wake that ass up in the morning the breakfast club morning everybody it's dj envy angela yee charlemagne the guy we are the breakfast club we got some special guests joining us this morning we have tamila and david mann welcome thank you thank you for having me lost some weight there brother huh well i'm trying that ain't the problem the problem is keeping it off that's the problem yeah that's the fact trust me so much weight they said you lost like 30 pounds yeah i'm just trying to watch my diet trying to do right trying to do a little something and you're both on this journey together yeah which i think is helpful yeah we are hey we we've been tracking a long time 33 years so we're trying to keep up with each other now how now tamara do you do you have to cook a lot differently now uh when we we do a little bit but we we try to try to keep it you know straight narrow it's not too much not too much not too many cars yeah and i stopped doing meat so i don't i don't know definitely different did you stop doing me no sir that's one thing she told me like that's you you know i'm sorry so now she's preparing the meal they got some some chicken or maybe some lamb or some steak or some whatever but do you not eat do you eat chicken salad seafood no none of that i'm just after about about five years i'm trying to put a little seafood in there okay so every once in a while i have some of that but other than that like beef and pork 15 years right but it was hard trying to cook for it though honestly because it's like okay then i'm trying to find the like if i do the family of meatloaf with our turkey and stuff give me something else beyond meat uh okay meatloaf or something you know something like create something create something for you yeah oh my goodness now listen i was watching one of y'all um you guys sitting down with your the and i want to talk about this skydiving thing okay because envy does that he jumps out of plane does not i don't does that i did it one time well we didn't do we we were trying we've been trying different stuff so we hadn't done the skydiving i know you haven't yet yes but i want him to talk about his experience oh oh so my wife uh got me a skydiving experience for one of my birthdays and you know we went and i was scared as hell we went up in this little ass plane and my wife she's a daredevil so she was all excited um and i just remember getting up in this little ass plane and it was like all right they opened the door and they said put your leg out and i'm holding on to the dash of the plane i'm like my leg won't move there's like you got to get out now i'm like my leg will not move my wife caught me a couple of uh words i don't want to say it was probably punk something yes he's my friend and i was like i'm gonna do it i got out and i did it and i loved it it was it was just a freeing experience yeah that's something i want to experience something you didn't feel like your stomach was up there no it wasn't that bad it's nice and smooth once you get out and you start it's smooth and there's someone with you right like on your back yeah there's some money on my back which feels a little awkward a little awkward but it's comfortable because he knows what to do with something i'd rather have a better than that yeah he knew how to maneuver everything but then when we landed you know me and my wife was like this was amazing before you get to that part before you get to that part so do you think this is something that you guys really might do i think it's something i would try i think that's something they might try as i get older i want to try less but you know my younger years it was like let's go he did want to do it yeah but you know that's stuff that we do on man man tv man family dinner and stuff like that we want to try different stuff that brothers wouldn't normally go try the one that they have you know how to have those inside that's more difficult that was more difficult really yes that was i did that too that's more difficult you know what y'all can try that might be a good start trapezing they have like we went to that the trampoline parks no trapeze not trampolines you hold on to the bar and you're oh you're trying to kill it no it's actually i did that and that's not that bad it is bad because when you fall you fall into like a nice soft pit of that's just the scary so you hear what she's saying but no you don't you i didn't know how to fall i didn't know what i was doing you younger you recover easier we we 55. let me tell you about what after he jumped out the plane so when we jumped out the plane we thought we were all good and we had a producer his name was q he was like i want to tell you before you go but have you seen the videos i'm like what videos he says the videos of people dying and he showed me the videos of like yes the parachute not opening up this is this your friend yes he's not a friend he should have told you this before he was like we got an opening on the breakfast electric cuties that's true i said i'll never do it again that was it i got it out my system and that was it well i'm gonna go out for you i'm just gonna go off of your experience thank you you're welcome you taught me well i might try hopefully i won't my next trip to the breakfast club won't be like this my goodness but those are the things that you do and even with the the um trapeze that was pretty fun okay i took the kids the whole family went with me i was the only one that didn't go from one trap piece to the other i could not let go of the bar it was i was just swinging back and forth ah see i would have tried it i think you just dropped down no i would have tried to flip too much grandkids i'll take the grandkids and watch them i video them doing it yeah i would a trip try to try to flip to the next one so i i'm good with it i'll stay on the ground now listen this new album overcomer is very inspiring and i do love the song that you have with wyclef and kirk franklin because you know it got a little caribbean vibe hello god yes i think it was really fun putting it together we had the course of covert and everything we had to do it separately tell covert to go to hell me and kirk me and kirk did hours together because we're both in the same city right and uh we did it at his studio and then wycliffe sent his stuff and uh it was just amazing how it happened though cause kirk i was talking to him in studio and said i really want to do a caribbean song so when i do get to go to the islands i can you know i haven't you know we think okay you know what cliff's going to do with the gospel people you know because we don't really get that much less not that much love it's like he's going to do it with gospel timeline man and so kirk asked him do you know the timeline yeah man so he calls and i'm like thinking that kirk is playing a joke on me like no this is really me man it's like oh so you really want to do the song he said yes i want to do a song i was excited about i was like a kid in the candle store i was like he unfold him it's a vibe yeah yeah yeah it's a it's my fun song it's just saying hello god just wake up in the morning just give thanks just thank god for another day that's a good drive to work in the morning yes this is a wake-up song good wake-up great wake-up song man and let me ask you this but kind so okay i was talking about kanye's new album donda and i do like like the fact that his songs have these i like the songs that are more like religious that are on his album like more have that kind of feel to it you know what i mean like they feel spiritual have you listened to it because i haven't had a chance to hear the new new one i haven't had a chance but i i was reading the reviews and i was like oh oh yeah some of the reviews came from up here oh yeah yeah but i haven't had a chance to hear any of it yet but you know if i feel like if we spread the good news and you know you're trying to inspire and uplift people and give people hope to me that's what gospel music is about it's about the good news bringing good news and just encouraging people right now all of us need some type of encouragement that's why we did the album overcomer just to let people know that we can overcome whatever obstacles that we're going through because all of us are dealing with something and we need help through something help with something and just just i'm just sending people as an encourager that god is my source he's my help and that that's how i get through things is with god let me ask you a question and not talk about kanye well what do you feel like when you see pastors or musicians or artists where they speak the good word and they speak it but then when you see their life they don't live it because the gift comes without repentance that's what the scripture says so i mean sometimes some people are very good at what they do what they do and they the thing about it is they may be able to help somebody out of what they're dealing with they can't help themselves and can't help themselves and i think what what they need like what we all need is grace and mercy more grace because uh i think sometimes we put people on a pedestal and say if you mess up you know that's it and i think we have to start showing more grace to each other that's what we have to do more love more i i've decided in the last two years what covert has taught me is to love more and judge less okay so if i'm doing that i'm going to say okay bro i understand you made a mistake you're not perfect let's pray let's restore and let's move on what if they don't feel like they made a mistake then you got then they have another then they have then that's out of our hands right because all we have to do is just again like just like our kids we try to be the best example that you can for your kids your grandkids or just people watching you guys just like with this it's like you're not going to do everything right everybody's not going to like everything you say they're not going to like everything that we do but all we can do is just be the best example that we can be do you call people out on their bullish though yes i would yes he does no no but if it's not good he'll say it's not i think you need to sometimes because i think people need to know the truth because a lot of times the people around you are there for different reasons you know yeah like you know like you know my best friends my closest friends are gonna tell me what they mean because they know it doesn't matter they're not there for a check they there because they generally love me right now what i'm learning to do is temper how i see it now because see me i haven't learned that yet i'm i'm i say i'm learning okay learning yes i'm learning because sometimes it's not it's how we say it it's not what what you're saying is probably really good and me and it sounds good but how we say it don't come out the right way probably what you're saying is right but you probably just putting a little uh on it to make it feel but i i think you cannot help i think you can't let people just get get by with just doing foolishness right you know because we have this thing when we're in the studio if it sucks and it's terrible tell me in here where we only laugh don't get outside the door where millions of people here and then you say i told you i i started to say something no you should have said something no i and i got you know what and that's one thing i love about my wife sometimes it's too too honest your wife and your husband's the one that can stab you and you know it really hurts brutal honesty brutally like we got 33 years old yes we got 26. but you're on our coat table you've got but i got friends and sometimes they're so honest you get so mad but then you realize i have a friend tina she works at deaf gym right now she calls me every morning and she tells me some always some she'll tell she'll leave with negative and then end with positive right but it's always some bullish right yeah but you know she loves you because she's staying from a good place you know and that's it's that's hard to receive something and you have to be able to trust the person it has to be people that you genuinely trust absolutely somebody that has your best interest somebody that has your heart and you know you're not just telling me this just to tell you telling me to help me and guide me on the right path but you also have to know that people have their own things that they're dealing with that we may have no idea about from the outside looking in that's right so things can appear away but i think we do have to be more empathetic to people especially during this time even we're talking about her new project people don't know that this project was a journey yes it was like it was a full journey like people don't understand the behind the scenes stuff that was going on with her like with the pain i was like dealing with with my knees like working doing the plays doing all the television stuff and and studio and then i wound up doing double knee replacement because it got that bad and that feels like how painful was that because that feels like it it was very painful at first i was like okay i'm just gonna do one then i was like no i'm gonna go ahead and do both so i won't have to take off work another six months so you know so let's kill any my doctor was like i believe you had a good age where you can handle dealing with and recover working through both and but it was a lot of pain i cried we did some social media stuff i was like and in between that trying to walk trying to figure out how to walk going to i had to get up this tests your in sickness and in health in your marriage because he was like i got a noob he said you acting like a newborn cause i would wake up in the night was like come on i want to walk i want to just get up and just move around you know just keep the stiffness keep your body just mobile and it was a work it was yeah but thank god for great help bottom line thank god for good health being around you especially with that type of surgery you got to have somebody there to help you and then in the middle of that you know you got a pandemic right and then mama's dealing with menopause yes and listen i love that you are so open about that because you're right we don't talk about that enough we don't like i've never really heard anybody just i've heard people like mention it or make a joke about it you heard about the change you was like you going through the change i was like i heard that growing up all my life like what is the change and now that i'm in it it's like to me now that we're in it we're in it ten times worse yes we are demanding it's ten times worse than i you know people think when you have your monthly it's it's it's terrible this is terrible because it really sends you on a roller coaster and it's like out of nowhere it's like this morning coming i was sweating i was like i'm put on makeup and i was just sweating i was like i'm really not hot but you're sweating the emotional part of it is crazy because i will be happy then all of a sudden oh oh it would be like because it was like cause she talks to me really sweet like babe you know she's great and i love you and then she came back from the kitchen is like i'mma kill you tomorrow it changes and it's like it takes some it's like something taking over your body that you don't know that's happening so i'm just saying for you and your wife you know whenever that happens y'all be patient with each other and that's the reason why i'm sharing it for people not to give up give up on each other because i've seen some friends of mine to divorce at 30 years and i really believe in my heart that it was due to menopause and heard not and them not seeing it david started doing research and all of this because i stayed up a whole night and read a whole just to really help me to help me through it i know more than i need to know about menopause so what's your relationship i mean i you know people automatically assume you do gospel music that the relationship has to be perfect no so what do what how do you say that too fast no how do you deal with problems in a relationship like what what is the best way that you guys deal with problems who runs who who doesn't want to talk who likes to talk who likes i'm not i'm not i'm learning to become the talker but i have not always been the talker i'm doing a lot better now because i know that's what he needs for me it's for me to talk to him and let's talk through this thing i'm like person of one or two words and then you know i'm done with it but i've learned to add more just you know figure out something else to say yeah yeah well see for me i i do understand our relationship is not perfect what we are we're a work in progress right we're working progress that are figuring this out over 33 years we're like okay what works we do an evaluation every year we do an evaluation like job right you should go you should go and just go revisit your marriage vows just go and just like okay check on this okay we can work on this and that that if you go and look at that because you really you know doing them vows during the year you don't know what you're talking about when you're standing there like you say most weddings you don't know what you don't know what you're talking about you're tired you know it's like the day it's been trying to take your pictures [Music] i do yeah just have sex without repenting you don't have to repent no more but that's how we do it we understand that we're a work in progress and that's you know like i say i'm not trying to push it back to the album but that's why this album for both of us it is so personal it was the overcomer title it really means something to us because that's a nice powerful song it was awesome thank you i mean but it but it is because we all been we're doing a lot we've been working there and it's like i want my things to change around me but sometimes the change has to begin with you and but i'm willing and i know that we can overcome and we can conquer whatever those issues are and i mean right now mentally the world it's been it's been hitting a lot of us especially home even in our community that i've never seen as much mental illness things happening or maybe we just didn't know about it but i see it more in my community and people around me that i just know and that we all need some healing that we all need some help and you know and again that god is our source for us to get through these i think in the black church you know we're going to see a psychiatrist or therapist or something it's been bad it's been like that's a no-no right i'm here to say it's okay to have a therapist and jesus yes it is okay because a lot of times we shun that stuff right and you know i'm praying what i am praying is that the the lord gives the doctor wisdom enough to help me right and so a lot of times we just say nah i'm you know them demons no that's stuff you need to talk about that has happened to you in the past that you need to help need some work to get through so you guys have done therapy we i have i've i've gone i've gone because i'm a lot i'm a lot i haven't yet but i but i really do plan on going and talking to somebody because i feel like it's just good to have another outlet what about couples therapy yeah well we we haven't had it no but we've we've worked some people through it yes but we sit and we talk about everything and i mean we're the kind of people that it happens it could be two or three o'clock in the morning we laying in the bed and we just start having like a session just laying there talking about it and then there's times that we have actually prayed at that time of morning to just really because we want our relationship to work i want to work through this thing and i don't want to quit divorce is not an option we both put that out there that we're going to work through whatever we were dealing with and what was the toughest song to do on an album what was the toughest one to do the toughest song for me would been overcomer was because it was a whole different vibe for me and it was because it was like to me it's more hip-hop rockish yeah had a nice rock yeah but it's like after like sitting and listening to it it was like i'm not i'm going to conquer this i'm not going to let this take me over and go in here and have a panic attack you know she did and it was like okay i'm going to sit back up and let's let's go back and and give it another there was a couple days she was like i don't know about this but it but it happens but my thing is is i'm the type person is i'm willing to give it 100 right to make it to make it work so that that and hello god to me because they were totally different yeah those two signs straight away from the vibe you know the ballads that i'm used to that people used to hearing from me and that's what i'm trying to get people to understand is to hear me in another like give me an opportunity to give me a chance to just even for you to hear what i'm saying you know i know it's a god it's my faith is it yes it's all about my faith but the songs that we're singing are stuff that can really help you get through something you think i thought i would think he did it for me no because he did it for me as a ballad okay i thought i thought that was a tough one just because of the reasoning behind it yeah the reason that he did it for me for me on the album is i had a lot of people come to me and well actually my radio guy came back to me after i did an interview with someone and they was like well why is everything coming to her why is she getting tv why is music and stuff doing so well for her and it really pricked me because you know i grew up really poor and it's like i know what it means not to have and you know to go through without things and i was like the stuff that's happened for me you know was the favor i believe it was favor of god that happened for me and god did it right it was like he gave me the gift and i'm just giving back the gift to people to encourage other people and and i really i cried about it i really forget those beginnings too like even when you first went to go work with tyler perry you didn't have money like that no no we were scratching with i mean when we first met tyler david actually i didn't meet him david flew and met him with freaking floyd my frequent flyer man right i i wanted it that bad to go let's figure this out and i used my freaking flyer miles so you know that the song he did it for me is just it's just the testimony like hey our gifts and talents you guys didn't see this yeah what we went through in the beginning and now you know you can see it now so it didn't come easy don't discount it right you know now that we're here we had to go through some trucks some struggles and you know trials and even with our family you know being away from my kids traveling it's just a lot of things people see now but they don't understand my then that it took you know took it was a path it was a journey to get here but i'm just here to let people know even sitting here with you guys today that things can get better help is out there and you know help is on the way and it's going to get better you're right everything's not perfect right so was there ever a time in your marriage like what would you say was the toughest period for you guys to get through my sixth year of marriage i'll never forget it we was having some you know some rough a rough patch and i kept you know you know your first years of marriage you always say especially for women we always say i'm leaving i'm taking my kids and i'm going to remind you that's one of my biggest fears i'm going to be left alone i'm taking my kids and i'm going to my mama and then you know some things you know kept happening and you know it's just you know just disagreements because the thing about us honestly y'all not to make a perfect picture here but we've had more happy days than sad days we don't have that many arguments our arguments came from that time of the month honestly that's when we that's the real thing that's when we spat it you know or argued so we had an argument and i was you know i was mad and i was like i'm going and i'm going to take the kids no she said i'm going to take my kids and i'm going to go ahead so this time don't you need that though i'm going to talk about my kids my bedroom because you did because you did y'all did help get the kids out but did you let us be she did a majority of your dad y'all got to do the fun part to bring the kids here and then she did all the work well afterwards she got the baby here but i can i honestly don't need a woman to help me take care of it because he was good there that i can i can throw the baby up change the pack before it hit the ground yeah that's probably why women feel like my kids because you think about like most of them coming in you know just being in your body and then breastfeeding and well i nurtured just as much i hey give me the baby i'll take care of it breastfeed now i can't breath i had to get that one up that didn't last but i tried but i told him that i was going to leave he said you say that one more time i'm going to pack your stuff up and take you to your mama yeah i'll let you guys i think my wife would be like oh word do it i looked at him and i thought about where my mama lived where i lived and she lived in a one-bedroom house at the time and i was like where are me and my kids going to sleep you hear she's still saying me and my kids but i'm just saying that's what he asked but that was really the roughest thing and after he told me that y'all ain't said that no more i never said that that was the last time i would think the roughest was when the knock at the door i would think that was one well that was a rough one who knocked on the door that's when we we was here last time yeah one time we talked about the knock at the door i found out five years into our relationship that i had an additional child yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah that was one of those adventures that was rough because i told them [Music] but then once i explained to her it's us against the world it's you know at the end of the day like now our baby is 32. 31 our baby is 31 so we're empty nesters we're at home yeah 31. and so we're home by ourselves now so if we let that break us up early in our marriage we wouldn't be here living the dream yeah i feel like yeah uh i figured out your purpose yes i do and i think it really is i i keep saying it but we are sent here to be i know that i'm an encourager bottom line i mean even before all of this and a friend of mine texted me the other day guys and she was saying you remember we used to go we had this restaurant called ponchos we really wasn't making a whole lot of money but we were always trying to help somebody even before all of this and she said you remember y'all used to take me and my kids out and we was having problems i was having problems in my marriage and y'all was there for us and i just kind of got teary eyed and i was like man i was like i was like bae cause i called him bad i was like bae we was trying to help people when we didn't have nothing right and i believe that's why god has shown us favor and he did it for us you know and and so we'll still be able to help other people i think for me it's to bring joy to people because i used to you know in in our churches like you're anointed to sing you anointed to preach you anointed to this and i always thought well my anointing is not important i make people laugh and once i realize i'm anointed to make people laugh i'm anointed to bring joy to people that's my purpose is to uplift people and for a long time i was like well i can't sing like him or i can't speak like her i can't speak like him so my gift is not that important but i once i started to realize it's important that i make people laugh and bring joy especially at a time like one of my favorite things to do is go to a comedy show let me tell you there is nothing like that even during this pandemic the first time i really was out like amongst people was de chappelle when he was doing those comedy shows in yellow springs yeah and it that was great it just uplifts and that's that's what we're here to do that's what that's what this record comedy in music it just works in a different place to me because it really does bring a lot of joy to people yeah and you know music touches the soul when you don't even have to say anything it's like once you listen you can just tell by the reaction of whatever that music is especially us as a people you know you can have a little bopping i mean we you throw something i mean you know we just start moving with it like when you hear hello god yeah i intentionally played hello god and it was a you know somebody who wasn't a gospel fan or anything but i just turned it on for him and i just noticed he just started after a while he was just sitting i was like wow music is universal absolutely it's just you could not even speak a language and hear a song because i listen to music that's like i don't even know what they're saying right and if it sounds good it sounds good that's like michael jackson back in the day you go to those foreign countries they ain't know what he was saying but they were just like can we get can we get a joint on what what do you want to hear i want to hear hello god oh yeah is that what y'all wanna hear is that cool yeah that's cool i love it i love it but can you introduce it sure this is my one of the songs off of my overcoming record that i've teamed up with wycliffe john and kirk franklin producing it and uh it's a happy song it's called hello god all right well here it is hello god david and tamela man it's the breakfast club good morning [Music] you
