cyberpunk 77 was announced in may 2012 and people found themselves so excited for another game from cd projekt red you think they were previously responsible for coding down the berlin wall its teaser trailer featured absolutely no gameplay or any illusion to what gameplay may entail yet it amassed over 24 million views oh here we go have we learned nothing from getting excited about games we know nothing about no man's sky spore barbie dolphin magic fallout 4 burned me long ago and i learnt from that experience in a totally normal and adult way the witcher 3 is [ __ ] great it's a textbook example of how to make a aaa game an astounding ass it had the big budget graphics you'd expect from these kinds of games but it was held aloft by its incredibly grim settings and themes they didn't shy away from anything prostitute murdering disfigurement nudity gore and oh my god what the hell is that the meeting of the crones and the witcher 3 for me is one of the most shocking scenes in any game i've ever played three witches as old as time itself each of them given more detail than you can possibly imagine from their own fabulous stress sense to each one of them having their own individually choreographed movements this whole meeting aches with detail yet almost none of what you see is ever elaborated on it's a masterpiece of a scene and on top of that none of it was even inspired by the witcher book series it was entirely an invention of cd projekt red the witcher 3 also held its grim tone without ever getting overly depressing which is important every word out of geralt's mouth was either hilarious really got an imp problem or is that just an imp perfection in the notice or burned someone so hard you wonder why he ever even bothered learning the igni sign we had branching storylines up the kazoo practically every mission felt like it had multiple outcomes depending on how you behave pick the right choices in a random dialogue tree in a side quest somewhere and you can end up plotting to kill the king it's [ __ ] great this game did not [ __ ] about with its choices uh oh um uh uh oh um uh i love you oh god jennifer's gonna [ __ ] kill me it also chose the true path of realism over being realistic geralt for example moved around the game like some sort of guided missile whereas in more realistic games like red dead redemption 2 the movement speed is somewhere between crawling and being dead it did almost everything right and to me is probably the best game i've ever played i'll bring it up more throughout this review and compare it to cyberpunk where relevant first i'm supposed to introduce cyberpunk 77 to the two of you watching who haven't heard of it what you also want me to introduce you to what life is like on the milky way as well planet earth is home to over 7 billion humans in 2020 they released a game called cyberpunk no no no you don't need to know this look let me break it down for you [Music] now this is a story all about how i had to play cyberpunk 77 i'd like to take a minute just sit right there i'll tell you all the details of every single glitch i encountered [Music] okay we should stop now because of copyright issues i can't even begin to list every single glitch i saw in this game but i'm gonna do it anyway unreleased the game shook whenever i tried to move while in conversation people's eyes can behave very strangely cut scenes load with people outside their cars npcs perform random actions without the items they should be holding the [ __ ] you smile in it characters will randomly jump into new locations subtitles will get stuck on the screen item menus will get stuck on the screen hair meshes collide with each other cars don't collide with each other characters will randomly scream for no reason i'll get stuck in areas and not be able to move npcs suddenly t-pose because they don't know what else to do spelling mistakes items you can't loot floating objects and glitching textures so more like cyberpunk 76 if you catch my drift one time i summoned my car to me it knocked me off a ledge causing me damage and then it took a vertical stance and blew up another time i summoned my car's me found it on its side and surprise surprise it eventually blew up oh good my insurance covers it for a slight fee how reasonable at one point i was traveling in a self-driving taxi and as it started to explain how it was giving me its highest quality excelsior package we collided with another car the strangest glitch by far was an ominous black shadow that covered the surface of night city changing the skin tone of everyone it touched to the black skin tone you can select from the character creation menu i mean what the hell is happening with this game i'm reviewing the pc version of this game by the way because i'm better than you in every conceivable way the thing is the glitches in this game are so frequent when something surprising happens i can't tell if it's something intended or if i'm actually seeing a glitch like are these person's eyes supposed to be lighting up or are they just having a catastrophic meltdown i'm just trying to read the paper cyberpunk 77 is set in the inevitable dystopian future because what you think the human race is going down the star trek route that nonsense is centuries behind us well that's great for you patrick but no pandemics ever hit the enterprise although there was that one virus that turned troy into an oddly alluring fish person anyway the game is set in night city and our character v has a in our character five has a few weeks to live before she loses her mind and keanu reeves takes over her consciousness but i can think of worse ways to go it's one of those video game dealies where the clock is ticking ever closer to your death so naturally the game is populated entirely with missions that have absolutely nothing to do with saving yourself and you're expected to crack right on with them one mission literally involves spending two hours preparing for and attending a funeral oh good i'll slot that right in between doing this week's laundry and me literally losing my mind to bill and or ted i don't know why games keep doing this fallout 4 did the exact same thing my wife was murdered in front of my eyes and my son stolen i must get them back um there are some raiders that have been bothering us could you go into what have you done with my son could you go pick some melons for him i know he's here somewhere in this future mankind is also obsessed with cybernetic enhancement which involves replacing parts of your body with machinery this premise is responsible for a huge amount of the game's variety as we will see but i just can't help but ask why why would anyone do this unless they actually required cybernetics for some kind of medical reason within the first 10 minutes of the game we learned pretty overtly that these implants can be painfully rejected forcefully stolen catastrophically malfunction induce insanity cause depression hallucinations addictive behavior murderous tendencies not to mention that any implant can be hacked by anything more advanced than a [ __ ] calculator allowing people to cause you anything from blindness to literally setting you on fire and to what ends you can have eyes that slightly zoom hello a pocket telescope just look at these eyes what are the benefits here one i can see further two no one will ever love me hey i just got this new cybernetic hand i'll never know the touch of another person the thing is here i don't really play many aaa games but i thought cyberpunk 77 was pretty good oh my god my plant's completely dead um but based on what people have said about this game you think it was somehow responsible for killing their firstborn child but i guess that's what happens when you enslave your entire workforce a huge amount of effort has clearly gone into making every single character you meet in this game as distinct and as memorable as possible it makes for me at least the the glitch is much easier to ignore as at its core this game has some features i really enjoy the scene where you meet the maelstrom gang the scene where you meet the maelstrom gang is a great example of this beyond being extremely visually striking this whole scene is covered with environmental storytelling this guy's appearance changes drastically when he uses his cybernetics all the characters voices sound purposefully warped like they're blaring out of old speakers this guy here is hooked up to their systems in some horrible way but none of this is ever explained or elaborated on within this scene this level of detail is consistent throughout the main story too with even minor characters getting the same attention this sketchy surgeon for example has a hand sanitizer conveniently attached to his hip you can just imagine this is simply here because he can't be bothered to wash his hands before a surgery you see i'd almost argue that this game's primary gameplay loop that being the thing you focus on doing most in the game is simply conversation finally a game everyone can enjoy it is at least the game's highlight every dialogue scene is so beautifully detailed and animated they may be the most impressive of any game i've ever played in almost any conversation you have the world will be energetically buzzing around you the game's incredible soundtrack perfectly encapsulating the scene's mood in these moments you can completely forget you're playing a video game [Music] okay never mind as a result it's a huge shame that the two characters i like the least in this game are those are the two main characters the and johnny silverhand who's played by keanu reeves it's not that they're bad exactly johnny may as well be a talking motorcycle that's on fire for how badass he is it's just that v's behavior only really seems to flip between cynicals it's all very heartwarming but you haven't paid me yet aggressive go [ __ ] yourself dick wipe or disbelieving a tortoise is this some kind of joke which on its own would be okay but johnny is just as equally miserable most of the time picture of this you've got no one beloved granny's been in the ground for years only thing she's left behind is a dumb [ __ ] tortoise when that same life kicked you in the net when poor grams imagine how alone you've gotta be to for a god damn hell on its surface cyberpunk 77 is a lot like gta you spend most of the game driving around the city and completing missions and by driving i of course mean losing control of your car inadvertently mowing down a small crowd of pedestrians and then driving away trying to escape from the police this may not be the main goal but it was a good 60 of my drive time physics once you get a bit of practice it's fine it's just at the beginning it's not very intuitive on screen now is no joke my first attempt at driving and none of this constant murder was at all intentional see here i think i'm back on the road but nope i go flying straight back into people and then we'd like the courts to recognize that two of the people the defendant is accused of killing were actually committing suicide at the time where did this person come from what the hell is happening here the city is pretty maze-like too and you can't ever drive over ledges to try and get to nearby objectives like you can in gta it generally makes these driving sections feel really restrictive on foot however the game plays anything but as you travel through the world you can hack literally any of the electronic objects you find oh yeah this was definitely worth replacing my bones for you can fight with large guns small guns silent guns knives swords fists clubs whatever the hell you'd class this move as use skills to bypass areas craft new weapons sneak around or completely annihilate all who oppose you and this doesn't even cover the vast vast vast amount of cyberware you can get shoved into pretty much any orifice available best cyberware upgrades range from increasing your armor to allow jumping while already in midair double jumping i didn't realize this was [ __ ] super smash brothers this is apparently made possible by installing reinforced tendons what do they do snap while you're in midair sending you hurtling into the sky on top of this you also have over 400 perks available to upgrade your character meaning it can be incredibly difficult to decide what to get first fortunately all these upgrades are pretty useful faster movement more stamina regenerating health increased damage while carrying a body when would this be useful now we're getting somewhere clothing leads us down the same rabbit hole as there are six major clothing slots and you're constantly finding new things that have higher armor ratings this means your best armor combinations are never gonna go together and you invariably end up looking like r2d2 by ways of elton john welcome to night city my main problem with most aaa games though is that they have so much content that it ends up being wildly inconsistent and this game is no exception there's one mission where you have to find seven different cars that reach in different areas of the map so you travel to that one area get that car go to the next area get that car you go to the next area but then there are missions like where you have to analyze these programs called brain dances these missions are so good i think if you took them all out of the game strung them together and got toby fox to do the music you'd effectively have an award-winning indie game in these missions you're basically analyzing sections of a past event to find clues the first time you do this you're actually analyzing a recording of a room that you're planning on breaking into later you then use what you learn in this sequence to plan a heist the witcher 3 interestingly had a very similar game mechanic where geralt would carefully scan a room or area to make detailed deductions that only really a witcher could something jumped out of the rushes drowners but he managed to escape these sequences work so well in both these games because even though you're basically told exactly where to look for clues you get to observe the characters making pretty specialized deductions from what they're seeing it gives you a real detailed insight into their world the thing is triple a games are always telling you exactly what to do at all times like you're some sort of mad sheep but in other games like where arthur tracks animals and red dead redemption 2 for example he'll just find a bit of poo give us some fascinating commentary that only he can provide okay where are you then we get a [ __ ] coloured stream of air telling us exactly where to go next cyber 177 at least tries to spice up the moment-to-moment gameplay by having johnny silverhand appear every now and again to give you his take on things it can be pretty insightful but usually he's just complaining about something non-smokers are the [ __ ] worst ugh that's what they should be replacing huh i'm sorry did she finally say anything useful uh osaka's still a despotic machine in the world's on a collision course with chaos what do you know you're not even facing the right way you can of course use your scanning ability to observe the world too but it only really gives you basic information about things oh look a door i'm so glad i had both my eyes replaced for that sparkle of wisdom and what's this a refrigerator what a rush i could have easily have told you that because what you don't know about me is i love refrigerators all in all then beyond the bugs i think this is a pretty good game on the pc at least it's incredibly varied beautiful and the writing and music is well above a lot of the games i've played it of course shouldn't have been released in this state and it tries to do so many different things its quality is all over the place but i can't help but think if people didn't wait six years for it watching and reading all the promotion arranging keanu reeves in pride of place in their living room sawing off limbs in case the game came with a surprise cybernetic arm maybe they wouldn't have been so disappointed with what they got and i know we can't let them get away with it they didn't i do believe there's a great game in here it just seems like by whoever's decision they tried to do way too much and spread it all too thin i mean this game has three separate one-hour openings which change depending on the backstory you pick you could argue that this has some value but combining that with an open world cars and motorbikes gunplay hacking endless upgrades hundreds of side quests stealth branching storylines branching dialogue trees varying gameplay modes and varying gendered meshes to animate what cd projekt red have done here was clearly a mammoth task and sections of this game are some of the best in any video game i've played clearly the developers just needed more time or less work so there we have it folks six years waiting for a video game that only personified the themes of worker exploitation and corporate money grabbing it portrayed the main thing is you enjoyed the video and you aren't all too mad at me for my opinions on a video game and remember i can't hurt you so you may have noticed i just did two videos in two months have the gods shine off upon us this year well maybe but this is something i plan on continuing and it was all made possible by this video's sponsor skillshare you see skillshare creates thousands of high quality classes for creative people like us i see you there watching these classes are on loads of different topics including creative writing camera work video editing working as a freelancer all things i've had absolutely no training on until i started using skillshare i'm a chemist this year i've decided that i want to be not only a better but faster video editor so i did the class advanced video editing with adobe premiere pro 2020 by jordi vandeput this class is not only presented in a fun and engaging way but it is so helpful for learning tricks on how to use adobe premiere more efficiently i learned way too much from this class just to list things but let's talk about something i do a lot of zooms and shakes here's an example from this video as well normally i would animate all of this from scratch each time but jordy taught me how to use custom presets effectively this saves me so much time why didn't i learn this sona skillshare is curated specifically for learning too i am not a classroom learner no way but i find this style of learning works for me there are no ads either new premium classes are being launched all the time and it's less than ten dollars a month and you can join skillshare by clicking the link in the description the first 1000 of my subscribers to click the link in the description will get a free trial of premium membership so you can explore your creativity thank you for watching everyone and as always i hope you enjoyed the video [Music] you
