for an actor it usually takes years of struggle to make a career for an actress that same struggle is made more complicated by the fact that fewer roles are written for women and the range in scope of those roles tend to be limited as men age the number of roles available to them does not diminish however our veteran actresses are frequently overlooked and marginalized it has been my privilege to learn from and collaborate with many great women in theater and film and it is my honor to present to these four women whose artistry humanity and sheer resilience has already qualified them as winners by any definition that counts the nominees for leading actress in a play are Nancy Marchand black comedy diana rigg Madea Joan Rivers Joe rivers Sally Marr and her escorts anna deavere Smith Twilight Los Angeles and the Tony Award goes to Vanna rigged today ladies and gentlemen this is a very very great honor indeed you've also honored Euripides Jonathan Kent the peerless company that I work with the production staff and the crew of the theater of the Longacre for without them I would not be here holding this my thanks to Bill Kenwright who brought us over to American equity who allowed us over I shall carry this home not only this but wonderful memories of the American audiences and playing on Broadway thank you
