David Walliams - The One Show 14/12/2018

tonight's guest is going to be very busy this Christmas he's on our TVs in our big shops and in our theaters - yeah now either we can't get enough of him or he doesn't know how to say no please [Applause] [Music] walking out the door this evening and he looked very very forlorn and he was he wanted to come with me so I thought I'd bring him it's Barrett everybody yes I do he's a border terrier he's absolutely yes two for the price of one like you're very busy this year at Christmastime busier than Santa some would say lots going on um well yes so I'm very lucky I've got a couple of books out and and also I've got a couple of films on the TV as well one is the midnight gang which is an adaptation of one of my children's books as on Boxing Day and another is an adaptation of soo Townsend's novel The Queen and I which is without the royal family going to live on accounts which Susan is particularly excited about well I love Susan I always wanted to film that and we finally done it's gonna be on sky1 on on Christmas Eve yeah that should be good but you know you are kind of like father Christmas by now in a lot of white being put on weight do love right into you don't we yeah we do you reply well I do but it's becoming quite a task because she'll does it could imagine that you know once you reply to one trial they bring into a school well if you don't want to success well it's now know is lovely it's a lovely problem to have and also it's a joy to read letters and also to connect with kids that you know you write the books for because you write the books on your own you know you'll just sat on your own in your study it's happening away your computer and you sometimes just forget who you're actually writing for yeah and so will you do book signings and events and things of that it's lovely for kids to talk to you and tell you what they think of your books and also kids are quite critical they're quite happy to tell me honest wish books of mine they don't like audience when I did stand-up for kids once and a girl put her hand up and I said yes would you like and she just went you're not funny but it was crushing and more than 25 million books sold I think around well it's nice yeah and a lot of those about half of those around the world as well so I in 53 languages I can't even think of 53 languages so I don't even know what languages they are but it's a wonderful but it's brilliant and two of them I write at the top of the bestsellers list now tell us about the two that are out for Christmas then because they for different age groups as well yes okay so book number one is called the ice monster and it's set in 1899 in Victorian London and it's a bout a woolly mammoth that's found under the ice and is brought back to life by a little homeless girl and they have to go on the run so I had so much fun writing that some of it set around the Natural History Museum some of it around the Royal Hospital Chelsea with the Chelsea Petra's live Queen Victoria's in the story and you know this is actually my 11th novel and you do worry you know you're sort of writing and writing write anything I really want to repeat myself so it was really helpful setting it in Victorian times we did wait to see that Dame Judi Dench inspired you slightly yes because I never got to meet the real Queen Victoria I know I look old enough clothing but look who doesn't love Dame Judi Dench and she's played Queen Victoria twice incredibly and I watched both films and watched Victorian outdoor which I absolutely love yes and so I included Abdul in the ice monster as well because because he was part of her life in 1899 and there's a whole whole part of the book which is also about how much she's missing Prince now the lovely thing about it's a brilliant story but there's so much to learn and at the end you do a synopsis of Queen Victoria I mean there's a lot of history in there as well it's a very rich time because it sort of just that sort of dawning of the modern world so sort of you know like inventions are just coming in like I use a Zeppelin in the story if we're talking just been invented you know at some point a submarine creeped certain things like that it's just it's just an incredible incredible moment in history and also I don't know about you but I always loved stories set in Victorian times I mean I Charles Dickens of the very earth you know a lot earlier but it was there was for Christmassy somehow I don't know why and then your other book of course is very Christmassy because there's a little penguin or thinks he can fly yeah it's Geronimo is a picture book that I've done with Tony Ross tell us also illustrated the ice monster he has about a penguin who who believes he couldn't fly and all the other Penguins in the colony all get together to to make that dream come true this is very sweet story so it might be good for your I can I can watch that dynasties because I know it's not gonna make me feel like that nothing terrible pain wins I couldn't lose them it's the food chain it is I'm I said I don't like watching animals getting eaten day especially not the cute ones but anyways to move on to happy attack me 10 years tho David since your first book which is boy in a dress now we hear rumors that it might be turned into a stage show just a rumor it's true oh yes Robin Williams through the music Robbie Williams and I chambers his co-writer they flatly source mark Ravenhill is amazing playwright he's adapted it and it's gonna start of the the Royal Shakespeare Company Rockford next Christmas as a musical so I'm super excited I've been to various workshops and rehearsals and it's sounding and looking great I mean I can't believe it because they were saying oh we're gonna ask Robbie Williams to do this songs I think he well yeah but he's not gonna do any party biz there you know and he was into it and and and he's written these wonderful wonderful songs so fingers crossed him is a whole year away but I can't help being excited about it already hey we'll talk to you again next at david's books the ice monster and Geronimo are out now and no David it's it the time of year for these let's give you one of these I want to see me appeal it because apparently can judge people and on how appeal the earth section is quite as a bit messy isn't Oh where did he start see I thought it would be like that considered I'm not very skilled at this kind of thing because like he's just he's just going for it and she's ripping it apart child most people peeing at all and their neatest but no Dave is desperate a beautiful film to reach 400 on the Kangas lovely beautiful now you you touched on it earlier midnight gang which is one of your adaptations is on telly over Christmas let's have a look at you in action I play headmaster quite wicked onto crawlin Calais a woman after my own heart do you hate animals too nearly as much as children children literally or metaphorically mister boring place we shall have to sing about nature elating the documentary I always wrote myself the juiciest part when you're a writer you're thinking in the back of your head that would be good for me to do sometimes yes it's always good to play a villain I mean villains are the ones that make stories happen I always think without Volda more Harry Potter's just having a lovely day at school so it's actually really good fun to play the villains my paid Bert who's actually named after Bert here who's the evil villain in rat burger last year and this one I played the evil headmaster but the story's all set around a hospital with his kids are trapped in hospital and they're bored and frustrated and they're part of the secret society in the midnight game and they all bind together to make sure those dreams come true so it's a it's Allen Davis is the star up there and he places this Porter character he's brilliant in it and I'm really thrilled with it it's on Boxing Day so it's a lovely family film yeah we'll be watching yeah pajamas duvie phione yeah yeah absolutely no Brussels sprouts often well I'll give all the staff a little wave this weekend and thank you all for service absolutely no parent thinks this is a real fire I think what's fair was better getting for Christmas he's getting a signed copy of one of my children well that's it for tonight's thanks to David the
