hall and disney's broadway hits the excitement backstage is just incredible i am john barrowman and i'm thank you i'm totally thrilled to be here tonight and be your mc for tonight's celebration of songs from over two decades of disney on broadway the west end and around the world it's my pleasure to introduce the rest of our cast miss scarlett strand miss merle dandridge mr josh strickland miss ashley brown mr alton fitzgerald white we are all part of the disney family having performed in disney musical shows on broadway and on the west end also please welcome the disney broadway hits choir featuring students from the arts educational schools of london and the royal academy of music our piano and our orchestrator arranger and music supervisor mr jim abbott how can you miss the rest on sage the bbc concert orchestra is led tonight by maestro keith lockhart well we began tonight's concert with songs from disney's very first full-scale stage production beauty and the beast and given that it's a story of a young woman who yearns for more than her provincial life it's fitting that bell made her theatrical debut in one of the world's biggest metropolises new york city where the musical played for over 13 years and became one of the longest running shows in broadway history now during that time the show played in over 20 global productions including a two and a half year run in london's west end now about the same time beauty and the beast premiered on broadway a new disney animated feature was roaring into movie theaters and ultimately would become the king of broadway [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] see [Music] the leaves [Music] this [Music] was [Music] so i must go [Music] may let this [Music] i have no choice take this [Music] is [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] beloved british nanny captured the hearts of children and parents across the globe long time fans included walt disney who coaxed the reluctant author into letting him fashion from her stories a live action and animated movie which premiered in 1964 and became an instant classic forty years later the stage musical mary poppins marking the first collaboration of sir cameron mcintosh with disney theatrical became a smash hit here in london with miss scarlett stralin carrying the carpet bag [Music] however on the other side of the pond in 2006 the show began six years of success on broadway where the first to take in hand that famous umbrella was miss ashley brown scarlett you're up first [Applause] by the time the wind has flown the weathering around i'll show you if i can no matter what the circumstance for one thing i'm renowned my character is i'm practically perfect in every way practically perfect so people say each trait is great and patently sound i'm practically perfect from head [Music] well there's my credentials perhaps you have a few questions not temperamental never grouchy or gruff the very thought will you stay tender when the growing gets rough quite the contrary do you read stories without a big fuss or have objections to playing with us oh i like games but i choose them somehow [Music] you're practically perfect in every way [Music] i'm practically something as plain as a park becomes a wonderland all you have to do is why it's a jolly holiday with mary mary makes your art so larry when the day is gray and ordinary mary makes the sun shine through lengthy lexicons to find the perfect word a little spontaneity keeps conversation keen you need to find a way to say precisely what you mean supercalifragilisticexpialidocious even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious if you say it loud enough you'll always saw precocious supercalifragilist [Music] [Music] they might have used it once or twice i'm sure egyptian pharaohs would have grasped it did not chip then every single pyramid would bear this hieroglyph oh supercalifragilisticexpialidocious not animals seem so ferocious [Music] there's no need for dismay just of the greatest performers in the world have been here and you think about royal albert hall and you think about sinatra and you think about the beatles and you think about i mean it's crazy the people that have played and all the great classical singers that have been there and opera singers that have been there when you stand on the stage as you know you just kind of take it all in because it's so huge but also the history of that building the people who performed there and also who built it and why it was built the building was built you know to show somebody's love for their for their husband it was a memorial to you know obviously prince albert and i think it's just such a it's a moment that every performer wants to have happen in their career you know i think it's carnegie hall royal albert hall sydney opera house i mean this is one of the big ones in the world yeah hi i'm thrown in so as you come up at 360. look upstairs look around alton you're okay with this dude i am very okay with this unbelievable oh this is so fun away from las vegas wow i mean this is this is incredible i thought i had seen big but this is awesome wow i can't believe it wow yeah don't you deserve a little more don't i deserve a building that's all i'm just saying and some of the boxes are owned by families so it's not actually all the whole ticketing thing is crazy correct because there's some boxes will be empty they're like owned forever owned forever i own them forever he's like i have those two honey sweetie isn't it nice it's awesome it's amazing isn't it i mean faster yay wonderful i am so humbled and honored to be on the stage with these incredible performers these incredible musicians and it's incredible choir and uh i have been so thrilled to be working with disney both in films and theatrical on broadway and west end and all over the world and um you know when we did aladdin when aladdin came to the stage um one of the greatest things was being able to salvage a song that was lost it was a song that howard ashman and i had written for the original animated movie and as often happens in disney films the mother got lost that was a joke oh well but she did they always get lost you know so um and this song was called proud of your boar [Applause] proud of your boy i'll make you proud of your boy believe me bad as i've been my urine for a pleasant surprise i've wasted time i've wasted me so say i'm slow for my age a late bloomer okay i agree that i've been one rotten kid some sun some pride and some joy but i'll get over these laughs and up messing up screwing up times you'll see my now comes the better part someone's gonna make good cross his stupid heart make good and finally make you proud of your boy [Music] tell me that i've been a louse and a loafer you won't get a fight here no ma'am say i'm a goldbrick a goof-off no good but that couldn't be all that i am water flows under the bridge let it pass let it go there's no good
