did you know hundreds of people every year are injured and even die from collapsing decks who knew i only recently discovered this when i was searching for ways to brace my own deck when i saw all the chaos that can happen i figured i'd better get busy sooner rather than later i'm standing here under my deck this is a thousand square foot deck and it sits about 10 feet off the ground at the highest point this deck was never built right from the start it sits on four by four posts really should be on minimum six by six and eight by eight posts would even be better this deck has always had a bit of sway back and forth and it's always been a structural concern to me so to make it last one more year we're going to add these simple cross braces to strengthen up the structure of this thing and hopefully get us through another year so if you're new here i'm rob welcome to hammered halo and if you guys are down for it let's go ahead and get these braces installed our deck has seen better days it's about 20 years old starting to rot it's got these 12 foot cross members that are in place which are really not doing anything and they're going to come out after we get the new cross beams in i'm going to be using two by sixes for the new cross members i'm going to cut them at five feet from point to point each end will be cut at 45 degree angle and i'm going to use the first cut as a template for all the rest [Applause] [Applause] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] i'd do this all over again with you what renovations would you yeah why i don't know it's fun you like renovating i do yeah [Music] [Applause] coming to help you coming to help me you know what we're doing bracing yeah bracing this deck [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] who loves me [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] times [Music] [Applause] so i think we can take these off now yeah because there there's no sway this way so this way was this way so if we take these off because they're an eyesore anyhow let's just pull those off and go test the sway the other way [Music] [Applause] [Music] he [Music] sometimes [Applause] you see the bird's nest no it comes every year yeah where is it up in here every year should we take it down probably no this is home they come here every year it's their nest do they use it every year yes every year i've left it here for forever adding these cross members made a huge difference and took about 90 percent of the sway out of this deck and by removing the opposite cross members that were 12 feet long really made the deck look a little nicer honestly it still looks like crap but at least i feel comfortable walking around on it i feel comfortable with my family walking around on it so if you have any kind of movement in a deck of your own i would suggest adding some cross members to strengthen it up it really is a simple fix and it's an easy diy project to take on thanks for watching and if you like the video make sure you hit that thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe and follow along as we take on new and exciting diy projects smile you
