And you have Conan O'Brien who blew $1 Million of NBC's money to play the Rolling Stones' "I can't get no satisfaction" just to spite the network.

It's practices like this by bands like The Eagles (whose music I actually like, btw) that causes the public to have very little sympathy for artists in royalty disputes with companies like Spotify. Now, I know it's not the big artists that are being hurt by Spotify, but they (and mostly their labels) are causing a tremendous roadblock for other artists that are in a position that they once were.

Cutting off their noses to spite their collective faces

I miss him looking down on his guests. I loved how he didn't give a fuck and made certain airhead guests ridiculous.

I always thought you would only have to license the music if you played the track, not if a different band covered it live. Otherwise cover bands would never exist.

now I was hoping here's a little behind-the-scenes showbiz data that you may or may not be aware of I was hoping we'd get to hear eagles music yeah because I'm going to the concert with this guy's wife on Saturday night that's great he's be back in New Jersey getting drunk with his buddies and so I thought maybe we would hear a lot of eagles music but I'm told now by Dan Federer that it's too expensive do you know anything about that poem yeah yeah I know how expensive is too expensive well like it like how much what are we talking about well I don't know it's like every time we like it we play one song what's the one song one song probably like $1,000 alright pick your favorite Eagle song and we'll hear how much is it I can't I can't hear a word you're saying no who said who are the licensing people Paul I'm guide licensee Mississippi somebody who works for you I guess someone who owns the Eagles music then it's not the eagle mm MRI or BMI oh I'd like to have one of those cards you ever driven a BMI beautiful arrived I had one in California cornered like us taking a rathole so so if we play an eagle song we'll get sued is that correct they don't they just don't want to say just said no but what if what if they knew about Leslie for Minnesota I don't think they make exceptions they have a flat no policy for television you still want to go Leslie boy I just I'm just I'm just dying Paul aren't you now just really dying to play Anita wish I could play it some Eagles song unfortunately ask too much I think it cost yes is there a minimum can we play like three bars of a song can't even do that what yes bill you know what were you gonna say bill bill well when I well get out of try a license it's under four lines do three lines of the song three lines of a song is there anyone awake in the control room could I speak could I speak to someone in the control room hello hello it's Dave got the controller oh hi Jerry how are you great well I thought you went home early on Thursdays not just sit though all right Jerry help us out here we're having a little argument about eagles licensing rights and such what do you say you're the director you're the captain of the ship what do you think yeah that's the best thing I've heard all summer now okay Paul let's talk it over what would you play we got one shot here we're gonna do one one yeah and see what happens what is so what will it be from the Eagles songbook and recognize that we're on the precipice of legal action well I I mean I I love life in the fast lane but you're the one who's going to be paying so I you should really pick life in the fast lane would probably would not be the one I would pick okay Hotel California probably not be the one I would pick what would will leasing and take it to the limit with that's a good one yeah I don't know I don't I I'm gonna have to excuse myself or somebody maybe we can do a certain amount of life in the fast lane without without having to pay do you want to hear just the know I don't I don't want to hear why you won't have to pay no no I I don't care I don't want three no I I have a feeling if we start paying it they'll shut down the show right now okay so let's pick something else all right take your things into the living to take it easy we've all heard a good deal yeah too many times yeah too many times you know what I'm not that interested anymore all right we'll keep talking about it we'll be right back with Mindy Kaling ladies and gentlemen this is great this is this is I have here the drop-dead list of music we're not allowed to play or we'll get sued now interestingly enough at the top of the list Jimi Hendrix yeah but but I've heard you play all along the watchtower but that's a Bob Dylan song is that how that works Wow but we play some of his too you know we do yeah you know this has absolutely no Jimmy and replying all the time I mean is life worth living yeah if you can't have Jimi Hendrix for the love of God it's a good thing we play it all night nobody's ever said don't play Bruce Springsteen can't play born brown can't play born to run can't play born to run with it he'll let us play yeah that's right there's a few you can play ten thousand new freeze-out yeah you can play glory days Thunder Road and dancing in the dark well that's at least you could play those yeah so we could must be we could play a few hundred sexy yeah well no it says no hand no no play it says no play Bruce Springsteen and Jimmy and Ricardo now what we've come up with is I think as a reasonable compromise and we're trying to work this through okay know the song I can't tell you why oh that's great yeah yeah now not an Eagles song strictly speaking I'm asking why not I think it is you think it is do you think it is no you don't think I understand they wrote it no they wrote it yeah I think they wrote I can't tell you why what do you say bill well bill yeah I thought he released it as a single to Newseum Timothy and their bass player bass player okay Oh Eagle like we were so close it's not can we blame earth Irving Azoff for this and I think you could pretty much blame anything on on urban area okay all right yeah the important thing is we found someone to take them yeah okay also Billy Julie you got to be careful with Billy Joel can't play any Billy Joel Sam cook why are you kidding we know a plant can't play Sam cook Disney carrots of the Caribbean you can't play any of that Jerry or Dubai or anything by Jerry Bruckheimer or Pixar unless someone is on promoting a film all right sea captain & Tennille let's see do we but I'll tell you something and I don't know if I'm supposed to say this or not but for the Eagles music you know what they want if we can play it but you know what it'll cost us for one song one song take a guess more it must got to be more than a thousand that oh yeah is it $5,000 more than five really just for like and I that was like 100 bucks be careful there's a hundred bucks right there cuz I I don't I don't have that gun I don't have a don't have I don't have it on me no well back at the suite you got it I got it back in the county then I don't 10 thousand dollars and for I can't tell you what a boarded up up up hundred thousand up up up up this serving a huh this guy is in trouble yeah yeah now now if everybody here wants a kick in some money so you'll need half a million half a million dollars half of half a million really a quarter of a million dollars to player I can't tell you why right show right now if you people want to lect an audience captain and during the rest of the show contribute whatever you can that gets us close to a quarter of a million then then we take off the reserve we're going to lift the reserve yeah it's only $500 apiece I really want to get to the bottom of this Eagles thing mm-hmm I'm how to where do we stand now we can't we can't afford it yeah big big show like yours yeah you could afford it could we afford it I don't know I think the Eagles are tough I don't want that price I think Hotel California we wanted to play yeah and then you could get away with it you'd probably have to take a pay cut that week would you this is why CBS is the most watched television network in the world they got tired of the Eagles saying no no no it's gonna cost you a million no nine also what they did was they commissioned a song called supercharger supercharger yes an instrumental it's called supercharged supercharger which is a knockoff of life in the fast lane okay so so we're now going to listen to the CBS commissioned supercharged this weekend this wheel with yeah and we'll see if it comes close okay to like it will be exactly the same this won't cost us a penny am I right about those are absolutely absolutely okay let's take it away here we go pitch our super charger you make super charger charger huh well I wonder if they'll be playing super charger at the Garden Saturday night
