i'm an instructor and lecturer at the wsb university in bosnia poland europe and today i would like to talk about how not just to survive but actually to thrive as an online instructor of high school and university students having said that i need you to know that to thrive you actually need to survive and the past year has been extremely tough for all the teachers instructors and lecturers alike due to the covet pandemic the pandemic was so unexpected and nobody was prepared for what was about to happen so we had to deal with that on the go and this was my way of coping with what was thrown at me this is actually my daughter's room and i had to teach from there you can see i'm surrounded with toys and with her stuff and i was pretty unhappy this is what the situation looked like from my student's perspective to me they were just gray rectangles most of the time there was just maybe one person who would use their photo and maybe one person who would turn on their camera they could see some children stuff behind me and it didn't make this a very successful experience and just when i thought i had it bad i saw a presentation of my colleague from peru in south america it happened during a panel a discussion panel for the university of illinois and he showed me the situation in his country and i have to say this struck me and i felt how fortunate i was when i saw some of his students on just one device no wi-fi no anything so even though this could be some of us at the very beginning of the pandemic or maybe throughout the pandemic like you know looking at our devices and either being frustrated or not knowing how to teach what to do still we should congratulate ourselves because we did it and whatever we did was the best that we could do however if you feel insecure if you feel that online teaching is not for you you're not the only one you're in very good company there was a study of faculty and information technology made in the year 2017 in the usa it was made by educause center for analysis and research and it turned out that only nine percent of faculty preferred to teach in a completely online environment and almost 50 percent believed that online teaching and learning had either no effect or actually it had a negative effect on student learning and 41 of those who preferred to teach in a completely online environment still disagreed that this type of learning helped students learn more effectively that's interesting when the same study was repeated after two years in 2019 still only nine percent of faculty preferred to teach mostly are completely online so this number didn't change and not surprisingly perhaps 92 percent of the teachers the instructors who taught only face to face preferred this approach what is interesting though is that nearly twice as many of those who taught at least one online course in the past year actually preferred to teach mostly or completely face to face so the face-to-face approach was a huge winner if so many educators are actually against teaching online or they don't feel comfortable teaching online and yet we have to do it because we are forced by the circumstances and maybe this kind of teaching will stay with us for a long time how do we try to change that attitude or maybe how do we change that attitude what caitlyn tucker would tell us would be that we should design student-centered lessons and we should prioritize community why should we do this we should because learning at its very core is a social endeavor it's not something that an individual can do by himself or by herself because people learn through their interactions with each other and with the world around them this year i was very lucky to take part in an excellent class offered by the harvard graduate school of education this was the professional development program entitled the online classroom strategies for higher ed teaching and learning and it took place in march 2021 there what was recommended was the community of inquiry framework which was a model for online and blended learning by harrison anderson and archer and within this framework we could see three interconnected presences the teaching presence the cognitive presence and the social presence when the three presences are combined we actually create a community of learners who can make meaning while they interact online with you as their instructor as their facilitator in simple terms the teaching presence is how course materials are designed and organized how instruction is provided and how learning is facilitated i will discuss this in detail very soon the cognitive presence on the other hand is the meaning making presence how varied opportunities for learning are created how feedback is provided and how students are assessed the third important aspect is the social presence and this is exactly something that all of us are missing during online education this is how community and informal social connections are built so a lot of attention needs to be paid here as well how do you actually recreate your regular course to make it a successful online course well as steven covey would say you should begin with the end in mind but also what you should begin is begin creating the three presences with the end in mind the teaching presence the cognitive presence and the social one remember it is not you who is the most important you need to create with the end in mind but also most of all with a student in mind you have to help them succeed so with the end and the student in mind you need to explain to your students what your course is all about what the goals and objectives are why are they learning this at all how is it helping them reach the goals and the objectives how will it be useful in their future life in their future work you need to explain what the purpose of the assignments and activities is how do they build up the skills and the knowledge that your students might need and also they need to be active participants in the learning process you need to have them reflect on the goals objectives assignments and activities it's not just you who needs to understand these things you are not the only one who needs to understand the goals what you're aiming at and which assignments and activities help you achieve the goals your students have to see this as well i don't know how long you've been teaching uh in the regular classroom maybe for a couple of years maybe for one year maybe forever but you may be pretty familiar with what it looks like when you're in the class in the regular brick and mortar institution how about teaching online if you are new to this you may not know that there are actually three forms of this teaching presence online one is synchronous one is asynchronous and one is micronus so the synchronous presence the synchronous teaching presence is interactive it is two way and it happens in real time with a teacher maybe you've used zoom or teams or any other such platform this is synchronous asynchronous is virtual through pre-prepared resources but there is no real-time teacher-led interaction so it makes it quite flexible but also a bit impersonal there is also the bikerness one which may be actually in a way quite satisfactory because it's a combination of the two of the synchronous instruction and of the asynchronous instruction since students just like us are social animals and i've already stressed how important it is to create the social presence you can also be interested in the fact that martin paulie and ritz helped in the year 2020 they actually discovered that when synchronous communication features are integrated with asynchronous features the online course is much more engaging it increases learning outcomes positive attitudes and retention so actually synchronous elements are very important because they make students want to stay they make them want to learn if synchronous instruction is desirable how do you make it effective how do you make your students want to come to your class well first of all you need to make them feel welcome you need to make them feel noticed you should know their names you should also know how they feel and you need to be positive you make you have to make students believe that they can succeed that it's not that they are here to complete a course and that it's difficult they are in very unexpected circumstances they can actually succeed with your help to do it you need to make sure that your students understand the technology and the tools that you're using so it's really worthwhile to sacrifice the time to maybe even sacrifice the whole class to teach them how to use the technology and the tools that they are supposed to use in the future because this will make all of the following education much easier you also should remember that learning is a social endeavor so you should create opportunities for collaboration this can be project based learning this can be group work this can be pair work this can be working in teams working in breakout rooms they should collaborate and you need to be present and engaged you are there for them even though asynchronous instruction may not be all that attractive for your students and it can be even a little bit maybe discouraging you should try to make it effective and to do it first of all please put yourself in your students shoes don't look at your course your asynchronous course is something that you understand because you're the instructor you should see it with your students eyes because your student is the one who is supposed to profit so you should organize your course content well and intuitively when you look at it do you know where everything is do you know where to look for things do you know which assignments are supposed to be done and ideally you should also make this course visually appealing so that the students want to be there want to look at the material want to learn because there is no way to provide clarification to answer students questions in real time for them to ask for you to provide some guidance you need to be as clear and specific as possible and you also need to provide a lot of feedback at all times when there is still time for your students to adjust their approach to correct their work so be very clear be very specific see if your students can understand everything that you want from them if they can understand where to look for things it's also good to personalize your course it's good if you make it unique if it's not generic if your students know that you added something from yourself and there is a temptation that if this is asynchronous you want to give your students as much material as possible don't do it do not overload your students even if you have a lot of material to cover you know we are human beings and apart from just studying apart from being students learners we also have other obligations we also have other tasks we are also community members so in the difficult times of the pandemic when they may get sick or they may take care of a family member just remember even though you need to cover the material do not overload them do not dump as much on them as you can because they will get overwhelmed so the key word here is in online education simplify simplify make it easier remember your students are human beings they get overwhelmed so use intuitive platforms and tools make them as understandable as easy as possible also for the sake of any student not just students with learning difficulties or disabilities try to use or make ideally accessible materials so use captions or transcripts for videos use some alt text for photos or for pictures also if you are planning on some complex tasks you should break them down and you should not assume that your student will be ready in two or three months just break down complex tasks and give deadlines for each step to make learning more manageable for your students and if possible you should release the content especially asynchronous content gradually so for example conditionally if you see that one task is completed release some part of the content and then do it again and again because otherwise your students as i said may get get overwhelmed it may be too much and all the time at all times please support your students with guidance and feedback they are as lost as you are or even more lost than you are so they should feel that you are by their side at all times another keyword for online education is multiple if you feel that the keyword multiple is somehow opposite to the term simplify it's not because by multiple what i mean is that you should too many visuals interactive tools and learning activities well many but not too many this is the way to go and also your students need to feel that they are agents that they are not just passive that they are not dependent on you they need to be independent they need to be accountable for their work so please give your students many choices maybe the same task can be completed in a number of ways maybe it can be presented as a powerpoint presentation maybe it can be written down on paper just give your students many choices if they have access to wi-fi to devices that's fine but you also have to assume that not all of them do and the choices may make their life easier and as i said before please provide frequent and timely feedback your students really need it now more than ever you already know that the cognitive presence is one of the three vital presences in online education this one can actually rely on project-based learning which is an excellent way of making meaning through interactions in groups group meaning making and for this you can actually use certain tools that are listed here tools that facilitate joint research other tools for discussion like your learning management system or google docs or zoom or ms teams for synchronous education group meaning making can also happen through collaborative tasks and these can be performed via google docs or google forms or google slides these are just a couple of examples you can use the tools that you feel comfortable with just remember about group meaning making joint research discussion and collaborative tasks if you decide you can actually focus on the project-based learning to foster recognition you should always explain to your students what you expect remember online students work mostly or only by themselves and they can't ask for clarifications when they see your instructions and sometimes it's quite difficult for them to understand what you mean so be very clear when you explain what you expect also it's quite advisable to use conversational style don't lecture don't talk at the students talk with your students and if possible for asynchronous instruction create short videos because then your students will see your face they will see sort of the gestures the body language and it will be more student friendly you should also provide them with clear rubrics and you should scaffold the tasks you should model the tasks remember this is what your students need they need clear scaffolded activities something that is modeled so you should share examples of best work so that they know what they should be aiming at but also mediocre one so that they know okay this is the difference if i submit something like that i'm going to get a lower grade but i'm still going to pass however if i want to excel this is something that i should be aiming at this is something that i should be trying to achieve now let me talk about the frequently overlooked social presence we tend to teach sometimes we also we are good at like cognitive presence because we want our students to make meaning but how to create social presence online this is really difficult so here are a couple of tips your students should know that you are a real person so you definitely need to introduce yourself you can if this is happening in the synchronous environment it's easy because you're there you can just smile at your students and you can tell them a little bit about yourself so that they feel that you're real but if you are teaching in this asynchronous way you may record a video okay and you can introduce yourself with some personal but not private information such as your hobby or a pet and they also should see you as an invested active partner in the learning community not just you know as a lecturer express um your interest in them at all times they should also be allowed to express their feelings one of the ways to do it is through emojis so for example if your meeting is happening in real time and this is synchronous learning don't forget about emojis in the chat box the way i do it is i sometimes start a class and i say okay so how are you feeling today put your emoji in the chat box and sometimes you know just wonderful things happen after you see how your students feel because you can react to that and you can make them feel respected noticed and liked also in the task sequence for to form a community one student can choose another student using his or her name and it's important that they know their partners their classmates names small groups and pairs in breakout rooms is also a wonderful way to actually create social presence they interact in groups and in pairs but without you present all the time also peer feedback is quite a good opportunity you should or maybe you might use the harvard graduate school of education project zeros ladder of feedback and in this way your students can learn how to be gentle but also how to be effective in providing feedback to their peers you should not forget to collect class or course feedback from your from your students to know what you are doing well and what can still be improved another tricky aspect of online education is assessment we may be used to tests or quizzes and other forms of regular assessment but online education requires a different format if possible tests should be avoided at all costs for quite a long time now instructors lecturers scholars have been arguing that maybe tests are not the best way of evaluating students expertise knowledge skills so one of the alternatives here would be authentic formative assessment and this should be aligned to our learning goals it should also be personally relatable so it should very much relate to real life it should be culturally relevant it should be flexible clear it should be negotiated with the students you're not the only one who actually should be responsible for this assessment your students should have a say also frequent formative assessments should be part of your teaching routine it shouldn't be just one assessment formative assessment is called formative for a reason by constant and gradual assessment you just show your students what they have already achieved and what is still to be achieved also here you can do two things you assess both the content and the content knowledge as well as student engagement some examples of authentic assessment may be the following for education majors for example they can create a lesson plan or they can create a classroom management plan and you evaluate their understanding of the concepts and you evaluate their knowledge on the basis of the lesson plan or the classroom management plan for nursing majors they can evaluate a patient's health or they can create a patient care plan for business majors they can create a report on remote education in the times of the global pandemic for example how about computer science majors they can create a website so using this these tasks and these examples of authentic assessment you can actually see if your students mastered the knowledge and the skills that you wanted them to another way of assessing your students can happen through games and quizzes you know that most teenagers and young people actually love games and love gamification so here you can use quizzes barker hood quizlet tedded or ken academy and in this way through games and quizzes you can see if your students actually achieved the goals and the objectives that were required of them here you can see some recommended reading a lot of it can be accessed online for free and i think that it will be inspiring in many ways but if you were to reach us one professional development article please make it how to be a better online teacher by flower darby this is an excellent and excellent paper on how to improve your skills and how to actually thrive rather than just survive as an online educator i know firsthand how overwhelming online education can be so let me just give you a handful of useful tools not a lot a handful for all classroom tools in one place think of class dojo for a whiteboard think of microsoft for video based lessons ted-ed if you are looking for a free platform for science education think about lab exchange if you want to create customized resources easily word will maybe a solution for visual learning materials sing link then there is a timeline maker a video discussion experience gamified quizzes and interactive lessons creator a game-based learning platform and a visual pin board i'd like to sincerely thank the department of education and the global educators network for this amazing opportunity and for the invitation to become a part of this webinar series i'd also like to thank all of you for kindly listening to my tips on how to thrive as an online educator should you have any further questions please don't hesitate to end up to be okay so thank you very much our first speaker this morning and with that we will we will be providing you the evaluation link for miss magdalena brzezinski all right um our gear participants don't forget to um answer the evaluation form by uh using the link that you can see on your screen or scanning the code there on the deck or on the slide deck actually partners i had a lot of takeaways from uh miss presents talk one of that i was amazed that there is one term already caught by bygones and that's a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning so we are learning a new vocabulary in her presentation i also like that she emphasized that we have to make our students feel noticed and even though we are separated well we have our virtual presence um for our students she emphasized that we have to make our students feel as if we support them and she also said that we have to talk with students rather than talking to students just a mere difference in preposition but that actually counted a lot i think we're not ready to have our second speaker yes and before we proceed with our second speaker we just have to remind you of using our hashtag for today so can you please flash on the screen okay so that is our hashtag uxgent yeah 2021 day two okay so please stand by for our attendance link will be given later on and where that partner will now proceed with our second speaker for this the icu coordinator for programs and projects and also functioned as the external coordinator for the office of the student activities for osa this had been a challenging experience for him to deal with activities that would interest students and engage stakeholders and school partners he embraced another challenge when he joined in 2020 as an ethics specialist of the information and communication technology service under the educational technology unit for icts and tech unit at the department of education and central office his expertise in information and communications technology was tested when he was asked to join and be part as edtech specialist in the open educational resources from oer that learning management system or lms then a tv endeavor and online there and it a free online tutorial where he became one of the main trainers in edu microsoft education programs lead is preheading different projects to the ict and tech unit he is currently taking a master's degree and is ready for his comprehensive exam for thesis in master of arts in instructional technology at christian technological university a former faculty member of marie engineering department of the technological institute of the philippines and i the consultant who worked with and supported different financial institutions on their atm hardware and software in the philippines and an id company partner in malaysia a curriculum development specialist and technical trainer for powermax center education business group and training department and currently being the epu microsoft education programs lead had prepared him to understand better the way people learn honed their skills and taking the lead to collaborate this made him as the initiator of the tech talks and microsoft innovative educator expert google certified trainer adobe creative educator and a certified apple teacher believing that integrating technology when facilitating learning can be more meaningful when personalized and made purposely for the learners for him strong support and collaboration with the school with the school stakeholders to achieve organizational goals is a must ladies and gentlemen we are proud to present to you one of our catholic specialists here at the icts department of education central office ladies and gentlemen mr mark anthony to all our international speakers participants fellow educators and learners all over the world we may all have a blessed and a greatest day today to start with allow me to to introduce myself i'm mark anthony hamishal an edtech specialist of the department of education at tech unit the project lead of microsoft education and my topic which is today the ito light online tutorial and i'm thrilled and excited to be part of this free international multi-disciplinary webinar for teachers by the edtech unit and why it to lie education plays a vital role in this modern society it helps a lot especially our children to become better citizens of the nation and get better paid jobs in the future improve the decision-making capabilities and many form in fact it is one of the keys to one's success but due to the covet 19 pandemic schools were shut down globally in which according to a research approximately billions of children were out of the classroom thus education has changed its way with a digitization whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on different digital platforms and that's where etoli was born the department of education launched this free online tutorial platform for our learners and parents and we called it ituli it is facilitated by our outstanding expert educators which aims to improve the quality learning experience in the distance learning setup it is preheaded by our department of education or depends icts information and communications technology service educational technology unit itolai was derived from the word play of etu and itulai which means to preach and yes our overall goal is to bridge the connection between our parents teachers and students for continuous education and fill in the gaps learning through web-based education system and online tutorials despite the challenges we're encountering due to this pandemic by our icts unit etec unit head mark anthony c at the start of 2021 the initiated program aims to empower and give our parents full confidence in assisting their children help our learners to fully understand the modules and help teachers in further explaining the lessons as part of the eptic unit and as a teacher as well i would say that the program was not a piece of cake it was not that easy setting it up because we have to come up with great ideas and creative ways in teaching to ensure that the information that we are giving were properly conveyed and clearly delivered and absorbed by our learners and also to assure that understanding everything would have we have discussed in spite of some economic issues they are encountering on their head most especially connectivity and accessibility issues as we know students from the remote in rural rural areas with slow internet connections would have a hard time reaching with us and sustain the learning hours since aside from having limited resources most of them experience buffering and laggy streaming experience most of the time and that's i think is the most challenging part but i also think that this is the main reason why we have this program why we need to work hard to sustain the connection by building a bridge and that bridge is e to life so how this program works with our itoli it we use the stream yard and broadcast it via facebook in different channels and uh like our debit attack unit depatio debit philippines youtube channel that will allow our students to replay and review the lessons yes they will it will uh they can watch us live and they can watch it or watch our session in a replay and the lessons are delivered in a tutorial format with virtual and detailed presentations from the tutor itself while guiding them how to answer exercises and explaining the details of the lesson since it's broadcast through facebook it's more likely interactive and it's a required in a requirement in our ito last session that it should be engaging the students can ask relevant questions if they wanted to assign tutor to the assigned tutor of the day for the specific grade level and subject matter for more effective learning no restrictions in the structure of classroom format because the concept is purely tutoring service like for example today let me ask our participants can you uh type in a heart emoji or heart icon if you have uh already uh had the chance to watch one of our e2 live sessions or if you already heard our e2 live program so type in in our comment section a heart all right so thank you so much for the hearts and you may also use our hashtag ituli it means that you are also familiar with our programs heart icon and hashtag ituli all right so thank you so much for your response and i hope that uh this also interactivity will be heard by our international participants how filipinos really support one another and uh this hashtag ituli and your heart will come up will be heard across the country the globe that uh we are really into bayanihan the teachers here in the philippines really are really supporting one another so thank you so much so again it is interactive learners participate participation is uh really obvious in our online tutorial and they can submit and the tutor can give additional tasks where learners can submit it afterwards and it is scheduled with the team's cooperation we were able to properly schedule the assigned subjects per day and posted it in our facebook page so students could also get notified about it and here is our uh table of schedule of our e2 live we're in we begin at nine in the morning and uh until uh seven in the evening from nine to twelve we have our morning habit every monday wednesday friday and our for tuesday and thursday we have our special education and our mape for tuesday and education every thursday like our uh good manners and right conduct before so jmrc and uh yes in uh wednesday as well we have our mother tongue-based multilingual education where we have our tagalog ilocano offerings and every friday we have our we call this business friday we have our epp home economics ict ple and we even have ple extended because we all know we do have a lot of ple subjects and at the one o'clock we have our uh subjects signs for monday english tuesday filipino wednesday arlington our social studies and every thursday and mathematics every friday from grade 1 to grade 10. and at four in the afternoon we are we now have our senior high school offerings and uh inc that includes also special programs which later on i'll be sharing with you um as well and at five in the afternoon we call it 5pm so you can use the hashtag else type in the comment section 5pm so we begin our alternative learning system program at exactly five o'clock in the afternoon and uh in also every friday we also have our house mobile where in one of our uh one of my co-ed tech specialists sir ariel travels and visit a house community or house center from uh different parts of the country so when it comes to tutors we encourage our dedicated educators to voluntarily participate in the program again it's volunteerism our tutors do not have or we didn't give any a monetary amount to them so they are really dedicated and what i believe the um the real you know the the root of this uh why this italia still continuously um ongoing is that our tutors are very committed and it begins with the i can share that it begins also with the emotional commitment wherein we we provide not just the tutorial but we build also emotions we build our emotional connection to our learners and that is for me is priceless right so that's volunteerism as you can see since e to lie is purely tutorial our dedicated tutors are highly encouraged to work at their convenience in an adequate location no restrictions in the classroom again they also encourage to use learning materials props and other visual representations in order to teach the learning content these materials are tremendously helpful for building rapport and getting their teaching point across in which beneficial for both tutors and students as you can see based on our images here how resourceful our tutors how creative they are and how dedicated they are and passionate they are in terms of delivering our e to life online tutorial and again etualai was designed based on the weekly most essential learning competencies or milks to provide our parents and learners an easier way to answer self-learning modules which were modeled from the different modules the pivot 4a cube we're very thankful for them they're amazing writers for allowing us to use their modules region 7 for the from the negros oriental and other divisions who allows us to use their modules and again this modules are available through our deathbed commons which is also free for access and our parents and teachers and learners can download the modules through their mobile phones even without a data or load on their phones so while the set initiative encouraged learning of the topic topic and mastery of course our academic subjects it also focus on having different special programs and these special programs can make our learning more comprehensive for our learners special programs such as mommy tech talks or in our tutors will assist our parents about how our parents can support our learners through the use of digital materials devices somehow a digital citizen citizenship for our parents speech class or in our tutor um we'll share how to speak how to pronounce how to become confident in speaking so i myself i really i really am a fan of this uh tutorial session class is a grammatical we have tagalog filipino so we would like our our learners as well to enrich everybody to enrich our filipino vocabularies and i really love this session as well pinoy digital citizen financial literacy of course this is somehow uh uh not like neglected but actually our debt ed is already uh in the process of including this in our curriculum but uh as we all know this financial literacy is really an essential life skill for everybody we really need to know how to manage and be disciplined in terms of finances and that also is a uh a fact that we are really part of this we all have our uh financial journey and our own financial journey and it's not a one-size-fits-all and this financial literacy will allow us to self-resp uh introspection to analyze ourselves how am i as how am i uh managing my finances and actually that is my session every friday so you can watch us every five twenty two six o'clock in the afternoon our financial literacy and we now we are now in our episode 12 so i'm excited to to share this and invite everyone to join our special programs and we also have our recruiting and robotics as we all know it's uh if uh i look back five years ago when i hear this coding and robotics it's only for uh rich kids of course who can afford the session for coding because uh i had the opportunity to work in a company that also offers uh tech tech tools and uh advanced uh tools like this coding robotics and it's only for our rich clients or those who can afford the clients and now we're offering it for free here in itunes so that is why i'm very passionate about this program we also have of course as mentioned not only academic subjects we would like our our learners to be holistically prepared and ready for the future so reading the mediation as well because reading is really important for our young learners to develop this this is really the foundation of their uh education the reading limitation the math limitation storytelling yeah right so this is actually uh one of one of also my favorites because of the fact that our tutors really spend a lot of time to prepare to research about the story that really fits the k23 the grade 46 and prepare for their props events uh the the background music the materials the media that they're going to use and of course the voice you know the their voice talents that is why i'm really amazed and i all while watching their episodes and again we also offer the special education and the alternative learning system yeah right so as of june 19 2021 here's some of the highlights of our program we already have 172 tutors and power tutors motivated tutors and inspiring tutors and we have 159 programs including our special programs and more than 2 200 recorded videos which will be uploaded in our which are uploaded in our depth at commons and uh soon you can watch our episodes in digital uh in a signal channel in a tv channel yes you heard it right we are uh preparing our videos and this will be uh available through television soon and watch for our announcement and uh i'm happy to say if i reported uh last march we had our 10 million reach now we do have 26 million reach in the in our debit ethic unit facebook alone so not to brag but again as mentioned i'm really passionate about this program and apparently eto like program was built not just only for learning purposes however it was also created to promote camaraderie teamwork and friendship it's uh again uh this is only some of our pictures that will portray or speaks to itself that we tutors are uh like a family and they happy to say that this team that is why it is still here that you to lie because of these people who continuously support one another and continuously build teamwork and friendship and with e2 live program participative students can confidently show off their hidden talents artworks and creativity by uploading their outputs in our social media by the way we have our debit into life facebook group and our tutor match i have our i have my own uh facebook page and where our learners can upload and send their outputs and this helps our learners to feel more valued and appreciated by their tutors and by their teachers as well right so amazing right so this is also not possible without the support of our dear parents just like this uh our truthy and mother tandem cutie callan called villarino and mommy rosario villarino from sdo hello okan morning breeze elementary school so let's watch this short video elementary school and i am [Music] i know how to spell and also i enjoy singing with her and i am proud when i get something right and i am the one who just um writes everything in one picture when jupiter felisa says because it all right so wow thank you and uh i really love the message and it's really cute so can i have a heart from our online participants type in our comment section a heart emoji or heart icon to uh to show or to express how you are uh enjoy and uh yeah feel the message of our cutie and parent tandem cutie callan and mommy rosario thank you so much from the bottom of my heart i really appreciate the support and love for our tutors and again home could be more a conducive learning environment if our parents are participating as well with them sitting beside their children while in tutorial session while they are watching our hippolyte students could focus more on the lessons exchange ideas and properly guided for their learning modules and again since itula is highly interactive parents as well are also encouraged to give feedbacks comments and suggestions for the improvement of the learning habits of their children another cute video here from one of our participants sent by uh one of our tutors tutor roma and i i couldn't resist to play this and again uh we have our parents consent that is that that allows us to uh watch this very cute video let's watch this foreign year 2020 you started to defy limits proving that education knows no boundaries bringing knowledge to every part of the [Music] as we come to a year after the tv of turning dreams into reality of courage to initiate an innovation of passion that goes beyond tradition we proudly present the first ever death tv awards outstanding teacher broadcaster awards [Music] production awards special awards and cool values awards a night of excellence and gratitude this is debit tv awards coming in august 2021 fans could focus more on the lessons exchange ideas and properly guided for their learning modules and again since it is highly interactive parents as well are also encouraged to give feedbacks comments and suggestions for the improvement of the learning habits of their children another cute video here from one of our participants sent by uh one of our tutors tutor roma and i i can couldn't resist to play this and again uh we have our parents consent that is that that allows us to uh watch this very cute video let's watch this foreign is i wow isn't it so cute again thank you so much to we do have a lot of testimonials and videos um sent by our dear parents and our learners to share their experience messages from coming from our duties and uh it will it entails us to really work hard and to really improve our e2 light tutorial and again as mentioned we do have a lot of we do experience challenges like technical challenges camera pixels internet connectivity and of even copyright materials that we really of course uh remind always be reminded about how are we going to uh use materials where can we use uh or where we can download images and videos that is uh free that is uh created commons and that is one of the part of uh challenges and uh of course we continuously uh remind them and conduct meetings and trainings for our e2 light tutorials and before they start their session we assure and we check the internet connectivity into like tutorials and at the end of the day we still have our feedback time and uh we really ask our tutors to watch their session and to self-critique themselves so that we will continuously improve and again it's not a visit cake but we rest assured that our e2 lie tutors and our e2 live program is we will continuously improve just like our mandate in our at our department continuously improve for our stakeholders right so we do have future programs and projects such as the upcoming school year eatolai awards and we're going to recognize our two tours duties and even our schools and teachers who actively participated in our utilized sessions so watch out for our uh our announcement for the um the link how are you going to nominate and to vote for our awards uh the itole awards and again we will intensify our allied tutorials for our madrasa education so i highly uh would like to invite our muslim brothers and sisters if you would like to be part of the itu online tutorial so later i'll be sharing a link and of course again our special education as well we will also intensify this program and uh later on i'll be sharing again the link how are you going to apply to become part of the e2 live online tutorial and it is also a must that we need to intensify as well our social media campaign so that our teachers learners and parents will be aware of this uh free program for all and uh more linkages with more uh partners and uh social organizations to support our program and uh of course the this will be only be possible if we're going to share our hashtag type in hashtag e2li so that we will be heard and our program will be uh are realized by our partners and the community and since it's uh almost the near of our uh the end of our school year we will uh still continue to have our etholite session and we will have our e2 live summer camp and uh good public speaking workshop for our into light tutors and even our uh duties will include this program uh or this activity so that even i myself will be needed this to uh to level up and of course to practice public speaking which is really one of the life skills really an essential uh uh skill that everyone must learn because everybody speaks and everybody had this uh this moment in our life that we need really need to speak up so that is why public speaking is included in one of our programs and uh one of uh i'm looking for is a host masters club and i'm really excited for this to be part of this community the toastmasters club all right so again we have our alternative learning system our house or our learners we're in we're going to strengthen the house community by uh supporting and having this uh e to lie even also for our sped learners and uh that will uh support the community the parents to help their learners right so we have this house and special education house and special education and as mentioned we will have our utilized summer camp so we somehow we set aside the academic subjects but the more of the reading limitation matt remediation and uh more of the hobbies like uh playing a ukulele we will have we will offer that uh this uh summer a virtual field trip more of storytelling more on uh arts and media class and i'm very excited for this uh summer camp or our itolai summer camp and that will be available next week or next next week again so if you would like to be part of this great endeavor this um advocacy i'm inviting everyone to join our e2 line if you have still have time and you have that passion and that heart to serve our learners and parents be part and be a volunteer you may type in tinyurl.com it will i apply and uh we will contact you as soon as we have these uh available uh program or subject for you and um ma my request would be if possible to check if you have a um somehow a stable and internet connection of course those are the requirements since we are used uh we are having our e2 live sessions at home and uh to make sure that we have a conducive uh and a well-lit and uh [Music] stable connection and uh all the available technical materials for you to deliver the utilize session so if you have the those minimum requirements go and apply and uh be a volunteer of e2 line so and that's our team our e2 light team and i'm very proud to say that this is really a dream team and uh we have our assistant project lead sir john wilbur and my partner in house sped sir ariel and uh our ito director managed manager mon joy salazar who manages the uh the people who are directing our uh e to lie and you're yours truly the project lead of e2 lie and of course i am i'm very thankful to be part of the the ed tech unit and uh to be given this other task and uh that i'm really passionate with which is volunteerism and uh to really support our teachers and learners and that's what it is all about it's not just an online tutorial or tutoring service it's a bridge a bridge that fills the gap between you and your dream a bridge that will connect you to your dream despite the changing world and i couldn't agree more with what our secretary leonor mcdollis brianna said that whatever is happening in the country or in the world whatever challenges we are currently facing or will be facing in the future education must continue because education cannot wait our learners cannot wait that we must continue with the process so we can give more hope and continuity and have better contribution to the normalization of activities in the country this e2 lie initiative is one of the many steps being taken by the deaf ed to ensure that this transformation happens for the benefit of our learners so i'll be ending my session with this quote from steve jobs the only way to do great work is to love what you do if you haven't found it yet keep looking don't settle our ethola is a labor of love a bayani act by compassionate and visionary teachers let us continue to unite to achieve our common goal again can you repeat it with me soolong let's make teaching memorable amazing and joyful for our learners thank you so much and have a great day thank you sir match for imparting us the impact of it and i in our learners and as each night tutors do we know how impactful the program is to our learners actually um i have this avid students who always come in in my session every tuesday for industry how about departments yes they also have my uh e2 like shooties and um every friday you can catch me on into my uh i'm discussing about the le7 that's about computer hardware servicing so we are now on our seventh week i think we only have our the next week would be the last week which is week eight for this school year what is amazing is that we are receiving feedbacks not only from student students but also from parents and they are expressing how intellect and how our sessions are very helpful to um to bridge learning despite despite the lost presence lost actual presence of teachers for our students and um i even reached um students from mindanao from visayas and from missouri i think the farthest students like that i had is from zamboanga it's that's so far from manila so i really appreciate eat today as a mechanism to connect us from our students all over the philippines yes and of course we would like to uh inform everyone how grateful we are of of course big from uh being one of the teacher broadcasters and becoming an ito like online shooter because uh we were able to bridge the gap from the word itself we were able to bridge the gap of um learning during this pandemic and um to be honest um yeah we are a family independent tv and as well as a family also in itunes and one goal for everyone is to make learning more accessible for our filipino that is right so we will now be hosting the evaluation link for um sir matches uh talk about that and online hit the line here it is okay so get your cell phones ready take a screenshot or you may save this link so you can start with the evaluation for our speaker mark anthony hamishan from the dev and icts and tech specialists our project lead for ebola yes and maybe our participants are still um wondering where is the registration link so kindly wait for that because we will be posting the link at a random time so we are sure that you are that you will stay with us until the end of our day two session yes and also we would like to invite everyone especially those who are um those who have signal cable i think signal cable in their houses in their television you can watch it live i think starting next week wow that's cool crazy yeah channel 149 so you can catch us there on your signal channel 149 so if you're not going to do anything you're just going to and you would like to learn more or if they are experiencing some connectivity issues they can definitely tune in and um tune in in our internet sessions using their television and like what cernmage emphasized at the last um part of this talk if you have talents teachers if you have talents to share with our learners all over the philippines you can join us and be one and can be one of our internationals we're so excited um for you to um to join us yes and i think our next speaker is ready so uh partner can you and gentlemen we are very pleased to introduce miss apriline b marquez we have television in cases where there is no connectivity and printed materials may not be available immediately we have the classic long time approaches which have always been used in education and this would be television what we need to do is to utilize these programs to transmit our curricula on content or lessons nanga broadcast i young males the most essential learning competencies talent will feature broadcasters we will be using our own teachers as broadcasters in this tv program type of telecast will be simultaneous and nationwide there will be one broadcaster who will be teaching in front of a camera and will be watched via tv by all learners nationwide foreign good morning everyone it's going to be a long and hard journey there will be a lot of sweat and a lot of tears i expect a lot from you are you ready oh yes greetings from philippines good morning especially to all our educator participants coming from the different part of the world imagine we have different participants coming from united kingdom usa and also from asian countries so for this day we're gonna talk about or shall i say i'm going to share with you the depth and commons and its impact but before that please give me the time to share with you the objectives of this session so at the end of the session the participants will be able to define that comments identify ways in gathering learning materials to be uploaded in the debit commons and cite the impact of that comments for the teachers learners and parents all right so before we will be having this one can we have a virtual quiz show so let's see on the comment who will be the active participant for this first question i know you are familiar with the comments therefore in your own opinion or just a simple construction or simple sentence construction can you define what is that comment so let's see who will give their own definition for that comments hey so are there some comments there okay all right so how about the other participants all right so it says here from story j this is an online portal for education yeah you are correct sergey thank you so much for your answer and from ms lynde it is a learning platform you are correct too what about the others and from miss dora antipona she said it is a hill library all right moving forward for our second question for this question who can access this platform since debit commons is one of the official platform for the blended learning and department of education what do you think and who can access for this platform yes waiting for your answers okay yes miss abby said here that it can access by the teachers the learners in the administrators and also miss marie the bell she said here both the teachers and the learners thank you so much for your participation and oh a lot of a lot of comments i'm so overwhelmed that our participants are very active this morning student teachers and parents and everybody from coming from michilo all right so as stated in your comments or shall i say as i see in the comment sections a lot of our participants coming from the different part of the world says here that it can be accessed by the teachers the learners as well as the parents could be or shall i see the administrators all right so let's proceed for the third question can you give i know some of you already access or use the comments so for the third question can you give at least three learning materials uploaded i see you explore the depth and comments i know i know you know already the content of the comments so for those active teachers who use this as references or resources let me know can you guess or you just give me at least three learning materials uploaded in the add comments let's see your answers i would like to see the comment sections from g there's milk slm yes or soft learning modules the video lessons you are correct thank you so much that you are using this this platform as well as miss edna galimba is yeah it's a platform but then we're looking for for who all right or shall i say what are the learning materials uploaded in this platform a lot a lot a lot of answer is free and yeah the self-learning module the flash evaluation what's that alright activity sheets yes video lessons learning activities worksheets slm whip okay you are all correct i'm so glad that this comments has been already maximized by our newest educators here in the philippines and i know it's not only for the public schools but also with the private schools all right and of course for the last question this is very practical question that you can answer practically of course so in your own opinion in or in your own perception what is it just give me one maybe a brief sentence construction for this what is the importance or the significance of depth and commons to you as an educator or as a teacher i'll repeat for this question what is the importance or what is the significance of that at comments for you as a teacher or in your teaching okay let's see your comments or let's see the comment section i would like also to request our director to please flash the answers or the shall i say the perceptions of our teachers who give comments in this session okay from miss oh you give me the one that's so hard to pronounce i would like how i'm going to pronounce the name of this participant today here okay it stays there that to provide education in this time of pandemic that is very practical answer and that is a great answer coming from charlottesville coming from stupendous educator thank you sir who else all right from chantello i see maglongit for this comment she said that it's a source okay it could be our source and for miss lana i use the deputy comments as one of the resources on my distance learning for learners thank you so much miss lorna and can we have another one all right from miss leilani molina keyboard servants as our references in solving our problems as we go on with our teaching learning process thank you so much it's like i'm gonna hide you with my presentation it's like we've already answered the objectives that i think that you have already maximized everything under this session all right so thank you thank you so much for for giving me the the variety of answers all your answers are correct all right so we're done already with the virtual quiz show shall we proceed for the next one i'm so overwhelmed i'm so happy i'm very glad that you really participate in this session once again thank you all right so let's proceed then what is the depth at comma so simply uh as it was stated in one of the depth at our memory and doom it is stated there that it offers access to eslms or the self-learning modules in their format and tv episodes for all grade levels which can be downloaded for free or no data charges for smart sun tnt or token text go tm or touch mobile subscribers and this can be accessed at https con slash commons.david.ph okay that is a definition coming from one of the oua memos released i think that's part of i shall i say one of the uh promo uh shall i say the online promotion for this platform and in addition as we read the the session of stream watch e2 live is also embedded or collaborated with this platform all right as we explore in comments this is how are you going to look so if you log in or if you're already activated if you already log in with this platform you can see there that you're going to select your school so meaning it's not only for the public's clothes or independent but also in private schools all right so okay it's good to know that it's not only shared coming from the different schools in depth and but also with the private schools and you can log in as a student you can log in as a teacher and uploader and approver okay and this is why you can see oh i must maybe i would like to read this to you so that you may be shall i say i would like to reiterate this one that to all the mobile subscribers of the globe the one that i've said a while ago and the tms sun and tnt access to the site using the globe or the tm virtualization smart centi network will not incur data charges it's free okay it's free and it's brought to you by of course that and will smart in cooperation with the icd and ntc and it also emphasized here one of the important nodes links on that and comments page that you to access the internet outside the domains of this comments is beyond this coverage and may incur standard visa charges all right so before we proceed with this i would like you to i would like you to watch this video that i'm going to play because these are some okay these are just some of the learning materials that we can explore in the depth and comments let me let me access this one i would like to show this one to you so we have the dev and tv since that tv is one of the learning materials embedded in this platform this is how it looks like for our participants coming from the different part of the world or in different countries this is how it looked like when it was linked in this platform all right so nice to watch [Music] okay [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] kindergarten [Music] hello oh oh hi ron how have you been sir i'm okay i need your help uh what kind of help i need you to check my essay please i'm desperate sure just send it to my email okay i need to worry though this is no ordinary essay uh what do you mean the essay seems to be cursed the previous people who tried reading it have experienced shock confusion and unexplainable headaches huh i don't understand oh you will have your step teacher ron run huh what is it [Music] ron i understand now this essay is not cursed at all it just lacks organization silly that would explain the confusion and headache it costs to your readers the vw gulf coast 1 000 less than in retain okay second what is the correct answer all right so you can type your responses or your answers in our comment box okay so grade 8 learners uh take time to give your answers okay if you have your modules with you you can write it down there or if you have a notebook or answer sheets uh yes you can write your answer there all right so you've watched already though different learning materials embedded or shall i say link in our dev ad comments in this official platform so we need to say that this learning materials are interactive so we would like also to thank all the supportive teacher broadcasters teacher broadcasters for the atv they are very stupendous magnificent and amiable you are so great teachers you are truly heroes of this nation because without you i don't think so that we can have the deputy thank you so much and of course the other one is the e to lie as you can see especially our participants that our teachers are also our tutors in the e to lie so let's have the next one i would like also turquoise our director to kindly present the next slide which is the collaborate edge here okay okay all right okay can we have it there you have it so how are we going to have the specific ways in gathering the different learning materials for the depend comma so i know all the teachers are collaborative and they are also generous in sharing different original materials that you have so meaning to say if you wanna be one or be part of the contributors of this dep ed commons or shall i say the different learning materials that we have please be collaborative or shall i say collaborate with us share with us and we will be having the different process or procedures to check our review the different learning materials that you wanna share with us so if you have a lot of self-learning modules as well as original compositions that can be shall i say used by our learners and other teachers as a reference please do so thank you so much all right i know that for this platform it gives impact not only for us but to all the teachers to all the learners and to all the parents so what are the different different significance or importance of this i know that with this kind of cases or situation that we have all over the world the pandemic i know that this depth and comments really give benefit uh this give or shall i say it aid a lot of us or shall i say it serves as resources for our teachers learners and for our parents so with that this serves first we have this serve as references or resources and we all know that it serves as a supplementary materials it not only supports the teachers but also the learners and we know that learners also enjoy the different learning sessions that has been uploaded in our ad comments and as you can see if they watch the dev tv and as well as the edo line we have here that all these learners that we are let's say this is a big or a huge interaction because this this materials are interactive and there are a lot of mastery because you can replay the different learning videos for this considering the the the shall i say considering the different macro skills and micro skills that can be honed for this and it will aid the different performances such as the performance test and the written performance test okay so i'm hoping that during this pandemic the teacher is truly united to overcome all the different circumstances and i know all teachers have this kind of big heart to independently that they exert a lot of effort just to give the best they can be for the learners not only for their learners especially for as well as for their for the parents of these learners okay so before i end my session this morning i would like to leave this petition coming from miss angela owens shared passion can you know and align all teams in any organization once again thank you very much for listening my session have a good day thank you [Music] [Music] if we would analyze the baseline of uh the reads of radio this is 85 percent three tv 88 digital cable and satellite tv that is 47 and internet 63 you would see that if you use tv and radio you would already reach 100 percent of the entire population this is the conclusion arrived by kantar even though pre-tv is 88 and even the radio is 85 when you combine the two you reach 100 of the population see we have to start with ourselves there is life beyond modules there is education beyond test of s there is that radio there is [Applause] thanks thank you so much ma'am apple for sharing with us the impact of deb and comments actually partner i started um i started uh with my journey here in icts as one of the contributors of debit comments so i have shared some of the materials that i had in my classroom in the in the website so other teachers and other students can actually use my materials in their classrooms too yes and we would like to inform also everyone regarding with adapted comments that you can access this site of the department of education even without a loop you know you don't have to uh by any load as long as you are connected with your uh mobile network and that will different you can access to commons.net.gov.ph and that's very helpful because we know that some many students are actually affected by um connectivity issues we actually call that as digital divide so we acknowledge that issue that's why we have this um we have that that kind of feature that it can be accessed without any data okay so uh before we proceed with our next speaker we would like to remind everyone regarding with the evaluation link that we're going to post here for our previous speaker our topic is all about them and commons and our speaker is miss aprilie b marquez you may use the link that you can see on [Applause] [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] there you go thank you for my web uh webinar directors for helping me manage my uh my presentation okay it is an honor to be one of the speakers for the second day of our webinar series my topic that i prepared is entitled how to teach teach english amidst changing and high maintenance environment just a disclaimer even though my presentation is for english teachers everyone every teachers from different disciplines can actually listen and um learn about how to teach and manage a changing and high maintenance environment so these are the objectives of my presentation first revisit the phrase information driven society and analyze what it means to our society economy and education second determine how an information driven society produces a changing and high maintenance environment in teaching and learning third identify the contingencies that can be studied to equip teachers and learners with the understanding of the nature of the near future and the last objective of my presentation is involve teachers especially teachers of english by giving suggested activities so that they can adapt to a changing and high maintenance environment due to information driven society i know that's quite heavy but i know that you will join me and that you will really listen to my presentation i think all my participants are already already ready if you have noticed the title of my topic has two big words and these big words are changing and high maintenance by the word changing i believe that your teaching experiences from a pandemic classroom are sufficient to construe that indeed in the span of one year so many changes have taken place keeping up with the fast transitions striving to adapt with the requirements of a different teaching and learning environment and being anxious with one's safety are really not easy to deal with we educators have done a job well done for surpassing things we thought was unsurpassable and accomplishing things we felt was impossible that's why we have to be proud of ourselves we have proven that we are not only professionals with many hats due to the numerous responsibilities that we have in hand but we have also shown that we wear badges and medals of unparalleled commitment to duty exemplary service and distinguished love for our craft well actually among the things that i have mentioned i i believe that the most important is having that love for our craft because if we really love what we're doing we can do anything we have now come to a time for us to celebrate to celebrate the fruits of our labor and sacrifices and definitely the rest that we much deserve for the school year 2020 2021 2020 2021 will soon end i believe that educators from other parts of the world are taking their time off so that they can do more and great things and i believe teachers that rest is very important for us because we did a lot of things we accommodate so many changes so we can really look forward to that rest that we have that we are finally waiting for with the tears and fears that we overcame is the new and stronger cause at the end of everything even though the pandemic has a lot of negative effects i i believe also that one of its positive effects is that it made us stronger it made us more resourceful and it made us more are responsible with our teaching that at least even the environment would change we we can still manage and um aside from that i believe that we fear change because of the element of uncertainty we do not really fear fear for the fear itself but we are afraid of fear because we don't know what to do and we get and we are scared of the things that we don't know and it's natural okay as we are let me go back to that let me go back to my topic okay with the tears and fears that we overcame is the new and stronger us at the end of everything like what i said a while ago but we know ends are only segments for a new beginning as we ought to face a new school year the question is not yet the question is what do we need to innovate now that so that we can handle better online distance and their blended learning i believe our experiences can be used to make us better we must to answer that question i know that we must have an idea of what the future looks like i know that in the many webinars and workshops that you attended the phrase information driven society is a buzzword it already reached a word of mouth status and has been too common that it lost its meaning already for today i would like us to revisit what does it really mean what does an information-driven society really mean is having an information driven society only means that we have improved our connectivity and information and it can be harvested and retrieved without consuming much time or is this information society a total transformation in society and history and we educators are the focal population that incite its emergence according to former president fidel v ramos the most important wars of the 21st century will be fought no longer on the fiscal battlefield like that in the 20th 18th and um the other centuries but in corporate boardrooms laboratories stock exchanges classrooms and shop floors even though we are familiar with these places do you notice anything in the places that he mentioned in his statement the places that he mentioned need three things and what are these three things those places need people communication and a problem to solve with i'd like to emphasize that an information society builds its foundation and knowledge there is more information than ever before and our society feeds feeds on it a person cannot live without food water and air as its nourishment and soul is an information driven society without the generation of knowledge and information products and services are not only those that have monetary value today but we are seeing that information is gradually having its own this is because society is propelled by a knowledge-based economy they are connected ideas are not just a product of one's mind but are actual products someone can find value on and earn from but let us not deviate to the monetization of ideas though i know it sounds interesting and profitable let us focus on this question and i want you to focus on this something to ponder if this is the kind of society and economy our children are living right now and in many years hence what should be the preparation that we educators should provide that is an interesting question to ask isn't it and a critical question to boot education like what sir salvador manning saudi first said is the developer of the human capital i chose to use the word um developer because it has a builder connotation to that word as i mentioned we educators wear many hats and among the many things that we are responsible with is building the knowledge skills and experiences that our learners need once they step out from the comfort of schools we must build as much as we can quality experiences that would serve as foundations that would fortify the readiness of our students to the demands of the real world and we know that the demands of the workplace their demands are becoming higher and greater it is stated in the mission of the department of education that first teachers facilitate learning and constantly nurture every learner and administrators and staff as keywords of the institution ensure an enabling and supportive environment for effective learning to happen this means that teachers and teachers and the administrators and staff should work hand in hand to provide quality education but i would like to put our attention to the word nurture because i believe it's a special word because it means that educators are not only responsible with learners development but also cares much further growth there is an effective meaning or effective shade of um definition to the word nurture this if we dig deeply emphasizes that the education of the heart is the heart of education teachers teach not only with the vision of children's tomorrow but also with the love of their present realities and when we start and when we accept the present realities of our students that's the time we can understand their situation and if we understand their situation that's the time we can love them teaching students most of the time becomes synonymous to caring for learners and instilling in them the right the right or the good values that the right mind and the good values that prepare them for the future now let's talk about the future the future is not too far away for us to have to not have an idea about it with the creation of jobs that are yet to unfold because it said that in the years to come we haven't really imagined the jobs that would thrive what educators have been doing for the past years is to teach students to attain total human development towards sustainable development so i believe those are big birds too that we need to analyze total human development let's go back to the previous slide total human development is easy to understand and i know it's a common word already it is trying to achieve holistic development through embedding in the curriculum the learning experiences that enhance the cognitive emotional and behavioral aspects of our learners but what about total human development towards sustainable development because these uh these words are big and we need to um analyze them sustainable human development is eyeing for progress without taking for granted the future that the future generation has needs that will be owned that will be available only if the present generation is aware that they should utilize resources wisely create this kind of awareness is not easy it is only when people of the day have reached a certain kind of enlightenment and empathy for people unborn yet to sustainable development be fulfilled this is why human total development is necessary for sustainable development we build and nurture students not only for today's sake but also for the future sake so they would care for people to be born they would give her the pros for the posterity for a knowledge-based economy that we live in and in the years to come training for the creation of ideas and knowledge is vital developments in society and economy rely on the generation of fresh views and concepts that why we have those they it's quite down thing that they are too many we have to accept them um right now more than ever one of the focuses of many companies is to train workers to be creative and innovative upskinning prevents fossilization and stagnation of knowledge and skills due to the emerging ideas that keep on coming in here's the reason the kind of environment that we live today is maintenance high maintenance means needing a lot of work to keep on good condition we have to really um we have to really exert effort for one for something to be called it high maintenance and that is the kind of environment that we have today aside from that it is a changing environment in the academy we often hear this expression one should publish so he will not perish but in the workplace we have this um we have this expression already because of the environment that is now taking place if um if one or one must update so he will not stagnate i'll repeat that juan must update so he will not stagnate upscaling retraining and continuous professional development indeed takes a lot of work and i know that because you really have to take exam certifications review and tests but i will reiterate again that if we will not update we will just stagnate but we should update not because it's it's for the sake of promotion but because we want to have an intrinsic motivation that we want to cultivate ourselves for the best that we can be the role of education has always been emphasized and its role to ready us for the future is emphasized more than ever before as a developer of human capital the future should be one of the targets of education education as a developer of human capital receives the responsibility of developing the people of its nation however the kind of society and the economy that emerge poses a bigger challenge to education now the question is what kind of challenge is that is that investing in education investing in education needs to be compatible with developing technologies so they should go hand in hand change is very immediate that people must keep in place by developing new knowledge and skills people will be more conscious with what they know and how they can know more things so that they can do more and live better if you would notice jobs are not much doing routine tasks going to your workplace sorting out papers signing some stuff but we can observe that the name of the game was the name of the game already is the creation of knowledge thus education must emperor on the prerequisites of collaboration problem solving and critical thinking so what are their prerequisites these are creativeness responsiveness and adaptability again we cannot really uh we cannot really develop collaboration problem solving and critical thinking if we haven't really thought the importance of creativeness responsiveness and adaptability in our classroom for albert einstein for albert einstein intelligence is much more than knowledge one should be able to imagine like what um a famous um carton character imagination and imagination is more important than ever before because knowledge can be gotten from the internet knowledge is everywhere information is everywhere but it's the ability to do and think of a new content that's why now imagination is stressed than ever before one should be able to imagine because imagination is is the wealth from where creativity springs right now let us ask the following questions and reflect on our teaching have i mentioned to my class even once the imagination is important in conceiving ideas two have i talked to my students that have i told my students that imagination is an avenue to explore thoughts and ideas third have i empowered my students not only to think deeply but also to think creatively so in the classroom we must welcome the creative ideas of our students though it might they they might sound so strange they might sound so random but believe me educators um thinking creatively is one of the needed skills in the 21st century because we have to we we have to make new content because um information is everywhere so what are we to contribute to that kind of scenario by allowing learners to imagine to speculate possibilities and to make visions of the future they can be responsive to new thoughts and ideas certainly it is hard to accept things when one has not seen them yet that's true but thinking creatively allows one to envision what is intangible yet because they can really visualize it in their imagination when we try to inculcate creativity and the ability to imagine to our students we also train them to be adaptive of the new changes now let me share with you my realization after i passed the microsoft certification microsoft certified educator examination the certification is focused on testing how an educator can teach following the 21st century learning designer called 21 cld this design is this design the 21st century learning design is composed of five components skill communication self-regulation constructing knowledge real world problem solving and innovation and using ict so if you would um if you would notice to these components they're quite heavy but these aspects are those skills that our students need in the classroom especially in preparation of the future and with the kind of environment that we have now changing and high maintenance let me share with you the rubrics for each of the aspects of this 21st 21st century learning design for skilled communication we have four levels so i will let you i will let you read the levels but if you would see the um communication here uses multimodal and the communication should be offend authentic there should be an imagine if not imagined an actual audience to where the communication should be delivered for self-regulation in here we are teaching students to be independent of their own learning because in the other models of education teachers seem like teachers are depositing the knowledge to to the students and students would withdraw their knowledge through examinations and that's quite a limited aspect of education a very a very small um and not a comprehensive application of knowledge that's why we should teach our students to be able to self-regulate to own their knowledge to other knowledge and to manage their learning and we have four levels here but if you would see in the highest level of self-regulation the students should be able to plan on their own schedule receive feedback and revise their work using the different opinions that they received quite daunting but these are the targets and these are the challenges that we should set to our learners next self-regulation is the is knowledge construction rubric in here if students can regulate their schedule can manage their uh can manage their learning they should also be able to construct knowledge so in here we have five levels and for knowledge to and for level five the knowledge should be interdisciplinary it can it should be and it can be applied in different areas of studies and disciplines next is problem solving and innovation rubric like what i said the knowledge should be interdisciplinary it should cut across different areas of studies and disciplines and it should also be something that can be used in actual problems that are existing in the world today because knowledge would not be useful if it can if it can't be applied that's right after um real world problem solving is your use of ict and like the like the other two like the other two aspects of 21 on cld these this has five aspects the the use of ict using ict in constructing knowledge and using ict as a mechanism to produce a product to be offered to authentic users now if you would see in each of the highest level in in the highest level of each aspect of the 21st century learning design uh learning design describe knowledge and its creation as follows let me go through them one by one first knowledge is practical it is fine true to a particular and actual audience and is created for the solution of a problem in existence second knowledge must knowledge must be radical there should be a specific use for creating it knowledge is not useful if not used to improve the processes and systems that are already happening or that are or the processes and systems that we already have finally creating knowledge is gradual it cannot be speeded why because knowledge is built on feedback we must be able to take to take um importance on receiving feedback and inputs from others because from very constructive criticisms is where we will grow i know many or i know we we have this attitude to be quite to be quite sensitive in receiving feedback but i want you to slowly give up that attitude and um slowly gradually welcome um constructive criticism around you because if you will not listen to the inputs of others and what they think about your performance what what they think about um about the things that you can improve more you will not really grow like what i said we must update so we will not stagnate and creating i i think that's done okay to achieve these learning designs and to make our students future ready information and media literacy skills are needed to prepare our learners for the nature of work in the years that's why we are now pressing on the importance of media and literacy skills they must know where to look for information how to process it meaningfully and purposefully and how to utilize it appropriately to solve problems with little to no instruction and we will start by opening by making them exposed to different kinds of um gadgets by making them exposed to different resources of information and i know that's challenging but we must try so that they can be able to do these things in the future our learners that is why we have to have a growth mindset it's kind of hard to develop people but if we but if we won't try that that won't happen but if we try a little bit who knows we must also um we must also know that upgrading knowledge and skill should be a habit rather than a requirement and i think i i told this already that when we are upgrading our knowledge it should not be because we want promotion but it should be a habit inputs because we uh we have this intrinsic motivation to always uh form ourselves to the best self that we can be now since i have mentioned everything about the environment about the the economy the the education that we was able to attain how can we teach problem solving and critical thinking especially in english as an english teacher i have this dilemma because these are critical skills that i know my students should be able to know but um with a challenge comes with a trying and trying would what i know the trying would um make me near to the solution of the problem learning i believe that today learning should also put value in the power of collaboration like the first like with the first like what the first speaker said we should um harness to the power of collaboration in our classroom and putting heads together is when people learn problem skills and cultivate critical thinking skills okay so as an educator how can we teach these critical skills um first is to revisit the kind of question that we are that we give to our students often than not often than not many learners uh many learners are complaining um learning english is quite boring but maybe we haven't given them the right materials to read we haven't given them the right texts to to model to write and we haven't really taught them to process their ideas creatively and comprehensively that's why we must know how to give the right question we must not use the old art of questioning because when we have the right questions we are modeling to our students how to analyze ideas and how to question ideas so that they can craft better answers and then generate better ideas though we know lots are lower or lower order thinking skills in hot or higher order thinking skills it's a little bit different when we apply them in the classroom because we have an actual student also the art of questioning never loses its value even though the modernization even through the modernization of teaching and learning second is to have students exposed to different kinds of information this is what i call information exposure to attain information fluency the challenge of the day i will reiterate it's not finding information anymore because information can be gotten everywhere it can be gotten through the top of our fingers using our gadgets but the real challenge today is to look for the right information and to curate them the the magic word is curation it's already available but how can you use the information for your own purpose or making information more valuable or using information to other higher purposes when students are exposed to different kinds of information and they are guided in its analysis in organization the they learn the right use of information that is crucial not only to academic success but soon to professional success also learning how to use information properly helps solve problems more effect effectively and efficiently because you can make use of the different information around you third is to encourage collaboration i cannot stress this further because collaboration right now is really important why because gone are the days that students hurt only on their own that does not help them to know how to how it feels to manage different opinions and consolidate them so they can create a single decision decision as a team the workplace of today values working as a team and being responsible with individ individual tasks that contribute to the success and progress of the team whereas we are achieving teamwork we should also be interdependent with our own tasks if educators continue giving more individual activities it is like putting our learners in a cave away from the realities of the outside world fourth is to conduct role-playing when possible i know this cannot be really tried right now because of the connectivity issues but role playing can be done first by one student okay because doing role playing helps students to to have the feel of the real thing it's a simulation and in conducting role-playing again when possible is for us to see our students um showcase their talents and when students showcase their talents they it it boosts their confidence and it also um gives them the chance to explore more about themselves especially when we are teaching in the junior high school levels we must be able to offer activities uh where students will explore more of themselves because they are in the process of getting themselves better and when we are providing these activities we are also um helping them to be guided and to seek from supported and appropriate individuals the self that they will be in the future to come fifth is to access the community i kind of stress on this much further that there's that there should be a link between the school and the community because i know educators know that the school can't stand alone that's why teachers or educators in the school should have an access to community why there is this uh saying by benjamin franklin tell me and i forget show me and i may remember involve me and i will learn nothing can compensate to problem-based learning and i believe problem-based learning is also discussed by our first speaker when learners see that their ideas help shape the community to become a better place to live in learning for learning for our learners becomes more meaningful because they can actual they can because they can see the actual application of their knowledge for sure the community has many needs that can be tackled with inside a classroom and how can we do it through the through localization through localization we provide clear context for knowledge application and it's making our assessment authentic and definitely practical i know i said a lot of things and right now let me summarize all the important concepts that i have given you for today first an information driven society built it built its found builds its foundation and knowledge second education is the developer of the human capital third investing in education needs to be compatible with developing technologies technologies fourth to teach english in a changing and high maintenance environment a teacher of english may do the following because i i believe uh our educators especially our english teachers have are um are good in planning their classrooms are good in thinking of strategies to really touch the lives the hearts and the minds of our learners first revisit the kind of questions given to students make them critical um a yes or no or a question for a question that needs a yes or no answer will not suffice learn the art of questioning because even though we have a modernization of teaching and learning questions are really vital to develop problem solving skills and critical thinking skills second have students exposed to different kinds of information so they can be able to manage it so they can be able to know where to get information and to process it third encourage collaboration fourth conduct role playing if and when possible and fifth access the community we must do localization so learners can have an actual application of their knowledge i would want to end my speech with this message we can really teach and how can we teach by transforming education by analyzing changes and having actions rather than reactions we must be proactive in accepting change and like i said a while ago we are not afraid of change because we are just afraid of change we are afraid of change because it delivers something that we do not know and we have this inherent fear of the unknown and if we teach today as we talked yesterday we rob our children off tomorrow thank you and have a nice the day of education through the office of under secretary for administration the oua information and communications
