in late 2016 just a few weeks after the presidential elections in the united states a man working at the u.s embassy in havana cuba began hearing strange intrusive noises outside of his home the man who many now referred to as patient zero described the sound as quote annoying to the point where you had to go in the house and close up all the windows and doors and turn up the tv he discussed the disturbance with his neighbor who also worked at the u.s embassy and the neighbor confirmed that he too had heard the noises which in his words were mechanical sounding on its own this incident may not seem like much however it was just the beginning of a much greater mystery the events that followed forced individuals to start speculating which in turn sparked numerous theories and the hunt for the truth behind these mysterious noises a few months after the initial incident in havana a third diplomat from the u.s embassy began complaining of hearing loss after he encountered a bizarre noise it wasn't long before more employees experienced the same thing and they exhibited a range of symptoms from memory loss to confusion and headaches in total more than 20 workers had to be evacuated for testing and to undergo treatment these events seemed to be framed almost immediately by the media and high-ranking officials of the u.s as an attack or an act of war that had deliberately targeted the united states workers using some kind of acoustic weapon but could this possibly be true well the united states and cuba have not had the most friendly relationship in the past and the cold war is still very memorable to older generations so history could provide a motive albeit an outdated one as for the technology to produce such a weapon the us military have been developing sound weapons for years now so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to assume that an old rival is working on similar technology for all the political and scientific debates that's around this mysterious case though the evidence seems to point in one specific direction the real cause is most likely a phenomenon that has popped up at various points throughout human history but let's not get ahead of ourselves from the start the us government seemed adamant that the sickness had been caused by a deliberate attack even before they actually knew the source of the noise the state department's medical director charles rosenfarb described the patterns of injuries as quote most likely related to trauma from a non-natural source this of course alluded to some kind of secret weapon rather than the usual causes of overseas illness however holes soon started to appear in this hidden weapon theory for instance an ear nose and throat specialist from cuba who would analyze the evidence was skeptical to say the least and deduced that to harm someone from outside of a room a sonic weapon would have to emit a sound above 130 decibels and that such a blast would be equivalent to four jet engines on the street outside a house as a result it would deafen everyone nearby not just the intended target shortly after that a video supposedly taken by one of the affected us diplomats was uploaded to youtube a high-pitched streak can clearly be heard although the origin of the sound was quickly determined to be that of crickets specifically the jamaican field cricket known for its intrusive sound this revelation was a major blow for conspiracy theorists though it still left many unanswered questions although the crickets in question could at times be fairly loud they were never noisy enough to cause deafness by january the following year many us government experts had ruled out a sonic attack the fbi had even conducted their own tests and concluded that physical symptoms experienced by diplomats were not caused by sound regardless many american officials were still convinced that something more was at play and as a result american staff numbers in the cuban capital were cut by 60 percent and the post was declared a standard tour of duty a classification usually reserved for the most dangerous embassy positions as for cubans themselves officials from the country were stunned by the wild accusations and responded with a mixture of shock and sarcasm well here we are caught in between what has been what will be and what is happening it makes one wonder leo i'm on the phone oh sorry it's fine hello yes this is i yes i have what about it leo they're talking about skillshare the online learning community it's talking about how drawing and writing classes can be a great way to help manage stress it said all of that right apparently the first 1000 disrupt members get too much free good deal okay goodbye now what in the flying fudge biscuit was that not sure could just be the wind what were you saying oh i was saying sometimes it feels like we are in a [Music] commercial cuba's ambassador to the united states jose ramon cambonias tweeted it is evident that to attack cuba some people don't need any evidence next stop ufos if the illnesses experienced at the u.s embassy in havana were the result of a targeted attack it would be quite unusual that the victims experienced a wide range of symptoms that some workers were targeted not just at the embassy and at their home and that the illness started off with just a couple victims and spread from there the weapon would certainly be something currently unheard of as well to be capable of producing these effects a more realistic explanation for the events that happened and something that has taken place numerous times throughout human history is that of conversion disorder more commonly known as mass hysteria described as quote the rapid spread of illness signs and symptoms among members of a cohesive social group for which there is no corresponding origin unsurprisingly it was scientists in cuba that were among the first to embrace the notion of mass hysteria in this case the director of the cuban neuroscience center mitchell valdez sosa told the washington post if your government comes and tells you you're under attack we have to rapidly get you out of there and some start feeling sick there's a possibility of psychological contagion the way in which the illness spread is certainly representative of a way in which mass hysteria spreads and even some us experts were quoted early on as saying it could certainly be psychogenic yet the us senate department despite declaring that no one cause has been ruled out followed up by stating that the findings suggest that this was not an episode of mass hysteria as is often the case government information was hard to come by at first but when medical findings were eventually released they were panned and mocked by many scientists and experts for example sergio de lasalla the chief editor of cortex noted how there was many false positives in the studies of the embassy patients and that if the scientists had tested any group of normal or healthy people for signs of tinnitus in the same manner they likely would have found similar results due to government secrecy and conflicting medical reports information about the affected workers remains vague however there is certainly enough to suggest that there was some sort of psychological factor at play and very little to confirm that cuba or anyone else possesses a sonic ray gun of any kind at the end of the day it seems that even if this kind of technology did exist the human mind could arguably be even stronger what is it [Music] time is running out [Music] so [Music] you
