[Music] ignorance is bliss for a long time one of the most discussed topics about the matrix is why cipher betrayed his team his reasons were so influential that they ended up inspiring a group of radicals in the matrix online known as the cypherites and although this is a topic that has already been discussed several times on this channel today we will try to explain once and for all why cipher did it and to see if this character who was remembered for being a traitor was right welcome to matrix explained welcome to the desert of the real to understand cipher's motivations we must go back to the beginning cipher was a red pill assigned to the nebuchadnezzar under the command of morpheus although we don't know much about cipher's origins we can extrapolate and deduce like other red pills cipher was born in the matrix he caught the attention of morpheus who offered him the choice of the red or blue pill you gave them morpheus he lied to us trinity he tricked us if you would have told us the truth we would have told you to shove that red pill right up your ass then cypher went through the process that all red pills must go through the psychological and physical combat training the animatrix shows one of these tests was meant to determine if the red pill was a risk if they had tendencies to possibly betray the resistance cypher passed all these tests however he still ended up betraying them something else must have happened to cipher first he had a deep hatred towards morpheus he claimed that morpheus lied to them before offering them the red pill that it's not true cipher he set us free free you called this free all i do is what he tells me to do if i got to choose between that and the matrix i choose the matrix cipher woke up into the real world looking for freedom and ended up in a literal nightmare in the middle of a war that he did not understand to follow orders from a radical but why was his hatred for morpheus so deep cipher was a skeptic by nature constantly doubting neil's prophecy and purpose i mean how can he be the one if he's dead you never did answer me before if you bought into morpheus's [ __ ] come on all i want is a little yes or no at the beginning of the movie we can hear the conversation between trinity and cipher where he says that they're going to kill him we're going to kill him you understand that morpheus believes he is the one do you it doesn't matter what i believe cipher saying that neil was going to pop after discovering the truth meant that he knew that neo could die at any moment because he has seen it before the original script for the matrix has many deleted and alternate scenes some of which we have already covered in previous videos let's just say that if some of these scenes were in the final movie cipher's motivations would be more understandable cipher may have witnessed how morpheus awakened other alleged ones just for them to end up being killed regardless of their deaths morpheus continued without ever questioning the words of the oracle according to a deleted script scene morpheus recruited five other alleged saviors all of which have died this is why at the beginning of the movie cipher says that they're going to kill him what he was referring to is that they will cause neil's death by removing him from the matrix there is another deleted scene where cipher warns neo about the existence of his predecessors and how morpheus was responsible for their deaths we must understand that although these scenes did not make it into the final cut of the film they still affected the motivations of the characters in the book the art of the matrix there is the story of eddie a red pill that morpheus thought was the one eddie was caught by smith and the agents after trying to see his girlfriend in the matrix morpheus had to forcefully disconnect eddie from the simulation so that he would not give information to the agents this scene was removed because it revealed too much about the laws of the film it was a lamentable decision by the creators but it needed to be done you could say that this scene was important in helping to understand certain elements and motivations most likely cipher saw how morpheus technically murdered eddie and each of the others he thought were the one convincing them with the oracle's fairy tales this puts morpheus in the position of a blind fanatic and cipher was the rational person now the second reason that drove cipher to madness or perhaps extremism was the oracle as we know the oracle was directly responsible for the love between trinity and neo it was she who suggested it to neo by alluding that trinity liked him i can see why she likes you who not too bright though later in the film trinity confesses to neo that the oracle prophesied that she would fall in love with the one the oracle told me that i would fall in love [Music] that same emotion was part of the architect's plan they manipulated their feelings of love to keep the anomaly in check your five predecessors were by design based on a similar predication a contingent affirmation that was meant to create a profound attachment to the rest of your species facilitating the function of the one while the others experienced this in a very general way your experience is far more specific vis-a-vis love trinity but what does any of this have to do with cipher throughout the film we can see how cipher is jealous of neo he questions trinity if she liked them then he jokes about her never bringing food to his room cypher had to watch the woman he loved follow the prophecies of the oracle and the orders of a fanatic as she was fighting in a war that was already lost but there is something else interesting about this and that is the possibility that the oracle was also manipulating cipher bingo just before cipher disconnected apoc he tells trinity that he was in love with her that he had dreams about her i thought i was in love with you i used to dream about you you're a beautiful woman trinity originally we thought that cipher's love for trinity was platonic which is why he dreamed about her but in the matrix sequels there is a clue that points to the oracle's meddling in matrix reloaded neil was having nightmares of trinity's death the oracle herself asked him if he was sleeping well rhetorical of course because she knew exactly why he was having these dreams how do you feel are you i know you're not sleeping we'll get to that why don't you come and have us this time as we know the love between the one and trinity was part of the architect's plan and neil's nightmares were also a part of that same plan the architect needed neo to dream about trinity to manipulate him into choosing her over zion so cipher needed to fall in love with trinity for him to betray morpheus but then how is it that the oracle can implant dreams into people and for what reason remember that red pills can receive information and learn skills thanks to digital codes a red pill can be infected by other programs if this theory is true then the oracle could have given a cookie to cipher with a virus of love for trinity and his dreams could have been a direct result of the oracle's manipulation i thought i was in love with you i used to dream about you but for what reason simple to instigate the manifestation of the anomaly perhaps the oracle knew that the only way for the anomaly to manifest itself is if its host dies and is rebooted maybe it had something to do with the connection between trinity and neo which was also created by the oracle cipher's portrayal was probably needed for neo's manifestation as the one looking back at the oracle's manipulation of morpheus and the crew including neo makes us realize that everything was part of the same plan the crew's sacrifice was in vain because they fulfilled the plan of the oracle and the architect because just like the matrix the real world is part of the same system of
