[Music] I'm game night Nicky Mike Lincoln myself Dave are going to play custom heroes an exciting card crafting trick-taking game or so says the box for communis six players published by AEG and designed by John Dee Claire so let's take tricks and craft cards hey Dave yes Lincoln would you teach us custom heroes custom heroes indeed custom heroes is a card game it is sort of a trick-taking game using the aeg card crafting system previously seen in mystic veil the cards are numbered 1 through 10 you use one set 1 through 10 for each player you have in the game so we have 4 of each for our 4 player game and we're gonna then shuffle these all up and deal them all out so you're just gonna get whatever you get ok and then we will random when you turn the start player for the first round but after that whoever wins the trick will start the next round and the obviously this game is to essentially gain 10 victory points and then go out first on a hand ok ok so the Reds the victory points yep these are called these are power chips ok so when you have your hand of cards you and it's your turn to play let's say you're leaning a trick you are going to play any number of cards that you want from your hand as long as they are all the same number okay so you can play an 8 or you can play a pair of eights if you have a pair of eights or if I had a third one which I don't I can tell you 3/8 so you're gonna lead by playing any number of cards as long as they're all the same number ok the next player can either play or pass you are allowed to pass even if you can play and if you pass you are not out you can if it comes back around to you again you can play then so you can pass come in later but as you might suspect let's say I started off with a five as a single card we are now playing single cars so Nikki can either pass or if she wishes to play she can play a single card that is valued five or higher in this case she plays Hey if she had two eights she could not play them because we're just playing single cards right now his ladies turn he can play a single card or he can pass let's say he passes now Mike it's your turn you can even play an eight or higher you have an eight so you play an eight mm-hmm when you match the number that is played the next player in this case me is skipped so now it is Nikki's turn and Nikki would say plague is 10 and now Lincoln he has a ten so you get skipped and it's on me I pass Nikki passes it comes back to Lincoln three people have passed back to him he takes these cards puts them in front of him and he wins that trick and he leads the next card so if you pass you're out for that no okay it's just when three people pass in a row right okay but yeah you passengers and I mean you play ten anyone so there's no points or anything to winning a trick it just means you now lead the next thing okay so Lincoln plays and we keep doing this until three of us play all of our cards let's say Lincoln plays all of his cards first he goes out first the three of us would keep playing until one of us went out and then the last two play based on the order that you go out and this little handy reference sheet that's on the backs of yours as well in a four player game the first person to go out is going to get five victory points you already start with one so now you already have six memory only need ten but then you have to go out first you'll get no power points or she but they'll get one of these card advancements I haven't explained these the other I'm just giving you the basics in the game whoever goes out next gets three one and two whoever goes out third gets one two and two whoever goes out last loses a victory point resets to you basically reset to nine if you have more than 10 so you lose one but if you had say 12 you would go down to 9 and not not lose 1 and you get to power chips and you get 3 of these card advancements so that's the basics of the game now let's talk about these card advancements we all start with one each of these this is an ascended form that's what they call it and this is Cadore a-- so we are going to have one each of these behind our screen all right you can at any time during your turn sleeve any card you have in your hand with these advancements and you can put multiple advancements in a card the only restriction is you can't have two of the same type of advancements ok all right the game the graphics on that ah right here at the bottom see these little dots like I'm not gonna sleeve it but if I were to sleeve Ghidorah see how that little orangish Jam isn't how in that hole I don't think that's correct though I'm off see how that is manageable that means you can never play another card on this one that also covers that whole gotcha ok but it's pretty it's pretty clear when you do it what you're doing alright and when you put a advancement into one of these cards you change potentially what the card does alright so for example if you had this advancement and you sleeved it that 3 is now at 12 all right it's free to you you can sleeve any cards as you want and you can play that then as a 12 as a single 12 or if you can pair it up with other cards a pair of 12s or whatever but note when we're done with the round it's just gonna go back in the deck and get shuffled and it goes it just is distributed again you might get that 12 back you might not so any card you sleeve is yours for that round guaranteed but then who knows okay and there are other numbers that you can do that there's all kinds of stuff in here you can either subtract from a number or you can add to a number and note that those are two different things so they cover two different gym holes at the bottom all right and if I if you wanted to put both of these in here you could again they don't it's free to do you can sleep as many as you want anything and there are other things like that all right then there's the two that we start with plus some others these are special power cards they do not cost you anything to sleeve you can just put them in but they do cost you power chips to play ah so here is a card here's bunny and what bunny does is this card counts as two copies of itself and it's right here in the corner and this costs you one power chip to activate not to sleeve just to activate so if I were to sleeve this and pay one that is now a pair of threes and if I had another three to go with it it would be three threes can you play the card without activating it you can any time you play a card that has a power chip on it and you play it as just itself without acting the power you gain a power chip oh that's it that is the other way you gain power chips the main way you're gonna gain them is when you go out mmm but the other way you can gain them is and you're most likely going to do that either because you have a thing you don't like but it's more likely you're playing cards someone else leaves in the previous round you've got reshuffle then it came to you and the power either you don't want to use or you might be out of power chips all right do you get power equal to the number of them there or no just one power chip yes it's the number down there okay so for example see how that says zero and that says to this one cost to power chips to play so if I didn't use it I would get to channel we just get one okay you always only get one all right okay this one I think is called edge this basely card is wild if it's played in a set so on its own this is still a three but with any other card this is why so that could be a pair of tens and again it would cost you a powder chip to make that happen all right she reverses the direction of the pile numerically so if you played an eight and I played her on a 9 or an 8 no I can't play her on a 7 the reverse doesn't happen until after the card is played but if you played an 8 and then I played a 9 with this card we're now going back down instead okay so you do play it with a 9 it just as long as I play I'm not saying a 9 I'm just saying with a card that's gonna be higher then correct okay so you have to be playing with a quickly does a 3 you're playing it without the power and you take the 1 1 power chip correct but a member on Mike's 8 I couldn't play the 3 and of course as I understand I'm just saying if you play it as a 3 that's when you because you're ignoring whatever its value isn't just taking that special power that's on the bottom when you play that card correct that power by the way stays in place for the rest of the for the rest of the round right until somebody's unless somebody changes the direction in the other way and you can play it so let's say Mike played a pair of twos I could play a pair of threes with a regular three and one of three that has Charlie I think is what she's called and then that would that would then reverse the numerical direction the pile okay you don't they don't have to both have that power on it does that make sense yes Oh haven't I explained these guys are strange so you gain a victory point if you win the pile it costs you one to play and I guess you just have to track it hmm which is a little odd but those are all the ones that are in here let me talk about the ones we all start with a Senate form is the most powerful of all of them that's why it costs you to play it beats all other plays okay so when you play this card the only thing that can beat this is another ascended form otherwise it's gonna go pass pass pass this a scented form beats all of the plays so if you played tutus and you pass and you played two fives I could play a single ascended form on the two fives and win assuming that no one else plays in the Senate form okay regardless of the number in the corner correct okay the number in the corner now no longer matters nor does the number of cards played okay okay it is basically the dragon in the tea chief in a way except that it can also be played on like floor of a comment if you want to alright so that's a scented form and then finally so what I haven't explained is at the beginning of every round we do what's called the upkeep phase and the first thing we check in the upkeep phase is if you have more than six power tokens you must spend four of them and swap it into a victory point if you have six or fewer power tokens you can optionally opt to cash in four of them for a victory point but if you have more than six you must do that mmm the next thing that happens is if you have K Dora you can decide to play it Ghidorah is in one of the cards in your hand and Kaduri is like calling teach you and teach you it's a bet you're going to put that in front of you you can't do it the first round because it costs two victory points and Cadore is a bet that says I'm gonna go out first just like in teaching and if you do you basically double your bet and if you don't you lose your bet playing kageura also means you have one fewer card in your hand so this is the only time you can play adora that's why you do not get the power chip for playing dora during the round because it is not a power you can use during the round okay Wow okay I don't like that at all so once you've accumulated ten victory points or more which can happen during the round because there are some cards you can do it via your Cadorna bet or via these little spy guy things and you go out first you win the game so that the game doesn't drag on forever after the sixth round or rather at the end of the sixth round if nobody has ten victory points or has gone out first then the person who has gone out first on the sixth round if they have the most victory points they went automatically but if someone else has more than them ten or more then those two or three or four four we tied four players play one final heads-up around okay and whoever goes that first that round is the winner okay that's the game's way I think of just saying listen I have this drag on too much that is the game take one of each of those please and we also start with one random one of these by a string all right Nikki that's for you thank you so much listen I'm not looking like her not looking likes and the rest of these you go Nikki's nope please fill in the bag okay he didn't say he didn't look so I did it alright set for the very first round of the game the rules say whoever most recently dressed up in a costume goes first I am ugly whoops I did not I have not I didn't go out the whole time for fun yeah no she doesn't have to be Halloween I know but I haven't just dressed up some the heck of it either oh what's is there another one nice me just doing randomly really none of you I really wish that I could say that I have dressed up recently but I dressed up last year that was problem that's done you that would probably count that's that's for you Daniel I remember you have three of these behind your screen right so now if I want to play the bet one I can't play it because I don't have to but I would have ascribed I would do it right now you have to do it now during the upkeep phase okay I'm just gonna go just gonna play a one I'm gonna go oh yeah - then I points live it replace can you get one of these one upgrade card I get three no I lose a point one power to him I lost and to upgrade cards something why were you out anyways could you have played it no I was out I was gonna lose like you guys are all going before me that's what the out was you Nicky get one power one Ricky point to power tokens and you get two of these and you've already lost your point but you get two power token here we go I'll give you some over here and you get three upgrades and all the cards come in the bill deck to be shuffled even in this yep yeah and Lincoln when we get the cards dealt out you as the player who came in last will be in the next round now for the record any of us could have beaten Mike before going out by spending to power tokens and playing our Senate form upgrade yep so but obviously we're saving that yeah yes I don't want to blow that yeah I want to vote for something good I would agree but you could have played that on my three five sweet huh and just gone out what surly I also agree it was early and going out first gets you know power tokens right so like burning like Mike has one right now yeah yeah but he can get power tokens during the play just playing the cards by playing cards with powers on them but not using did you shuffle these I did I don't know about that all right up cute does anyone have more than six power tokens no would anyone like to make a khador of that I'll have a cadeau bavette I don't I don't believe I will ever be capable of managing mass okay hmm oh man I want to try it so bad but I can't these cards trick otherwise if you are Nikki go out first you don't have and you don't have ten you don't get yourself to Tannen in the middle or you don't get yourself to ten then that you will face off against whoever has the most which would be Lincoln right now okay depending on where we go out during the round right if Lincoln goes out last for example any won't but it's not whoever has ten or more it's ten not Dan Carson and then you would play just against each other whoever does that first wins right that's how the game works and obviously that's built-in in case people just can't get to ten and go out but I agree it's it's a little unsatisfying well it's just odd I mean I was hoping that would somebody would you know I I was kind of hoping you'd get out because I knew my hand was not good I wish I got well once Mike went out it didn't matter anymore because you'd had that you could have ten right yes but I've been in the same though right I had a chance to go out second but I didn't care at that point once a might no doubt you would have one right if he'd gotten it tenth if he got in that single point yeah going up or going Orica Dora yeah but if you got a kid Ora I would have tried to stop you more I mean I wasn't really trying to stop you because I I knew that I couldn't go out first right yeah my night was not good but I just got a few admit that I would have tried to make Nikki go out first in the group by essentially never skipping her the way say Lincoln's give you completely that's a nice actual tactical thing in this game what did you think nicotine I enjoyed it it's funny it's the first rounds always like your average trick-taking follow the lead but as soon as people start adding in there the modifier cards and all that stuff the game just goes crazy wild insane I like that there's this kind of trump card in it also that you know once you use it you maybe could get it back but it's not I once I got rid of my guy I never I didn't see him again till this round and then I didn't have oh I know you gave him that I got a lot you got the he got the 18 every time I said no I guess I got twice at the oh yeah Wow yeah yeah I never saw that again either huh round 2 we drown before we'll be played that was round 6 okay oh yeah that's right huh I really love it it's I do love the insanity of the deck as soon as it starts to get crazy I liked playing there's only four of a kind in the thing and we had five or six of its kind there yes a modifier and I could admit more I was so tempted to play the this bird counts as two calms himself for no reason I didn't need it well other didn't to say if I played six ones instead of five ones you'd be less likely to have six Oh mind if I start I mean I had a lot of power ones Meredith I almost start just loading him in just to play him just to get the power to right but I was like I I didn't want a monkey with that right you know it's like I never thought about that because yeah yeah yeah the car to get on the chip I thought about for a long time connected yeah I kept thinking about a thing about my K I don't want a monkey with that yeah I think it's a fantastic game I love it yeah do you yes Wow well I'm the outlier this is the I guess second or third time I played this and I love the idea of this game I hate that it just slows down as the game goes well it's the stuffing of the cards and then and then seeing stuff is hard too and there's nothing you can do about it I just wish that they made some of this somehow more bold but I don't know what they could do it is kind of magic like right you know as far as legibility but it's still hard like this doesn't stick out enough to me that there's three modifiers in that one day I dug it out yeah that's the one the one that went yeah but you also want to point this out right so this month this modifier whatever it is give us her the number one finger in her hand yeah a different modifier gave her this little puppet on his hand like all the modifiers actually I usually add to the picture she's got here she is normal and then the modifier put a glove punch boxing gloves right or a puppet hand in this case yeah I love I love the or that and wizards background yeah yep in general especially a car especially like a trick-taking card game it's not like a board game board game and a trick-taking card game I want the game to if if possible to potentially speed up as it goes along or maintain that sort of same pace okay but this game just it kind of it arguably bogs down it while you're trying to figure out your combinations go and try to put stuff in and then the next player because they don't know what you're gonna do now they have to react to what you did so there's no you can't necessarily I know I started I started we love and I realized oh I can't do that because then people be questioning pulling sleep stuff out of the sleep but you saw me that round before pre-loading on your dad but that's because in my mind I didn't care if it was gonna win or not win for me I was gonna play five ones yeah so five ones I just thought well while they're playing let me save time and set the five ones up now and hope that I mean I had a an ascender what is it but I already further the name ascendant yeah I had one of the you know automatic wind cards so I figured I could get in and then play my five ones well I I mean it's the same thing I I had the same kind of little frustration there too because I I kept wanting to I'm like well I'll do that no I can't do that yet I don't know and if I have to change my mind right that's the one thing that I think is odd too but I still think it's really fun I love the insanity of the deck you know so Dave what if you treat you just said making a trick game where it's really fast-paced there is a time like it there's going to be 30 seconds between players turn now I don't want to do that to the players because what if you have this great combination I don't want to stop you from being able to see it it's not it's not just the thinking the thinking actually doesn't take as long it's wow and then this leaving yeah makes oh wow man fix well or or just sort of your hand to beginning when you get to the last round I know to see like Nikki missed that one being a tool Ivor I missed one in sorting you saw me in them ran around with oh wait this goes over here like plus twos and the - fours or whatever are you're right the the graphics are tough ish sometimes to see well especially when they get thick the one card that has all those yeah it's hard to see just because it's because of all the plastic is so deep it's really great it's always a weird balance but that was me getting to and it's always a weird balance I think I played it as 11 to skip my previously with games like this and trying to balance the art on the cards or versus the information on the cards and there are times when you know not so much not as much this game but we played other game or games especially where it's like hey give me like 30% less art and make this type bigger yeah yeah you know it's tough because you don't want the cards to have no art or Oriya or because then it then it is dealer hood as much information on the card as you can yeah yeah but the art in this is fat test yeah art is half the fun of it right yeah I don't I like the game to me is has enough funny going on in it when you can lay down five ones and all that I don't happily the delay it that I don't mind the delay and I got a you know set up my card I got it rethink the math here because it's to me it's just so it's just fun it's funny when someone can set up - is to make a thirteen into a nine and all that kind of silliness yeah I played my eleven at one point as a wild card for the one or two a maybe the for a three or something well I wanted another one right yeah and it got the card out of my hand right I don't dislike the game by the way I mean I still had fun and I would absolutely play it again it's my one play it I was just disappointed this time like the first time I played this I I enjoyed it more okay now that I played it again well I played that game with you and I think the knowledge of the game is increased right right the knowledge of the powers that the combos and all that stuff you it only complicates as you K as you know the game more and it's especially frustrating if for example let's say you get skipped four times so now you're not even playing and then you're just sitting there watching somebody go that's frustrating that's just part of the game I'll say I don't know a really nice part of the game and to me it's an unfortunate part Skippy doesn't I think it's I think it's I don't mean the skipping I didn't waiting oh the waiting is unfortunate I don't mind the skipping it's just like playing you like assume that six cards Nikki P oh it's about Chucky stupid cats cute yeah they did they did do a nice job with art and the cards are definitely fun okay now it's saying there's a lot of subtlety in the combination of the cards you still learn stuff even this I mean each game there's a lot of combinations you don't think about it and how something can beat you all right let me look really quick at the two-player rules [Music] I want to see how the shuffle the cards and then yeah so if it were just if you guys played it out we would shuffle other cards and we would just give ten to each of you yeah okay so then that means you're not gonna get all you're not seeing all those cards and then whoever of the two of you did worst in the previous round would be the start player okay and then you just win the hand regardless of points at that point you're just playing for the win okay so well well cool Dave thanks for
