[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] good morning everyone and welcome back to the channel we are here one day I actually think it's seven but I have lost count let's say day seven day seven of our April 2008 teen trip to Japan yeah we're here in tobu Nikko station we're in Nikko today Nikko is a very famous place in Japan incredibly famous there's a very very elaborate shrine here it's a shrine dedicated to talk our ears to the man who is credited with uniting all of Japan everywhere you go in Japan to any historical site they will always have a reference to talk ago it used to especially if you visit it's Carl sores you've seen his name everywhere he's credited for uniting all of Japan over him what time was it 1,600 1,500 1,600 1,600 1,500 opport is that for the dates down below anyway this is enshrined it's also his mausoleum so he's over there his grandson shrine is here too there's a beautiful gorge here this it's also very very close to a lovely lake which sits at the bottom of the mountains I'm gonna go prop and see that too I'm actually standing outside the Nikko tourism informations area information point in there you can buy special bus tickets which you can take to tour around Nikko if you're only going to see the shrines you can get the pasta kit for 500 yen if you're going to see the shrines and the lake you can get a two-day bus ticket for 2,000 yen you cannot buy a one-day bus ticket to visit the lake and the shrines it's worth it anyway the one-way trip up to the lake is over a thousand yen so to get there and back it's gonna cost you so if you're gonna go to the lake you might still get the two-day bus ticket we've come to take a look at shinky old bridge this bridge has been standing here since 1636 but there's been a bridge in this spot for a lot longer it marks the entrances to the main shrines which I believe are up those two hurts to the right there it's a beautiful bridge you have to pay an inch is for you to walk over it so we are gonna skip here because the main thing is to come and go and take a picture but you can pay a small entrance for you to walk over it if you wish it seems like they have some good maps today we are heading up to toshogu shrine yeah cool let's get that done and over with and before all the crowds get it's so much quieter than I remembered it it was like last time I came here it was like Disneyland at 11 o'clock on a Saturday it was it's very very busy I think a lot of people day trip this place from Tokyo because it's so easy to do as day trip so I reckon around 11 o'clock you'll get really busy so we get this shrine done quickly it'll be good the dragon I forgot about him this is such an awesome dragon I think you have a picture of him on my Flickr we're now on the big path walking up to the shrine over there here we go this is the gate here we cannot walk up the gate or through the gate though so we're gonna have to go round I love this pagoda this is amazing it has earthquake defense and it's really cool so there it is how'd you go pretty far back to get it all in short the gate on the left go to on the right hand side amazing don't see many five-story pagoda in Japan actually very few that little hot there is where you buy tickets to go around it's 300 yen to walk around and see other pagoda or you could just take pictures of it from the outside liam is picking us tickets up for the shrine and we're about to go up those stairs into the shrine ZM how much of the ticket one thousand three hundred eighty one thousand three hundred each quite expensive but this is kind of a special place so I guess that's why and they are a little price out all right let's head in and have a look around oh my gosh I forgot how impressive this place was is we're standing outside the three storehouses these are storehouses you see as soon as you venture into the main shrine one of the cool things here is there's a lot of carvings around this whole shrine this one of these storehouses carvings of elephants show you it over here and apparently the theory is that the person who did the Karthik's has never actually seen elephants before which makes sense because elements aren't native to Japan so it is thought that he just copied them from paintings he had seen which is quite good another one of the famous storehouses monkey carvings on it that one there is the famous hear no evil speak no evil see no evil monkeys especially collection of monkey carvings on here but that one is the most famous [Music] the two major religions of Japan Buddhism and Shinto are delicately intertwined in this shrine and it seems that for a very very long time that was the case up until the Meiji period which I believe started around 1850 the two religions would largely be intertwined for our loads and loads of shrine buildings but then during the Meiji period they started to separate them so that purely Buddhist shrines take out all the Shinto stuff then the Shinto shrines would take out all of the Buddhist stuff but it was so intertwined in this shrine that they largely kept it so this is one of the only shrines that exists now that have both religions exhibited quite cleanly within Earth [Music] [Music] that gay is said to be the most ornate an important gate in all of Japan which is kind of amazing pretty amazing um it's actually really quite cool there's some beautiful statues in there also apparently the pillars around the outside you can see these white pillars shooting up here one of them is apparently upside down and the reason why it's upside down is because then the gate can be considered to be not complete and that completion brings bad luck apparently so it being completed bring lands like that brings bad luck so the fact the one is upside down and means that it's not complete so there is no bad Rock about to go up to the mausoleum this isn't the entrance here and this actually has is one of one of two Shogo shrines most famous carving I think the carving of the sleeping cats he actually has supposed surrounding it and it's supposed to is supposed to envision the idea that Tokugawa Ieyasu had of creating unity in Japan by showcasing the strong and the weak together within one carving and it guards the entrance off into the mausoleum these days quite a lot huh two hundred seven stairs oh my god it's like an under London Underground station each of the steps call from single block of stone Wow awesome all right let's go so here we go Tokyo Tower is his grave he's buried underneath the pagoda on the right there's actually a really beautiful place and took a go he is who picked Niko himself look at this backdrop or a nice place to spend eternity right [Music] that was absolutely amazing oh my gosh we just went into this hall over here it was cool I did not mean I had no idea what was in there you go into this wall you line up and then they lead you into sort of the main I guess it's the main shrine area right inside of there there is a dragon painted on the ceiling they call it the roaring dragon apparently some people think it's cool the crying dragon I was actually called the glory and dragon and it's called the roaring dragon because if they strike the two blocks together that make that kind of very distinctive noise what do you call those two blocks I don't know if it's a clap so yeah it's like a clapping sound they do it with the two blocks you see them over here them often in the temples and when they clap those two blocks together underneath the dragon the whole place echoes it's like a it's almost like a bell like sound and echo bell-like sound if he moves away from the dragon's face so like on away from being underneath the Dragons place strikes them again you don't hear anything but you hear the clap of the the two things striking each other but you don't hear any echo at all it's so weird you get literally step two steps away from where the dragon's face is we can hear that that sounds um you don't hear the echo but if he if he claps them underneath the dragon you hear this like EE is like a roaring echo unbelievable I couldn't quite work it out oh it's amazing it was so good [Music] the sacred tree of matchmaking oh it's cute well it's cute for a very big tree my god [Music] we left to show go shrine and then we walk through the toilet Sam's shrine which is right next to it and came here which is tire um byung-tae you in is the post oh I always just say posthumous first humans is a hard word say it's the posthumous name for the third shogun tokugawa EA Sue's grandson omitsu I love this shrine I love it so much it's it's also a mix of Buddhist and Shinto it's still very elaborate there's still a lot of goldleaf but is more modest than takayasu's by design apparently the grandson respected his father his grandfather so much he wanted to have a very elaborate shrine but not as elaborate as his grandeur it is still pretty ornate guide says that this is subtle but this shrine is I'm not really too sure that was achieved that's pretty amazing though we just popped into this building this is a hidin this is where you can make prayers to ear mitts oops pictures aren't allowed obviously so I can take you in but it was lovely we sat down for a little bit and there was one of the guys I was working here don't be calling a monk he was already a monk like a shrine man I'm gonna call him shrine man and and he was talking us through some stuff and then we ordered any prayer together so the hide and where we were just praying is just over there this is the wall outside a gate we popped out over there there's a loom and then the psyllium is up to your right there pretty cool coin that is actually quite modest compared to the rest of the place kind of set him to the into the mountain [Music] favorite keeper multiple which is a water-filled right by where the bus drops you off at lake chuzenji only thing that's about the bustle but you want to get it to come up here at Slate she's ng on them and then from net there's a five-minute walk over to keep in water if it's where we are now I check it out such videos look at that it's a giant waterfall this technically falls there seems to be a few of them man I you can also take an elevator down to go see it from the base which is what we might be now so that's Liam going up the ticket window over here this is the engine see elevator says that I guess I've Kegel multiple on the on the left hand side three complicated can G and then elevator straight afterwards that's amazing oh my gosh what a waterfall I love all those waterfalls underneath there that's amazing let's pan up and come to the lower observation deck get a better view from the water oh yeah love me some of that water he has Hopkinson like cheesington eyes you might be able to see a massive tory gay and you may be able to make a bit of a water over that I tried to do a little bit of videoing outside but it's so India to show you've been able to hear anything a cloud the setting over lady is mg and so we actually can't see the mountain which is up over there we can't see it from from the lake because it's sort of a fog is very very simple but everything we can see the lake though which is amazing we saw that beautiful waterfall over there the key calm water also saw them which is amazing I worried because I've seen this lake with the mountain before so if you want to see that I wasn't looking at that time but I was taking a lot of pictures not reading them to Flickr so I lost my Flickr if you want to see how it looks like we've now stopped in to cafe called cafe talkie-talkie cafe you can't quite remember but it's like they have their own cheesecake yes I'm gonna try some of that and we're also gonna have a quick coffee to warm up as it's so cold up here is actually quite high the elevation we're at is about 1,200 1,300 meters so we're quite fly ups it's very very cold and if you do visit here and it is a nice day one of my best recommendations is to head up that road over there and go to a temple called to a chuzenji tabloid things it's not the best temple open two in the world it's cute but it's no nice it's an OK temple but it has a beautiful view from there of the lake and the mountain in the distance so if you do have to be on base good place we too can see this looks really nice we have taken a bus back down to Nicko to stop number 11 if you come to sort of Nicko area and choose ng area all the bus stops have numbers and so the bus stop we just got off that was passed up number 11 we've come to visit this the imperial villa apparently it also served as the Imperial Palace at some point I wonder if the Imperial Palace was down at one point or something like that but it served as the Imperial Palace it looks as normal that we are going to like we're gonna have to take off our shoes before we go inside saying to Liam before I die be amazed if we didn't have to take off our shoes usually when you go inside any building in Japan you take off your shoes so we're gonna do that now these are the things that you aren't do it looks like pictures are completely okay Liam says Brian our tickets 510 eat Yan each shoes go in here so one of the most amazing things this place is the fact that it combines Western Western architectural with Japanese architecture and yeah let's go in there's a route like any place you visit in like an internal house or temple Japan usually has a route that you'll follow I'm gonna follow the route how cool is this oh my gosh is huge we need to hurry up there is absolutely huge and it was constructed in 1899 actually for either Crown Prince at that time who then became Emperor taisho and yet one time to disrepair during world war ii period and so it's only in the last sort of 20 years they've managed to restore it enough so that people can walk now yeah the billiard-room is starting to remind me of game of Cluedo yes this is a billiard room they've a wash basin in the corner which is very interesting an abacus table over here I guess for counting how many of your games you've won who knows these are the nights where chess that's amazing are they all in the same place it's not very convenient that's so odd their arms look sire Japanese I knew just look at the walls but when you look at the ceilings those light fencing and then you look at the carpet on the floor it looks western so you're interesting that's the other thing which is very Japanese is external corridor so paper folding screens they're the ones I almost put my finger through so I will not be touching them this room is where the Emperor would receive guests I suppose he would sit behind a desk over to the right hand side that room is where people would wait until the Emperor called you in or got somebody else to call you in my god that's the fanciest laboratory I've seen what is that little thing over there is that I'll have it true - okay and what's that man mm-hmm and there's this beautiful window here seems to be very very popular with people to take pictures of thing Kasim lies with you out of that Liam's gonna have a picture of it area I am gonna show you guys exactly what he can see all that is amazing so the lovely room is a worship room but the Imperial for her family would worship their ancestors and look what a backdrop to worship your ancestors - hey this is lovely view Gardens beautiful [Music] [Music] [Music] we have taken an odd detour from the villa to come to see kamongo fuchi abyss which is set into a gorge and is is a long walkway lots of little sort of Buddhist style statues they called g0 and they line up apparently there's a myth to do with them in that every time you count the number of statues I think there's around 70 for that every time you count you miss count haha it's you always get a different number they are often called the yokai g0 orgies or yokai like ghosts go statues because of this kind of weird phenomenon have you always miss counting them here they are lines and lines of Jesus statues oh my gosh they go on because of what I've read about this place and the pictures I've seen it feels a little bit like a graveyard walking through it also I think is a bit overcast today it's just kind of like an eerie light for the middle of a day and the other thing is because the pictures I've seen of this I was almost adamant there was on the other side of the bag I heard that way we actually caused the river to get over here so to show the shrine is like over that way and I would have sworn that this whole abyss like this line of statues was on the other side right we think we reach the end I think we should count them all on the way back in our head and see if we get different numbers yeah let's do it you ready yep I've got 88 I say 87 because I think one of those was the head of the one behind yeah so you're going on a technicality I think it counts 88 isn't I got if you come check it out count them let me know what you get we are gonna make our way back to the station now so it's time for us to say goodbye to Nick oh oh yay there's a too-tight attached to each other so this is the first one lots of sites try and look about [Music] we took the train back from a ji Nikko's station to its Gnomeo which is where we are right now and we just got into a train a bullet train to go back to Tokyo we got on the non reserved seats was all the reserved seats were completely booked out on this train so we just got an enormous everyone's and yeah it's going to take us about 54 minutes to get this awesome anyway once they thank you so much for watching today and we have a pretty epic day in the house you've only met I'm meant to do half a day we ended up spending the whole day there it was really awesome the guy max to take you tonight oh it's Gloria we don't have plans yet I think we're gonna discuss tonight what we're gonna do that but I hope you'll come along with us anyway and yeah that's it so thank you for watching you
