hi I'm Tim Carter from master builder comm and I want to show you a couple of diagonal braces these are very important and they help keep a structure square so that it doesn't collapse as you're building the home because there's a lot of weight and crazy things can happen on windy days look at this right here this is a flat 2x4 that's nailed on the underside of the common roof rafters and it goes up in an angle all the way to the ridge beam and when it's nailed into each particular roof rafter it helps keep those roof rafters nice and square now look at this this wall right here big big wall and it's very important because it's carrying a lot of the weight of these roof rafters it's very important that that wall also does not collapse and this is a piece of metal diagonal bracing that runs all the way from the bottom plate all the way up at an angle look at this it's climbing going up up up up up up up all the way here to the top plate and you can see at each location what's happened is it's nailed into each stud and because this bracing is shaped like a letter T you can see it's flat here but then it sticks out here it's very very strong and of course the way it's installed is the contractor Chuck's a line on this side of the wall and along that cut line he cuts down with his circular saw a depth deeper than this piece of metal is right here and it's easy then to install this particular diagonal brace bracing very very important don't forget it on your home as you build it don't let your builder do it without it very very very important I'm Tim Carter for ask the Builder com if you want to discover more home improvement tips go to ask the Builder com you
