so this is the dresser it's got three drawers let me open the [Music] two shelves so we'll see planning on starting with the drawers we'll see where we get so I've taken off the doorknobs and I'm gonna paint on the stripping varnish and I'm just gonna start with this one and see what it does so this is 30 minutes so I know I just jumped right in with this video my mom ended up finding this dresser on Facebook Marketplace we'd been looking for one for our Nursery she found this solid wood one and I was very confident that I could refinish it and get the lighter wood look that I was going for so she brought it up to our house and I got to work I've never actually stripped a piece of wood furniture before that has a varnish and stain on it I've stripped paint which I think seems a lot easier than stripping stain because stain's more penetrative than paint but after a lot of research I found this Citrus varnish slash stain stripper and I can confirm obviously I'm making this video so I finished the project that it worked really well and I found that putting it on really thick worked best especially if you're not planning on wrapping it a lot of the blogs and videos that I've seen have people Saran wrapping different portions so that the stripper stays wet and can react for a longer period of time this really didn't need that long to react so I did not end up covering it but if you put it on thicker then it does stay moist a little bit longer so we're gonna leave that and see starting to Bubble up a little I just kind of messed with it there to see so I think it should be scraping off pretty easily once the stripper was done reacting it took around 30 minutes typically in each section that I did for it to like bubble up and start to separate from the wood I ended up using a paint scraper to get the majority of it off and then I also grabbed a steel wool brush and a toothbrush to wipe off a lot of the excess looks good I'm gonna let it dry and then I'll sand them so I guess I just started on the rest of it [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] this down using a electric sander and just some hand sanding with the 120 Grit [Music] [Music] so I've got everything stripped probably could have left some of it on longer but I was getting impatient let me show you the top yeah here's the top so I'm going to sand it down I think you can hear my husband mowing along and see where we get and then these are the drawers I've sanded those already [Music] so I'm gonna attempt to bleach this wood I have blades and a paintbrush and I'm going to test it on the back of this cabinet door we'll see how it looks I'm just going to brush it on in a pretty thin coat and we'll see what happens I'm just brushing it on pretty evenly I think I'm going to cover the whole back side just in case I like it or I hate it at least it'll be even coverage and then I'm going to let it sit out in the Sun for probably like 20 minutes I don't know how long it'll take I'll check back on it smell really clean though let that dry let me see what happens I ended up going ahead and bleaching everything I did three coats of bleach on each piece and let it dry for about 30 minutes in between and then one thing I realized was the importance of it being in the sun so I ended up having to rotate the dresser a couple of times just so that all the sides were getting enough sun to fully bleach the wood so for comparison this is our TV stand this is kind of the coloring that I'm hoping to achieve this is here's what the door looks like next to it it has bleach on it and I think it's pretty close but it still has like a little bit of yellow tint to it so I'm trying to decide if liming it is gonna work so I decided against liming it because I'm not trying to spend any more money and I found this a weathered Oak stain that I already had so I figured I could try and thin it out a little and see what it looked like you can see on the door right there I had already tested it out and it kind of gave it a cooler tone it took away a lot of the yellow so I just went for it and went ahead and put it on everything because why not foreign some of the stain in a pretty thin layer you can see that looks a little grayer but not too much I did a pretty light coat see like it's a little grayer here but it's kind of I just think it looks a lot better it's not as just yellow I'm going to go ahead and seal it so I got the dresser moved in I have this leftover it's like marbly looking I think you'll still see this but it'll be better than nothing because I don't think I'm gonna be able to actually I might be able to peel this up I don't know so we'll see I might just leave it as I can always line it later [Music] now I just have to reassemble everything [Music] foreign foreign [Music] so here's one final look at the dresser before I started and here's the finished look [Music] [Music] thank you guys again
