he takes it very very seriously he was one of the best battlers that we probably see because he felt that he came from the heart one was kind of intimidated you know what i'm saying this is the mark we left see you know what i'm saying we come somewhere and we wreck it then we leave we took him to a couple of places in philly because they heard about the battles in baltimore we took him to a couple of plays in connecticut because they heard about the battles in baltimore it became a thing where everybody wanted to try to beat x you took that same wrongness to jay-z [Music] how many steps i gotta kick the proof of that even what kick my rip that catch your breath when jay-z battled dmx he wasn't the billionaire rapper married to beyonce he was the brooklyn rapper from marcy projects highly respected in the battle rap arena i never stopped coming brand new with the plan i'm the man better the slam keeping the upper hand rubbing so people knew if you battled jay-z and you won against jay-z that was a big notch on your belt jay-z was a battle rapper he came up with the king on the big daddy king so he knows exactly what it takes i was always aware of dmx but david's with me you know so you got to remember in those days it wasn't like we was like you know being seen through the internet we was going and physically walking up on blocks and saying yo this is that basically if dave dash was with jay-z they had a bet that jay-z would be dmx so we made a phone call to dmx and our team out in baltimore antonio we need x out here in the next couple hours jay-z was from brooklyn and dmx was from yonkers so we decided to do it on neutral grounds in the bronx so we did it over there 168 in webster in a pool hall was yelling screaming it was very heated it was a lot of tension in the room they battled on a pool table and so they put jay-z on the table hey yo i got my hand on your throat and my eye and your girl chasey the greatest back and i shook up the world i let the spot like a glow in the dark my job is done peace i'm back to the block when it was time for dmx to battle why you know stops everything and you know he's like he's gonna say something really prolific nobody tapes us because our ain't copyrighted i told him yo x lyrics we didn't we didn't publish this joints at that time so we're like yo y'all can't film and i remember the moment i'm like like yeah i don't tape that you know what i'm saying [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and wave was there all night when i was spinning it's like i had to beat my head ramen is rhyming that rap is bad but i'm seeing it as being just keeping you clapping and stabbing the tap in the heavens they would see top pick up the microphone on the shoulders on the throne what's wrong with you by the way [Music] in my head the whole place just fell out i mean you know it's incredible you know they're going to say they won't we going to say we won it was close granted it was close we gave it to them they gave it to us and they did learn that it was equal respect [Music] x was popping in the street but the locks started getting more mainstream we started getting our thing together and we had mary j blodge behind us you know mary and she was from yonkers mike's like yo who was these kids but i need puff their hair she took out music to puff i'm like puff you gotta hear these three dudes named the warlocks a little lab right here you know where i cut my deals and all that bad boy at the time was like we always refer to the chicago bulls of rap i'm just living out a dream you know what i'm saying young black man just living out of dreams that boy in 1996 was the label to be on big had already put out his first album craig mack you know flavoring your air remix so if you had to make a decision on any label at that time that you were going to come out on especially being from new york going to bad boy so three kids from yonkers getting a shot really really want this thing very very bad when you do listen to the tape how long from the time you put the tape in can you tell if this is something you're interested in 10 seconds mary blodger called us and told us like yo this man want to meet with y'all we was like no way and that's when we went there and we got into me and i think he was on the phone it's real nonchalant he told us to rap just rap he was still on the phone while he got us rapping but he was really listening i don't remember any of the rhymes but i remember the moment and i remember our energy and i i remember like yeah we killed it we got this in a bag it's on he said we i know y'all called the warlocks he said the war's over now you're the locks he said welcome to bad boy so the lobster started the puffy and we kept them as management the only problem was that x wasn't feeling it because he's like well why everybody else is on and i'm not on i was the first one here post reaction to dmx was that he was talented but it was too gritty see puff was more flamboyant flashy so that wouldn't have fit his roster he's like well your voice is too rough and you're not marker all right i say well the best for last x you'll get your turn dmx was getting frustrated and losing hope and doing other things other than focusing on his music and he had a little situation where some local drug dealer kid got robbed i got accused of a robbery i didn't do and because i had robbed so many people i was the likely candidate but this was different and accuse that robbery because the person who robbed him i ended up robbing them and i had the goods i had the guy's coat i couldn't make a up like one of them but really so i gave him the coat i was like yo why don't y'all come with me yeah i'll go with you who'da couldn't go with somebody if they actually did it you mean like i know i didn't do it and they jumped me [Music] we went to you know the county hospital like two days later earl's injuries were so severe i mean he was unrecognizable to be honest he didn't look himself the pus was feeling so fast joke i so could like on the head got so bad y'all they went in drained it out and realized joel was broken they told us if he would wait another day that he would have died [Music] dmx he stayed in the hospital like two or three weeks his mouth was wired shut daryl said i don't have anywhere to go i know we're not together but can i come stay with you me and earl we had broken up for a year because his drug habit had gotten so bad that i couldn't do it anymore at that time everybody was pretty much fed up with them so no one could take them in and i was like you can come stay with me when earl was recovering he would just write write write like a machine at that time irv used to come by and say earl i'm about to be at a r up in def jams and once i sign it's on and then boom irv gotti they man is the a r def jam best hip hop label ever invented def jam started out as a company in my dorm room we just got a label deal with cbs columbia records out of money for a whole lot of money from the inception of death champ we wanted to share a truth from a place that we were from so we crossed over from the edge in the hood to the edge in the alternative world and then we went like this at 88 def jam was the biggest hip-hop label they had a roster of really incredible hip-hop artists and it was hit after hit it was beastie boys it was run dmc it was public enemy and our job was to make records that were sonically explosive we had a disdain for the mainstream
