hello youtube my name is joe i am a diesel mechanic i've been in this trade for roughly 15 years now today i'm going to do a toolbox tour on both of my boxes well i have one cart and one box um just gonna show you the tools uh that you need to get if you are gonna consider this field and uh maybe tools that you should not get based on prices and uh how good these tools last and i mean you can get some tools on amazon for cheaper than what you can on the tool truck it's a it's a number game and uh me personally i go off of uh references i watch lots of videos or read lots of uh just anything i can read on tools tool reviews um what tool was better for the job and uh over the years i've acquired quite a number of tools and uh i'm gonna go ahead and start this uh tour so i have a maco 4s toolbox i decided to get the hutch work lights i did have some cool work lights i've lost them this light uh it's a cheapie and a it's a good buy this light from snap-on not a goodbye these actually fall off they're magnetized this is a streamlight extremely good buy but you're going to pay for it again i don't use all professional grade tools this is a pittsburgh tool harbor freight and that's just a multi-use transfer pump i've only used it once so far these i got these off of tool trucks this is good to have this is a coolant tester and then i have a def tester this came off a snap-on this came off a mac these magnetic trays from uh matco pretty good buy these actually collapse and come back pocket mirrors are always good to have for certain vehicles you're going to work on in small magnets ratchet wise i use a lot of different size ratchets as you can see it's mostly 3 8 for me i have some half inch drives and a different size 3 8 flex head non flex and of course my quarter inch ratchets we move into our socket drawer up top me personally i keep all my metric sockets on this side i have a 6.12 point shallow deep uh here's six points again the socket brand i use well i guess the sockets that i do have is a mixture um like this is a let's see if it'll focus this is a silver eagle this is a matco kind of lower lower cost socket they're pretty good sockets i haven't had any problems with them i also carry uh craftsman sockets because you can beat the hell out of these things they're not real expensive and they're not going to break the bank for my heavy sockets i use a brand called expert i buy these all for the mac truck and again those are similar to the silver eagle brand sockets uh it's cheaper brand socket but they they do do the work that's required of them these are engine rotating tools no two or nox sensor socket that's a must if you're gonna work in diesel um variety of extensions i got half inch three eighths and a quarter inch drive those are actually right there these are brake chamber sockets these are handy to have i mean you can do it with a three-quarter inch ratcheting wrench but uh you want to do it fast you can hook this up to your impact put your cage bolt in which this is a cage bolt and a cage that breakout do what you got to do extractor this is a bolt extractor it goes to a couple different sizes it has pros and cons on it uh the pros is it's gonna grab whatever stud that you need to get out i've used a lot on exhaust manifolds and uh when i work with dpf things uh over here uh slack adjuster tools i got these off a matco tool truck you can get these on amazon for fairly cheap i just got them off the truck because they were available then this is a tool i just acquired it's just a valve cap stem remover and uh you can take your plugs out this is for going on dual wheels on tractors uh so you can't reach your hand in there all the time it's a tool that i use quite frequently i can't never have enough pocket screwdrivers i collect these we get them for free every year from tool trucks a lot of tool trucks hand them out or you can just ask your dealer most the time they'll just give you one for free unless i guess they're hurting for money then they might make you pay a couple dollars uh yeah these are this is socket collection as a diesel mechanic i use primarily 3 8 and half inch drive sockets this is a good set again these are expert this is my standard this is my metric all on this side i try to keep it organized i'm still missing a bunch of sockets from previous jobs and again these are you're going to need a lot a lot of sockets if you're going to work on semis i am not a fleet mechanic i work on all different makes and models of semis and that's why i have all the different tools i have socket wise these are pretty good i've only used these a couple times on certain trucks these are swivel head 3 8 drive i got metric and standard down there i'm not one of those guys that's going to pick up like every single tool i have in my box and show you you get the ideal wrench wise i went with the gear wrenches i do have some maco ratcheting wrenches in metric and again i put all my metric and standard i separated them i just acquired this tool this is good for uh cummins air compressors the older cummins that has that nut that you cannot get and this is the only kind of wrench that you can get back there again these are stubby mac co wrenches and here's more of my gear wrenches i go up to an inch and a half in this drawer on my metric side i go up to 32 millimeter and then for bigger jobs i have my jumbo wrenches right here and i go all the way up to two inches these are harbor freight wrenches a lot of people's gonna probably talk trash on harbor freight but you get a wrench this size you're probably not gonna break it uh those are primarily used for hydraulic fittings some some trucks have a wet lines on them and you have to take those fittings off and you're gonna need a big wrench and big pry bars and big ratchets um over here this set's a very good set this is a blue point set this is a lifesaver uh the reason i bought this said i used to work at a volvo dealership and uh this 19 millimeter right here takes off bumpers for volvos uh when i went onto the truck to buy this socket uh i can't remember the exact price i think is around sixty dollars just for one socket uh he did have a deal on this whole set and i paid roughly 140 for this set but uh have not had any problems with this set and it has basically everything you're gonna need um another good thing is uh torque wrenches my half inch drive click type torque wrench i got from snap-on just recently took a crap from me so now i have the electric one this will do angles and foot-pounds inch pounds goes up to 300 foot pounds so torquing heads will be no problem with this another little set i like to use because i do a lot of road calls is this this is just a general socket set you have metric and standard your deep weld are going to be 12 point shallow is going to be six point the ratchet's not too bad it's made by blue point comes with two extensions again down here i have more star bits these are from mac tools um these things actually grab a little bit better than my blue point one set it goes up to t60 starts off at a t8 uh the only problem i had with this set is uh did not have the long ones like like these sometimes you need these longer ones i know working on volvos i primarily use a t25 when i'm going into the cab of the truck to get into anywhere from a brake ecu or any wiring in that cab and that whole dash mostly comes apart with this t25 and this long one's actually a great tool um coming down let's see actually just got these these precision torque by mac uh i primarily use standard size wrenches i guess it matters what kind of truck you work on when i was at volvo we use metric of course tap and die set and matco catalog down here i have a re-threading set that's a good set to have because you're gonna run into cases where you need to re-thread a thread pitch and it has the thread files in here also another good set i have is a stud puller set by mac i got the metric and standard and that goes up to a 7 what is that 7 16 down to a quarter inch and that's for my standard and my metrics gonna go to uh let's say go to 12 millimeter and starts at a six millimeter let me try to get the camera in on there another specialty tool i have is by matcost a leak tester and this will test for blown head gaskets on a gas or diesel engines uh how you use this is you put your test fluid in the chamber here put this onto the radiator of the truck you have somebody start the truck you pump it a couple times the fluid will turn colors when that head is uh blown so that's a tool i use i actually use that tool when i go buy used vehicles i go on test drives i never tell them i'm a mechanic um moving down to my in my main box uh chisel and punch set i got this from mac uh haven't had any problems with it um i have a wide variety of punches chisels you're going to need these when i first started off in this trade i went the cheap route and grabbed a pittsburgh brand which uh i'm not downgrading harbor freight at all but uh some of their tools are good some are not good uh chisel wise on punch wise from harbor freight uh not a good buy they kind of shattered first time i used them which was kind of scary um down here is my brass punch set that's from snap-on obviously um seal remover wheel seal i can get into a lot of different wheel seals with this i've actually had to replace this tool once so far this part of it actually broke at a wheel seal that was just ungodly tight pick set um this is a harbor freight pick set this is a good set to buy it's only a dollar too i've used these a lot i got a longer set from a snap-on and then just filter wrenches this is for davco fuel filters this is a race punch set pretty good set to have from snap-on actually got the brass set there in this and a cast iron pot all in the same deal so tool trucks are going to try to throw deals at you try to move their product i can't get that to snap i call these drift pins these are actually harbor freight brand i've used these for about six years now never had any problems it's a solid piece of steel so you can't really go wrong i know people's probably gonna say buy uh name brand ones but why would i do that when these cheap ones here do the job just as this same as the expensive brand ones i'm moving down we get into kind of miscellaneous junk drawer uh air truck this is a great buy by matco i've used these tips multiple times on different jobs say if i'm putting an airbag in on a tractor i can put this tip on i can take that air line off that airbag inflate it lift the rear end of the tractor up take my airbag off and lower it back down on that airbag as needed extractor set i have just cheap ones airline removal tools you will need these these are pretty cheap to get and they are a lifesaver these right here just drill bits dewalt drill bits this is actually a good stethoscope to have you can listen for engine knock or diesel chatter inside engines i imagine you can use it on gas engines to listen if you have cylinders out spark plugs not firing moving down we'll go to feeler gauges great set to buy these have basically every feeler gauge you're going to need to run overheads or anytime you need a feeler gauge i primarily use them on overheads these are good to have the matco scrapers they actually have a striker on the back lifetime warranty you're gonna pay a little bit but hey you need a tool you need a tool excuse me allergies are getting me this tool this is a lifesaver these are for your clips that uh i forget what those clips are called there's a i hate them i used to use pliers on them i use this now and i never cut myself or hurt myself anyway um again more chisels punches down here this is from mac i haven't even used this set yet i've had that for about a year now um down here is my uh snap ring pliers and then i have uh just cleaning brushes uh this is actually a good set by matco and uh i use this to remove driveline bolts drive shaft these uh i have metric and standard on this this is a flex matco will replace those once those break i use them a lot a lot put those onto your half inch drive impact and away you go down here is similar to my half inch drive torque wrench i had this for about three years from snap-on uh again this does inch pounds and foot-pounds you're gonna pay for it but uh for a torque wrench you're going to want to pay some money for because you don't want a cheap piece of crap that's not going to do the job or it's going to over torque something break something this is my plier drawer again i got a deal on pliers these actually came from mac i have a couple snap-on ones in here you can tell the difference here like this is a snap-on pliers and then here's the mac pliers uh this one i prefer over this one but they both do the same job put those back in this is a harbor freight buy right here this big pair of channel locks and of course this big adjustable wrench by pittsburgh now you're probably going to ask why i have an adjustable wrench that size i found by working in this industry uh by the old timers that uh these actually work good for a you get blown tired and that driver gets a bent mud flat bracket you can bend this thing out with this i've met many of them out with this is my second one my first one i lost again just more tools a six-piece file set this is a good set to have i bought this cornwell truck down here my locking pliers i'm not going to say vice grips because those are blue point vice grip is actually a brand i do have one pair of my scripts right here pretty good buy you know the difference on these these hose clamp pliers by mac code these are good good to buy uh you're doing any job with a coolant or fuel line you can clamp that line off with those those have a one year warranty on them but uh they weren't too expensive they did not break the bank go over here to my power drawer i'm a milwaukee nut i have the 3 8 high torque half inch drive high torque these i were not happy with these impacts uh kind of the same model as ingersoll and ran uh this is matco's version i paid a lot for these and uh the impacts were not that good uh milwaukee drill pretty good drill to have a definite definitely need one of those you don't know how many times i've had to solve all things this is my electric and screwdriver drawer these are another good buy to get these are from macco these are pry bar screwdrivers i know a lot of people will just use regular screwdrivers as pry bars try to warranty this and the dealer suspects you use as a pry bar he will not warranty this this on the other hand is made for prying has a striking end at the end i use these a lot a digital multimeter should have got a fluke the snap-on does the job i've had this for about three years now and then just test light you don't really need to go real expensive with the test light if you know what you're doing um yeah and then these leads this is a good buy from mac co these aren't very expensive this is a one year warranty and then down here these crimpers good good buy again like i said some tools you can go cheap some some tools you don't want to go cheap this is a tool from snap-on made for stripping stripping wires i found sometimes you can't get your hand in with these but uh these will pull straight out and you can just grab that wire and pull and then snap on screwdrivers uh i would say my opinion these are probably the second best screwdrivers you can get at the time i bought these i thought they were the best screwdrivers you could get but uh i actually got to use some macos screwdrivers and the grip was a lot better and the heads of them were made a lot better but these do the job and i'm not going to trade these in when they're still working okay done this drawer has pry bars hammers air tools t-wrenches these are harbor freight these are good for doing valve adjustments or overheads on different trucks and then my hammer collection different air tools uh air hammers by blue point uh got these from snap-on good deal just i just watched for the flyers i don't go out and buy things right away but uh yeah that's my toolbox tour and if you guys have any questions i would love to answer them or i could answer the best i can um i guess that's it for this video there's gonna be more videos coming up in the future when i do get questions i can show you things that i've learned tricks i've learned uh maybe i can learn some new tricks from other people on here but that's it
