De Loys' ape is a racist hoax that doesn't deserve the title of cryptid.

hello again guys and welcome back to another installment of cryptid profile and today I have a treat for you guys with the first of my cryptid profile videos where I discuss one of the literally hundreds of human-like ape-men that are claimed to exist all around the world from Australia to China to the United States I'm gonna talk about a rather perplexing ape-man that allegedly has actual evidence to support its existence and kind of gives me an excuse to talk about a period in history that I find pretty fascinating and I am talking about the deloitte ape of 1920 odds are few of you have seen this photograph and with good reason the photograph is legitimately super creepy looking and unsettling regardless of its context but few probably know the real history regarding it well that's where I come in so sit back and enjoy from about the late 19th century to the early to mid 20th century there was a boom of popular interest in the West notably in European countries in the United States to quote-unquote explore the also quote-unquote uncivilized world with efforts mainly focused on the unknown regions of Central Africa Central America and central South America which to this day in some regions remain largely isolated in remote with little contact with the outside world unfortunately not all these expeditions were done for purely scientific reasons it certainly seems like a lot of these expeditions were made with intentions to exploit the ecosystem and the peoples that lived in them and although most of the time it seems a large portion of these expeditions were largely fruitless public interest in such adventures was huge brave adventurers would often venture into the jungles and return with wild tales of strange creatures treasures and lost cities and would make a major profit from book deals and media attention concerning their stories the mysterious and intimidating jungles of South and Central America where an exceptional breeding ground for such characters from the British explorer Percy Fawcett who was depicted in the great but pretty inaccurate 2017 film lost city of Z and claimed to have encountered everything from Neanderthal like eight men giant spiders man-eating piranhas to kaiju sized anacondas and claimed that an ancient pre-columbian city was created by light-skinned civilized Native Americans existed somewhere out in the jungles of Brazil he only later disappeared mysteriously into the jungle in 1925 on an expedition to FA Mitchell hedges who allegedly discovered a crystal skull in a temple of Belize - Aloha wander well who travelled around the world and attempted to find both Percy Fawcett and his lost city of Z and to our very own francois de lewis who is the main subject of this episode and these are probably the more interesting ones there are literally dozens of other explorers from around the same time as it seems like an adventure into the unknown jungles of the Amazon was just a thing rich Westerners did back then these men and women wrote books and movies that painted the picture that they were like real indiana jones' adventures traveling in lawless lands and encountering outlandish creatures and people but it was pretty exciting and inspiring to read about their stories and a lot of these men eventually did go on to inspire the actual fictional character of Indiana Jones in later decades and I have to say there's something very quaint about exploring the unknown and seeing the wonders of the world and it's probably one of the reasons I really love the Indiana Jones series however in retrospect there often was known too little evidence brought back from their adventures to support the claims they made and as it turns out modern scientific scholarship over a hundred years later has found that a lot of these guys were not at all Indiana Jones's there are more like Indiana Jones's brother the high school dropout but decided to make a quick buck by mainly making up stuff and hoping nobody would be smart enough to call them out on it and look over a hundred years later some of these hucksters and Kahneman are still fooling people Percy Fawcett turned out to probably be a straight-up liar when looking back at some of the claims he made especially about Native Americans and his real writings reveal him to have been much more of a racist than velocity of Z paints him Fawcett seems to fabricate a whole manner of ferocious creatures from man killing electric eels who in reality have never killed a person two man-eating piranhas who in reality have never killed a person to the hairy neanderthal like cavemen he claimed have encountered to the technologically advanced Native Americans with their own metal swords all this probably to make his story is more interesting than they really were mitchell-hedges straight-up carved his crystal skull using modern technology likely in the German town of Hyder Oberstein and had the audacity to pass it off as the real thing a claim his just as crooked daughter had the gall to continue until their death although often heavily romanticized in pop culture this period in history had in reality not a lot of things that came out of it that were too scientific or humanitarian but that's not what we're talking about today we are focusing on the specific story of a single one of these adventurers the Swiss oil geologist Francois day-lewis from between 1917 to 1920 Francois Deloitte's undertook an ambitious expedition to survey for oil around the river Terra or Terra on the Venezuelan Colombian border in South America the expedition was a complete and utter failure the terrain was heavily forested and mountainous with most of the 20 member crew dying of disease additionally the region was inhabited by a reportedly hostile Native American population which ran into conflicts with expedition contributing to the body count of the 20 crew members only four survived according to device one day well can't be near the Terra River too large hairy creatures approached them from the dense forests the creature is one male and one female were bipedal upright walking covered in dark reddish fur lacked a tail and were very monkey-like in appearance they held branches and shrubs and when they encountered the expedition grew increasingly angry and irritating defecating into their hands and flinging their own feces at the team as predict tiles Deloitte's and company responded by shooting at the creatures and their guns killing the female and driving off the male with one dead the team examined the body only to find that animal look nothing like what they've seen before Deloitte's noted it resembled a spider monkey but left a tail and was much larger claiming it was 1.5 meters or about five feet tall when Deloitte's examined its teeth he counted 32 teeth which contrasts most new world monkeys which have 36 teeth Deloitte's posed the creature on a crate and used a stick under its chin to prop it upright for a photograph giving us the nightmare fuel we have today after taking the single photo de LOI sand team skinned the body and wanted to keep its bones in Pelt for further examination when they returned to civilization however either due to the troubled nature the expedition such as the boat capsizing or flood damage or - alleged mistreatment such as the skull supposedly corroding away after being used as a salt container yes all traces of the creature but the photographed were destroyed or lost upon returning to civilization apparently Deloitte's kept or forgot the story of the mysterious ape to himself for nine years it wasn't until 1929 that his friend the anthropologist George Montandon was flipping through de luces old journals that he discovered the infamous photograph on tendon was Vince that Deloitte's I discovered an entirely unidentified creature and should be shared with the world it seems did Loyce was very reluctant to reveal his counter with the creature and only revealed it once after being strongly coerced by Montandon delicious's account was told in the highly sensationalized article found at last the first American which was published in the Illustrated London News a rather unreliable paper George Montandon claimed that the creature was a previously undiscovered primate which he named the Mareth employees Lloyd Z Montandon claimed the creature was a missing link a South American primate that was the ancestor to the Native Americans of South America hey wait a minute oh yeah I almost forgot to mention that George Montana was a big promoter of racism and anti-semitism and his teaching probably influenced that of Hitler and other anti-semites of his day yeesh Montana was a Nazi collaborator and published several awful books such as his own how to recognize the Jew and help set up the Jew and France expedition which was essentially a huge big convention for racists to just guess really guess be anti-semitic Montana was likely assassinated by the French Resistance in 1944 and I can't really see him too sorry for deserve Montandon promoted and supported this at the time seriously regarded scientific hypothesis on human origins known as the holly genesis hypothesis that pathes a-- suggested that different racial groups of Homo sapiens did not all share a common ancestry but all convergently evolved independently from different primate species the white race evolving from early fossil Homo sapiens Africans evolving from gorillas Asians evolving for orangutangs and and EH is this bad Montandon essentially needed an ape-like primate in the Americas to be the quote-unquote ancestor to the quote-unquote red people or Native Americans and alloys azeip was apparently it ignoring the fact that Montanans theory is entirely racist it's flat-out incorrect but it was unfortunately very popular at the time and was especially popular in the context of Europe in North America during the mid 20th century however not everybody who was on board with Montanans ape-man notably the anthropologist Sir Arthur Keith was a major critic of the conclusion he knew exactly what was in the photo monkey manipulated by deloitte something subsequent experts have agreed with he noted that the photograph suspiciously lacks any reference in it for scale to prove that the creature was as big as Toulouse claimed the photograph additionally only shows the animals front leaving open the possibility that the tail was hidden or cut off additionally the unique teeth count claimed by Deloitte cannot be confirmed due to the fact he lost the skull furthermore some have noted that the stump to the right of the photograph is that of a banana tree but any trees are not native to South America and likely would not be found in the remote and dense jungle claimed by Deloitte suggesting the photograph was taken nearer to civilization than Deloitte's claims all this is strong evidence that tool isis ape in actuality was just a hoax modern scientists overwhelmingly agreed that the subject is merely a spider monkey that has been intentionally or maybe even unintentionally positioned or manipulated to look like something more special than it really was it seems like the mastermind behind all this was Montandon who tried to pass the animal off as his missing link to support his racist views I think Deloitte's originally didn't intend for this to happen and his role in the hoax was relatively small mainly being manipulated and strong-armed into a false story by his friend I kind of feel bad for Deloitte if this is the case here he is just showing his buddy his family scrapbook and his buddy goes hey how about I use this to promote my racists theory of human origins an elaborate scheme or maybe it was just a racist jerk who was totally on board with all thing oh well in conclusion did Lewis's ape is just another hoax to add to the pile of South American early 20th century adventure hoaxes right next to that Crystal Skull it is very clearly a spider monkey likely a white bellied spider monkey that was manipulated to look more ape-like than it really was it's certainly a disappointing one on the list as I think it could be actually fascinating if new world monkeys did in fact in virgin leave all with hominids in Africa as it certainly could be possible if environmental additions were right heck lemurs did it with gorillas on the island in Madagascar cm Cosman has Illustrated his own depiction of a what-if scenario in which the delay ape was actually a new world monkey as convergently evolved with humans but again unfortunately the whole thing was just like the crap that a flung at deloitte a load of BS but then again I think this story even though not true could make an absolutely amazing movie again I love these kind of adventure movies and maybe you could make it even a bit of a horror movie like Cannibal Holocaust or something I think that scene where the Apes come out flinging their own nasty would be completely terrifying if done right maybe even have it be revealed to be a hallucination or something and have the movie beyond de luces struggle to survive in the jungle and slowly lose everything including a sanity to nature as he struggles and sacrifices the lives of his men in order to save the monkey remains only to lose them and the end and find out they were nothing special and he's wasted everything for nothing nightly style and that's why he never was enthusiastic about telling a story or maybe have him be straight up a con man who faked the remains of a desperation because he was too ashamed to return home empty-handed BAM ready to script now and anyways on that note thank you so much for watching this video I hope you enjoyed my in-depth analysis on the Deloitte's ape make some more suggestions for more cryptid profiles in the future I will see you next time darkness shrouds the full risk as the birds announced the dark on three travelers fought the river in South wood Jenny Don
