last week we tore down a 454 big block chevrolet that was on the cusp of breaking my engine stand and it had some awesome carnage so i figured i'd try to continue that trend of large engines with massive damage and we're going to take apart a blown-up 6-7 cummins and i i know there's some of you that have been watching this channel for quite some time where i said the next diesel i tear down will be a power stroke and i'm sorry it is buried here at the shop and also the 7-3 power stroke core that i have might not be a core it could be a good engine i'd hate to take a good one apart i am looking for i'm avidly looking for a 6 0 or 6 4 blown up complete power stroke for this channel i'm going to get one believe me but for now we're gonna take apart this six seven cummins which has been kicking around the shot for several months another very big reason i'm doing this engine aside from the fact that this takes up a lot of space is the fact that this is loaded with good parts to sell some of these engines the cores i get in there's not a lot to them i get a few really good parts pay for the engine and then hopefully i get some money from the views whereas this engine if this video is terrible which you could you got a lot of good parts to sell it's pretty much completely loaded it looks like it's missing an egr valve and a harness that's it otherwise it's complete this particular 67 is out of a 2011 to 2012 dodge ram 2500 or 3500 there are differences throughout the years and i don't know them at all but i looked up the interchange on this engine it actually says it makes 305 horsepower at 2900 rpm and uh yeah that's what it says on it i have no idea how much torque this makes these make a ton of torque they've run really good although a lot of people are not big fans of the emissions equipment i have no idea if that led to this engine's demise but i'll give you a little hint as to what's wrong with this engine if you look at this side of the block it looks like it's getting ready to hatch the other side well that's the bad side so there seems to be something missing i just i just can't put my finger on it i just what happened here well we know what happened here but let's see how bad the damage is let's get this thing torn down the first thing we're going to do is start removing the emissions equipment with the egr cooler and this pipe and then we'll start to get the turbo exhaust manifold off and it'll just fall apart after that apparently that was lose already what now we'll remove the oil feed line from the oil filter housing now on the coolant lines that's really stiff nope don't say it and we're going to crack that fitting loose now we'll get the oil returned all right and all we've got is the coolant the other coolant line and then the exhaust manifold time to pull the turbo okay that's gonna be heavy yep heavy is the right word let's check out this turbo i think it's been off before because there's two different types of nuts holding the turbo to the manifold it's got this is a lock nut and that is not someone's been wrenching and plus this actuator looks pretty new compared to the rest of this see if we can find a date on this 12 10 2018. so yes it's got a four year old actuator on it not even three and a half i can't math tonight anyway the turbo is really dirty but has just i'd say normal amount of play the wheel does not hit the housing which is the most important part no in and out play which is what you want i'm saying sometimes you want in and out play all right we're not gonna talk about that we're talking about turbos here i think this one's okay now onto the other side we're gonna remove this plenum and this actuator this is not a throttle body and we'll get this out of the way we'll start pulling the fuel rail out once we get the fuel rail out of the way we'll get the valve cover off and we'll get to see what's going on inside there we are look at the amount of soot in there this is like a warm-up plate here it's pretty dirty i'm sure they can get much worse than this though now for all of the fuel lines that last fuel rail is off now we'll start on the valve cover oh yeah this is a ccv component and it is a butler brand that just kind of sits there now we can get to the valve cover bolts well i don't see anything too horrendous yet i mean it's certainly not oh oh that's that's a problem what there's there's no push rod it's just gone next we got to pull the valve cover gasket which also has this harness for the injectors built in and be careful with the tops of the injectors not going to use the impact on them because i don't want to break the injectors so is there more does this come off just like that i can't remember yes that's what i thought this all seems okay towards the front of the engine obviously the user installed inspection port is towards the back that's fine and then you get to this cylinder and and there's just no push right here how do how do you delete a push rod i haven't had that yet so that'll be interesting let's get this valve train apart those all seem to be about the same tightness so i don't think anyone pulled this apart to get a push rod out that doesn't make any sense and this one's just i don't know what's down there it doesn't really sit any ideas well we'll find out these crack oh that one's already loose something worth mentioning here it looks like half of the injector bolts are loose except for the number five number five is tight but if you also look that injector is a lot cleaner than the rest of them is that suspect we'll find out now let's get the injectors out see if blue can pop these things up now i have launched these things into outer space so we're going to try to not do that that one's very stuck let's let's pass that one and that one two well we got two out so far it seems blue is not the right tool for this see if we can keep this trend up we're halfway there i have a little bit bigger of a bar come on i'm flexing the end of that bar let me see if i have a something a little bit bigger i don't know if that's gonna work i feel like this might be a little on the excessive side i don't know [Music] i think the end of it's not sharp enough to bite well i'm out of ideas try this it might just have to come off with the head i don't i've never had one that's stuck now i'm going to crack the head bolts loose and i get a lot of questions as to why i use a breaker bar to crack the head bowls loose and then use an impact the main reason i do this is because i like to have a feeling for how tight these bolts are if there's too much tension or not enough tension it gives me clues as to what might be wrong with the engine and i can't really feel that when i just zip it loose with an impact so we're going to crack these loose and then we'll zip them loose with an impact all right now that the heads loose we're gonna get this head off now i've been hitting the gym pretty hard these days so i don't think this is gonna be too much of a problem [Music] oh man it's heavy oh it's heavy and so heavy these are all connecting rods yep they're all connecting rods actually this doesn't look right something something's wrong here these are okay this is this is not okay cylinder one looks pretty okay looks good there's some fuel in there cylinder two looks okay three looks okay and then when you get to four you're like oh there's an imprint of the cylinder head on it well the only way that happens is if someone put a longer rod in it which well we're not going to talk about that but it's unlikely that happened and then you get to still under five and why wait no wait yeah that uh that piston has rotated so it hit the cylinder head and then it rotated and then that one also hit the cylinder head that's pretty far down the bore i don't think they're supposed to go that far down this will be fun you can clearly see that the rear cylinders had contact with the pistons whereas these don't and you can really tell on this cylinder just because of where the carbon is cleaned off of the flat part of the cylinder head maybe not this cylinder but four and five for sure especially e5 now we're gonna get this housing and bracket off that was unnecessarily stuck now we'll get the oil filter housing out next we'll get this pulley off and this bracket while we're here we'll get the water pump out of the way and i finally need the hammer is that plastic no they wouldn't do that i don't think that's plastic now we'll get the crank pulley off that's heavy see how heavy this is that crank pulley is 29 pounds now we can get the timing cover off no i didn't have to take that off that was just silly okay we're getting somewhere there we go here's your cam here's your oil pump and there's the injection pump here's a crankshaft this has definitely been resealed there's some rtv on this i don't think it'll hurt anything we do have to get that off so we'll do that first so we can get that pump out and i've heard of people being able to hit these and get the gear off we're still going to use a puller on it i don't really want to mess anything up it's a pretty expensive part let's get the bolts off the back of it first i guess i don't know we'll get the gear off let's get these off so that way this pump can come out we're actually going to try this without a puller i've always used a puller i might regret this we're just going to do this couple i don't really want to mess this up at all it seems to be working i don't know what i'm doing here let's try a block of wood and a bigger hammer [Music] oh it just worked i'm gonna have to remember that one no puller needed and the pump's off next we'll pull the oil pump well i don't see any silvery sparkles in the oil this is like a grown-ups fidget spinner i actually have one of these on my counter and i think it's the most played with thing while people are waiting for parts it looks alright well someone has clearly had this off before because it only has two bolts left in it that just comes off too just like that uh oh um there's a part of a cam missing and there's a push rod can we get it out of there there we are and push right looks okay but so i guess the cam just walked away i don't understand what happened here but i bet we'll have more understanding when we get this engine on its side okay now what what have i done here oh i've got an idea let's just put this back leverage yes that wasn't too bad yes and oh my god it's bad huh oh oh oh oh wow yeah i wish i had the rest of this well here's the good part and it gets progressively worse and deleted unfortunately i didn't get this engine with a pan or its contents sometimes that happens sometimes people pull pans to get engines to rotate over so they can get the torque converter off sometimes the place i buy engines from they just pull stuff apart and then i get it incomplete i i can't really complain this happens often though so don't be too alarmed that someone else robbed all the good stuff there's still some good stuff there's kind of a piston up there and then there's a broken very very broken camshaft and then a very chewed up crank wow that's impressive look what it did all around well let's start getting this thing apart now we have a little what is this looks like a bucket here won't come out yeah well without a cam holding this up there's really nothing to keep that oh that's locked up in there this is gonna be fun question is can we rotate this crank over can we i think we should get what we can out and then we'll try as you can see the discoloration the heat treatment on these and then kind of a normal color on the front three uh-oh that bearing spun not surprised at all and there you can see the spun bearing on number four yeah number three wasn't terrible but four and then there's always five now unfortunately because of the position of the rods i don't know if i'm going to be able to get them out maybe the next thing i'm going to try is i put two bolts into the flywheel holes and i'm going to use my moderately sized pry bar to try to rotate it this is going to bend those bolts or flip the engine off this yeah no that's that's that's a big fat not going to happen i guess we're going to loosen the mains let's get the mains off maybe that'll take some tension off of this i have my doubts mains are not looking so hot but we didn't expect them too let's get my little pry bar ah [Music] well there's two more the rod bolt is bent a little bit that is the coolest thing and here i go thinking all the cool stuff was gone already oh that was fine that one is very spun as well and that one is not great but i can get these out maybe [Music] i really just want to get them to the top of the bore i can knock them out once the crank is out of the way if i can get them to the top of the bore then the crank should move a little bit easier should being the operative word here this is very stuck wow watch it split that bearing watch this bearing slide over this journal here also watch me drop this dump this engine [Music] oh there's one bearing where did the other one go oh it's it's it's the rod the other one is the rod okay how do i get this out okay well now it's time to see if we can turn this crank over some more to get the other one oh that sounded great no maybe not maybe the other way here don't worry it's fine see it's fine perfect last one will be no trouble straight here see this one too part of the bearing is the rod i guess it's just fused as i was turning this over it's fine see if we can get it off of there perfect i'd like to note that i have one rod and piston out right now that's it i think the first one we're going to tackle is number six for some reason today i just feel like going back to front we're crowning here oh there's a ring a semi ring anyway oh there's the other side of that ring it's usually what happens when these pistons go that far up in the bore usually breaks the top compression ring now let's do number five oops huh i sure would have liked to have the rest of this somehow this one did not break a ring i'm impressed now number four whoa there so close there we are just two more that was a little work to get that out there's the bearing for number two it has spun and i'm gonna have to knock it off the crank might be all one piece now not sure just gonna give it a little taps here ah she'll come right off let's start at the front of this engine here's piston and rod number one bearings somewhere not awful piston looks okay rod looks okay then let's go to number two same kind of deal here for the piston the rod looks all right bearings were spun about 90 degrees those are chewed up pretty bad that in itself is enough to make a bunch of racket cause a little oil pressure light and then we get to number three number three has some vertical scratches on the skirt but nothing too obnoxious yet a little more widespread damage on the bearing but again not spun not too bad and then there's four now the piston has clearly made contact with the cylinder head there's an outline of the valves and look at the bearing it's welded to it that is so awesome look at the heat it heat treated that rod and here's the cap and that bearing and yes i sprayed these off this is what they look like after you spray them off and then there's the bluetooth rod wait nope that's just not a ghost rod for number five there's what's left of the piston somehow the top compression ring didn't break it clearly made contact hard with the cylinder head and it actually rotated in the bore and then you can see marks from debris and then also me hitting it out with a punch and then number six also struck the cylinder head broke the top compression ring which is right there bearing also very welded to the rod but that's not even the cool part this is the cool part that's one of the rod cap bolts it stretched it i didn't break i'm so impressed that this didn't break this unthreaded it's just pretty strong metal to not break in that situation we are not done i still have to pull the cam and the crank out and to do that i'm going to turn the crank over to where i have access to the cam plate bolts and the cam should just slide right out then we can get this front cover off and the crank will just come right out because all the bolts are out of it at this point perfect oh okay i did not expect that here we go so it broke the cam plate i've never seen that before [Music] and there's the busted off end of the cam so broke a cam plate and the end of that game is worn from beating on whatever the rest of that cam looked like i wish i had it i wish i got this complete is this what they call a three-quarter race cam all right let's zip some tens out sure seems like it [Music] lots and lots of rtv lots of rtv now i'm going to try something that's likely not a good idea and i promise you it hasn't been the first and it won't be the last this will come out right just just let go just just out we're just going to kind of leave that there then we're going to take a much smaller bar yes perfect i planned that i knew that was going to happen 39 000 cans of brake clean later we can kind of see the crankshaft and this took a few hits that journal is smoked as you can see that one's kind of clogged this is rough really rough we certainly have seen the hole on the other side of the block but this is where the block took one hard hit you can see it's kind of cracked around there but there's a surprise here because if you look through here oh look part of a cam and if you look through here another part of a cam one part two parts let's see if we can get that out of there i'm sure it'll just it'll just come right out right well i there's a that's cool and yeah well that was easy that's amazing where'd the rest of it go they must have been in the pan so i kind of cleaned up these cam mcnuggets yes and these are pretty neat these are definitely going on the counter that is probably i don't know if that's cooler than the stretch bolt it's pretty close just imagine the sound that engine made when it let go i don't think i'd want to be anywhere near it sure i'd love to watch a video of it perhaps but to be present nah i'll pass this was someone's really bad day these engines are really expensive i don't care what kind of diesel truck you have all these diesel trucks have expensive engines so i'd hate to have to foot that bill i wish i knew what happened to this engine but i don't really have a lot of diesel experience i've worked on thousands of gas vehicles but diesels not so many and there's plenty of diesel techs that watch this channel so what do you guys think what happened here was it started of oil was it over revved was it a faulty injector was it bad tune was it overheated was it hydrolocked i i don't think it's hydrologic i think it was hydraulic but anyway i don't have a lot of confidence in giving you a good synopsis of what happened here and i struggled to to do another cummins engine before a power stroke i wanted to do a power stroke however the power stroke i have is not going to be that exciting it is a 7 3 but it does run it is a good engine maybe i don't want to kill a good engine it just had kind of sparkly oil and okay it's probably not a good engine but it's also not a catastrophically failed engine and that seems to be the videos that people love to watch and that's what i want to have on the channel taking apart an engine with fried rings might be interesting taking apart an engine that tossed a rod and broke a cam into three pieces four pieces plus now that's cool so that's the kind of videos that i'm gonna have from here on out i will do a power stroke at some point hopefully i can get my hands on a six liter or six four those seem to have problems for some reason i think this week you guys are gonna get a bonus tear down what will it be you guys are gonna have to wait and see if you'd like to buy parts off of this engine or any of the other engines i've torn down or even this 96 land cruiser it's a big pile of crap send me an email i'm gonna leave our email in the video description and as always i love all the comments all the feedback and even the criticism i love it all and i'll catch you on the next one
