hey guys welcome to my channel i have a really exciting project for you today i'm going to be showing you how to make a murphy bed without the expensive hardware now you can get the hardware if you'd like but it ranges from between three to five hundred dollars which was just a little too pricey for me for the projects i'm working on so i did a little bit of research and found a more cost-effective way of doing it so i'm going to show you how and i hope you follow along today i'll be showing you how to make a queen size murphy bed you'll want to start with the base which is where the mattress will sit make sure you do all your measurements you'll have two sheets of plywood underneath and a box frame around to hold the mattress i had all of my pieces cross cut at home depot and here i'm just cutting them to length on my miter saw once you have everything cut to length it's time to join the pieces together i personally love using the kreg pocket hole jig it just makes everything easy to put together and it also hides the holes for the screws once that's done we just want to sand everything down to make sure that it has a nice smooth clean finish here i'm just using a 220 grit sandpaper [Music] now we can take everything inside and get ready to assemble it all together [Music] using the pocket holes that we previously drilled we will now be attaching the four pieces together using pocket hole screws once we have those four pieces attached we'll quickly move it out of the way and lay down the sheets of plywood once we have that down we'll put those pieces back on top and then screw them into the bottom piece of plywood [Music] now for the supports i cut one inch strips of plywood and i'm screwing them down to make sure that everything is held together securely [Music] now that we have that done just time to test if the mattress fits and for me it did i was so happy that it actually fit perfectly now it's time for the trickiest part of this build that's installing the mechanism that will lift the bed base up into the cabinet what you want to make sure to do is to measure multiple times in order to install the mechanism in the same location on both sides of that bed base this will be very important to make sure that everything is level when the base is lifted up into the [Music] cabinet [Music] i found it helpful to use a scrap piece of wood as a guide this helped me to make sure that the mechanism was installed in exactly the same location on both sides of the bed base once you have this spot just mark out where the holes should go and then drill some pilot holes [Music] you'll want to figure out your measurements and mark out and put some pilot holes into the cabinet as well [Music] now it's time to build the cabinet where the bed base will pull up into this will be similar to the process that we did earlier we'll just be cutting our pieces to length and then using the pocket hole jig again to make some pocket holes and then attach the pieces [Music] so [Music] [Music] um [Music] one thing to remember is that when joining these pieces together use glue and screws this just makes the joint extremely strong and very hard to break [Music] apart [Music] the piece i'm working on here is the top part of the cabinet you want to make sure to put the pocket holes facing upwards so that when the cabinet is up against the wall the pocket holes will not be visible [Music] [Music] hmm [Music] here i'm just adding some edge banding to cover up the exposed plywood and give a nice clean finished look now time for some decor so this piece that i'm working on now is the front side of the base this is what's going to be visible when the bed is lifted up into the cabinet i had a vision in mind of what i wanted to look like and i used some plywood cut to four inch strips and attached them accordingly to get that design aesthetic [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] me all right we're almost there but now i'm going to be building some floating shelves that will be attached to the bed base and will double as legs this is what the bed will sit on when it's folded out [Music] [Music] um [Music] so [Music] so now for some finishing touches time to prime and paint now if you have a paint sprayer that would be the better option i wasn't able to use mine in this small room so i had to use a hand roller [Music] now to re-add the mechanism i used some t-nuts to strengthen the support and make sure that everything was just nice and strong that is optional if you want to use it or not but i just thought it would be a good idea once you have the mechanism attached to the bed base you're going to push it into the cabinet and then start attaching it to the cabinet now this part can be really tricky and time consuming but i used some pliers to help hold the bolts in place and just kept working with it until i got everything tightly secured to save a little money i just got these door pulls from my local variety shop and attached them to the inside of the bed base i'll be using some bungee cords in order to hold the mattress down when the bed is in the upright position [Music] you also want to secure the bed to the wall screwing these pieces into the wall studs to secure the bed in the upright position make sure you have it level and then just drill a hole through the cabinet into the bed base i've just been using a 3 inch screw or bolt in this hole to make sure that the bed base stays in place [Music] and that's it here's how it turned out [Music] [Music] me [Music] if you like this project please
