[Music] hi everyone Jeff here from car-buying tips.com channel here on YouTube where since 1999 our team of consumer advocates has done both protecting and educating you the American car buying public teaching you everything about used cars new cars financing leasing and avoiding scams and we even do tool reviews and today's tool review we are going to be reviewing these two battery adapters here hey let me ask him a question do you have any of these old-style Dewalt drills here like the XR P series here that takes these older style lithium-ion batteries here and you know they don't make these anymore and if your battery's dying you need to get newer batteries or maybe you want to try to use some of the more modern batteries that don't fit your drill what do you do well in today's video here we're going to review these two battery adapters here for you one is from Dewalt the other one is from Whateley and it all starts right now okay so here's your XRP drill here with the 18-volt lithium-ion battery on it here and this is the form factor of what it looks like here right and so the older style DeWall tools you would always have to stick the battery into the hole in the bottom of the tool like that okay the newer batteries as you can see have have this design here now the reason why this has become a problem for Dewalt owners is that when these series of drills were originally designed they were designed for NiCad batteries and so they didn't have all of the protection that was needed so the protection had to be put into all of the batteries here and the newer ones for the lithium-ion but nowadays though they've realized that it's much more cost effective to put the protection in the tool which they've done in the later series of tools here like this XR series impact driver right here okay so here's the older drill here and you can see looking down into the hole there where the battery plugs in and it goes way deep in there and it makes contact with those two contacts back in there so here's a close-up of the older battery here this is the old lithium-ion battery and there's your two leads that once the battery plugs into the bottom of the drill there it makes contact up inside here this one is slightly more dangerous than the newer batteries because here you could actually short these two leads if you had like foil in your hand or anything else metallic if you were holding steel wool or something you could actually short these two leads together that would be almost a hundred percent impossible with the newer batteries so for example here is the newer impact driver here this is the DCF eight eight seven impact driver so this one's been out a few years now and this is the battery that it takes and it slides on like that so all of the newer batteries just slide on and click into place like that so here's the bottom of the impact driver here and you can see how the leads are so the battery slides right in to make contact with those leads that protrude out there so this is the very latest XR series Dewalt lithium-ion battery so this is the five amp hour battery but you can see how there's no exposed leads or anything so once the slides into the drill that's how it makes its contact the DeWalt battery adapter sells for twenty seven dollars on Amazon and the Whateley battery adapter sells for fourteen dollars we will put links down in the video description below for you so you can go and check these out for yourself okay so the dEWALT's DCA 18 20 20 volt max battery adapter for 18 volt tools allows for the use of 20 volt max batteries in most 18 volt of all tools it requires the use of a 20 volt max Dewalt charger so that means if you've already got the newer Dewalt batteries that you're adapting to it some assuming you likely will have the charger that goes with it and the wall tells you do not use this adapter here with the premium Dewalt batteries in the DC 970 or the DC 759 now chances are many of you may not have those tool tools so that's a non-issue for you also the DeWalt 20 volt max battery adapter for 18 volt tools here comes with a three year warranty and one year of service and it comes with 90 day money back guarantee this DeWall 20 volt max battery adapter for 18 volt tools is manufactured in the country of Thailand okay so the DeWalt DC a 18:20 battery adapter here weighs in at 6.6 ounces and for those of our friends in Europe here it weighs in at 188 grams okay so this Whateley model wtl 18 20 20 volt max - 18 volt adapter here the manufacturer claims that it supports the milwaukee m 18 batteries and it supposedly will work with the following Dewalt batteries the DC 90 180 the DC 909 6 the DC 9 1 8 1 and the DC 9 1 a - now here on the back of the Whateley battery adapter here you can see they have an interesting added bonus here for you so this right here is a USB charger so while it's connected to your tool they were just sitting on the counter you can use it as a lifeboat here to charge your phone so it gives you 5 volts out along with 2 amps so this should charge most of the phones out there and this feature is not present on the DeWalt battery adapter which was very surprising because most of the companies that make these adapters have this feature so here you can see it in place here charging the phone and it says it's got about an hour and a half left or so and so it's not exactly because the battery is at 50% here on the phone so it's not like super fast charging but it is reasonably fast it's not like some of the other ones that will tell you it takes five hours to charge so at least this is what it looks like here your USB cord plugs in here and then right into your phone now many of you might already have solutions for charging your phone anyway like other radios or a dedicated phone charger nearby so this might not be a deal-breaker if it doesn't have it on the DeWalt here for those of you that are expecting to see one okay so here's both the DeWalt and the Whateley battery adapters here side by side and you can see they look pretty much almost exactly the same size they stand at the same height the one key difference you can see here in the form factors is that the Whateley holds the drill flat and straight upright whereas the door looks like it's slightly angled backwards here now if you notice right here you can see that the DeWalt adapter here has texture on it but here on the Whateley battery adapter here you can see you can almost see a slight texture but you can't feel it so for the most part it feels pretty smooth the Lately battery adapter here as you can see is sonically welded together there's no screws or anything on it and it's lighter than the DeWalt adapter however the DeWalt adapter here this battery adapter is put together with screws here and if you look the texture and the material of the plastic is thicker and it's made out of the same plastic that they use in the tool so those of you who already own DeWall tools will recognize this and the look and feel of it as well so the DeWalt battery adapter here just seems and feels you know when you're holding it in your hand it feels thicker and more rugged than the Whateley okay now here's a comparison of the underside of both of these battery adapters here the DeWalt on the left and the Whateley here on the right and if you look at the leads you'll see a slight difference in these these battery leads right here the and the Whateley adapter here the two leads in the middle don't go all the way back like these other ones in fact none of these go all the way back now our guess and this is just our speculating we think that this design is probably better on the DeWalt side because when you're sliding the batteries in and they go to make contact if it pushes against these contacts here they're protected by the backing here they'll run up against the backing whereas these here could have a tendency to rock backward they could get warped or broken we don't know but that's our guess okay so let's see how we attach these two adapters so here's the old battery that we're going to take off of the XRP drill and then the Whateley adapter just snaps right in like this and then the DeWalt adapter just snaps in like this so now we have both adapters on both drills okay so now we have two matching five amp power batteries and you just slide it on to the bottom of the Whateley adapter on this one and then here on the other one here on the DeWalt adapter you slide it in there and that has a much more distinct click you really feel that battery click into place on the DeWalt where is on the Whateley it just kind of you're kind of wanting to feel for the click you know you know you don't really feel it that's the difference there so here they are side by side for your viewing pleasure the Whateley is right here this is the adapter here in the battery here the DeWalt adapter is right here and the battery here and you can actually see how much of this is the adapter but you know the older drill is a lot faded by now but you can see how it sets the drill up at a slight angle now a lot of people were complaining on the forums that once you've got this battery adapter on to the drills that you couldn't get them back off again but we haven't seen that so let's take the battery off of the adapter here so the adapters right here this is the Whateley one and you push in the two tabs and it comes right out C so we haven't seen that problem maybe people were trying to do this maybe they've they had a bigger battery like this and they're trying to reach around it and you can't get a good grip on the buttons like that you really you're better off just taking off the battery and then it pulls straight out we haven't seen not once a single problem not with the Whateley let's try it with the DeWalt one now now some people even said that they had to resort to prying the DeWalt battery adapter here off of the drill with screwdrivers and you don't need to go through that I mean look watch this here's another case where hey maybe you're reaching around too far and you can't get a good grip you pull the battery off you squeeze the two buttons it's and the DeWalt one actually is a lot smoother than the Whateley if you noticed on the previous scene the Whateley I had to give it a little bit of a tug to get it off but the Deval just smooth okay now if you you'll notice here that usually these come with a red cap on them here and Dewalt tells you not to leave these sitting like this attached to the battery unless it's in the tool so you don't want to store it like this because it could discharge the battery we don't know if the weight leaves or the others are the same but I guess you could assume that they are okay so let's measure the voltage here on the vault battery adapter here and you can see it comes in a twenty point five six volt we call this a no load voltage here so you're going to see twenty volts no load that's the rating of the battery the Walt always tells you that the nominal voltage is actually going to be around 18 volts so as soon as you plug this into a drill and start using it it's going to be 18 volts output okay so now here if I come in here and measure this older lithium the 18 volt here you can see he's coming in at what is the twenty twenty point nine nine so how does an eighteen volt battery measure almost twenty one votes well the reason is that between these two technology platforms of these batteries they're the cells are essentially the same it's essentially the same battery between the eighteen volt and the 20 volt it's just all different packaging okay so the other main difference between these two battery platforms here is these older 18 volt lithium ion batteries have protection circuitry in them they have short circuit protection low voltage protection all sorts of circuitry in there to protect the battery these newer batteries to make them cheaper more efficiently they don't have the protection in them but you still have to protect them but that is inside the drills all those tools have the protection for the battery inside the tool not in the battery okay so here's the drill with the battery adapter in the battery and we're going to make it whole here okay so now we're trying it with the drill here with the Whateley adapter and the five amp hour battery alright so now I have a question do you think either of those battery adapters will work here with a Dewalt flex volt battery let's take a look alright so here we have the DeWalt battery adapter and then here's the the Whateley here and then here's the flexible battery so we're going to try to slide it on here and you're going to see here why it doesn't work because as you try to slide it on there's a feature here on the flex volt battery and another feature here on the adapter here that prevents you from plugging in a flex volt battery now Dewalt does say and their manual not to use this with a flexible patter it says it's not compatible and that's why it's not compatible because they purposely designed it so that you can't even physically connect that flexible battery on there we don't know why but that's the case okay so here's the Whateley battery adapter now and you'll see it just slides right arms at the top of the flexible battery there now at least we can test the Whateley battery adapter here to see if it will work with this Dewalt flexible battery so here's the stack up here and as you can see the Whateley battery adapter has no problem adapting to the DeWalt flexible so we don't know why the wall doesn't want to use it with that because the whole purpose of this flex volt is if you have a 20 volt tool connected up to it it should know that it's a 20 volt tool now you'll notice the color of the Whateley battery adapter here is red that's the Milwaukee color because this is compatible with the m18 batteries as well and you know what all of our Milwaukee fans always say if an ain't red it stays in the shed okay so now here we have a Milwaukee m18 red lithium XC battery here and we're going to try hugging it up here now you'll see this is a really tight fit it's not perfect and you get it all the way in there and then you see it kind of snaps right in so here's our view of it right here there's the side view okay so now we are going to take our battery our m18 milwaukee battery here with the Whateley battery adapter and stick it here onto the saws and so there you have it there you go so here's proof here that the weight league battery adapter here does indeed work with a Milwaukee m18 battery now the problem here is this battery this Milwaukee battery does not come off very easily now you have to kind of control a little I mean we tried pushing both sides in like we normally do with the red buttons there and you can see it's a you really got a tug on it and in fact we couldn't even get it started to separate at all there without banging it against the edge of the table back over here first to give it a head start okay so now we're going to see if we can't get this the wall to DC 18:20 battery adapter here to fit onto this Milwaukee m18 battery so it would normally go right over here and so it looks like right off the bat we can't get it to fit around just doesn't seem to want to let's take a look so the reason why the DeWalt battery adapter will not fit on to this Milwaukee m18 battery here is because if you look right here where this is supposed to go in and slide underneath the in these grooves here right the width of this is wider than the opening there so see right there how it just jams up right there on that leading wall there of the front of the battery so you can't even ever get to the point where you'll get that m18 battery to fit its way in there so this is a no-go okay so now if you look at the difference here between the DeWalt battery here the yellow battery on the left and the black milwaukee m18 battery here on the right look at these leading edges here you see the difference now contact wise these batteries are identical they have the same layout in the same contacts in the same place look how how much wider this ledge here is on the Milwaukee better than it is on the DeWalt battery so the DeWalt battery here you can see it cuts out and it narrows down and so that's what enables it to fit into its own battery adapter there like that that's why the battery adapter will not fit on to the Milwaukee battery okay so here's your two battery adapters here and it's a good thing we bought both and tested them both for you because there's always little nuances pros and cons for each type of device that you buy with this one here I would say the cons are that the plastics a little bit thin and it doesn't have the texture or even the color to match your your tool but it does have the USB port on it we like that and it it's not screwed together it's it's basically sonically welded okay and it holds your drill straight up whereas the DeWalt one here holds your drill at an angle that the what one does not work with the Flex volt battery here but the Whateley unit here does work with the Flex volt battery the DeWalt is much more feels more rugged and thick and heavier in your hand and it closely matches the texture and look and feel of your tool here and it's got the screws on here there it's all screwed together here like this too and so there you have it and you have to decide for yourself after seeing this review here which of those features works for you in the cost two because this one's basically fifteen dollars this one's basically twenty seven dollars well if you're finding this video useful
