Diamond® Veneer Plaster Systems

I'm Dean Johnson from the PBS home-improvement series hometime and this is a home we built on a series called our house with character on that series we show people how we built a home and we talk application this ensures a uniform continuous plaster application the panels are screwed directly to the framing all the joints are treated with a special glass fiber mesh tape the tape is available either self-adhering or for staple attachment after all the joints are taped the panels are ready for application of the veneer plaster the one coat system consists of one coat of diamond interior finished plaster applied over the gypsum board base the first step in the one coat system is to embed or pre fill the tape joints with finished plaster once all the joints are treated the finished plaster is applied over the entire board surface in a scratch and double-up method of application in this type of application a first layer of plaster is applied over the entire wall or ceiling surface then a second layer is immediately applied over the first to achieve a uniform single coat of plaster 1/16 to three thirty-seconds of an inch thick once the plaster becomes firm the surface can be trialed smooth or can be textured to achieve a variety of looks the one coat system provides a number of aesthetic and performance benefits over drywall including a choice of smooth or textured finishes superior abrasion resistance better joint hiding and improved nail pipe resistance it delivers a uniform monolithic look and can be completely installed in fewer steps on a typical drywall installation best of all the one coat diamond veneer plaster system costs only about 25% more than install drywall and that's significantly less than the cost of conventional three coat plaster the one code system however may not be able to completely compensate for wall undulations shadowing and other minor defects that may be visible under oblique lighting conditions just as the one coat system provides a dramatic upgrade over drywall the to coat diamond veneer plaster system delivers a significant appearance upgrade over the one coat system the application of the two coat system is similar to that of a one coat system however after the base panels are attached and the joints reinforced and prefilled diamond veneer base coat plaster is applied 1/16 to three thirty-seconds of an inch thick over the entire wall surface the base coat provides a strong level monolithic base which ensures proper bond and suction of the finish coat and helps to minimize surface irregularities in the finish application the finished coat is applied in a 116 3/32 of an inch thickness over the base coat one of the benefits of the to coat system is that several different types of plaster finish materials can be used including standard job prepared lime gauging finishes mill mix prepackaged finishes in one coat veneer plaster products each provides slightly different performance and aesthetic benefits whatever finish you choose the end result of a two coat application will be a smoother more monolithic look a look that's noticeably superior to a one coat system the two code system is a logical solution for handling critical appearance areas such as vaulted ceilings arched walls curved stairwells and other areas where critical lighting conditions can create appearance problems when using conventional drywall the two code system is also ideal for creating ornamental details such as cornices medallions and other decorative accents overall the two coat appearance is more uniform there are fewer surface imperfections and angles are straighter and sharper even minor wall and ceiling construction imperfections can usually be compensated for us gypsum companies veneer plaster to coat system costs approximately 50% more than standard drywall however it provides the ultimate in veneer plaster appearance a look exceeded only by that of conventional plaster systems finishes for the two coat system can be applied smooth or textured one choice in smooth finish coats is diamond interior finished plaster which is what we use for this house it combines good workability with excellent abrasion resistance or you can choose a lime gauging finish although it's not quite as abrasion resistant is the diamond finish lime gauging is even easier to work with and better for creating curved or detailed wall surfaces after allowing the surface to dry completely smooth finishes can then be decorated with either paint or wall coverings for textured looks you'll achieve excellent results using lime sand and Keene cement finishes a variety of texture looks can be achieved including swirl skip trowel sand float and Spanish so whether you choose United States gypsum
