hey everyone this is steven stron at cast iron cookware where you can find information to help you better collect restore and use cast iron cookware today we're going to be looking at the potential of using a dc power supply as a replacement of a manual battery charger for a electrolysis tank and we're going to be doing that coming right up before we get started i just want to say thank you again to everyone that has chosen to purchase my product easy bz cast iron seasoning the purchase of this product helps keep this channel going and i just want to say again thank you so very much so let's get on into the video if you restore cast iron cookware and especially if you use an electrolysis tank or plan to use one you have realized that manual battery charges are pretty much a thing of the past i have emailed several of the manufacturers and the answer that i get from each one of them is the same every time we do not plan to manufacture manual battery chargers anymore an automatic battery charger will not work for electrolysis because it will detect the fault and shut down so i've been looking at alternatives and i got a good friend on facebook stephen harrell he has actually started using a dc power supply pretty much just like this one now this one here you can get them at 5 amps and 10 amps and i think this will do 5 or 10 amps i haven't seen anything go any higher than 10 amps there may be something out there that's 15 and 20 ounce but i have not seen it and if you have please comment and let me know where you find one but even five amps will do it i've known a few people with battery chargers who run them on two and a half amps and it works it just takes a little more time but this is a nice little lightweight unit it came in the mail and it fit in my mailbox this one right here i think i paid 69 for it on amazon and they have these little bitty clips now in our facebook post stephen harrell said that these will burn into fairly quickly because they're not made to continually have that much energy running through them like for 24 hours at a time because a lot of times you'll run an electrolysis tank overnight so i went ahead and purchased a little more heavy duty unit i got one open right here and it has these uh banana clips where they plug in of course you have the little alligator clips i guess you call it on one side and i went ahead and got one that's made a little more unique i got one that has the little extra plug so you can double them up and then you have twice the capacity now i believe some of the guys out there will just go ahead and buy the banana clips and use 12 gauge or even 10 gauge house wire and use that and you can do that these little plugins they actually will screw out and you can wrap a wire around that and then tighten down on it or even put one of those little y clamps on there on your your wiring and stick it on there and tighten it down on that i can't remember the gauge but i'll leave a link to it if these work great i'll leave a link to these but they're heavier gauge than the ones that came with the dc power supply of course you can also double it if you plug in the banana clips in the back of the other one so i'm excited to see how it works because we are in desperate need of a replacement for the manual battery charger this video is not particularly about setting up an electrolysis tank it's more than anything about the power supply so i've already got my tank set up we're gonna go out to my shop we're gonna hook this thing up and put a skillet in there and just see how it does and let's go check it out okay i'm out here my shop and i've got this number 14 century series skillet and it's really rusty and a little bit gunky i'm sure this one's going to come out a little bit pitted but i figured this would be a good one to try since this big piece here so we'll give it a good washing and we'll stick it in our electrolysis tank and see how it does just in case you haven't seen it before i have a stainless steel electrolysis tank you can use a plastic tank with rebar as the sacrificial anode but this uh stainless steel works great it cleans really easy all i got to do is go in there with a little scrubby and to kind of hit the walls and i'm good to go again pull it right here in here is our star of the day there's one and here's two okay we've got our little banana clips connected we're going to take our hot lead or positive and we're going to clip it on the side of our tank and i'm probably going to go ahead and go directly to my cast iron and then we'll switch it on i'm just going to turn everything wide open we're currently running at 9.95 amps at 5.9 volts we'll see how that does we'll see how warm these leads get and like i said earlier we can always double up and put these extra banana clips inside these hearing that way we won't have the resistance so we're going to let this run a while and just see how it does so we know it's not going to have as much activity as say a 40 amp battery charger like the one i have been using but i know it's got some activity because we see the numbers on the digital readout so we're just going to let it run and we're going to come back later and take a look at it and just see how well it's working so we'll see a little bit okay we're back out in my shop and we're going to take a look and see what kind of progress we've made uh it's running pretty good and uh i'm not getting any heat in the cable so evidently this gauge is working just fine we're seeing a little more activity see if i can zoom in on this we're actually seeing the activity inside the tank at first i was a little bit uh apprehensious about it working but i'm seeing it work so we're gonna pull this piece out let me back the camera up we're gonna shut it down let's cut our machine off take our leads off now usually when i was using my 40 amp battery charger i was getting a lot of heat now the water is still kind of warm [Music] we see some of it coming coming loose now tell you what let's take this over here to the sink and give it a little bit of a scrubbing and it's looking like my original thoughts of it being a century series was wrong i believe we have a red mountain series of course it is got some really bad pitting but we're going to go ahead and stick this in there for another day the thing about the low voltage it will take longer but we're making progress so far this thing has ran for about 15 hours we're going to go ahead and check on it again tomorrow give it up give it another 24 hours we're not seeing any heat so it's not going to be a problem i think we're going to be just fine because this piece was in such exceptionally bad condition it's going to take a little bit longer but we're making progress and the only labor i put into it is a little bit of scrubbing in the sink that's the beauty of electrolysis all the work is done while you just set it and forget it so we'll check it out tomorrow and just see how well it's doing we may even take another piece that doesn't have as harsh of issues and try it too just to see what the differences are now this was a really bad piece let's check it out again tomorrow and see what kind of progress we've made so see you again tomorrow i went ahead and let this thing run from the last time we shot this video it's been 24 hours so this thing has been running a day and a half pretty much wide open and let's take a look at it we're not having any heat this thing still is cool as a cucumber my leads though they're not exactly what you'd call cold they're not warm either they're doing great we also have some good action going on inside our electrolysis tank as you see we have some bubbles going so we're going to go ahead and cut this thing off and take a look at our pan okay now this piece right here it has a lot of staining i've got all the old seasoning off but i'm telling you what it looks really bad it's pitted i mean it's got some pits that a bb would fit in some places where we've lost a lot of iron from rust now that number 14 is a pretty large piece that i put in there and there was a lot of good action when it come to the electrolysis but i've got another little piece and it's a birmingham stove and range 3s from the red mountain series and it needs to be stripped it's got a pretty decent seasoning on it but i got this used and i never have stripped it and i'm going to go ahead and stick it in there it's a smaller piece and we're just going to see the difference of the action when it comes to a smaller piece versus a larger one now i'm telling you that larger piece it probably could go another day because it was rough i'm telling you really bad so let's just see how this one turns out we're going to take our positive lead and we're just going to put it right here on the front and we're going to go ahead and hook this right on the end of our handle taking a look at our little number three we're gonna go ahead and cut it on right away we're getting some action most of the action is right here around the lead [Applause] i'm gonna let this thing run but i'm not gonna let it run all day and all night and all day again like i did that big 14 and tomorrow we'll take a look at it i believe it being smaller there's less surface area i believe it's going to pretty much strip it within that 24 hour period so let's check it out tomorrow okay we're back out in my shop it's been about 24 hours since i last left the video and this machine has ran non-stop the whole time so we're going to take a closer look at it temperature wise no change whatsoever still cool as a cucumber we have this nice little fan in the back and it's really pushing the air through this unit we do not have any temperature at all on the plug-in now the leads go into the tank finally have a little bit of warmth to them they're not hot now if they have ran 24 hours and they're not hot then that's a indication that they're not going to get any hotter than what they are now let's take a little closer look at our pan it needs washing but it's pretty much fully stripped but we are getting a lot of action more so now that the seasoning layer has pretty much disappeared so we have some real bubbling going on so there is a lot of action there really surprised at the 10 amps it's a 10 out of unit but we're running 9.97 amps we're going to go ahead and get this cleaned up really well with soap and water and go ahead and carry them into my studio where we have good lighting get a good closer look at them then i'll recap what i think about the validity of using a dc power supply in place of a manual battery charger so we'll see you back in the studio okay we've finished up testing of our dc power supply and i'm really excited about how well it's worked out not just that the little cables that i purchased to be in addition instead of using the ones that came with it never did really get warm they ran 24 hours a day for about three days and didn't ever get hot at all just lightly warm in all everything worked out great so let's take a look at our little number three right here my little number three s birmingham stove and range it cleaned it up really good and it being a smaller piece it had more activity because the surface area was much smaller and it cleaned up a lot quicker on the other hand our big number 14 birmingham stove and range red mountain skillet had much more of a surface area and it kind of went a little bit slower so i figure in comparison between the number three and the number 14 the number three i would say about eight hours it was clean uh but this 14 i would say 48 hours before we got clean and it looks pretty good even though it is terribly terribly pitted and uh it's probably set in water out in the weather or there's no telling where it's been if we only knew the history and it's really suffered a lot but this belongs to a co-worker and they're probably going to use it for camping and it'll be a great camping skillet i'm really excited about the alternative power supply versus a manual battery charger because they are getting very very hard to find my take from this is yes the dc power supply is definitely a great alternative to a manual battery charger so i hope that you've enjoyed this video and got something out of it and if you have please don't forget to subscribe hit the notification bell and i promise i'll keep more of them coming you can also follow cast on cookware on facebook instagram and twitter you can also sign up to receive emails from cast iron cookware i put one out about every month or so check out the cast iron cookware facebook group and i just want to say thank you again for watching cast iron cookware before you go i just want to share something with you really quickly in psalms chapter 40 verse 1-3 it says i waited patiently for the lord and he inclined unto me and heard my cry he brought me up also out of an horrible pit out of the mary clay and set my feet upon iraq and established my goings and he hath put a new song in my mouth and prays unto our god many shall see it and fear and shall trust in the lord i just want to say share the word and be a blessing [Music]
