Dale Earnhardt's 1997 Newell Coach: I ALMOST Bought It! (Tour and Inspection)

all right so I am driving to Nevada right now from Oklahoma City just spur-of-the-moment just got my truck started driving because I'm going to by Dale Earnhardt's old RV it's a 1997 Newell the engines custom painted red man I'm just I'm in shock really that I found this thing and this is this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and honestly this bus should be in a museum but I'm gonna buy it and I'm gonna fix it up and it's gonna be my house I'm gonna live in it and you know totally Escalade races it's let's go it's gonna live the racetrack life again you won the Daytona 500 98 so you would have come back from being covered and all champagne and beer and everything you know take a shower clean up get ready in there that's that was that was this house for 30-something weekends a year the man Dale senior and I checked his RV listings like every day just about every day and for some reason that you know it's been a few days since I looked I looked again and I saw it listing said it was built for Dale and Theresa and I'm like yeah okay bro and you know I see that the pictures and like the you know Goodwrench clock and stuff on the inside and I'm like yeah it was probably like a really big fan had this thing put that stuff in there and it got misconstrued somewhere along the line probably thinks it was Dale's and then you know flipping through pictures it's got the Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet dealership badge on the back that looked like it was a little faded looked about as old as the bus was and I'm like yeah it doesn't confirm anything either because you know you can buy those I know bunch people that have them then I get to the engine bay picture it's got a Detroit 60 series diesel in it like all the duels and brave oohs of that area have era and it's read the whole motors red and it's got chrome bolts and stuff on it like that's when I was like you know what maybe this isn't baloney because all of the inside of Dale's race cars were read like he had that's just how it was and when they custom order these things if you tell Newell I want you to pay the motor read they will paint it red that's how it works is for a million dollar bus you get whatever you want and of all the motors I've ever seen got these listings hundreds and hundreds of the semi truck sell all that stuff the Detroit sixty series is always blue so that really caught my attention and I was able to track down the previous owner there's some severe internet digging and gave him a call and was able to confirm the build number that it was it was Dale's old coach and after that I freaking went on there I called the guy Texas guy I sent him an email like any possible way of communication I was like it's like dude give me a call back I'll put a deposit on this thing hasn't about it ASAP just let me know and he texted me and said yeah I'll call you tomorrow morning so I talked to him this morning he'll and good and I freaking hopped in my truck and I'm driving to Nevada so I'm out here in Kingman Arizona yeah that's where I'm at that's some extra truck stop I actually slept the back of my truck again and took a shower at the like trucker showers in the Metro cuz I can't justify spending a hundred and something dollars to stay in a hotel guys want some asleep I don't know where I am anyway I can afford to get a hotel but ten nights in a hotel cells dollars if it's a cheap hotel I'd rather do something up for that money and the first thing to get cut in pursuit of forward progress is always my personal comfort that's just how I am I'm a lot three hours from the place in Nevada where the dáil bus is at and I've exchanged about four text messages and one phone call with this guy after first phone call there's another phone call I hopped my truck started driving and I haven't heard from him since which is a little weird but don't risk an overboard though there it is over there mmm I still have not gotten any contact back from the seller in almost a day now and I drove 1,200 miles for this thing so I'm not just gonna turn around and leave because he won't you know hasn't picked up the phone or texted me back he's an older dude you don't look at their feelings all the time cuz I am as well go swing by and see if it's there and well it's there so she's gonna ring the doorbell see what happens I guess I mean I can't quit now I'm halfway across the continent so let's uh gotta risk is you get the biscuit well found it uh see if anybody's home I I don't know this is weird there's whole thing's weird but you know oh here we are found the Dale bus first impression it's uh it's got somewhere a couple things this is a piece of history right here one year younger than I am wow this is it there's some legendary stools taken in here that's for sure this is just insane this is where this there's no whites hair I'll plug in now that's probably where the legendary stools were taken so you I got four head over here it's tight got more room than the previous bit it's like an access hole for the engine okay so this stuff wasn't in here before the current owner here put that stuff in here that's terrible I love it I hope it starts when was the last time it like rolled or like drove anywhere like how long has it been on here for two weeks ago I started it and forc it like six days and before that like had it gone around town at all or what was last time it left the property this thing needs some help for sure just little odds and ends poor thing seen better days means the taillights throw cloudy get that wrap off there none of these tires are the same a tag tag tire is dated 4405 2005 that back tire didn't there 15 years I guess that that dent was there a slide-out stuck in front windshield like popped out looks like the mirrors kind of doing the same thing that's just a mess the guy that this guy bought it from back in 2015 he said when he bought this from IndyCar driver I forget his name I'll put it down there that somebody from the NASCAR world offered him like six hundred grand for this coach to put it in a museum and he turned it down this thing needs a lot of work I mean a lot this thing couldn't have brought into the ground and be totally useless that's been on there for a long time allegedly Dale stuck it there or Dale stuck it there so much from his crew whatever but it's probably been there for most of the life all this back cover here is painted red to match the outside he's got the chrome package from Newell a lot of the NASCAR guys do the chrome package Mark Martin especially I don't know what happened the exhaust here is gonna fricking gonna start not quite that's the air intake not quite enough yet so mean you're now running through everything see what works and what doesn't ask about that let the exhaust fan left one does work right one doesn't do anything need something like maybe stick some Genma cuz I'm gonna come back down do something like a wave December 99 so it's not original to the bus it does work wash dryer under here is shut off baby yeah the other side a fan doesn't do anything when you flip the switch light doesn't even come on what does this a/c work huh does the a/c work up here yeah it does this is fall off them no I took it out so I clean these things you're up Oh ironing board closet back here wonder if this is running the old fire suit used to hang recap that in the Haller it's a beefy door okay that's problem Oh already know and that's on the list that door would swing open you're driving yes there's a rock on here her brick because the arm hold it down Pam off or something this fly's open so we put brick on I spot for an ancient TV in there I think this alarm is a like if you hear somebody rattling around outside or something you flip that and it makes a little ooh sound scare people away did that the closet door back there always not latch you went top screw it's come loose okay and okay I take in that a couple like three or four toothpicks is stuck in there you know and then I tighten it up and it worked good for a couple times but my my wife sheets you know forever closed them that you know thinking it's a break in the house and you know slams shut I like to put some a little bit of water in there hook up the city connection just to make sure all the all those pickets work and stuff why don't you go go get a motel room let's leave it plug in and come by like it's seven o'clock in the morning and we'll go through everything okay okay then we'll see if the freezer gets cold the origin right all that stuff I want to test all the okay Oh as much of the systems right I can't deal with Teresa's game table which is that little console they paid it's like I'm taking 1200 or 1500 bucks damn give me make this right here it pulls up and that's XM radio and then TV did you put that TV in there No okay I did yeah when the slides out there the coffee table that matches this stuff and the you know the tan color where's that out it's in the over there is it just sitting here to say just going to the couch or something I just do this one folds out into a bed and I have those in there because she was teaching in here and uh I had the air off and so I put those in there because gold wind blows in here yeah definitely need some need some work but well see I I bought it to fix it I bought I bought it because I rescued it from that guy in Florida and I mean I had a do you see that snap-on clock this back here in that bedroom yeah I had probably 20 of his stamp on every every one that stamp on guy could get me he got for me because he knew I wanted him and anyway because I just I mean I had a tailor own art coat the hats and you know I mean I do i watch that's who I watched and in Florida if you'd like to sit there and rot cuz he just he had that new one and eat yeah you got that the paperwork with his the signatures and stuff on it you know what I want see that'd be cool okay close that come on you make it yeah Devin yeah yeah that works okay well let's check out this paperwork huh I want to see the paperwork no you only I think it really doesn't doorbell work no it's supposed to be a speaker thing what you know Hey you store stuff under there [Music] I think their tablets where do you get a round mattress at they sell and they even sell the look there it is says Earnhardt right there Earnhardt front terminal board coach number 457 feenin panel back there which one he's got an art you know stuff right here for for him and then there's some of the stuff has the initials you know the initials off but this tells you what all the fuses are for your 12-volt mm-hmm and then of course your breaker box for everything that's just that's all paperwork that's all just there's nothing everything nothing the initialed in there no overnight and uh you know what the you know the fridge get cold the freezer get cold so I know all that stuff works then put some water in and check all the spigots make sure it's doing everything's supposed to do water heater all that stuff and then you serve the negotiation process did not know worth what he's asking for it miss asking price in this condition is a premium for it being Dale's and a hefty wanted that because this thing needs a lot of work for a safe it'll fire up now after charging all night hopefully does if it doesn't that doesn't bode well for me buying this thing [Music] like we're already halfway to [Applause] generator fire up now - yeah [Music] go there right now mitten you touch up on the phone the other day about uh Eric yeah and uh I remembered I heard something right down there mm-hmm I pulled that out this morning and they're all you know the push Connect meetings yeah and I don't know what was loose but I found this last night we got Dale intrigued Stuart heart 96 there you go yeah I mean the initials of everybody who signed it that's not an original which one says there was something here where you've got his okay take your damn this a little bit Eagle let's go five 1596 Dale and Teresa Earnhardt surreal we're sitting here in the belt now I want to hook it up make sure all the faucets work make sure the well Bosco gets hot all that stuff make sure like the shower works and you said the ice makers disconnected back here yeah on the backside because that's what drawer right here it got wet the drawer expanded Ayanna unless they got a little bit of mold in that drawer fire it up good for test drive [Applause] it's the first time this thing's left the yard in like two years I think he said was build some rubber in this tire here is a groping on something up in there it's got like override lever and these tires are trash anyway I'm not sure what that squeaking is from what I understand you're supposed to change the steer tires every five years and the drive tires the back ones are good for about seven just as these things are so heavy if they start to dry rot the front sauce ended up the back is not we believe there's an air leak significant one the back of the look at all [Music] [Applause] [Music] so the it's got a ride height sensor bar on there and it's like in the wrong spot and I tried to jack it up with the hydraulic jack and I didn't even have enough nuts to pick it up the whole way so he's sitting there trying to do it it just came off completely so Forked because the snow sort of our thinks it doesn't need to be lifted what's going on here so he's all mad we can't get the hydraulic leveling system to even work you can't even drive it I've driven this thing yet and we're screwing with it this is like tweaking out going up and down and she's like I give up you got through the whole thing I've seen everything you know how it is or that he wanted her you don't and I'm like well obviously he's a lot more than I thought I did because can you drive it right now so what are you thinking now he's just sitting out there steaming because he got himself an icy garden ornament now like if I I can't even make him an offer guess if I made him an offer I came take it he doesn't know they can't move it so yeah it was a interesting interesting scenario here I guess first one to blink loses we'll see what happens said anything and probably 10 minutes now probably dealing with the fact that he knows he got himself a nice ornament and see if you're gonna need a lot of money put it towards gonna have to dump it super cheap which we're gonna see how it feels about option two thought oh no some more stuff so what do you think it I mean I haven't talked to my wife about it but probably it's low tonight going six cubes I mean I could split the difference with the tires and batteries and stuff like that but I have to okay it through first I mean that's still needs like I couldn't even get home in this condition so it means I need to put a lot into it before I even go anywhere you [Music] lever back down on top of it that's all it is I can't put both arms up in there same guy I mean you can fix in 10 minutes not if I can't like drive this guy is upset cool I would be too I mean he's like mad at me and you know you told me it worked he had no idea that any of this was like that he hadn't used it in two and a half years and he's pissed at himself because he had a buyer on his doorstep and blew it 62 I may be done 62 if I got here and all I needed were tires and batteries but that's not the case it needs a lot more than that I'd need a lot of work just for me to get it out of here just drive back to Oklahoma he said well I've insurance on it's like my grants I'll be here in 10 minutes to fix this thing and you know then it's all that's all good it's then this before I might well mean regardless whether he fixes it or not I still can't drive it you don't have insurance on it so I mean it doesn't do me much good by someone else gonna come here do all the same stuff I did checking everything all that stuff that's what an informed buyer does and he's gonna have to do through the same hoops and someone's gonna have to have a lot of money and a lot of space to just buy that thing because of it is what it is is that you know there comes a point where even the sentimental value and history of that is just not worth it and for that price it's just not worth it he's way too much money put into it honestly he'd be best off selling it to somebody who wanted to use it for like a museum or something and they just parked it they didn't try to drive it because it needs you know if you took that thing into Newell for service Oh 30 grand all day just to get it into reliable commuter status I wouldn't trust that thing I'd sooner Drive the Escalade back to freaking Oklahoma City from basically California borders five miles that way you're past Vegas 1200 miles I would rather drive the Escalade then drive that thing I'd have a better chance to get home that way 62 you get one that actually functions properly and you know what that was absolutely worth it because I got to explore Dale Earnhardt's personal coach that's a visa is 3 no matter which way you shake it I have this footage I'll have that story and you know it's as a cool experience I learned a lot and it was valuable to me in my coach shopping you know knowledge is now this is the second time I've gone looking at them and I know more about you know what they're like what to look for what doesn't work and things to check stuff like that the more I look at the more I can compare and the more educated I am so is this enough this ain't over we'll see
