I love all those damn vents.

I like the vents on the engine cover. I like the vents on the hood. I like the vents near the back. And most of all I love the vents above the pop up headlamps. They're super cool and they really add to the styling.

I like those metal five spoke wheels. I like the prancing horse at rear being on the side instead of the middle.

I like those 2 per side 'parking lights'?? They remind me of the Jensen Interceptor and 80's BMW but square shaped instead of round, and they also threw on some rad pop up headlamps and some pretty cooling vents! Awesome!

This car just has a really wonderful look to it. Man I wish Ferrari would work with Pininfarina again. They had some amazing work together and I don't think Pininfarina can exist without Ferrari giving them consistent work. Just wow!

It still looks contemporary, it still looks modern.

No. Beautiful car, an icon, but no.

[Applause] Jay Leno's Garage oh it's fun to have automotive royalty here and this is right up there 1985 Ferrari GTO this is one of those legendary cars although legendary got a bit overshadowed by the f40 but they're just fantastic cars this belongs to our friend David Lee and this is car has won a number of concore events but he drives a long time I see him around town in it so I said hey we haven't done one of those why don't you bring on over David come on in hey again my friend hey yeah it's a great car yeah really really great uh it's one of my favourite cars there was a car in high school that I dreamed about you know open up road attracting fortune there's no more hearts that kind of magazines anymore but we opened it and I dream about it so Wow yeah a beautiful car I mean it's hard to believe it's 34 years old yeah yeah and this but this was obviously the GTO named legendary infer are the 50 GTO still to this day I think the most expensive car yeah ever sold at auction sure and when these came out it looks so much like the 308 I was thinking was that a 303 with a couple of performance ops but not true totally different yeah right exactly yeah they borrowed a lot of you know things from the 308 thinking would be just better and more efficient but then when they end up making the car they did a lot of things I mean the widen defenders they did you know different materials like space-age material at the time to make it lighter that boosts up the engine too you know with turbos and 400 horsepower so they ended up with a whole new car so it's a v8 with 2.8 liters or 0.8 yeah alright that's 288 GTO yeah and what is the horsepower on this car so so they boost it up to 400 horsepower okay yeah which is a lot for that time that was a lot for 1985 that was incredible because and the most powerful American car you could get I think at the time was the Corvette with 350 horsepower okay and 400 was one of those numbers I mean I've told the story number of times on the show but when I bought my Viper the guy said this guy got fallen or something you'll never see that again emissions and all that gas and that's what we thought was happening we thought emissions would just strangle everything once again if you like me you believe engineers will change the world and now you have cars with 911 but still this is pretty quick and it's pretty light yeah it's 2,500 pounds the 308 was 800 pounds more so they were able to bring it down on the weight so it cooks I mean 0-60 at that time five five seconds but remember the five-second was like was like wow that was fast yeah well when I was a kid the fastest car you get was the Hemi Belvedere satellite in 66 and that was zero to 60 and 6.3 and I remember looking at can't be right now you get your doors blown off by GPI right right but it's all about how it makes you feel I mean I love the non airbag steering wheel I love the proper gear shift lever that's gated it's not an automatic it's not a paddle shift it's the last of the that sort of error of analog cars in there it's so it's a beautiful car and yet I guess the f40 is being developed for this was out this is only made what five four years yeah yeah there was it was made in 84 to 87 so how so and how many did they build you know 272 why that number well first when they built this car they wanted to build it for the grupe racing situation and they had to make 200 cars allocated to do that and then when they cancelled the group because it was too dangerous they left to say well maybe we'll just make it into road cars now so they ended up to 72 and what did this car cost brand-new and 84 it was like a hundred grand remember a hundred grand though like in the grand well i remember watching the 60 Minutes when they did a thing on the Lamborghini Countach and Morley Safer said now if you think this is an ad for Lamborghini not really because they're all sold out in this car sells for 100 yeah well you know the funny thing is those singers we're used to sing about the cars about $100,000 cars and everything like that like that's a big deal now you listen to that song you'd be like no that's it and you know it still looks contemporary it still looks modern I mean Countach is look like the 80s mm-hmm I mean whereas this could be any error if you want a Ferrari aficionado you'd think this was a new car a fairly new car yeah you know what surprises me is this emblem just how big it is because I remember in the old days if you didn't know it was Ferrari well that's your formula might have set it on there be some badging but here it's right here like okay this is it was it a popular car when you know it's so funny because when it came out I don't know where there got overshadowed by other cars but I just wasn't aware of it in period I mean I just thought it was a 308 right with a few more horsepower you know thought it up a bit I just realize it was totally different yeah yeah I think cuz there wasn't such a different car it would it kind of looked like three away people didn't understand they kind of passed it off people that really I mean I knew and I thought I knew a special car but it really were enthusiasts but then when the f40 came I was a totally different looking car so obviously four-wheel disc brakes now it is what a five-speed yes five-speed okay okay obviously for always on transmission and nicely designed you know by this period they were able to come up with impact bumpers that didn't look at it on is this an American spec car or was it a world spec car oh it was a world spec car yeah I was able to I don't think there was any American spec cars right people brought it over they had to put the smog stuff on there luckily I was able to get after 25 years where I didn't meet that Oh so you couldn't have bought this in 1985 in America no you couldn't well yeah that's probably why I was not aware of didn't pay attention we couldn't get here right right exactly very exactly can we open up the engine cover okay so uh okay we'd do this I'm right there right your help on that so funny that it opens this way yes I'm just expecting to open the other way okay well then there's a little yeah out of there they can you put it in that hole right down there yeah the legendary stick there you go well that's impressive basically the same block as the 308 is okay all right two turbos like in the lowers yep it's quick though when it when it when it kicks in you got that turbo lag and boom yeah you know I like that one too boom all right and step one two it goes you know and you sort of learn to go into a corner and how to do that yeah very nice yeah I mean it still looks classic Ferrari and the engine compartments are really starting to get complicated in the eighties but it it's still fun that you can identify everything you know monocoque open there's a big sheet of plastic and you can't see anything so well it's got to be tricky to work on and your engine is way down in there I know I think that's why it was so expensive to to maintain to these cars back then because they had to take the whole engine out in order to to do it I mean I go to another stuff you take out the seats and go in through the back there yeah you do it's like going a proctologist for dental that really I mean you can't you can't reach anything or they used the into coolers to take into their space where they would have had a kind of a trunk space all right they were able to do all this there is no trunk space in this well there's in the front I guess you have a little area there like a toothbrush okay Wow pretty impressive but this is cars right between the 250 GTO and the f40 I mean it's really has good Providence you know it's a rare car I mean that's a really low production number for yeah I mean I don't think they make 200 of 272 of anything everything now is at least a thousand yeah Wow super rare it was the hardest one to get out of the big five that I have it was the hardest one to find either find this in Italy you know from a doctor that had owned it for long time he drove it around and and because it went up so much in value think I had wanted to sell it and when the call was getting loaded he was crying like he really missed our yeah it's funny because this was not crazy desirable and I mean desirable as every Ferrari is but when the f40 came out oh my god the anticipation and just people going crazy the greatest car ever you know all this kind of thing it's just sort of overshadowed this and that was probably the time to buy one of these well yeah it was reasonable I'd like to get your take on because you did drive my f40 for a show before you know I loved that effort it was my favorite Ferrari because it was the closest thing in the feel to the vintage Ferraris from the 60s you know proper gearbox you had to sort of manhandle it a little bit a little bit a lot of clutch pressure I mean if you felt like you were driving a car it was very visceral you know so that it was exciting when those twin turbos would kick in and yeah that was really something yeah I would love to hear how you feel the difference between well I will we will find out in a minute and put this down okay and these like you say have gone crazy ah yeah yeah they're like three three million I mean - oh very low Mar 1 and so yes we're gonna have mileage how many miles in this one Oh 10,000 kilometers ok so that's very low for you know 19 it is it is and it's weird that you have something and you don't want to use it because the value yeah but I don't know but to me they're eminently rebuildable I mean the car will always be a multi-million dollar car seems like you could always fix whatever wears out I mean well I have the same philosophy for me I don't care I just drive right yeah yeah exactly and of course the classic Ferrari interior I love those seats with the holes yeah these are Daytona Saturn and of course the gated shifter obviously is not as fast as paddle ships but boy it's just nice to go through this so much more fun and those legendary leathers GTO which across Pontiac appropriated back over they had the Pontiac GTO versus the Rory GTO and all like yeah yeah like you're gonna which one do I want to get the pot oh okay beautiful very simple let's open up the front I want to take a look at that we got a little bit of trunk room in there yeah AJ I got a little gift for you you know I know you're into wearing socks and stuff but you know because I like the breeze on my ankle but this is a good compromise you know it's like socks you can wear it and but yet you don't see it on your ankles it looks like it's so it looks like you have no son exactly but you village my people can come the people had so these are like half socks these are like yeah yeah they they all you know I don't get in the ladies hosiery Department right so I don't really get a chance to see these you might enjoy the breeze yeah yeah where these all get beat up at the next car show put it back in this protective cover here really was a foot shape like that well thank you doing this is lovely okay yeah I'm gonna give that a try this way people think I'm not wearing right and as you know looking good is important I always try to dress as I can so oh my god mister oh yeah I have a standard black okay wait I'm not wearing socks I just have gangrene all right well let me just put these right back all right now well good let's get back to New York matter at hand here sure closest now beautiful and these are obviously air extractors for the brakes or what notice and of course the pop-up headlights classic yeah in the 80s that was so cool but no look at let's pop up in exactly no it's just a fantastic looking car but the whole thing to a Ferrari is obviously driving it can we take this respect yeah let's take it for a spin okay the rooms okay huh he'd get into this okay oh yeah you know one of your room I'll I got a bunch stiff clutch in there yeah a very civilized pilot he came on he described this almost that cushions [Music] and it feels small even modern small cars feel big committee is not anything the like of me waitress warm-up let's go the - boy you got the classic home is really kind of cool right this your phenomena right here goes up to all kilometres ago on this side water temperature oil temperature and a car together cause you're pointing out the old yeah Brady I'm gonna you take the faceplate with you yeah that was like a big deal I know even people are feeling your when you park go to the mall you pull it out everybody has a little like that little Philip turbos can write their adjustments everywhere and they got a do manual we got a hold it man they're like you gotta push them too which inside to mutiny very high for the [Applause] brakes are quite good actually and this has all the amenities doesn't air-conditioning oh yeah and radio all stuff the f40 well they have 40 out here they had air-conditioned didn't have radio what was your first Ferrari well I first married for first Ferrara was a 355 speed a spider right and then I had the 360 and at 4:30 then then I was I didn't want to buy itself car to lose money again so I thought I'd buy my one that doesn't and the first one was Wow and then I started to hey why don't I collect the rest of the supercars got the forty part is fun to get with the 288 GTO which this one here was the heart of this was artist get cousin older it is a part of the pine right and like we said a lot of them were in Europe good one and did you fly to Europe to look at this car first you buy it based on the guys for so I sent my my guy it's an Andy over that it thought of anything which is good then and then he told me but this was the one in high school that was proving about at that time I would never think yeah yeah I mean I mean how about you J like when you through the magazines all these great cars and you know you've never thought you know God no I was in fact when I was in then I was a kid guidance counselor called my mother in school and said that my mom take it take it J out of school we know the small education that was working at McDonald's a wonderful program kids - amber you know I never the that's why I worked at car dealership I worked it but women can Ford all over that and then I worked at a place called barn motors again what they call foreign motor or motor you know back in those days most Europeans couldn't afford to have a stand-alone dealership so we sold Mercedes Benz Bentley Rolls Royce Citroen Pujo just a whole bunch alone and that's what that that's the way you did it Bakula and then when you start first getting cuff like the nice cars like the cars of your dreams and right you know car bought eighty-three Mercedes 300 turbo diesel because that's the only car Mercedes can sell in America that okay because it's telling us and then I bought an 88 89 yeah which at that time was the fastest four-door car you could buy in America like how far we've come yeah but it is a wonderful feeling something too you know we had a childhood dream about the amazing I've given three always yeah and this is 800 pounds lighter three oh yeah with really twice the hospital respect into 308 for what maybe 200 water hard right something like where is this it's 400 yeah the wheels are wider they're good on food year they may declare that out five Wow Oh pink it's not making a lot of noise yeah you know Ferrari on the modern cars just started putting out the 418 like the twin fits a twin turbo and some people are like wow how excited that the Ferrari actually had purple thirty years ago 30 years ago that new villegas I think the most powerful engine yeah it is so how does this feel compared to the 40 that you go it was a bit more five horses [Applause] I'm just like a manual here nice bellows turbos once you've got an 8000 rpm redline then the fight is like through enough and I get a little nervous like I don't care I'll Drive it not as often but these these things weird to think that a bass Corvette now that for horsepower this prior you can buy you helped a bass Wow this car must have been very expensive to run in Italy anything over what 2.7 liter is like crazy crazy money yeah people wouldn't drive them to a certain models because they would have to they're afraid they would have to pay for the take out the engine maintenance guys I was really expensive so they always took people over miles for that that doesn't really work either cuz it's time soon yeah [Music] building up 40 came out this one yeah and it went about a 189 miles per hour for this this this guy came out it was the first supercar the portrait comes out at the 959 you know that that's all kind of crazy and it was fast too and then Enzo had to come out with the important week under my power and watch our car on the road so it was a little bit of a rivalry food for all you to push it yeah I just took apart funny thing at once I've been praying speak dollars break they used to pretend at the cottage good and then your games even clearing up on him 230 yeah normally aspirated over the I believe it still the fan I'm hikers Iran do they'll tell me to calm weather you Jersey on somebody yeah yeah but they say there's a good gentleman for like uncomfortable yeah so that the power steering is writing the rag Rises no it and you got the nice yeah a lot of people cuts within Pablo with the curb didn't expect you to know how to handle it yeah the crash but this is very like rare among all the their forties around the others Janelle's servers office yet where you brought it over you yeah it was like some $8,000 make $10,000 easily amazing how any older supercar can hold a candle amazing when I get at some of the bottom cars like you can Ferraris like a superclass jet planes and from who would have thought a thousand horsepower that's crazy possible one Corvette 725 before always coming out with a thousand horsepower mid-engine that's all a what David thank you very much is the experience of a lifetime you bring all the real Ferrari I think the cars we can never get to drive and you're always very kind to drink I love the fact that you use them all I think that's fantastic they don't sit locked away somewhere the fact that you use them means they're somebody that repairs up me that somebody is working and you know if the knowledge keeps getting passed on you know which is fun you know I always talk about my Duesenberg that I love to drive I mean other news of our donors and they don't drive them so that guys are fixed I've gotten to work so they move on to something else the knowledge gets long yeah fact if you're out there you see what a several contest is for Ferrari it's one of those transitions probably although the f40 is the last you analog this was probably one of the last now the proper gear baak but it's got air and leather and all the accessories electric windows and stuff it's really the most simple idea David thank you my friend yeah yeah they always learn a lot when I tried with you well we learned a lot from you we can check you out on it yeah it's a Ferrari collector underscore David Lee there you go check it out all right thanks even the hand [Music]
