hi I'm Justin and this week's project I'm going to be working on a Mercury ed this is something that I saw on YouTube already it was made by the guy that runs DIY creators can't remember his first name right now but he is awesome I loved his videos and I've wanted to replicate something I've done I saw this Murphy that video it had to be like a year ago now and I wanted to build one ever since my friend gave me their double size bed and I have a guest room that means a nice bed in it and so I thought I would give it a try it is a complicated build and he didn't include specific plans so watching the video a few couple hundred times I linked them closed I measured it from my mattress he is the 12 inch on the roll of the ten inch mattress I'm going to be getting as close as I can get in trying to fit it exactly to my room but I basically I drew up on a quick sketch I'll show you here and it pretty much shows you what I'm planning but it's going to be a piece by piece build cut some bill for three month want to put it in my room is a little bit smaller it's a 12 foot by Attlee 10 foot room so it might be a tight fit but always long emergency but I think that they are so cool and so I'm going to give it a shot I know this is giving me a complicated build hopefully I enjoy about it so well let's give it a shot hope you enjoy so as you can see I already has the long plywood pieces cut down the size I have the people at Home Depot do those cuts because I don't have a big table saw to do that myself and it's just easier that way so here I'm cutting the pieces down to the right dimensions for the box that is going to hold the bed [Music] now the majority of this build is put together by pocket holes so that you don't see a lot of external screws there's a great tool I love using it and it does make a really strong joint [Music] the piece I'm installing here is to rest the plywood on that's going to be the backboard for the bed this is what you're going to see from the outside with the bed is all folded up [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] replacing pocket holds in the support struts so that lays flush and I could really get the screw in there tight [Applause] [Music] so this is the part I was most nervous about during this build it was installing the bow swivels to give the Murphy bed that Murphy that action to be the hinges for the bed coming up and down you just have to get them in the same spot for both sides so I measured multiple times and lined it up on each side so that I got the exact same positioning and the middle of the sheet but the night stands I did have to make them smaller because I didn't have the room in my build because the box had to fit the double size mattress perfectly so the only place to make space was to make the nightstand a bit smaller so I only made them about 8 inches wide each they were still substantial enough is just a guest bed so people are going to be staying there a whole long time but they serve their purpose I did have a ton of fun making it I think building the drawers is probably my favorite part after the main structural components were put together I did want to test fit everything to make sure that it worked so I put the swivel on and I attach them to the nightstands I had both nightstands made and one of the structural walls so I put them all together and just kind of did a test fit to make sure that everything worked properly [Music] [Music] and the bookshelf was pretty easy it was just pretty much building a big rectangular box the main purpose here was to fit on top of the nightstand and to provide additional support for that top plate I kind of held the Murphy bed together I really liked how this one came out the shelves look really good I used the same pocket shelves that Glenn used in his build video and turned out looking really nice I picked up a corner clamp to use on this build and I'm glad I did it was a really useful tool I definitely recommend getting one it's able to hold the 90 degrees while you're screwing things in it really helps if you're building filling by yourself [Music] after the bookshelf was built I wanted to make sure that it fit just right and the bed still had clearance [Music] I cut out a spot in the bottom that was each piece so that the bottom of the drawer can fit nice and tight like I said earlier building the drawers for the nightstand was calling my favorite part just because it was the first like functional piece of furniture that I've actually ever built so building a drawer and having it flat out was really satisfying for some reason I really enjoyed I went once it all came together [Music] I wanted the drawers to be nice and strong so I used wood glue and just held them together with some Brad nails [Music] installing the drawer slides is pretty easy I just followed the instructions that came with them it was pretty simple until I had to install the slides in the nightstands themselves I got a little complicated when I couldn't fit my drill inside I just was able to use a hand screwdriver and I went in just fine [Music] here I'm putting the other the bookcase shelves I put two pieces of wood together cut with a little dado slot on this side once those were together I was able to slide them right on to these cleats that I had installed in the bookshelf it was a really nice way of installing shelves it's plenty strong enough a lot easier than doing a bunch more pocket screws that's for sure I then installed some trim just to make it look nice and so you couldn't see the edges of the plywood I you select pine for the trim around the whole Murphy bed itself the first time I've used it is actually really nice to work with very clean and it gave a really professional-looking at this point I was starting to get really excited because it was starting to look like a complete unit [Music] so if you member with with Tina's before like myself they are used in stuff like snowboard bindings where you need a really flush surface on one end where you can't have a nut showing through this was perfect to use with the Murphy bed because they gave it a nice secure connection for the swivels to go into the nightstand and to the side panel without having nuts going through and making it so that the drawers couldn't open as you can see I'm putting together the Shelf or the leg for the Murphy bed this is really nice I was a little upset because I missed the cut and it was an expensive ten dollar piece of wood so what do they say measure twice cut once do that and you'll save yourself a little bit of money I was initially worried about the strength of this shelf but after putting it up it is very strong it holds nice and tight to the bottom of Murphy bed and provides plenty of support for bed this is the fun part of actually installing the Murphy bed in its final position this is my office or guest room when my friends come over to visit previously they use an air mattress that can be a little bit more excited to be able to sleep in an actual bed when they come to visit [Music] we've had so much trouble installing nuts into the swivel once it was in its final position luckily I had my brothers help we were able to get it all together but it took us forever and it was quite a bit of a pain but once I was in there it was nice and secure and we hopefully will never have to do that again haha I doubled up the left side of bed to give that structural piece a bit more rigidity so it is two pieces of recording two-ply [Music] as you can see when sawing that top plate the murky bed is not completely vertical it's not completely straight up so I was able to fix this by adding a support plate in the back that you'll be able to see and then I also attached two anchors to the wall on top pushed over into the right spot so that it stayed where I wanted it to these anchors provide support so that deep that doesn't come falling down these are just little L brackets that I made out of some scrap wood and screwed right into this stud so I at this point with the bed being up in the right position I want to make sure that I got the fakie support pins in so I'm clamping it where I worked on it luckily I have a little brother that connect shove in there and have him drill the holes from the inside since I couldn't reach the position to probably happen I only lock them in there for a couple hours [Music] [Music] Wow this 2x4 that I'm stalling is going to be hidden away later by a faceplate but it just offers a little bit more structural support the floating shelf is held on by pocket screws and I put a top plate on to hide all the screws and make it a functional shelf it worked great [Music] now I'm starting to install the final trim this is what makes it look really nice and really professional after I got all the miter cuts just right I was able to cut each piece to fit perfectly and cover up those ugly plywood deciding all of these cuts are done one at a time just to get a custom fit and so that everything fit perfectly it was really hard to measure so I kind of just went back and forth piece of wood marking where I needed to make the cuts on the miter saw and then I went through and connected everything with the brad nailer I did really give it a professional looking finish and I really enjoy it now I'm putting together the face plates for the drawers I did the same way blended in his video just making some trim for the boards and then nailing it right on it gave it a really good professional look it just did take a bit of time and to get all the pocket screws into the little tiny pieces of wood it worked really well just make sure you have a bunch of clamps on hand [Music] [Music] I'll come into the main stretch we are installing the hardware for the drawers this part was really exciting because that meant everything is coming together and it's made it look like a piece of furniture that you go buy from a store I was really proud of the way it turned out I am putting in the headboard there I forgot to film this part of the build video Glen from do I creators did a great job covering that in his video and so you can I'll link that in the description below so you'll be able to see how that was done there but it's the final product I hope you enjoy [Music] you [Music]
