hello friends father frank pavone here national director of priests for life welcome to our mass we want to pray for you and your intentions so feel free to leave them in the comments throughout the liturgy as we continue our lenten journey together the lord heard and had mercy on me the lord became my helper in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you let us repent of all our sins lord jesus victor over death lord have mercy lord have mercy lord jesus giver of life christ have mercy christ have mercy lord jesus coming in glory lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen let us pray show gracious favor o lord we pray to the works of penance we have begun that we may have strength to accomplish with sincerity the bodily observances we undertake through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah thus says the lord god cry out full throated and unsparingly lift up your voice like a trumpet blast tell my people their wickedness and the house of jacob their sins they seek me day after day and desire to know my ways like a nation that has done what is just not abandoned the law of their god they ask me to declare what is do them pleased to gain access to god why do we fast then you do not see it afflict ourselves and you take no note of it low on your fast day you carry out your own pursuits and drive all your laborers yes your fast ends in quarreling and fighting striking with wicked claw wood that today you might fast so as to make your voice heard on high is this the manner of fasting i wish of keeping a day of penance that a man bow his head like a reed and lie in sackcloth and ashes do you call this a fast the day acceptable to the lord this rather is the fasting that i wish releasing those bound unjustly untying the thongs of the yoke setting free the oppressed breaking every yoke sharing your bread with the hungry sheltering the oppressed and the homeless clothing the naked when you see them and not turning your back on your own then your light shall break forth like the dawn and your wound shall quickly be healed your vindication shall go before you and the glory of the lord shall be your rear guard then you shall call and the lord will answer you shall cry for help and he will say here i am the word of the lord thanks be to god a heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn a heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me a heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn for i acknowledge my offense and my sin is before me always against you only have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight a heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn for you are not pleased with sacrifices should i offer a burnt offering you would not accept it my sacrifice o god is a contrite spirit a heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn a heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you o lord the disciples of john approached jesus and said why do we in the pharisees fast much but your disciples do not fast jesus answered them can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them and then they will fast the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ friends the lenten readings continue to call us to repentance they continue to call us to a true reform of our mind our heart and our behavior submitting our choices to the lord practicing virtue practicing love of god and our neighbor the lesson from isaiah 58 today might be compared to a person who says oh i am taking care of my health because i eat three times a day well eating and eating three times a day does in fact constitute a key element of taking care of our health but what if those three times a day that person is just eating popcorn and chocolate bars you're not taking care of your health yes you can say you're eating no denying it you probably can sit down and lay out everything nicely on the table and have a meal of popcorn and chocolate bars the lord is not looking for some kind of legalistic mechanical observance of his commands and of worship isaiah says you people are fasting you're covering yourselves with ashes you're bowing your head like a reed but you're not changing your heart and you're not loving god and you're not caring for one another and you're not bringing into the world the justice you are asking for from god you're saying lord set me free from sin save me and you're not setting others free from what oppresses them or saving them you want god to hear your voice but you're not hearing the voices of those who are crying out to you now the advice to someone who is eating in the way that i mentioned is to continue eating don't stop eating three times a day but eat healthy foods eat right eat what is truly going to accomplish the purpose of eating which is to nourish the body yes you're eating but you're not nourishing so similarly here the lord says fast in such a way that accomplishes the purpose of the fasting the purpose of the fasting that is drawing closer to god so that you can love him and love one another set the oppressed free share your bread with the hungry the denying of oneself means not every things are not just for me in other words set the oppressed free because what fasting is meant to do when we talk about self-denial it's deny and reverse the dynamic that says oh i'm just minding my own business as long as everything is okay in my world i don't have to worry that there's a slave there i don't have to worry that somebody else is oppressed oh bob just taking care of my own affairs share your bread with the hungry the purpose of self-denial is to change our way of thinking not simply to answer the question do i have enough for me but to answer the question does the other person have enough for him and i share not just out of my surplus but even out of my need even what i need i will share with the hungry this is the way god says to make your voice heard on high god is not interested simply in prayers he's interested in a heart that is ready to be transformed by him that's why as we read here in isaiah 58 we find the same message in isaiah chapter 1 where we have what i think is one of the scariest verses of the bible where he says when you lift up your hands in prayer i will not listen if we can't go to god to whom do we go you lift up your hands in prayer i will not listen why because he said to the people you're ignoring bloodshed in your midst your hands are full of blood in other words to pray and to ignore the bloodshed in your midst is to fail to accomplish the purpose of prayer just like eating three times a day just junk food doesn't accomplish the purpose of eating and brothers and sisters there is no better way to carry out isaiah 58 and isaiah 1 for that matter than fighting abortion because there is no one under a greater yoke there is no one more oppressed than the children in the first nine months of life their right to even exist their very personhood is not acknowledged under the law and they're being destroyed by an act of violence that takes more human life than any other act of violence and the current number of those killed just in our country here in the u.s since roe v wade in 1973 which legalized abortion the current number is 63 and a half million 63 and a half million untie the yokes set free the oppressed shelter them do not turn your back on your own notice what isaiah says on your own the evil of abortion which is evil enough simply because it's the killing of a baby is multiplied in its gravity by the fact that it is the killing of one's own baby do not turn your back on your own charity begins at home the first obligation of love is to those that have been entrusted to our care most directly one's own children one's own family you want to have a lent where god is really going to listen to your prayers stand up for the unborn set free the yoke that is oppressing the children in the womb speak up for them take part in the prayer vigils that are happening through lent all over the country in front of abortion facilities take part with ministries like ours at priests for life in educating others about the reality of abortion and let's have a fast that is truly pleasing to the lord amen we have heard god's word let us now intercede for his people that the church throughout the world may truly engage in fasting and worship that is pleasing and effective before the lord we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that those who are most oppressed the children in the womb may indeed be set free from the violence of abortion let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that all heads of state may recognize their duties to set free the oppressed than to feed the hungry we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who do lack daily bread or homes or jobs or freedom let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all those who have lost their jobs because of a taking a stand of conscience that they may be strengthened in conscience and provided for by the lord let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for president donald trump and his family and associates as they continue their great work for the good of our country let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that all the sick may be healed according to god's will and all the dead may be purified and have eternal rest we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer thank you father for this time of worship hear and answer these and all the prayers that are in our hearts today through christ our lord amen she my brothers and sisters pray now that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good in the good of all his holy church we offer oh lord the sacrifice of our lenten observance praying that it may make our intentions acceptable to you and add to our powers of self-restraint through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that our self-denial should give you thanks humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and so help us imitate you in your kindness and so we glorify you with countless angels as with one voice of praise we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and john our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever amen [Music] let us pray for the coming of the kingdom as jesus taught us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen may the peace of the lord be with you always lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my
