ain't no backyard Boyer's nick here today we're going to be making another rebar knife this one's a little different from the last one I've gotten a lot of requests people wanted to see a hand-forged knife that was just really rough forged and then finished up on the grinder so I have a couple of different knives in mine and today I want to do a quick one I've been kind of out of practice for the last couple of months so I'm probably going to make a few of these just to bring my skills back up what we're doing today is we're going to start with a piece of half-inch rebar so I've already tested this rebar and the carbon content is pretty low on this one so just keep in mind that with rebar carbon content can be all over the place you're more likely to find a lower carbon piece than a higher carbon piece but generally they will harden to an extent so that's what I'm using today this is going to be more of a practice piece but it'll also make a nice butter knife or steak knife or a feasting knife of some sort so without further ado let's power up the forge and get started I like to start foraging once the skills come up to this orange color now maybe showing up this yellow on the screen but to me into my eyes and showing up orange eminences for some of the skill locks [Music] starting in about three inches I'm just going to flatten this out just to about an eighth of an inch that looks pretty good I'm gonna strike in here a little bit just to move the handle back so now I'm forming a tip by going from the back and forcing the price down so now that the points pretty much where I want it I'm just going to clean it up a little and then move everything over now I'm just going to finish for finding the shape a little bit so now I'm going to cut the handle off about four inches and we're going to turn it around and forge out the back end now I'm going to heat this up count it out now I'm going to draw it to handle just a little bit now just take everything nice and straight so I'm going to let this cool down and then we can get the grinding so now that it's cool I'm just going to grind it to shape just going to refine this point a little bit clean up the spine a little bit a little work on the handle especially near the end and then we can get the heat treating so now I'm going to be setting up my bevel just doing real rough on this and just going to grind off all of this get it to a nice thinness buck-toothed baking clucky all right so now that I've got it rough ground on both sides you can use this flap wheel to put my finish on it so I'm just going to grind everything smooth clean up everything and just kind of clean the surface on the handle [Music] there's the boulevard stubborn scratch right here so I'm just going to go to an angle take it out there we go another that's gone I'm going to blend it out you they go once I finish I'm going to go to the other side oh it's ready for heat treat so now that the blade is finished up I'm going to use some fireplace cement to create a hormone on this blade so you can apply starting from the back so I'm going to copy good on the other side and one thing I like to do is just really quick take off most of the clay on the back this will help prevent some this will help prevent edge cracking now that the play is drive time to do my heat treat so what I'm doing first because I'm heating up this piece of rebar I'm going to throw that in my quench tank so that it will warm up the water of them I'm using water de pointes this because it's a fairly low carbon play teaching the dice I'm just going to place it into the porch and I'm going to try and keep the whole thing up as evenly as possible once it gets to the point where it no longer sticks to a magnet I'm going to bring it just a little bit further and then punch it in water all right here it is so you can see there's a nice clean line here now normally what I would do is I would refinish this in an etch it what I've been doing the last few times I've done this is rather than itching it I just wire brush everything smooth and the finishes have been really cool so far well so we'll see what happens here [Music] all right so here it is pretty much all done now I'm just going to put an edge on you can see the pattern is kind of neat found that if I just wire brush it you get all this interesting stuff going on it's not as clean as edging it but I really like to look so now I'm going to sharpen this but the first thing I need to do is remove the very edge but you have to actually grind through this outermost layer and you'll see it as the sparks change they'll go from very light to getting more intense and the intense sparks means that this deal has hardened to an extent so here we go you can see light on the spark the see those parts just for reference is it five hardly any except for when you get into the housing portion so you can actually see the hide this different [Music] so here it is I hope you enjoyed building this knife along with me today and if you have any suggestions for other things you'd like to see me build please let me know in the comments below if you liked this video be sure to check out my channel for other videos like this and I've also got some links in the description to some of the books I've written I've even written a book on how to make knives so be sure to check those out as always thanks for watching and I'll see you guys next time [Applause] Oh
