hey everyone John Deere here from John Deere's embroidery legacy now I've been doing this my entire life and it is what I do for a living but I do get asked special embroidery favors once in a while now if you don't know what I mean by an embroidery favors when a friend or family member asks you to do something for them so if you've ever had that happen please comment yes below now if you do that you want to make sure you do it because you love the person and I have a very special reason for doing this next project now the reason why is because my daughter Beth and her husband Travis they are officially married but they are having a destination wedding in Costa Rica and as part of the party favors for all of the guests they want to do drawstring bags that everybody can use at the beach so it's kind of practical but it's kind of fun and of course they want something embroidered on that bag so being dad and I love them so much I'm gonna come up with something using ESA fonts and I'm gonna probably digitize a little something extra special on there for them as well [Music] now the kids have given me instructions as to what they want on the bag they wanted to say Costa Rica and then I'm gonna put 2019 underneath and then I'm gonna have hashtag happily ever Ballmer now the first thing I want to do is choose a font and I can see actually if I take this font let's just made lil bit wider so I can see it on screen I'm going to get rid of the grid right now and actually what I'm going to do right off the bat is I'm just going to click right on my zero point here and right on my zero point here and that will give me a positioning marker for Center Center on this design and that's going to come in handy as I start to do multiple lines of text now the first I'm going to do is I'm going to take this so I'm just going to zoom in a little bit and I'm going to actually start to adjust these fonts I can see this as a regular font actually it's turning all of the corners and we have regular fonts on our welcome embroidery font site we have elements which are designs that have been assigned a keystroke we have 3d we have appliques but we also have something called flexi fills and flexi shapes and I'm going to choose the exact same font but instead of doing a font that turns I'm gonna actually do one that goes a single direction so you can see this no longer turns around the angle it actually goes in one direction almost like a fill would and I'm gonna choose this type of font for this because I'm gonna make sure that this is probably going to be a little over eight inches it might be eight-and-a-half inches or so on this canvas drawstring bag and it'll actually be a nice focal point so I'm just going to adjust all the kerning so it's pretty much close this point even though this is kind of a script I don't want these to overlap in any way I'm going to keep them kind of separated as far as the lettering is concerned it's one of those thoughts that can actually be done both ways that Falls kind of in between a regular font and an actual script where you might want to overlap something like this and I could do that if I wanted to but I think I'm going to leave a little bit of space and you'll see why in just a minute so let's just get that closest point now I'm gonna go back to my one-to-one scale I'm going to grab that higher object and this is where I can actually use that you know line that I put down where I can see where the zero point is I mean make sure that this is Center centered and if I go to us instead of metric and I grab that again I can see them at five point two five nine inches let's just take this up to eight as a roundabout number and now I've adjusted that as well now I have this as one object so if I look at this Costa Rica is one object let's go to my objects right now instead of colors and I can now break this apart and now you can see when I broke it apart the first time it shows Costa and Rica it's broken it up into two objects now if I grab just the Costa highlight it and let's break it apart and then I'm going to grab this again and see if it can break apart anymore and it broke apart one more time and if I highlight it again you're gonna see that it's grayed out it won't break apart anymore now I broke this apart as many times as I could and the reason why is when I do that now I can take that object and its entirety I can see that all of those are highlighted and I'm gonna change that from a satin stitch to it to Tommy stitch at the click of a button let's go out of here and go back to metric because I want to see this in metric and I'm going to grab those again grab all of them and all of them I don't want to grab the Rica but I grabbed all the cos da and I'm going to change that now to 0.8 millimeters I'm going to make it less density and I'm going to tell it to travel on the edge and I'm going to tell it to have absolutely no underlay so now what I really have if i zoom into this is a very loose fill that actually travels along the edge of the object so be nice and clean now because I've done that I'm going to grab that object and I'm going to duplicate it and when i duplicate it i'm going to tell it to become a different color and if i look here it's a different color and i'm going to turn it into outlines and i'm going to turn it into a back stitch and now you can see that I've created a perfect backstitch outline around just that one object now this is why I broke it apart into two separate pieces because I can now take this color move right underneath in the sequence and now I know it's going to do the fill-in side of Costa it's going to do the outline the registration is going to be correct and now I can go to arica and I can break that one apart and I'm just going to grab that those four objects again break it apart one more time and now I know that it's broken apart as many times as it'll go but I'll check it I can see that it's grayed out and now I can do the same thing change it to a fill I'm going to change it to 0.8 millimeters and I'm going to travel on edge so I travel on edge now I'm going to take away all the underlay and now while it's still highlight it I'm going to duplicate it as well so I'll duplicate and then I'll change the color to the turquoise I'll tell it to become an outline and I'll tell it to become a back stitch which has three patterns that are offset at a slight angle because they're really nice finished effect for something this size so there I have both of my words done they're separated now I can come in let's go back to my lettering I have the same font chosen so I'm going to go 2019 I can just grab that make it as big as I want I do not want to have the regular font I want to make sure I do the same thing let's choose that flexi fill and then I'm going to hit the H key I'm going to adjust the kerning on these so I'll just make it nice and close so it's going to kind of touch closest point on all of these objects and then I can actually say you know what I think I want that a little bit bigger so let's grab that entire object make it a little bit bigger so it's a real focal point within the design and then I'm going to take that and I'm going to move it down again using my lines to make sure that I'm set at the zero point right on the vertical line there and I know that it's absolutely perfect and I'll just let go now that it's highlighted I'm gonna break it apart broke it apart one time let's go back again grab all four of those objects and I'm gonna break it apart again and now I know it's not going to break apart anymore but just to be sure I can see that it's grayed out and now it allow me to go in and change that to a fill stitch we're gonna repeat the exact same thing point eight travel on edge we're going to have no underlay whatsoever and then I'm going to take that I'm going to duplicate it I'm going to change the color I'm going to change it to an outline and I'm going to change it to a back stitch and that looks pretty cool so I now have three objects costarica 2019 loose fill we have a back stitch outline around everything and I'm ready for my hashtag so I'm going to click off of here and now I'll go back to my lettering and I'm going to do a hashtag and I'm going to actually choose a different font for this and I'm going to choose what called balentine's and I'm just going down on my B's and I like this one it's a nice script font and it will lend itself really well to what we're doing so here's the balantine script I choose that I'm going to now go to my hashtag I'm going to just do it all in lowercase happily ever and then Baumer and there I can see the letterings come out perfectly let's actually make this a little bit bigger and let's move it down underneath and again I can Center it to the design you know what let's make it bigger even and the only thing I want to do afterwards is come in here and make sure that the kerning looks good and I also want to make sure that the spacing looks pretty equal as well so actually that looks pretty good right there I'm going to hit the H key I'm just going to zoom in a little bit so I hit the B is my hotkey for zoom box and now I'm just gonna start to shift these over ever so slightly actually those two look okay so I'll move those two over at the same time make sure that they actually join closest point those peas are a little too close even though it does have a letter spacing which will kind of globally change the letter spacing especially when I'm doing things like this I do want to make sure that I will Kern the letters properly because with scripts you have some letters that might you know be perfect and some that need to overlap a little bit so here this one I would just want to make sure is close enough to the Y so it joins closest point for this one here I want to make sure that it overlaps into the tail of the e again make sure it's close this point and especially when you see an R the R's you have to be very careful because you want those to line up perfectly so it looks like one continuous line so it doesn't take too long but this just will enable that I have nice clean lettering as I move forward so I'll grab all of those and then I can grab all three at once move them so that their closest point and then I'll just go over to the last two letters I can see that this one has to be over just a tad if I want to be perfect and I'm going to make sure that I overlap that one now I can grab that entire thing let's hit the one and I'm going to grab that and make sure that it is centered perfectly and then I'm done so right now I'm done all my lettering this looks great and all I have to do is add a little bit of custom detail in there I'm going to digitize a design especially for my son-in-law and we'll be ready to go now we're going to customize this design a little bit and I'm going to manually digitize a design now my son-in-law loves sea turtles so I'm going to just grab a quick image of a very simple sea turtle I'll resize it to a size that I think looks good I'm just going to digitize this and then I'm going to duplicate it and then mirror it and put one on the other side after I'm done but once I have it in place I'm just going to lock that into place so I know it's not going to move while I'm digitizing and I'm going to zoom in to my six to one scale now if you're not familiar with why you digitize that six to one you really need to take some of our look into taking some of our theory based education because it is the foundational rule that actually helps you to become a faster more productive digitizer so I'm going to just use a single run and that's really a traveling stitch and then I'm going to go back over top of the stitch that I just created and there I have a back stitch and then I'm going to go to digitize block so I'm going to choose a satin stitch and here I'm just going to over stitch a little bit from the artwork you very rarely if ever get artwork that was perfectly made for embroidery so I always find that I am always going back and over stitching a little bit and then I can just create a satin stitch right there go back to my digitized open shapes I'm going to travel down to here and then I'm going to do a little bit of detail right here and I know that I'm in backstitch right now so I'll have to select that quickly turn it into a run stitch and then I'll back stitch actually on my return path so I'm going to basically follow exactly the points that I just did and I'm gonna go back to my digitize open shape and I'll just go right over top and find my way back to where I started which is right over here hit enter now I'm going to go back to my digitized blocks I'm gonna go back to my fill and I'm going to digitize the next shape and I'll start right here and I'll just put in curves for this point right here I'll put in a straight right here and then go back to curves and ease into my corners as I'm going over stitching ever so slightly on my way back and make sure that I put in my last point right there hit enter now I'm going to go back to my digitized open shapes I need to have a run stitch and I'm just going to run straight down here and again let's do this little bit of detail I don't have to follow the artwork exactly but I want to be kind of close and then I'll do a back stitch and I'll go right over top of my traveling stitch that went in the inside and there I have gotten it back to where I started now I'm going to go back to my satin stitch and let's just do this piece right here and I'm going to do some curves and that's this back space here's a curve curve and then I'll go to a straight and then I'll go to curves and I'll continue to curve all the way around this until I get to there and then I'm going to go back to a running stitch and I can travel then from here all the way to this point and let's digitize the tail so I'm just going to again choose a satin stitch and I will come in here and put a straight straight straight straight and then I could probably go to a curve a mask of a little bit of a curve as it goes forward hit the enter now I have that part done let's go back to digitize single run and I'll just do this little object right here and again simplify it a little bit as I'm moving forward do the back stitch follow back on the same path that I just came down and we'll finish right there then I'll go back to digitize walks and I'm going to do a curve over stitching a little bit from the artwork this one I'll make a straight then continue around as a curve and I'll just continue as a curve all the way till I get to here and then I'm going to go back to a digitized open shape I have one more little bit of detail that I need to do right in here so I'll just go back over and again not following exactly make sure that I have that as a single run and then I'm going to digitize a back stitch coming back so that it travels over top right to here hit enter and then go back to the size block satin stitch and here I'll do some curves curve curve and then this one can be a straight and then I can continue to curve around easy into my angle as I go my point counterpoint always dictates my inclination points or the angles in which I'm going now at this point here I can just digitize because it is going to join closest shape I can come right here and start to do this object and I can curve all the way around I'm over stitching a little bit from there oops that when I don't want and let's just go all the way to here nice thick lines it's going to look nice and bold when it's done and I can just take this one let's say right over to here and then I'm going to stop now I'll continue up to the top of this object here and I'm just going to very very quickly do a point and then a curve and I'll curve my way around to this object here and because it's going to join closest point right down to this point right here and I generate that as an object then I can have this last piece as one continuous object all the way around and that will give me a nice smooth look within the design it's not going to look choppy it's going to look nice and clean so I'll just continue to go around here do curves all the way around until I get to the point where I started and let's just go back here and let's just make sure this overlaps and looks nice and clean as it finishes I can see that everything is being covered as I move forward and and I'm almost back to where I started and I'll just end right here on that point and let's hit enter so there I have all of the objects done now that that's done I'm going to go to my artwork and I'm going to unlock the artwork so I'm going to unlock all let's get rid of that object right there then I can come down and let's go back to colors and I can see that I have that as a single color so I'm just going to right click on it and I'm going to duplicate it and now I'm going to mirror it so I'm going to mirror it this way and then I can just grab this and I can move that entire object over to the other side and basically make it look centered and justified to the entire design so if I look at this design now it actually has some custom elements to it I think it looks great I think the kids are gonna love it I'm gonna sew this out and I'll show you the finished results well I finished running the design on the machine and I've got to tell you I'm really impressed with the results the es fonts just work spectacularly you can see that all of the outlines around the lettering are perfect they line up great and it's actually a very smooth running design and the registration is correct now it's because I broke it apart into multiple sections because this is approximately a nine inch wide design so you can see that results are incredible with esa fonts now if you own hatch and if you've never tried es a fonts go to our we'll calm embroidery fonts site and you can download a free font at the link below and if you've never tried esa fonts at all you want to make sure that you download our 30-day trial and give it a
