hey guys welcome back to another DIY Home Makeover video I'm excited to finally be sharing my DIY patio makeover on a budget I'll be extending my patio in this patio DIY and sharing patio decorating ideas for a modern farmhouse look I'll be repurposing furniture building some DIY patio furniture and DIY decor in this video to share tons of decorating ideas for when you're decorating on a budget this patio makeover is the fourth video in my DIY home project series and I love sharing affordable ways to make home updates on a budget be sure to LIKE this video and subscribe to my channel for more DIY makeovers and now let's start this patio makeover by clearing everything off of our current patio space [Music] once we had cleared everything away we wanted to start taking up all of these edging stones and then we were gonna start working on pulling up the pavers as well since we will be extending our patio in this video now I do have to admit I did a ton of research before we decided to do this project and all of the YouTube videos that I saw and the blog posts that I read made it seem like this was going to be pretty quick and simple for us to do especially considering we already had this relatively large patio space here to begin with but let me tell you guys it was not simple at all it ended up being a much larger project than we had initially anticipated and it took us weeks to finally get this done so I do want to make you aware that if you are looking at this video and thinking oh my gosh this looks so simple and easy and I can totally do this you can totally do it but just go into it with more realistic expectations than what I had and know that it will be a ton of work [Music] [Music] okay so we have about half of the papers up already and both tired so what we're gonna do like for the rest of today is Derek is gonna finish taking up all these papers cuz they're heavy and it's already like hurting my back to do it and I'm gonna work on getting these rocks out of this rock bed and then we're gonna work on these ones too we're going to take up all of the Red Rock like down to where the house ends because we're going to be extending the patio out this way so we're gonna do all of this and hopefully in the next frame it'll all be done with YouTube magic here is that YouTube magic and I wish it really did happen with the snap of my fingers but once we had all of those patio pavers pulled up I was just going to work on painting our back door here and I am going to be wiping it down really well first with a good hardwood cleaner and degreaser that way I can make sure that I have a smooth primed canvas before I start painting I'll also be taking off the doorknob and the lock here I know a ton of you had questions in my front porch makeover about what drill I was using so I will be sure to link that in my Amazon shop for you guys the link will be in my description box but I'm just going to be painting this with that same tricorn black that i used on my front door and my shutters this one gallon of paint has lasted me for so long I was able to paint my front door all six of my shutters this back door and later on I'm going to be painting some cinder blocks for some DIY patio furniture so at the $22 that I spent on this can of paint during my last project has lasted me for so long and I was definitely able to get my money's worth out of it [Music] reusing paint from other projects you have done is a great way to save money and do these DIY makeovers on a budget this is actually a tip that I got from my friend Ashley she has a youtube channel as well it's called till vacuum do us part and she also has a vlog channel with her husband it's called Ashley and chase vlogs I'll leave them both linked down in the description box below for you guys to go check out they recently did a back patio makeover on a budget and it was absolutely amazing so when you're done watching this video if you need some more patio makeover inspiration definitely go check that out as well [Music] these steps are pretty old and they were looking a little bit beaten down so to give them a nice inexpensive refresh I decided to sweep them off and then sand them a little bit with a piece of sandpaper so that I would have a smooth surface to restain them and I'm just going to be using a weathered oak semi-transparent stain here and I'm going to brush that liberally all over these steps I'm doing it liberally with a brush because they were really dried out and cracking in a lot of places so I wanted to make sure that I was going to thoroughly get all of the color everywhere and I was going to really be refreshing them as well as I possibly could and this is a great way like I said to make an inexpensive update this little can of stain was only maybe four or five dollars at my local Lowe's and it did all of the steps here with no problem and they looked pretty brand new by the time that I was done [Music] while I have been painting the door and staining the steps this is what Derrick has been doing so thankful for him I could have never done this by myself but you can see it here like our old patio ended right about here and so he has dug out all of the grass and I guess Assad is what they call it in this whole area all the way back to all the way back to here so he took out like all the rock beds here and it's gonna go right up to the house now and I'm getting so excited now I can't wait so we still have to like stamp the ground and level it but we're not going to have time to do that today and then this is just from I didn't show this on camera but before I could stain the steps after I had sanded them down I cleaned them off really well with a degreaser and then rinsed them off so that's why there's all this mud here but here's what the steps are looking like with just one coat of this stain and this stain I do have to wait I do have to wait eight hours minimum before I can put on any more so and then here is two coats of the tricorn black paint on the door and I love it at first I was going to paint the trim inside to to be that same black but you can probably see up at the top there that it desperately needs to be sanded first and I was just not in the mood to do that today so probably by the end it'll all be done but yeah so I think the paint is looking really good that's all dry now and I'm not going to have to do any more coat before we started working on putting down any of the new pavers we wanted to take some measures to prevent against weeds as much as we possibly could now of course there is absolutely nothing that you can do to completely get rid of them but we did get this a bottle of like weed seed stuff I don't even know exactly what it was but I just sprinkled it all over the ground and it only cost us a few dollars and it's done a great job so far and then we also got these flower bed liners this black fabric here and we laid this down as well now I was really unsure about this but Derrick was insistent he wanted to do as much as we possibly could to prevent against weeds that were sprouting up through the cracks of our previous patio however in hindsight do not do this it was such a waste of money and it made our job so much harder than it needed to be it was really difficult to level the ground with all of this flower bed fabric everywhere so like I said do not do this just spray down some weed pellets and then just get out there every day and pull any weeds that are sprouting up and as long as you stay on top of it it will never become unmanageable [Music] [Applause] I did consider not even including these clips in the video but ultimately I decided to go ahead and share them with you just so that you can see that I am human too just like you are and I make mistakes constantly all of the time with these DIY projects and makeovers nothing is perfect the first time that you do it so I just wanted to give you this opportunity to learn from my mistakes but also to be able to relate and know that if something seems impossible for you to do it is not impossible it is okay to have hiccups along the way and we will overcome them but now that we have all of that fabric put down here the next step was to pour the leveling sand and get the ground leveled so Derek has put all of these bags of sand all over the place and I'm just cutting the tops off of them and pouring the sand out so that we can start raking it to get the ground level [Music] [Applause] [Music] again hindsight is twenty-twenty we could have saved a ton of money here by buying a scoop of sand from a local sand and gravel place instead of buying all of these individual bags from Lowe's but you can learn from my mistake if you're going to do this definitely buy a scoop I was going to show you guys how Derrick was leveling the ground but it was just very tedious and time-consuming work so instead I decided that I would move on to show you what I was doing while he was leveling all of that sand and then putting down the pavers so here I am staining some two by fours for my DIY patio furniture I'm going to be using these two by fours and cinder blocks to make two benches and an outdoor bar I was really excited about this project and it came out beautifully at the end you guys are absolutely gonna love it it really added to the modern farmhouse look that I was going for and it was totally budget friendly [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in case you guys were wondering the color that I am using here is gray and it is a semi-transparent outdoor stain now I only ended up using one coat because I really loved the way that it looked and by using only one coat I was able to save a ton of money because I only needed this tiny little container to get all of the wood stained and that little container was only $3.00 a 98 cents now if you are interested in knowing like the full details about all of the materials that I used how much it cost and how I was able to save money I will be doing a back patio tour over an Instagram story's the same as I did for my bedroom makeover and the front porch makeover and I will be going into detail about all of that for you guys so definitely make sure that you are following me over on Instagram and looking out for those stories if you are interested in those money-saving tips and knowing the total cost of this entire project I did want to mention that while I did not film it I had sanded all of these two by fours prior to me staining them I just didn't want anything to become too redundant or boring for you guys there are a lot of small steps in between these projects and if I had included everything this video probably would have been an hour and a half long I also didn't include when we stamped the ground before putting down the flower bed liners and the bling sand in the back patio we used a hand Stamper to do it to save some money and that took forever to get done it was like an entire day of just doing that and again it would have been really boring for you to watch so if you are planning on doing any of these projects yourself please do some research and make sure that you know all of the steps that you need to take to get them done because I have not shown everything here in this video [Music] this is one coat of the stain on the boards and I like it a lot I think I'm just gonna leave it with the one coat actually it still looks super natural but just like a little bit darker than the regular lumber the color is grays and I just really like it so it does say to wait 24 hours before judging the integrity of the color so I'm gonna do that and see how it looks after that 24 hours but like I said as of now I think I'm going to leave it this way I think it'll be a nice contrast to the cinder box because I am gonna be painting them that same tricorn black so which I think you guys will see in the next clips but yeah I'm really happy with it so like I said I am painting the cinderblocks black and to save money I'm using that same can of tricorn black that I bought for the front porch makeover which saved me a ton of money on this project I didn't have any additional expense for painting the back door or for painting these cinder blocks however this process would have gone so much faster had I used spray paint instead of painting on with this exterior paint but it did end up looking really great I was happy with the way that it turned out it was worth it to save some money and totally worth it for the look that I achieved at the end [Music] aside from reusing paint that I already had I was able to save a ton of money on the benches and bar by using two by fours instead of the usual four by fours that you see with a lot of cinderblock furniture and I was able to save money by price matching and asking for discounts at Lowe's when I was buying all the material so in total I only spent about thirty-six dollars I believe it was on both benches and creating the bar area and you really cannot beat that again if you want to see all the details of how I was able to do it so affordably make sure you're watching out for those Instagram stories my Instagram handle is at loving life as Megan and it is linked in the description box for you guys now you're seeing me paint this entire cinder block here I did this for all of them but it was taking a long time to paint so I only filmed completing this one but just know that I did completely paint every single cinder block these chairs are the last thing that I am going to paint on camera for you guys but I just could not exclude this footage I thought these were so cool and that you guys were going to love seeing me transform them so I do have these chairs linked in my Amazon storefront which again is linked in the description box for you guys in case you are interested in picking up one or two I got these for my daughters I do have two girls one is six and one is two and I thought that they would be perfect for them in the bench seating area however I think they do hold up to like a hundred and sixty or a hundred and eighty pounds so adults could totally relax in these chairs as well but I'm just going to be taking them apart because I wanted to spray paint the wooden part of them now again my friend Ashley is totally responsible for making me fall in love with spray paint I swear you guys she does so many DIYs over on both of her YouTube channels using spray paint to completely transform decor and furniture and just all types of things over there and she totally inspires me to go grab a can and do another project every time I see her doing one so I will link her YouTube channels for you guys to go check out all of those DIYs and you can be inspired too but just prepare yourself because she is going to have you spray-painting everything in your life [Music] for anyone who is wondering this paint is an exterior spray-paint and it is in the color deep gray with a matte finish and I like to use a cool tone neutral color palette and a matte finish whenever I can just because I feel like it really adds to that modern farmhouse look that I really love having at my home while I was doing all this painting and staining Derrick was using YouTube magic to get our patio pavers down and that meant that it was finally time to start decorating and the first thing that we're going to be doing is unboxing our new outdoor mini refrigerator now this mini fridge was totally my inspiration for wanting to create an outdoor bar area and we did get it from the brand new air this model is a 24 inch built in 160 can outdoor beverage fridge and weather proof stainless steel and you guys it is absolutely stunning I am so excited and happy with our selection and I know that this is going to be perfect for the summertime when we've got the kids playing outside playing in the sprinkler having barbecues friends and family over this is going to be great for having beverages outside and also storing any kind of barbecue food items so that we don't have to constantly be going in and out of the house [Music] we turn the fridge on its side in order to be able to turn the knobs here and level it on the ground and unfortunately since we did that I could not fill it up here on camera for you guys because the instruction said if you turn it on your side you have to wait 24 hours to fill it and start using it however I did film that to be included in an upcoming cleaning video so if you want to see me pack out this fridge definitely make sure that you are subscribed with your notification bell turned on so that you don't miss that upload and if you are wanting one of these new air outdoor refrigerators for yourself I did reach out to the brand and they agreed to give a discount to my subscribers so you can click the link in my description box to take you to the new air web site browse any of their products and save $100 off of your new air order when you click that link in my description box and use code loving life as Megan at checkout but now as you can see we are just building the bar area around it we're building up the cinder blocks and making sure that everything is level and exactly the distance that we were needing before we would go ahead and lay the top over the bar and start working on the decor here [Music] to secure the bar and the benches that you'll see us put together later we did use a concrete adhesive and we use that in between each individual cinderblock as well as using it to secure the wooden boards on top of the cinder blocks however I just did not film it because it would have been you looking at us doing the exact same thing all over again we wanted to have everything laid out first so that we knew exactly where it needed to be in order for it to be level and secure and we didn't want to have to worry about putting adhesive on and having it in the wrong place and then having to fix that kind of mistake but once we had everything where it needed to be I was going to start working on the decor I have these 8 by 10 picture frames that I picked up from the Dollar Tree for one dollar each and then I also had these three pack prints of tropical leaves that I got from the target dollar spot during the spring or summer reset and so we're just going to be opening up each of these picture frames and putting one print in each of them for a total of eight that I'm going to secure to the siding above the bar area without door command strips [Music] this actually ended up being a terrible idea and another hiccup or mistake that I made but again I wanted to include the footage for you guys just so that you could see that not everything always works out as planned and I did waste eight dollars on these photo frames here they secured to the sighting no problem with those command strips but I wasn't thinking about the fact that our patio is uncovered and so any kind of rain or anything was easily going to get into these cheap photo frames and completely ruin them as well as ruining the prints and so that would mean that I would have to take them inside every time that there was bad weather and that was just not practical so I did end up taking them down and I'm still working on a different idea or solution because I absolutely love the prints and I still want to use them out here for the bar top I already had this galvanized serving set that I'm just going to repurpose and reuse out here this summer and I had this utensil caddy that I already had as well and I just spray-painted it to match the color scheme and I'm filling it with some black plastic utensils and some decorative napkins and plates that I got from the Dollar Tree just to go with the theme and for entertainment purposes and then with the serving trays I am going to be filling them with some practical and functional but also decorative items that way it will look nice and pretty if but it will also function really well for what we need I am going to be including things like straws hand sanitizer bug spray sunscreen toothpicks all types of things that we might need for entertaining or just for spending some time outside and I'm going to be arranging it on the tiered tray that way it's really easy to bring it all inside when there's bad weather and then bring it back outside no problem when we are ready to use it I can just leave this tray set up all of the time and not have to worry about all of these items always bringing them in and taking them out [Music] what you see me doing here is a super inexpensive DIY for decor this was actually a jalapeno jar and I also did one earlier that used to be a pasta jar and I just spray painted their lids and added some twinkle lights inside the twinkle lights were less than five dollars per strand and I just think that they are going to be perfect not only as filler items in the tiered tray but also for sweet lighting and just a little bit of ambiance out here when we are entertaining and enjoying this patio during the summer [Music] and I was done with the bar area we wanted to start setting up our dining area now we are reusing our patio furniture a table and chair set that we got on clearance last season but I did want to add an outdoor rug so I picked up that cream-colored one off of Facebook marketplace for only ten dollars and was hoping to be able to layer it but it just didn't work for what we were wanting to do so instead we'll just be using this palm leaf print rug that I got from Walmart it was only $44 which is a steal it is an outdoor rug and it is just so beautiful you guys my friend Carla from the channel Carla McKenzie is actually who told me about it she is the queen of Walmart finds and Walmart deals and I'm so appreciative that she shared this with me because I think it is absolutely beautiful it is the perfect pop of color and it still goes with the modern farmhouse vibe that I was looking to achieve [Music] over in this corner is where we are going to set up my DIY benches and we're going to work on them the same way that we did on the bar area I made one bench that was going to be six feet long and one bench that was going to be four feet long and that was perfect for using the two by fours instead of four by fours however if you are wanting to use two by fours to save money and create them the same way that I did and you are doing a bench that is longer than six feet you're definitely going to want to use extra cinder blocks in the middle to secure it or you're going to want to use four by fours instead to make sure that it's nice and sturdy [Music] [Music] over on this side is where we are putting these little chairs for the girls and I thought that this was going to be perfect to complete this little space over here it is such a nice little area for our fire pit where we can roast marshmallows make s'mores and just have a good time hanging out here all summer and fall I'm so excited to really use this space and make a ton of memories here as a family and with our friends and just really enjoy what we have created [Music] I am just going to finish up here by arranging some potted plants all around this patio space these are both beautiful and functional I did get a lot of citronella and plants that would kind of keep bugs and mosquitoes away but that finished up and now it's time for the final reveal so let me just show you some before shots to remind you how simple and how much of an undecorated disaster this space was before we started working on it and now here is the after you guys and as you can see it is a total transformation I am 100% in love with it and so proud of what I was able to create here I am really so happy with how this space turned out and I'm so grateful that I was able to bring my vision to life on such a strict budget there are a couple more things like creating some outdoor lighting and some outdoor decor that I really wanted to do but we just weren't able to this time around because of our budget but that is totally ok it's normal to not be able to get it all done at one time and that just means that there will be a ton more makeovers and DIYs for you guys to look forward to in the future thank you all so much for hanging out with me today I hope that you were able to get a ton of inspiration and ideas for making over your own outdoor spaces don't forget to give this video a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel if you aren't already and definitely make sure that you check out Ashley's channel and subscribe to her as well and I will see you guys in the next one
