you know hey everybody it's Roy here I'm gonna be doing a little poster process video where I make a poster live and kind of explain some of my decision making along the way and talk about where these ideas are coming from or why I'm doing certain things a certain way so I guess to start today I had this idea I like the phrase it's in my notes because I'm constantly writing down little phrases I like the phrase stranded in time I don't know if it's super cliche or not but we're gonna go with it for for today today is post or 362 and I like the idea of continuing some sort of collage ask really textural like maybe almost a newsprint II feel like we have like we did yesterday there's another example I think I like this so some collage work here where I'm gonna start maybe pull some imagery do some kind of off-kilter crazy typography expressive stuff maybe maybe something along these lines as well maybe we'll discover there's some imagery that pertains to this subject of strained at a time that we can start to incorporate I like the idea of graphs or metaphors or something like that that we could throw in as well so I guess just to start things off I've never done anything like this where I've had to justify my decisions or explain why I made like making the minut little movements and compositional decisions so this is going to be this is this is new for me so I'm just gonna like kind of just have at it and see what happens so in the spirit of Wolfgang pine guard because I like that guy a lot I think we're going to use a accidents grotesque because I know he likes that I really love this guy love love love pretty much everything this guy's done is like the bomb.com so I think this is he's going to serve as a launch point piece of inspiration oh I love that I love this kind of halftone pattern that he's got here is crossing on typography symbol symbols and these really stark high contrast just chunks I almost feel like big pink blotches in here I love this I love how he starts to use like body copy as structure as just compositional elements he's not super it's just not super delicate about all these typographic use and I really really appreciate that so this is cool I love this I actually I think I'm gonna use I'm gonna use this as my launching off point as inspiration for this you're gonna see how I draw inspiration from things sometimes it's super literal sometimes I'm like well I really just like the circles I'm gonna use circles sometimes it's like I like the idea of this I like the way he's incorporating them I just like the idea that it's just some huge black monolithic structure in the middle of the composition but in this case I don't know exactly what I like about it or exactly what I'm gonna pull from it and but I really like this I also like how it feels like the whole thing is turned on its side I'm not sure if I'm really going to tap into that necessarily but I think that's an interesting observation like even as I'm looking at this my head is tilted like to the right slightly because I'm trying to read it as if it's been cranked 90 degrees clockwise although I don't think it has so that's cool stranded in time let's just do a google of this and see what's out there it looks like a video game of some kind which I'm not interested in kind of thing like who talked who who's a figure in like Einstein talks a lot about time and space time Einstein space time let's see what comes up oh yeah Einstein space time speed of light maybe we could use some cool portraiture of Einstein there's good stuff here I don't this is famous but I think this does not really fit maybe a more serious demeanor of the topic I want to find something that maybe isn't quite so iconic it's just even real that doesn't look real to me this is interesting although I I don't know I like a younger one actually somehow it fits into this this theme of time for me I don't know it is kind of nondescript I think this is going to be more a compositional study rather than a storytelling study but just for now I like this image so we're gonna we're gonna steal this make a little bigger and drop it down and we'll forget about it in the layers so stranded in time I'm just going to start to break up this word a little bit start to get kind of expressive with it and something gets smaller maybe we can make it bolder strand it okay I like that I want the end to not be italic I just want have to be bold and I want the D to just be bold so you like this action happening in the middle it's kind of like quirky feels a little weird strand okay you know make sure you gonna take the tracking back to zero except in the s we're gonna crank it down to negative 1/25 we're gonna crush those two letters together so this starts to feel like really weird and really walk right I just like the way that feels stranded in we're decently fast and right now I'm just on a trackpad so I'm not going as fast as I probably could it's a little difficult I think this could actually be italic because those we have some strong vertical pieces here that kind of feels cool stranded in is not the focus of the topic you know stranded and time are the two like beefy words that we kind of want to call out something I'm not gonna draw too much emphasis on this although I think we can bring down the tracking slightly stranded in time I think time might even be the big word I don't know I can't tell which one is more important stranded or time okay so right now I'm just like shooting from the hip here I don't really know what I'm doing exactly honestly sometimes what I do is I just go back and I look at my old stuff for inspiration I'm like what did i do what did I do that was successful what's unsuccessful so right here this is just like an interesting like lock up I'm finding ways to start to merge the type in in ways that are maybe unexpected so maybe maybe we can start to do that here just maybe straight ahead moves up get that opportunity for in to come in maybe it's no longer italic actually I'll just do this that becomes really hard to read it looks like stranded strain I don't like to well that's this is kind of peculiar kind of like that some weird way I don't know you guys are seeing this live with me so who knows where this is gonna go we might get 15 minutes in and realized it's garbage and we'll scrap it and that's okay because this is a process video I guess so stranded in time we're gonna give this the italic treatment as well and I just like the way that looks that's not a good rationale for doing something but okay there's something interesting happening here where these are the D and the I why not but I don't think it's exactly a winner of a composition just yet sometimes blend modes will reveal interesting things not in this case I don't think well let's go back to Vanguard and see what he's up to here oh okay actually like this so I think what part of what's wrong with this I think strand is the first word not straya so straight or first syllable I mean and let's go all capitals huh now we're talking see now this is a little better than me now which is good we get the e to be this a have the same x height it's the rest a minute that's kind of that's kind of ugly like that either so I'm not trying to go dark on you just thinking to myself I'm always looking for interesting ways to break things up that both break their rules but also kind of I think the reason I like the way that that happened is because the am an are tied now the DD in the ear tight so I kind of create this central focal point here maybe with the typography maybe or maybe maybe it won't work we'll see so I actually do kind of like this as it is for the first time in this video I'm liking something we have which is good so I'm going to introduce this picture and what I'm going to do is I'm gonna I'm gonna keep it maybe a little more obscure this is cool I like this you can still tell John Stein but I'm not spoon-feeding anybody don't you don't get right away that it is him necessarily stranded I hope this doesn't come across as like some weird conspiracy that Einstein is still alive stranded in and maybe will be really bold and will throw time at the bottom black oh I kind of like this it's getting kind of interesting so right there what I'm doing is I'm looking to line up time and Einstein picture here you also probably saw me before trying to line up this what I'm doing is I'm creating this strong vertical axis that's happening right here and if you're familiar with the rule of thirds if we divide this poster up into three sections equal sections horizontally and vertically where those grid pieces line up are going to be like these four corners here and those are typically pretty good like safe spaces for a focal point of a composition because they're asymmetrical and off they follow fall into the rule of thirds which is basically like they're it's kind of the same universe as the golden ratio so I visually it's a visually pleasing place to put a composition compositional focal point so that's why I think instinctively I start to put things there because I'm looking for that like the relationship of the white space here to the relationship of the white space down here so this is interesting but what I'm starting to notice is these feel like disparate parts stranded in time visually do not have a ton of relationship with one another because they're so far apart strand and dead you can tell are one piece because they're so closer in time feel like they're just not part of the same family so what I need to do is I need to make everything feel like it's part of the same family which means bringing in up and I think time can actually stay because it's kind of punctuated or e it's kind of like stranded and and then the reveal is time so I think that might actually be able to stay down at the bottom if I can find a good way to incorporate the word in and I actually think it could just be as simple as moving it up slightly to here this is a little uncomfortable the way that those just line up so I think if I cross if I just cross it or if I just bring it over enough like that see even here what I think what I'm doing is like this this gray to this white space is probably pretty close to like 1 to 2 ratio which is again the rule of thirds I'm liking this a little more I don't like doing that in doesn't really have any character like just as letter forms there's not a lot of cool action happening there I think that what's dumb looking for ways to maybe break this up and it might just be what I started to do is I start to distort the entire word maybe the tracking and stuff is fine as it is something that might make this feel a little more contemporary is to add a stroke to it so the word in in particular so let me do that where's that layer style stroke so this already starts to feel a little more contemporary so it's got some contemporary flavor once you start adding our stroke like that and I think that's fine for something like this it might pull it out of feeling a little older into something more new-age maybe or maybe we'll see I'm not certain about all in any of this yet bold they make a metallic here that's cool another space behind the tee is too much so we're gonna crank that down to negative 75 cool I think if I pull it up that doesn't feel good down here but since it's covered up I think that's uh it looks looks kind of cool stranded in time alright so now I'm thinking this is like this is okay I think this is passable so what needs to happen now is if starting to I need to start adding supporting elements they're gonna tie all these things together that could be done with more shapes more line imagery more typography I'm interested in that in this case what I think is I'm going to go back to this vine cart reference and I like these big blocky shapes that he's introduced and I like that too and I think if we if we consider space-time there might be some interesting shapes that we can pull that kind of fit into this theme these are all kind of like tacky textbook images I was hoping for something a little more like graphic these are kind of cool I wish they weren't so hand drawn if I had these in there more geometric and that's kind of almost cool this is cool I don't know what this is all about but I'm gonna steal this and what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna erase I just like this central vertical graphic the rest of it is not great and it's in Comic Sans so it has to go oh woops my hardness my erasers way down there and then we decided to multiply and we got this interesting graphic kind of cool it might be stupid we will find out as we as we continue to work what I don't like right off the bat is I see that this is competing with the word in because this is like this is line work and so is the word and now that we've made it a stroke so I'm thinking we might just be able to bring the word in back to just having no stroke and having regular fill because I think that this this whatever this graphic is might start to break things up maybe this is this is not feeling super dialed in yet but that's okay I might I like this graphic and I think I'm just gonna save it for later mm-hmm I think what I realize now is that I need to solve the problem of this word and otherwise it's gonna come back to bite me in the butt I don't want to just give it some poor treatment like the stroke that wasn't really doing it wasn't really tackling the problem at its core which means in is not winning right now I don't want to bring it down here because then it feels way too just joint it between the word stranded and in time like strand I think these need to be together it might be okay as it is I think it is actually what I'm gonna do though is I'm gonna duplicate it and rasterize the duplication and that lets me kind of do some distortion to this and I'm just gonna I'm just gonna do some weird stuff to kind of mess it up a little bit I like that I'm gonna do the same with strand and dead I'm just going to just like kind of add some quark to them so they start to feel a little more tactile in in nature a little more handmade potentially so what I'm doing here is I'm making selections of the this this object stranded I'm duplicating it with command J and then I'm kind of distorting the duplication just there just like a vague distortion and then I'm merging it back with the original objects and now this is one whole piece again yeah you can you can be you can even distort the original object see I like that that might be kind of cool this is starting to feel a little more tactile and I like that because the imperfections start to make things big a little cooler to me I guess let's see here let's take our [Music] rotated just slightly for those of you that are curious of how I'm doing this I'm just again taking this marquee tool it's M in Photoshop and you can take a selection and if you hold down command on a Mac you can like click and drag that selection around you can do command T and you can transform and rotate it stretch it whatever you want to do and then command D will undo any selection that you have because I remember when I first started Photoshop I was like how do I move stuff how do I like you think it's a little little difficult to figure out right away this is something small but I don't like this little black piece right here so I'm just going to move that line sign picture up just lightly to get rid of that that feels better to me actually no it doesn't i think strand it needs to come down its minut the spacing i wonder if i can shrink down einstein to make it okay that's fine so this is starting to feel kind of cool right I think we can actually crank the Einstein not that much just a tiny bit kind of like that all right this is feeling good to me this is starting to feel good what I'm gonna do now is I want to find oh I do have this graphical element in here or is it don't love this really don't but I'm not I'm not ready to lose it quite yet so we'll just throw it at the bottom of our layers and turn it off this is cool time space some sort of graph this might be very interesting this is what I do sometimes I just rip stuff you know like that's a cool visual let's take it so we I'm gonna turn this so we get it on at all guys this might be really good so because what's happening here is we get too strong for vocal point and then it branches off so what I might do it might be it might be too much but can we put this here oh my god that now we're talking okay there's a cliche to put on his eye yeah I don't do that they look stupid oh this is so good okay this is awesome like that that's just like a lucky moment right so okay I should back up I'm not even explaining anything so this graphic that I just found I loved because what it's doing is it has this focal point in in a corner as does our composition it has to a horizontal and a vertical axis and then it has all these other like detailed pieces around it and that's like kind of the theme of this composition we have this strong vertical axis with a strong horizontal axis and then what we're gonna do is we're gonna start adding supporting details in here to create a strong composition so I am digging it I really like that that lines up with things it might not be in the perfect spot now necessarily but I think it's cool and I think we can use it I'm not loving the way that these line up perfectly on the end I might actually just be a matter of making it bigger doing something like this it's kind of cool I think I can get behind that and I think it's cool that you're still able to tell at Einstein something I also like to do is I like to grab my image imagery and bring them into the Camera Raw filter I'm not actually sure how to do this through the menu I think you can hit command shift a on a Mac or I would assume on PC it's control shift day it'll bring up Camera Raw filter and I just like to crank up the clarity on the images sometimes introduce a little bit of grain makes you feel a little more old I don't know if that might have been too dramatic I need to maybe not do that much hold on it's not working here that was a little too much clarity was a little they just don't look good that's cool okay so yeah I'm really liking the way this is gone so we get this strong like the strong focal point element but the but the fact that the the punctuated Tori the final word time is at the bottom here it forces you to travel through the entire composition so far stranded in time you really have to think about it and this graphic kind of supports it other way it's like you have a starting point you have to move there's some journey involved maybe might be cliche but I think visually it's starting to add up and it starting to look nice if we go back to where this all started it was this vine guard composition that I really liked and I like some things that I look at see he's kind of got something similar going on here this arc he's lying shooting out from it and that's similar to what we have working for us here I didn't make this myself but I think it's a cool I collage element that we can have you know I really do like this half tone effect and I would love to do that right you know what I think I think we can let's just do it just to see how it looks and this might be an opportunity for you guys to learn how to do some halftone / bit mapping and Photoshop not an expert but I could be cool so I'm just going to call this bitmap dot PSD what you have to do is you have to convert to grayscale your document it'll make you merge everything and now you've completely this is why I made a separate PSD so I don't start to destroy my original document and then once you're in grayscale you can go to mode bitmap flatten layers you have to hit okay these are the settings that I've had last time I'm just gonna click do and see what happens halftone screen is cool because that's kind of a texture that we're going through is like this halftone pattern we hit okay frequency 10 angle 45 I have no idea what that means let's just hit OK and there you have it that obviously looks really bad so we're gonna go back and we're gonna mess around until we find some of those we get the settings right so it looks cool flat layers yes I'll put 300 I believe it's still good frequency 10 I think what we want is a frequency to be less if I if I'm thinking about no I was wrong we wanted to be higher okay so let's just do what was it performs 10 let's do 75 just to see how that looks that looks terrible too so it's got to be somewhere this is kind of what we want but we just don't want it at that type of frequency so we want to do this again it's such a like slow painful process 2:45 it's still too much isn't it let's do 25 now we're talking that's kind of cool I don't know if there's just me it looks kind of blue no okay so I like that for you can see I'm not sure I like the shape so we can go in in the bitmap section here and the shape is round see what happens when we do ellipse it's kind of cool too I don't know how much I'm loving it I think it's kind of blue just because my screen is looking weird if I not look blue on your end I don't really love that so much I'm not I'm not going to worry about it I like the way that it looks on its own we don't have to copy this piece for peace but I just thought this halftone looks kind of cool so we can go for it okay yeah well let's just keep chugging along here I like that he has type like these typographic chunks we could do something about that so honestly like we go to if we just go spacetime Wikipedia it's probably a whole bunch of cool stuff Oh spacetime is one word or you know just gonna take this copy it we're gonna make a text box paste it nine will give a 10 wedding here no tracking medium is too heavy we're gonna do regular and we're gonna go like this what I meant what I want to do is make it the same width as I'm standing I think that might be kind of interesting cool I don't want it to be right there well it's actually not so bad it's it's not it's not amazing it's a little too expected but I just thought ooh now we're talking okay some overlap happen in here we're starting to connect the composition the ways saying that I like this piece at the end as a punctuation it's good if it connects this shape here connects to the shape up top visually we get the strong linear act or the strong vertical axis so I think this is going to look cool I think we can introduce more pieces like this and I think I mean if I'm feeling late particularly lazy I can use the same type in a couple different places so I want this kind of like that that's cool I think that's fine as a texture texture item all right so now we're kind of getting to the point where I I really don't want to overdo it it's starting to get there's a lot happening right here and I don't want to take away from the main like typography so what I add has to be incredibly intentional from this point on what I like to do is I like to sign the posters that typically happens in like smaller ancillary typography something like this and what I will do a lot of times I'll use these little pieces to emphasize an axis or a strong grid line here in this case obviously we have a really strong one here we also have a strong horizontal one going across I think this is a little big for type size I'm going to move this down to five with six lighting that feels good I'm really pushing the contrast on that sometimes what I've noticed if you make text super small it makes the poster feel a lot larger when you're working through the Instagram medium everything kind of looks the same so if you really really push your contrast sometimes it can make things feel like bigger than they are because in reality of that type size would have to bet it has to be a larger point size sorry people with people's minds kind of feel like people it's perceived as being larger I guess close number this is day 362 and it is December 28th 2019 this is kind of small but I'm actually going to put the larger or the longer line at the top I think that looks a little nicer cool I don't I don't know if it's done yet I want to add texture still when I want to start bringing in some paper and some grit as well but I am liking where this is at not super loving how these things line up I don't really want to break the strong axis but I might just do it here mm see I didn't love the way that these line up I think this the way those touch is not comfortable remember when the N was touching down here on this line so I want things to cross just just enough so it's obvious I forgive it that's called there is a term for that when like things get really close to the edge and they touch this is probably technically one but I'm not going to worry about it there although now it's probably going to really bother me if I don't fix it no I'm not gonna worry about it so okay so I think this I like the way this looks better but I don't like the way that nothing else really breaks out to the left or right of this central line here so I think if I if I want I can actually just do it again and maybe that will make it feel like it's not such an odd duck like it doesn't stand out so much and plus I like I like using I like having more instances of smaller typography throw here the problem is as stupid as it is like I don't know what to write here I can put typographic poster explorations I don't know that might be stupid but and medium print poster title stranded in time okay let's go I think I like those little details they start they just like absorb the quality you know I think a lot of people post things on Instagram they think of it as like a quick one-off you can just you could just put like six words on a page and go grab a color palette and be done with it but I think there's there can be a lot of care given to these smaller details that make things feel like they're more than the sum of all their parts there's a little more care and intentionality put into these and I am kind of a weirdo like when I scroll through Instagram I'm I'm zooming in on stuff like I want to see the details I don't know if everybody else does but I think when I'm looking at stuff like this I want to be able to zoom in and read everything I want every word to be spelled I want I want everything to line up properly when I'm looking at it like like this oh my god this took me so long because I'm considering exact all the spacing between everything and I think that's what gets lost and a lot of people's work on Instagram specifically if I was doing this on Instagram if I was doing this for a client or whatever it doesn't matter there's so much care that can be given to all these little details that I think it lost along the way for many people so with all that said I'm liking the way this looks a lot right now what I want to start to do is introduce more texture I am going to blur out my screen when I'm browsing my files to see you guys I don't want people peering into my files systems and stuff like that but I'm just gonna grab some paper texture that I really like if you're watching this there's a good chance you saw my future interview with Chris doe or I just people are always like where do I get my textures you know honestly I don't have a specific answer for that you kind of got to do the work yourself there go out and find what works for you things that you like I like this paper analog stuff some people like more digital esque things it's just kind of whatever works for you so alright we're back in here now we got we got some paper texture happening in the back really like in that I think that looks super cool this kind of looks maybe more like a found object or there's some age to it I like the fact that this graphic is slightly blurry it's there's some imperfection happening there what I'm gonna do now is that so that paper texture serves as the background but if you look that's behind all this black text and this black text doesn't feel super natural on top of it because it loses that paper texture so what I'm going to do is I'm going to introduce some texture over all the blacks in this so I'm gonna go back into my my my extensive texture folder here and I'm gonna grab kind of like a like a black paper ink top image like this one here I'm gonna put it over everything I'm gonna set the blend mode to screen so only affect the black in the image and not the white so now that's kind of cool right we get some I think it's maybe a little overdone I think that's nice we're gonna choose a different image because I didn't really like the way that that one turned out I do have some I have this like nice just a really nice texture here that I like throw that on and this isn't exactly what it wants if I said this to screen although it's terrible all the blacks turn to beige so I'm going to open the Camera Raw filter again turn off down all the saturation bring down the exposure so we're like right here and then bring up the whites I just want some of this white to come out so we start to see that like stippling and texture that's good that starts to feel nice in here it just it breaks up the flatness that like full rich black has so I think I really like the way this is turned out I don't think it needs anything more I think what happens with people is they tend to over design or over over compose things the art is not always in figuring out what to add but when to stop adding so in this case I think I'm pretty content with it the way this looks I like that we have a strong focal point up here but you can't the pieces connect it in a page the whole composition in the page is activated by having some punctuate or e word down at the bottom like this we're able to follow the lungs along this strong axis at the top or like vertical axis and we have other smaller pieces typographic pieces that support this vertical axis yeah great I'm gonna I'm not going to touch this anymore I'm not going to do anything this will be my 360 second post for 2019 so hopefully enjoyed this thanks for watching guys and I hope you learned something peace
