in today's video we're going to tell you how we lost 17 lbs on a cruise now it was actually three back-to-back cruises lasting a total of 33 days we're going to tell you all about our diet Secrets what we did what we ate and how you can have dieting success in 2024 while traveling the world and living your best life we're John and Bev and we are the retirement Travelers if you're just finding us we are a senior travel couple who are traveling the world full-time in retirement we also have a website where we blog our adventures so check out our website and be sure you sign up for our newsletter while you're at it and if you're wondering where we are as we travel the world check us out on Instagram we always keep it updated to our current location yes so now we're going to talk about what we did with this crazy crazy idea that we had we started out traveling in Europe in August and we worked our way across northern Europe and down to the Mediterranean uh we were getting on a cruise ship to go to Israel and Egypt and it was the celebrity Apex it was the cruise ship that we ended up getting on but this Cruise uh obviously made a detour and we went to the Greek Islands and we went to Cyprus and turkey and kind of had a little bit of a change after that we were planning to get go to Turkey and then head back through the Suez Canal on our way to the Middle East where we were going to be for weeks well all that changed you know and since we were on the celebrity Apex we decided to check it out and see where it was going next turns out that after Athens it was going to Barcelona and then a repositioning Cruise back to the United States so to make a long story short we just stayed on the celebrity Apex for 33 days a total of three different cruises and did that instead of going to the Middle East so we knew that uh staying 33 days on a cruise with our past history lot of eating a lot we needed to do something a little bit different which kind of set up this challenge yeah and we we are not always the best eaters we do try to eat well but we had packed on a few extra pounds and we knew the holidays was just going to you know make it even worse so we set some rules for ourselves and we decided let's get on this cruise and can we do 33 days and instead of gaining a half a pound which is what the average Cruiser gains per day on a cruise that we would try to do it and not gain any weight then we kind of thought well what if we could lose a few pounds that would be awesome actually go into the holidays uh you know th feeling better and healthier and you know all of our other cruises that we've been on we usually come out of it you know not feeling not feeling so good we usually overeat uh you get the drink package and before you know it you're just you're you're you're not happy pack on a few pounds packed on a few pounds so we decided let's let's take take this Challenge and there was really three main areas that we decided to really concentrate on for 33 days and and the first one was eating right uh and we chose the Mediterranean diet great place since we were in the Mediterranean you know number two was we were going to try out intermittent fasting and number three is we wanted to make sure we get plenty of exercise and we thought if we did those three things you know good good things might happen so let's talk about the Mediterranean diet what is it well it's all the craze it's been all the craze for the past 20 years probably it is a plant-based diet that mostly you know you eat vegetables and fruit grain whole grains nuts a little bit of meat red wine things like that but you don't eat fried foods you you know you try to stay away from sugar yes sugar and lots of stuff like that we also did the intermittent fasting and the intermittent fasting is a little different and it's kind of the newer craze yes and and what that entails is going a period of time each day where you do your eating and a period of time where you do no eating and so for us you know the people take it like to different levels you can do 16 hours of no eating and eight hours of eating or you know that type of thing what we did was uh about 18 hours or so we would eat at noon and 6 each day yeah and that worked out pretty well because breakfast was the the part we could cancel now it was the one that was the most tempting with the fried foods and the waffles and the whipped cream lots of whipped cream whipped cream has been my downfall in some previous cruises that and lots of cheese mac and cheese but let's talk about what we did for exercise first before we tell them what all we ate that's right so the first thing they have a world class gym there so I usually started the morning off pretty early and would go up to the gym uh sometimes running on the treadmill was a challenge if the Seas were rough you kind of had to hold on uh but there was lots of good equipment and now we have to say you are a big Runner so John's a runner and he can run an hour or two at a time and that's kind of the extreme for most people they can't do that yeah but but John always does that even when he's eating badly and packing on the pounds so he kind of had to keep that up I had to keep as far as what I did I didn't do that I didn't go to the gym and live in the gym the whole time I probably should have and I probably would have lost more weight if I'd been in the gym every day but we kind of made some rules as we went the first rule we made was no no elevators the entire 33 days we were on the ship we never took the elevator we climb the stairs so it didn't matter where we were staying on the boat we still had a lot of stairs every day how many stairs do you think we did not that I was counting or anything but it was 171 steps from the third floor to where the food was on the 14th floor and we did that M we did that a lot so our watch actually uh calculates how many floors you do each day and we probably averaged in the 30 to 40 floors a day on the cruise and and I definitely did all of that I did go to the gym some but I didn't live in the gym and so as we talk about this John ended up losing 10 pounds he was very good and I lost seven so even not going to the gym every day I still did okay yeah I still lost weight the the other thing we did when we had um Port we would stop at a port is we would just plan in a hike we did some killer hikes on S sanini and and Gibralter and we always tried to get out and and hike for or at least walk around the city for a couple hours uh when we would stop at a port so the three things worked out pretty well good diet good exercise and the intermittent fasting so so let's talk about the rules we made so besides the stairs we also decided not to drink and uh we didn't do alcoholic beverages now I will say that a couple of times uh at dinner we had a glass of wine which is permitted in the Mediterranean diet that's right so we didn't really break a rule uh but John's kind of a Beer Drinker so he didn't get much beer did you no I got zero zero beer and and let me just say one thing about the drink packages on cruises okay generally we have done them in the past but you have to drink like six drinks a day just to pay for it and we're kind of you know bargain hunters and I feel like well I've got to I've got to have six beers if to pay for it and that's kind of the wrong approach if you're trying to lose weight when there's buffets around the corner so we decided to just you know cut out the alcohol and we honestly didn't didn't miss it a bit no we didn't miss it at all most cruise ships have one big dining room at night you can eat there sometimes lunch or breakfast but uh the way the celebrity Apex is set up is that they have uh restaurants like four restaurants instead of one big one but the atmosphere is a little different and it's really really beautiful they also have specialty restaurants but but what we found that we loved was the cafe where it was buffet and generally buffets are kind of hard on people when they're when they're on cruises or buffets in general yeah yeah what what we found that they had a great selection of um grilled vegetables they had a entire area that was nothing but grilled vegetables or roasted vegetables and they would go and slice you a piece of squash or zucchini uh or broccoli or beet or had great sweet potatoes so we always started there fill our plates with that yeah beside that there was usually you know grilled fish or chicken usually we had two different fishes that we could choose from every meal great yeah great selection of fish a huge salad bar uh you didn't have to put all the dressings on they had plenty of good variety there but I did when I had a salad I had a lot of dressing on I guess I did have a little Caesar salad so we didn't really other than we just tried to avoid the fried food and we tried to avoid a lot of pasta and rice we had a little bit of it but not very much and so we tried to stay away from the cheesy mac and cheese there was a lot you know the it was probably the most challenging part for me when they had lobster mac and cheese and I had to walk past it and not put it on my plate that was tough yeah that was tough well the dessert bar was very hard to walk by it was just full of beautiful desserts but we had a bigger we had a bigger goal we wanted to see if we could do the cruise and and and not gain weight so that made it a little bit easier I think and after the first cruise we weighed in and we realized that we lost a few pounds and so that kind of motivated us keep to keep going they have no sugar added ice cream all the time and that did not taste good some the chocolate wasn't bad the vanilla was shaky not good we'll just say it it wasn't good but the but they do offer on their on their Buffet a dessert menu that off always offers some gluten-free options and also some sugar-free options and we did take part of those yeah they Al they also had some sugar-free cookies at one of the cafes after lunch small Cafe yeah so we would we would stock up on those uh you know occasionally you know to have with yeah they were made with the aval and oatmeal they were Glo free uh no sugar added and so we just thought okay if it's the bill of whole grain the other thing did as far as the drinks is we're kind of we we drink a little too many Diet Cokes and we decided to give that up as well so our drinks on the on the boat were basically water coffee and unsweetened tea yeah and that's pretty much what we had for 33 days and and it was fine you know we did great we did great with we were actually pleasantly surprised I was you know little concerned going in that there would be enough good foods for us to eat um but we were overwhelmed uh at how good and healthy the selections are basically it's all up to you if you want to eat healthy on a cruise you can if you don't want to eat healthy on a cruise you can do that too and we've done both ways and honestly we enjoyed the healthy option much better it made us feel better and uh it's the way to go yeah and so our thought is about this we we talked a lot about this on our trip about how could this be incorporated into people's travel plans well you can always take a couple of cruises back to back if you're wanting to travel full-time and kind of uh this is a great way to do it but also I just think it would be fun I can I have girlfriends that I know we would have so much fun taking a month Cruise somewhere go hop on the Mediterranean and go cruise together and just hold each other accountable I've looked at the uh these Wellness Resorts that offer you know a kickart to your diet and sometimes those are about $1,000 a night night and you can actually get on one of these cruises for about $100 a night and sometimes even less so we probably we probably averaged about $100 a night do you think or little less than $100 for the you know food transportation and lodging now there's some additional Services uh for like massages and things like that that are a little pricey on the cruise we chose not to do those you know we spend we do most of our massages in Southeast Asia where it's cheap um but yeah so you can do that but you bottom line is you can go on a cruise and kind of make it a a Fitness Spa Cruise do it very very reasonably and have a great time yeah you really can the entertainment on this Cruise was great we swam we sat in the hot tub we we just had a great time on this Cruise so anyway that's how we did it and uh we hope that we've inspired you to take some cruises and uh you know eat right when you're on one that's right be sure to hit subscribe and follow along on our
