is Prince William trying to make himself more relatable is Prince Harry more lost now than when he left the UK and what is it like to actually sleep in Buckingham Palace we have a fascinating show coming up for you covering all the big Royal talking points hello and welcome to palan confidential I'm Joe Elvin and this week my panel includes the daily mail's Royal editor Rebecca English the papers editor at large Richard K and an extra special guest this week in the form of Elsa Anderson who was press secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip no less from 2001 to 2013 she'll be giving us her unique view on the royal family during some extraordinary moments and thank you for joining us we've got lots of interesting things to discuss this week but before we get into it just want to remind you to like And subscribe to this program if you don't already we're not far off 300,000 subscribers now and we would love to get us there please help us so if you don't already friends family and anyone you might think will enjoy it this really does make a difference to us now Rebecca we had a major Revelation at Buckingham Palace this week yeah and I know every week I keep on telling you how hard I work but actually had a really fun morning on um on Tuesday the truth comes out so I was invited to a really exclusive preview of buck palace's summer opening it's when they they throw open the doors to the state Apartments to let members of the public come in and have a look and see what all the fusses about um and this year there's something very special um unfortunately it's sold out already but they are opening the eastwing which is really the kind of the heart of the kind of the hub for the family so you get to walk down the the really famous Corridor in the East wing and then you get out to to go into the um the Central Center room and actually see what they see when they stand there and go to look out on the balcony and watch all the people coming down the mall I mean the Antiques um the decorations you know it's it's fascinating but for really the key moment is is is going into that room where they where they stand by the balcony and seeing that moment it's fantastic how did you feel when you were standing there well what's great is they've got they've got all these really kind of glamorous um and Priceless antiques but they've got this kind of Old Neck curtains hanging on the windows for security reasons so it's quite kind of a Through the Keyhole moment and what's really surprising is the balcony itself which I think when you look at the pictures and see it from the ground upwards look massive is actually really very narrow and the ballustrade is really low and the kind of mom and me kind of had a heart stopping moment when I think of you know people like little prince Lou standing there and you think God no wonder they're holding his hand so tightly because there's a few trip hazards on that b balcony gosh well Richard when Charles became king we were told that we could expect the Palaces to be opened up more so what do you make of this latest move I think he's doing exactly as he promised I mean he's opened up Bal maral Castle which is something he wanted to do and I think this is a start of a process I imagine that in time we'll see visitors being invited into bck and Palace beyond the 8 or 10 weeks of the summer people kind of forget now but the reason why Bucky and Palace was opened up to the public back in 1993 was actually a money raising exercise to pay for the refurbishment of Windsor Castle but it became an instant hit a huge success became instantly one of the most popular tourist attractions in the entire country and and sort of needs M and they've kept it up ever since well Elsa welcome to the show first of all thank you very much for having me hopefully not the last time uh you know Buckingham Palace very well um is this opening up more significant than Maybe people realize I think it's extraordinary um and a wonderful experience for people to have so my office as you look at bucking and Palace my office was on the on the right hand side so I used to sort of walk across the uh the graveled uh area to go into the palace and uh you know I've been fortunate enough to stay the night at Buckingham Palace as well significantly on the eve of of Prince William and Katherine Middleton's wedding oh my goodness and the atmosphere Joe was incredible tell us what it's like staying there is it all the mod cons or is it more net curtains and I would say the latter to be honest but I was very fortunate to have a very lovely room the night of the night before their wedding and just feeling the atmosphere soaking up the atmosphere and hearing the crowd all night basically chanting it was just it was electrifying I can imagine you didn't actually get any sleep no yeah but it was worth it it was you know it it was a a seat on on on History really wow well speaking of Prince William Rebecca we've had more developments on his homelessness project absolutely I was at a briefing earlier on this week about uh homewoods which is the big program that he's introduced to eradicate homelessness in six key areas of the country within 5 years which is an ambitious project but a year in and they've really already started to deliver there's a more than a hundred homes that have been um found for people to stop people falling through the net in the first place there's a million pounds worth of starter packs from Homebase they've had I think 800 people uh in on uh meetings to try and um get together kind of private building private landlords local authorities Charities to really bring those people who are doing good work in each of their areas together so this is a really big passion project for him and he's given a speech today I think he's delivering it probably as we're recording it in which he says he's really confident that this um this big project of his will succeed he's really got the bit between the teeth hasn't he Richard now obviously the causes of homelessness are many varied complicated something that successive governments can't even really fix cynic might say choose something more winable they might I mean I think it speaks to us a lot about uh what makes uh what you know Williams all about it is an incredibly ambitious project but when you've got um some in the region of 300,000 homes being promised by the new labor government to be built every year over the next five years um that gives you an idea of just what a huge scale this problem is the one issue which of course is never raised when we talk about homelessness and Williams project is how homeless uh numbers are driven up by immigration and that is a real problem for for not just for the Royals but for the country it's an interesting one we will watch this space and probably talk about William speech next week I would have thought but uh Elsa we did we have also seen William watching the football in Germany apparently there was a football match on last night sorry not very patriotic of me shouting loud when England scored and then we've had the pictures of him all hugging and smiles with Taylor Swift and shaking his tush at that as well um what do you make of this more unreserved Royal that we've been seeing in him I think it makes him incredibly relatable you know he's doing all the sort of the dad stuff and enjoying life as you know you and I would and I just think that all the images that we've seen especially at this Taylor Swift concert and the selfie that he's had with Taylor and and the two children I just think it's it just you know it just makes him relatable and normal but is it him naturally or is is this some concerted reinvention of the image I think it's him naturally I think it is I yeah I the footage that wasn't taken by you the media it was by you a member going to the concert um you showed him spontaneously enjoying himself so I don't think this is deliberate I think this is him as a downto earth you know modern Dad it's very very difficult to stay still when Shake It Off is play very difficult indeed I think even to go to that concert Joe I did go to and I was mentioned it I was there that night and I tried so hard to get a glimpse of William from my seat in the nose bed section it wasn't to be at least you got a ticket Jo like me I know but uh I think even King Charles might have cut a rug to that one Richard but we we have seen him dance with the cam he's not really in the same league of I've seen him doing the sber I've seen him doing the Tango shaking his stuff I mean when he was a young man he was very keen on that kind of stuff and of course I've seen him dancing um with his first wife on Plenty of occasions um so you know one doesn't have to go back that far to see the king um throwing himself around a bit like his son but I can't see him doing behaving uh the way William has at a football match for example has King Charles ever been to a football match he supports Burnley doesn't seem like a natural habitat does it he supports Burnley and actually there was quite funny moment when he met David Beckham the other week at s James's Palace and they I was kind of listening to and they were chatting about the euros and I thought this is kind of quite odd it's not really what you'd expect him to be doing but he sounded like he wasn't faking it too much I have to say he's put out an extraordinary come on to the England team absolutely after the success in their match which you didn't see last night no apparently they did quite well yeah they did yeah very good well speaking of more sport now Wimbledon and now Rebecca there's still no word on whether or not might see Katherine this week at Wimbledon as the final n but um that hasn't actually stopped online trolls has it from saying well if she's well enough Wimbledon she's well enough to do other engagements I don't I almost don't even know what to say about this because it's so disgraceful it's so disgusting um look we don't know whether she's going to attend I think I've always said I think there was a really strong chance that she would towards the latter end of the Championships um it's something she's you know very personally interested in as well as you know has a very important public role at and I think if she's well enough she can and I I asked the palace again today if you had any thoughts they said look as soon as we know we'll let you know we've made very clear that um you know we're going to be guided by her as to how well she feels on these occasions but for people to use that as a stick to beater with I just think it shows the level that social media discourse has sunk to now it's it's it's disgraceful well let's move on we're going to hear some of our viewers thoughts now thousands of you got in touch with us which we do love hearing from you and lots of you were upset with Amanda Patel's article that we discussed last week suggesting that we all stop bowing and curtsying to the royal family well Judy o for one writes I'm a progressive Democrat from America and I'm proud We Don't bow or ctsy to our presidents but I've seen Madonna Angelina Jolie Michelle Obama Vanessa Redgrave all courtsy to the Monarch and I would certainly do the same if I saw the emperor of Japan Mito I would bow if I met the delai L I would put my hands together and Namaste and if I had the great and joyful opportunity of meeting Katherine Princess of Wales I would happily curtsy it's your culture and I respect it you should cherish it very uh well thought out comment there thank you ala as a member of the staff in the palace what what was what was it like did you regularly curtsy was it seen as the dumb thing abely absolutely so the first time you would see either the monar or other members of the royal family on the day you would curtsy and you would say your majesty or depending who it was your Royal Highness and then it would be ma'am or sir afterwards um so yes it was absolutely the norm did you ever have the unfortunate situation of running into the Monarch multiple times and uh yes absolutely and sometimes it was a little bit of a ball but sometimes it was a theatrical bow um but yes absolutely you must have some great thighs I wish very very strong did did you ever get it wrong oh all the time all the time yeah and uh you always knew when you got a it wrong you had no what do you mean well you got the look what was the look like oh I can't possibly show you sorry Joe gosh you just knew when you got it wrong what about on the stairs or anywhere sort of other I remember passing a member of the royal family on the stairs I was carrying a big file of of papers they were coming down the stairs and I had to courtesy and I thought this is going to be very precarious but luckily I didn't drop anything oh such a pro next time I'm going to make sure that El's had a good few glasses of wine get the truth meanwhile Mania Factor also wrote in about this saying in school we discussed bowing or curtsying to a monarch in a nutshell we were told we were not expected to Bow because we are Americans and we have no monarchy here which is why many of us are angry when Harry and Megan want to be called by their titles if they want to be treated like royalty they need to live somewhere else gosh they also had something to say about the pat Tilman award that Prince Harry has du to pick up today I think the panel doesn't understand what a hero Pat Tilman was to a lot of Americans and giving that award that was meant to honor his love of country and sense of Duty to someone who walked away from his duty is a slap in the face to the to Pat Tilman ESPN really made a huge blunder with this we really did have a huge number of comments on this we'll read one more uh Marcia B says here's the main issue with Harry receiving this award Pat Tilman walked away from a lot of money to serve his country whereas Harry turned his back on his country in Pursuit Of Money ouch he's not on the same level of Pat Tilman a true war hero who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States Pat Tilman was all about loyalty something Harry clearly likes it is truly shameful well thank you was always for your comments we do love reading them keep them respectful and you might find yours read out here very soon well let's get back to my panel now and we'll stick with Prince Harry and this extraordinary r that just keeps rumbling on about this uh Pat Tillman award that he's been giving at the ESP in America Rebecca sources close to him um have been talking haven't they what have they said yes so some comments attributed to to you know sources close to the Duke of Sussex appeared in the telegraph which is kind of quite sympathetic to the the sussex's cause and they bemoaned the fact that the Ral had taken the Shine off him getting the award um they were emphasizing that to him his his big lifelong achievement has been Invictus and his work with the military and kind of intimated quite how hurtful he felt but I I'm not sure there'll be a great deal of sympathy for that uh Richard this talk of Harry quote unquote not finding his Niche conjures up an image of a prince who despite that all he's said and done in the last couple of years just still feels a bit lost it kind of been feels like it's been that way for the last four years I mean he wanted to break away he did break away he turned his back on Service as we've discussed um but he's sort of umbilically linked if you like still to that same cause because he needs to validate himself also it seems to me and the way the one way he can validate himself is through his military links and no one is uh criticizing those he was a brave Soldier he did two tours in um Afghanistan um but nevertheless this this constant reminder of his military connection greats with a lot of people who can't get over the fact that he chose to put financial gain and a break from Royal tradition ahead of service I wonder if uh when he accepts this award later this evening in the states he'll make reference to this controversy in some way I I mean if I was a PR advisor to him I would probably say look I'm make a point of saying I'm not accepting this for myself I'm accepting this on behalf of the team behind in Victor so I wouldn't be surprised if if that's what he does but he clearly is still determined to collect the award so what do you think Elsa is it you're obviously a Communications professional very experience and you know more uniquely than many people what the royal family deal with and how they have to operate how what have you made of the sussex's attempt at reinvention well I worked in the Royal household um when Prince Harry was was serving in the Army um before he' obviously met uh um The Duchess of Sussex um and the Harry that I knew was the media's darling I mean he was really really popular he was accessible which interestingly is not how he kind of remembers it now yeah but I'm just I can only you from what I've heard from what I've experienced you know he was he was absolutely delightful and really easy to work with and and and charming and also incredibly popular within the military and you know I'm the daughter of a naval officer I was married to a naval officer um the military who he worked with absolutely adored him you he was one of their comrades at Arms well that's it's quite unfortunate then isn't Rebecca that Lord West who is a former head of the royal Navy has also weighed in with his thoughts on this award controversy what what can you tell us about that yeah and he's a significant figure First Sea Lord um and what he says carries weight and he made very clear that he personally strongly disapproved of Harry collecting this award and more importantly he said it doesn't really go down very very well in the military either and said that he thought Harry should think very long and hard about ever doing it again and I I can imagine for Harry that kind of criticism smarts you know but you know Awards in the military aren't unheard of no and we discuss it on the program didn't we last week about members of the royal family wearing military uniforms and decorations and honors but I think what has upset a lot of people is that he's accepting this for him and as as Richard said uh someone who made very clear that he was turning his back on what he believe what we see as service in this country um do you remember Megan made that kind of phrase service is universal um and that went down badly with a very with a lot of people um because of course when you're in the military in in certainly in the UK you are fighting for your Sovereign and your country and they they take that oath very seriously these are people willing to lay down their lives they take that oath very seriously and that bond with the British Monarchy ala you obviously worked with Harry pre-marriage pre-exit pre- spare the book do you find it difficult to square your memories of him with the image now yes I think I do but again you I've been out of the household for a number of years now you know I don't know the only people who know what's really going on is is him and his wife um uh I I admire much of what he's doing now with the Invictus games I I went to a a sports reception where um members of the evictor games organizing committee were there and they're full of praise for him um and I know the veterans are as well so um as I said the only people who really know what's going on are the couple themselves do you have a particular favorite personal me memory of that time with Harry um I remember after the Diamond Jubilee concert there was a reception at Buckingham Palace um in the evening where all the people who had taken part um were there and I I've got a fantastic photograph of Prince Harry and myself um in fact standing outside the L's L which is not So Glamorous but you know with our with our yeah absolutely chatting I think you've seen that photograph i' love to see that so yeah charming and you everyone wanting to talk to him and him being incredibly engaging a I do think there is a dividing life between line between you know that time when you were working there and and how they left unfortunately um I mean Elsa is very discreet I me we was talking beforehand and saying that um uh she was the head of communications when Queen Elizabeth memor pretended to um do you remember to parachute into the Olympic stadium in 2012 and um didn't say a word to anybody and just I think remember asking me at the time are you watching the Olympic opening ceremony today and I was like yeah I am and he was like oh good I thought I still didn't know what she was going on about and then there was this whole James Bon skit you know bucking and Palace didn't even breathe a word of it I think that might be one of the last times ever I was so absolutely genuinely shocked and stunned and surprised so well done well done keeping M it's incredible shall we talk about the current king and queen now remember them y uh they'll be leaving the mainland soon Rebecca uh but they're not going that far are they we're going to the Channel Islands uh lovely go to Jersey and gery with them on Monday and Tuesday and I think because obviously we have haven't seen a lot of foreign travel in the last few months because of the king's ongoing cancer treatment it feels a bit like a foreign too everyone's really excited about it um and again I know I keep on saying it I feel like I'm kind of sounding like a boore but it is worth reminding people that you know the king is still undergoing weekly cancer treatment and yet he's going to be flying to the Channel Islands they're packing in nine engagements in two days that's after a busy working week this week he flies back on the Tuesday night and then we have the state opening of parliament on on Wednesday so he you know he is absolutely there at the kind of Royal coal face working throughout well let's not forget that you'll be do you'll be at the cace the whole time as well I'm really excited about going it's a very beautiful part of the world really is it's lovely Richard these these visits Jersey and gery they're you know quite tiny little provinces and gorgeous and it's great for the people there it's great for democracy but I can imagine that the king is probably quite frustrated at not being able to go further a field at the moment well knowing uh the king as we all do you can be absolutely sure that he is frustrated that this illness has has ruled out more expansive trips he does want to go to uh parts of the Commonwealth he wants to go to Australia and New Zealand and Canada as Monarch as king and and and it's an important it will happen but it won't happen yet but neveress I would say that they love going to to gy and Jersey I remember going with the queen and Prince Philip and they had a great time and the they couldn't get the Rolls-Royce over there to take them around so they had a Ford Escort which I thought was absolutely wonderful back in the 1980s and the eiry was one Tim Lawrence by the way and um it was incredibly relaxed trip they also went um to some of the other islands like Aly as well um but they they really enjoyed it and I think the king will love it there oh that's great to hear now Elsa you have been on a few Royal Tools in your time any what are some standout memories oh goodness so many memories um trying to keep this lot in check is the hardest honestly I know don't know know I'm only 21 really been aged by The Daily Mail um I think one of my my favorite trips was a trip to Oman with the lake Queen and Prince Phillip and they had this amazing sort of gift presentation which the media always record there's always photographers and reporters in the room when it happens and the Su of Oman who was actually a personal friend of the Queens presented Her Majesty with this huge replica of one of his palaces in solid gold um and a racehorse worth a million pounds wow and the queen gave him a book so Thrifty as ever what was the face like when he got the book still still friends oh wow but what do you do with a solid gold mini Palace um you present it again when there is a return State visit so when the so would come over it would be presented to him as say thank you we still got it it was dusted off and kind of put on the mantle piece and pride a place wasn't it it had to be a pretty big mantle to Rebecca really was it that big it was that's a merry old dance isn't it on but but actually we should do we should do probo on this one because they have these I mean the raw collection's got more than a million items of antiques yeah gift and and we see them kind of sometimes they're they're kind of moved around the Palaces on show or as they says if there's an incoming State visit they'll kind of dust off the items from that particular country over the years and bring them out but otherwise they're all you know secretly in storage um they were bizar I mean the queen got a piece of Antarctica on a Stak visit she some cowboy boots when you did a state I dread to think what the Aussies have given her I dread to think I love the idea of the Queen Elizabeth and cowboy boo I remember being in in Pakistan when uh with the then Prince of Wales The Duchess the Cornwall and and Camila was given a yak like a y we were at this mountain side and they presented her with this Yak what does where you yeah where do you put the yak well they were they were desperate for her to Pat it and I thought she'd be game and do it because obviously she's a real horsewoman but you could see her face as like there is no way I'm getting next to that yak like something out of Star Wars a yak oh my God now speaking of Camila it's her birthday next week how will she be celebrating well she'll be celebrating at the state opening of parliament okay she's 77 can roll next week um and uh I'm doing a big feature about it actually for the for the weekend just kind of where she is in her life and what's going on and you know I'm sure she would love after she's had a packed week this week Jersey gery I'm sure she'd love to kind to kick her shoes off and put her feet up but you know there is a strong sense of Duty and she'll be out on uh out on display next to the king with the um I've checked and she will be it'll be a full State opening because sometimes if we've had a couple of State openings because we had successive changes of governments they'll do a more low-key one do you remember Queen Elizabeth doing a in a hat and a yeah absolutely and a her normal suit before but this will be the full shebang so we will see Camila wearing the diamond diadem uh you know we'll see the Imperial State CR will you know it'll be horses carriages the lot Elsa you would have been working for the palace at the time when Camila officially became part of the firm could you have ever imagined the transformation in her in The public's opinion of her and what what what do you make of it all I think she deserves the credit I mean especially seeing how she's really stepped up to the mark while the King has been incapacitated in having his his treatment for for cancer I mean she is really she's grown into the role um all the reading room stuff that she's been doing I just think it's she's quite inspirational and and obviously a huge support to him so I remember when the engagement was announced I's actually on maternity leave and turning on television thinking Cy this is this has happened now did anyone think it would and now people just don't bet an IID I don't think it's amazing isn't it um now it would be remiss not to have the princess and update it's time for the princess and section of the show how how is her health after that nasty accident and still no Fan Fair producer I know I'll start singing soon that's the threat um there is no official news yeah but I'm I'm pretty confident we'll see something very very imminently that's probably all I can say um uh she's recuperating still at home at gatam Park um you know she's taking it slowly um because that's what she's been advised to do by the doctors because anyone who suffered you know that level of concussion needs to be a little careful but I'm told there's a lot of corser optimism an ever take it slowly Richard no I can imagine her bridling at all this um um yeah I'm sure we'll see her soon yeah you you Elsa you were her personal press secretary princess and I mean wow that seems like a formidable job to take on she works so hard I know everyone says so but seeing it you know firsthand she works phenomenally hard and she's really passionate about the causes that she supports I remember it was a late on a Friday night and she just come back from visiting a lighthouse in Scotland we were talking about her Pon fory we just stood chatting well she did the all chatting live during the listening for half an hour about light lighthouses and it was just absolutely fascinating and she was passionate about it you retained all that information I don't ask me any questions oh my gosh so um what is it like though I know that I would probably struggle to match and stamina levels is is is that tough for the staff I think they do play catchup with her I mean she's you she's on to the next engagement as soon as the other one's finished I mean her phenomenal stamina but I think it's because she gets a lot out of it you know she does love meeting people she really is in command of her brief I mean she knows all the facts and she's genuinely interested and I think that's joy for her life so she's probably just handcuffed to a resting CH I can't see her going stepping back anytime soon that's for sure wow we do love an and we know that you do too but will be sticking with the queen just for now and ahead of her birthday next week here are some of our favorite pictures of her with the Royal Family [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] wishing her majesty Queen a very happy birthday for next week from all of us here at Palace confidential and a reminder again if you don't subscribe to our Channel please do and help us to get towards that 300,000 mark my thanks to Elsa Rebecca Richard and to you for watching we'll see you next week bye-bye
