Go! ♪ ♪ Police! Police! (Byas) I used to be a sniper before switching to a negotiator five or six years ago. I still enjoy sniping. Even though I'm negotiating, I have to maintain all my skills and be able Ito fulfill any role,. whether it's sniping, negotiating, or entry. They're all off. I've got three I'm not real happy with. Given the situation, if this was a head, obviously, my target would've been eliminated. However, for training purposes, it's not sufficient enough. It needs to be better. Full-time snipers would come out, and they'd probably razz me a little bit. Every time I come out to the range here, I get a little nostalgic. About seven years ago, I found a dog out here, which I took home. His name was Ranger. That's Ranger on this side here. It's been about three months ago, I actually ended up losing him to kidney failure. So it's kind of like a little sacred place for me. [pager beeping] 80-64, I'll be en route. (Gordon) Apparently, a D.A. was trying to serve an arrest warrant on a suspect, attempted to stop him. He apparently rammed a D.A. vehicle. A short chase ensued. The suspect then got out of the vehicle into his friend's house, and supposedly he's armed inside the friend's house with an AK-47 and a shotgun. Okay. (man) Known to have weapons. But, yeah, he's aggravated everything now. We have a suspect that ran from DEA agents. He ran into a friend's house that is also, apparently, associated with drugs and is incarcerated at this time. I didn't see it. On that brick wall? You mean over here? Is this a window or a door? I'm not sure. Anybody know? Yes, sir. [man on radio] Roger that. Okay, we got a dog. Got it. All right. You're going to loudhail? This is the guy. He has a violent history, lots of drugs. Denton County Sheriff ran on this house before, Jamaican blocks, machine gun, 12-gauge, all that. He does not live there. His buddy lives there. His buddy is already in jail. (Guzman) That's all I need for loudhailing. Any other info, pass it on to me through my BlackBerry. BlackBerry, okay. (Byas) Tell T we'll be ready to go in one second, Boo Boo's getting ready to loudhail. (man) All right, combat coming up. Close enough. Our row's going to be on the entry team. I'll be on the entry sale going inside the location. [Guzman on loudspeaker] In this case, it'd probably be a better scenario if the suspect comes out and surrender as opposed to us going in there and getting him, because our intel tells us he could possibly have access to a shotgun, an AK-47. [Guzman on loudspeaker] Huh? No, I'm ready to call. (man) Are you ready to call? Yeah. Now we're attempting to call and see if we can make contact with him. [line ringing] Everyone thinks that SWAT is about guns and explosions d such. Ironically though, the vast majority or our barricaded persons are settled through negotiations. [Guzman on loudspeaker] Answer your telephone. 8-5-2 to 8-6-4, we're not hearing a phone out here or anything. We're calling, but yet they're not hearing-- they're not hearing the phone inside, their perimeter team isn't. We hope we have the right phone number. Really? And I can reach you at this number? I'll call you back in just a minute or so. She didn't have very good news for me now. The girlfriend's over there crying, saying he's going to kill us. Okay. (Lancaster) Someone that knows the suspect said that he said he will not go back to prison, that he will shoot it out with the police. We know for sure there is an attic, and we know for sure there's a crawl space. There's a good chance that, most likely, he'll pick one of those two to go to. That's our past experience. That may be a reason why he's not making any contact. 8-8-80 to 8-2-6 and 8-4-3, deploy six ferret rounds into the annex. Keith, one of our snipers, is on an adjacent house. He's got the multi-launcher. He's going to try to induce chemical agents into the residence. This is our multi-launcher. It shoots a multitude of rounds, everything from gas to less lethal. On barricaded persons, we use this tool quite a bit. It fires six rounds in a row. The handpump in the front cycles the next round. Squeeze the trigger, and there's your next round ready to go. Most folks, you give them a snoot full of this stuff, it takes the fight out of them. [gunshots] (Gordon) The place is full of gas right now. The suspect hasn't come out yet. [Guzman on loudspeaker] No one has been hurt up to this point. You need to make the right choice. Come to the front door, and no one will be hurt. You need to come to the front door, and you need to come out now. At this point, we did everything we could do except make entry, go in, and arrest the suspect, so that's what we're going to try to do right now. What we're got to do is pull the door off of the garage, 'cause we believe the gas could've flushed him in there. (Lancaster) With him knowing we're this close and we're out here, there's no telling. Could be trying to set up an ambush for the team. [Guzman on loudspeaker] This is the Dallas Police Department SWAT team. We have a suspect that ran from DEA agents. We did everything we could do except make entry, so that's what we're going to do right now. (man #1) Okay, hold it, hold it. (man #2) No, we're not going in. Clear from the outside. (man #3) They won't let us go in, Dre, just clear from the outside. (man #2) You said we can't go in. (man #4) All clear on this side. (Gordon) We're going to make entry through the side door. Our intel tells us that a warrant was executed on this house in which they went through the front door. We're thinking it'd be a little safer for our entry team if we went through the side door this time. (Byas) We know that he wants to fight it out. (man) Everybody be on their toes. Yes! [men yelling] (man) Coming up, I'm coming up. Do not move! (Lancaster) He had put mattresses on top of himself, and he had a board on top of that. And he was laying just perfect. Even when they moved the mattress, he didn't move. I guess he didn't think they saw him. He's been there for hours. I know he has. He's just laying there. Is there anyone else inside? No, sir. Huh? No, sir. There's no one else inside? No, sir, that I'm-- Nowhere? Nowhere. (Morgan) This shotgun was found inside the house fully loaded, ready to fire. Probably because of the gas, he wasn't able to get to it, or didn't have the will to use it. (Gordon) Had to be slow and methodical on this one, 'cause the suspect had the advantage. He knew where he was, and he knew where we were. (Vancuren) He was hiding in the very last room we searched underneath a bed, and he complied. And we put him in custody, so it turned out well. Nobody got hurt. Although it being very long, it was successful. (man) Hey, Hector. (Gordon) Going to go home to my wife and kids. I know she's been calling me and calling me. Get 8-0-2. (man) Want to get some gas? Yeah, get some gas, apprise him of the situation. We won't take that long on the dog though. (Byas) Come on. [making kissing noises] [dog barking] My negotiation skills have not worked. He just doesn't want to listen. [dog barking] I've called animal control, however, they're not working right now, so we will have to figure other means of how to extract him. (Claggett) Today we're starting our shift with a workout. It's great for three reasons: One is, it keeps us fit, which we need to have. It's great for a stress reliever, which everybody needs in this job. And thirdly is, it's great for the comradery. I'm still using them, but thanks, Scott. It's one of the few times that we can all come together. We talk about everything from politics to relationships, caring relationships. Steve, you want to talk about those? He hates everybody, okay. There you go. So today we're going to have a unique opportunity where A unit and E unit, our sister unit, are going to come together for a couple of warrants. Doesn't happen often, but when it does, it generally calls for a large operation. And we've got that gig going on later today. This is going to be a simul-hit. A and E unit will be doing it. We're going to have one apartment, and it's kind of-- they're small apartments, but it's a little difficult because some of the things that we're going to be doing, some of our tactics, might compromise A unit, and we're trying to avoid that. Today we're going to execute a couple of narcotic warrants simultaneously between A and E unit. They're going to pick one house. We're going to pick the other one. (man) This house is being supplied by this house, we believe. When I went in and made my buy originally-- older gentleman, about 40, 45 years of age, 6-foot-tall, sold to me in here. In 703, there's a lady in there. She's about 5'8", probably 250 pounds, 35, 40 years old. The challenge here is to get everything working at the same time. We're driving up in four different vehicles, two APCs and two vans. On this perimeter, when you're on that perimeter, I know I talk about it all the time, but actively seek out threats. If shots are fired, A unit will be operating off of channel 12. E unit will be operating off of channel 8, okay? Okay. All right, we're good. Thanks, Chief. (Vancuren) There are two duplexes. They're allegedly selling crack. (Gordon) Neighborhood's pretty active. We ran several search warrants there before. I'm not sure if they're armed or not, but, you know, where there's dope houses and where there's dope, there's usually guns. We're going to hit both of them at the same time because narcotics have a warrant for both locations. (Claggett) The difficulty comes in the simultaneous aspect of it. We could be compromised on one if we arrive at the other one too soon. It'll be a new adventure for us. You ready to roll? (man) Come on in. There's, like, ten of us getting over there. (Claggett) We have twice the amount of manpower going on this operation. (all) 1, 2, 3, E unit. (Claggett) The more manpower you have, the harder it is to control. You have twice as much that can go wrong. You have twice as much people than can be hurt. (Gordon) Worse-case scenario if the guy, when we're standing in front of the door, starts to shoot through the door, which is a scenario we had a couple months ago when the four officers got shot, so that's worse-case scenario. You ready, V? (man) Benny, you ready? (all) We're up. (man #1) Let's go. (man #2) Squeeze them by. Go left, Scott. Second right, we're there. Not this one, the next one. We're looking at the back of the units right here. There it is. Right there's the back of the units. (Claggett) E unit, that's yours there, guys. (man) Hold on, hold on. Hold on, hold on. (man) They're up in it. Go, go, go, go. Today we're going to execute a couple of narcotic warrants simultaneously between A and E unit. This is E unit's target. That's our target. (Claggett) E unit's basically going to roll up first. We're going to be off their flank and driving past their target to hit ours. There it is. (Claggett) E unit, that's yours there, guys. Which unit? (man) Hold on, hold on. They're up in it. Go, go, go. (man #1) Police! (man #2) Let us through, eh? [glass shattering] [men yelling] [explosion] (Claggett) Get on the ground. Get on the ground! Move, move, move, move, move. (man) Hands on the back of your head now. Stay down. Stay down, don't move. I need you back-to-back, back-to-back. Don't move, don't move. (man) To your left, to your left! (Vancuren) We're going to need more up. (man #1) Help me out? (man #2) Clear. Stand by on front door. Secondary's good. I didn't shake this cat at all. We came around the corner. One of the suspects was standing in the doorway when we came around. I don't know how he didn't see us, but he didn't. Walking out delta. (man) Bring him all the way to the alpha side. (Vancuren) That was good. There was quite a few people in there. Everything went as planned. (man) Got one walking. Hey, did Misty search her? (woman) I think somebody did something. (Claggett) You guys, do me a favor. Take that guy, since he's from that location, put him over here away from our guys. We want the different suspects from the different locations separate from each other. That way, they're easier to identify. 'Cause we've got to be able to put them in rooms where the dope is found. That's the affirmative link that we've got to have to put these people in jail. Everything go all right down there, T? (Gordon) I was supposed to pry, but he tugged, it came open, so I dropped the pry and just waited. I don't think our arrival jeopardized the other entry team at all. (Claggett) I think the coordination between the two houses, it was perfect. We didn't hear bangs until we were actually going to the door there. Had we had to breach our doors, it might have been a little bit different, but with an open door, the timing was great. We didn't find anything in there, so... This is Beauford. Beauford's nine. He's my boy. Come here. Come here. Sit. I've had Beauford for nine years, and out of those nine years, you know, I had Ranger for at least five or six. Yes, I do have my dogs dressed up for Halloween. Every year, they get a different costume. And, of course, they hate it. But we dress them up just for a while to go around, and they get doggie treats. And that's their way of Halloween. Ranger, he was a duck that day. That was his first costume. Yeah. Beauford, he's been used to having somebody around, and so have I. And when we lost Ranger, I thought about looking for another dog. I think he'd like to have someone to hang out with while I'm at work. So we might go look for-- or see what we're going to do. Our page is telling me that our suspect, apparently she has shot-- she shot her husband. Where is the house? Okay. If she's got a gun, then we're going to have to set-- where are they setting up the command post? Hello, ma'am. How are you doing? My name is J.D. I'm one of the negotiators, okay? What can you tell me about what happened today? Does she have any medical problems? None? No mental health problems, nothing like that? Okay. Do you know what kind of gun it was? (man) It's a .38 Smith & Wesson. .38 revolver? (man) Revolver. Michael, y'all didn't hear any gunshots or anything after-- No. (Byas) The suspect is a 54-year-old woman, and she is locked up in the bedroom with a gun. She just came in and said, "I'm going to my bedroom now." And she was really upset. So they actually saw her go in the bedroom? Yes. Okay. (Gordon) There's a guy right now laying in the front yard. Paramedics already pronounced him dead. If she'd shoot and kill one person, it wouldn't be much for her to try to shoot and kill us. So that's a big risk. Ready? Okay. (Byas) We've got a woman caught up in a situation here. Definitely sounds like some self-defense may have occurred. [line rings] Obviously, I'm really hoping for a good outcome. [line rings] [beep] This is Jake with the Dallas Police Department. If you're there, pick up the phone and talk to me. I want to make sure that you're okay. Please pick up the phone. I understand that you've been through a lot, and I just want to talk to you. (man) Go ahead, 8-80. (Byas) All I can do is tell T that I'm not getting anything. The longer we get no communication, the worse it can lead to. I've got your mom and your dad here. They're all worried about you. Please, I'm begging you to pick up the phone and talk to me. You can just pick up the phone and hang it up if you want. Just tell me your side of the story. I'm not going to trick you. If you-- [phone clicks] Okay, that was a different kind of click. (Byas) Looks like I have a BP where a suspect has barricaded herself inside of a house. She shot her husband. (Gordon) If she'd shoot and kill one person, it wouldn't be much for her to try to shoot and kill us. Right now, we're trying to contact her by phone. (Byas) I'm not going to trick you. If you-- [phone clicks] Okay, that was a different kind of click. (man) We use the APC or just the shield? (Lee) We're using the APC. (man) APC, okay. If you pull the APC up blocking B2, then she can be on the wall, the brick wall, and I can-- That's true. (Gordon) We're going to approach the house using the APC as cover. We're going to do a port and cover on the window, 'cause we believe that's where she is. That's her bedroom window. (man #1) Five feet till drop off. (man #2) This is the Dallas Police Department. We got a light on in the B2. It's a pull-down shade, not a Levolor. (man) Pull-down shade. So it'll be easy to clear. You ready? (man) Let me know when to stop. Hang on, hang on. Stop, stop. [man on loudspeaker] We're not going anywhere. We need you to come outside and surrender. (man) Everyone ready? [man on loudspeaker] We understand you were involved in a serious incident earlier tonight. Let's not make it any worse. [glass shattering] (Byas) They were able to breach one of the windows and apparently she'd killed herself, so... (Gordon) Sometimes, you know, being in SWAT and being a police officer, you get desensitized to some things. But, you know, even some things touch us, 'cause it's just the despair people must be in to do these type acts. It's a bad deal. (Byas) Based on the severity of the alleged crime involved, what she's been through, it's kind of like we're in a no-win situation on some of these when we get here. I feel bad for the individual and for the families and for everyone involved, but I can't get tied up in it. I don't let this stuff bother me. Let me rephrase. I try not to let it bother me, you know, because I have to be ready for the next one. (Gordon) Last night, we had a tragic situation where it was a murder/suicide. And today, we're executing a search warrant, so that's SWAT. You never know what's going on from day to day, and what you're going to be doing. The area in which the target house is had the highest murder rate in Dallas a couple years ago. The neighborhood is pretty used to police presence. Going to have a bunch of good eyes out there, so hopefully they won't compromise our operation. (Lee) Detective, could you come up and give us what information you have on this? (man) I bought, like, a half ounce of crack cocaine from this house. I had three John Doe warrants. One actually sits guard on the blanket so nobody goes back there. (Lee) Would you say that he's about right here, the security guard guy? (man) Yeah, it's about right here. And another individual sits here and works the door. And then the guy that actually cuts it, and he'll let us look at the weight before we purchase it. To go in the living area, there's a blanket covering the entrance. So we don't know anything about this other than that they're keeping the dope in here, and they're weighing it right here. (Gordon) The danger on this one is, we don't have any intel. Narcotics officer only got as far as the kitchen, so he knows what the kitchen looks like, but that's about it. We'll go through this chain-link fence, and we'll go to the back. (Gordon) It's important that we get in the back door because, basically, that's where the suspects are. So it's important to get there with some speed and surprise so maybe we can get the suspects before they have a chance to arm themselves. All right, let's do it. (Byas) The undercover officers have been inside. They were only allowed inside the kitchen. So with only having limited access, that puts us in the blind. It's always a dangerous situation around a warrant because you have no earthly idea how the guy's going to react on the inside. A lot of times, the drug dealers, they think they may get robbed, or they may not know it's us. Sometimes they know it's us and shoot at us anyway, so... My role is going to be going in on the entry team. Being on the entry team is pretty exciting. Exciting of course, going in the house. When you go in the house, the suspects and everybody seems to move in slow motion, and you can preact because everything starts to slow down. One minute out. Left turn. Lot of people across the street. Area in which the house, our target house, is had the highest murder rate in Dallas a couple years ago. I know I keep saying this, but actively seek out threats in that neighborhood because a lot of unfriendlies over there. (man #1) A right turn coming up. (man #2) Right turn coming up. Don't move, sir, don't move. Do not move. (Vancuren) Give me more, give me more. There you go. It's all I can do. Not enough room. (man #1) Watch out. (man #2) Go, Duane! [people screaming] Pull! (man) Police! Show your hands! Everyone show me your hands! (man #2) All of them are coming around. Go, go, let's go! Let's go! (man) One up, one up, one up! One up! (man #2) Get back. Clear. That's the back door. Got one walking. (Gordon) We found two suspects in the rear also two suspects outside. We'll keep him separate from the inside guys. (man) Open the door; they're opening the door, Misty. (Vancuren) I hear them, I hear them. Police, police. No, I couldn't get in there 'cause, see, there's not enough room to-- and the door is so close. Practice it with the door shut to see how it would-- It's too long with the door shut. You can't maneuver it sideways. We should've stuck with the harpoon. (Gordon) The alternate entry team had already opened the front door, so we made entry through the alpha side. Good to have a contingency plan, because your plans doesn't always work. (woman #1) I don't think it's no drug house. (woman #2) No, I don't think it is. I think it's what they came to do, to find. But I think they were disappointed. (man) Gangster roll, right there. (Lancaster) There's a table there, and there's big chunks of crack rock sitting right there. And I guess that's where that table-- he said that's where they cut it up at. But there was definitely some dope in a big plastic bag. (Lee) I can't understand why a person would be upset at the police for busting a drug house in their neighborhood. I don't know. That just-- that amazes me. It's a necessary evil that something's got to be done. [whistles] (man) I don't think he's going to come out very willing. (Byas) Most houses that we hit will have some type of very aggressive attack dog. However, we have found the majority of the time, these dogs are just as scared of us coming in as we are of them. It's been a few months since I've lost Ranger. I know I want to get another dog. I'm just not sure if the timing's right. However, I'm going to go the SPCA, just go see what kind of dogs are available. Not only was Ranger a big boy, but he was a big presence in my life as well. So getting a puppy, it's going to be pretty hard to fill Ranger's shoes. Standing here in line, it's kind of tough, tougher than I thought it was going to be. Looking for a dog, I think. Looking for a dog. I think. You think. Are you ready for one? Yeah, I think. How old is this one? Dogs, it doesn't matter how much you yell at them, how much you scold them, whatever you do, they're always right there for you. Just looking for a home, huh? Is that all? You're just looking for a home? Is he just chilling? [makes kissing noises] Come here. Oh, look at that, you're already on the couch. I just don't know. I could take them all. When I first walked in, I just don't think I was ready. I had a lump in my throat right off the bat. I think I'm going to hold off for right now. My thinking is, the dog's going to come to me. I'm going to know which dog it is. He'll be the one at the pistol range, where, you know, he just comes out of nowhere. And I think that'll be the dog that I'll probably end up getting. The SPCA here doesn't euthanize, which means that these dogs all have a chance. And that's a good note. And, you know, mine will come.
