hearing came down you're that kind of trying to cut cuz I just did that like knock out but I'll show you both of those I'm not gonna have my actual thumb in there push that out it's two different ways this is one way I just don't but I know other people do I think I'm good and then the way that I would cut if I'm in the kitchen I still think it's good like it's not much there it's sort of got through the rubber now I've taken this glove and I filled it with turkey sticks and carrots or we're just gonna call that a hand and now we're just gonna see what happens if we go at it with the bench grinder see how that does I imagine it's gonna get pushed and moved around a lot hmm what do you think I don't know all these are made for in the first place I think you're right and this is designed for cutting through steel bars and so cut resistant gloves not immune to rotary bench grinders most things aren't very few things are immune to rotary bench grinders these gloves are one of the things that are not alright the gloves say that they are also resistant to stabbing so we're gonna try stabbing a little bit it's just on a cardboard box there's nothing in it I'm just gonna see you know this is how hard it is to stab into the cardboard and try and stab about that same amount see if I get anywhere well you wouldn't be happy about it it definitely broke the cardboard surface but it is stopping it it it's stopping it yeah I think your hand would be sore maybe a small bit of blood I'm gonna give it a little more effort but you don't have stitches well the cardboard failed but the glove did not my hand is probably quite a bit more durable than this cardboard you know try it with something a little more support boy I think it probably got through the glove Nate what about the workbench there's a small hole in it it's fine it's a workbench here's a table saw here's my thought we're going to fill another glove with sausage six you're gonna turn the table saw on and then we're gonna go like this I'm no longer what happens to it I don't think it's gonna be really great for the table saw where the glove or the stuff in the glove I'm no longer a participant of this video I am a witness I'm glad it didn't get seized and pulled down inside I think we can see where it hit there's turkey Turkey have you really slice slice slice Wow shred shred shred if you're making dinner absolutely these are awesome if you're chopping carrots if you're trying to slice bread if you're in the kitchen if you're I would say even small tasks around the house probably gonna be just fine hi yeah I bet you know if you're doing yard work chicken wire somebody's probably grate it stop it from stabbing into you're not gonna win any fights with a rotary tool nor should you try you should never be wearing gloves or have anything moves around you if you're dealing with one of these but definitely loss to the bench grinder and the table saw as expected these are not intended for
