in jesus name give the battle to the lord it belongs to him amen amen [Applause] thank you thank you we've had a great uh four weeks with special speakers and i've enjoyed every one of them but i have to tell you i had to come back to work to get some rest and uh it's more fun to be back in a routine take your bibles turn to hebrews chapter 12 hebrews chapter 12. the title of my message this morning is never ever give up i don't want to begin with a question i want to ask you a question i want you to be judgmentally honest don't don't give the answer you think i want to hear i want you to give the answer that's really true if you were at a football game and your team was down by 32 points and your starting quarterback was injured and it was the third quarter how many of you would leave the stadium and go do something else raise your hand be honest i mean i would but that might be a mistake back on a cold january day in 1993 that's exactly what happened at rich stadium in orchard park new york it was the afc wild card game and for all practical purposes the game looked over before it started the houston oilers remember them they built a 28-3 halftime lead with the help of four worn moon touchdowns the final nail in the coffin came just moments into the second half when houston's strong safety bubba mcdowell intercepted a pass and ran 58 yards for another euler score faced with watching their team losing by 32 points many fans made their way to the parking lots while the bills were headed for the record books what they didn't know was that the greatest comeback in nfl history was about to take place buffalo's backup quarterback frank wright playing in place of injured jim kelly led the charge they began the incredible rally with a one-yard run by kenneth davis on the ensuing onside kick buffalo bill's kicker steve christie miraculously recovered his own kick and frank wright took over from there he called me direct at the offense connected first with don beebe then andre reed for three more touchdowns steve tasker said i remember looking into the stands in the third quarter and seeing so many empty seats but when we made the comeback people were climbing the fence trying to bust back into the stadium with just under three minutes to play the bills were ahead 38-35 but houston came back again and with seconds left in regulation the oilers al del greco tied the score with a 26-yard field goal to send the game into overtime early into overtime defensive back nate odoms intercepted a pass from warren moon and set the stage for steve christie once again to kick a near perfect 30-yard 32-yard kick it sailed to the uprights and the bills came back to beat the oilers 41-38 capping the greatest comeback in nfl history never ever give up the new testament's full of metaphors i'll save you some time there are no football metaphors in there but there are a number of other word pictures used to describe the christian life for example jesus used agrarian metaphors like when he talked about the parable of the wheat and the tares there are also a number of military metaphors endure hardship was a good soldier of jesus christ second timothy 2 3 put on the whole armor of god ephesians 6 11. paul even used boxing to illustrate the way he lived his life he said i do not box as one beating in the air i don't just waste my time first corinthians 9 26 paul loved using athletic metaphors like running in a race remember first corinthians 9 24 he said do you not know that in a race all the runners run but only one gets the prize run in such a way as to get the prize i love the fact the apostle paul encourages us to run to win he said you're in a race so run to win you know he wasn't into participation trophies in fact there's not one half of one verse anywhere in the bible that supports participation trophies and we've raised a couple of generations in our world who believe that if they just show up that's good enough they don't have to run to win they don't have to struggle they don't have to fight they just showed up so so that's enough i win right wrong we don't know how to run to win anymore we know how to run away in wine we've jumped we've raised a couple of generations of people with no work ethic they don't know how to work and and oh be very careful don't you ever suggest that they might not be doing their job right you can't judge me you can't coach anybody anymore that's criticism that's wrong you can't do that right we've brought this whole mess under ourselves and now we have paychecks you don't even have to go to work friend that's not what the bible teaches the bible teaches us ii thessalonians chapter 3 verse 10 if a man won't work don't even let him eat let's see what we've done we've changed the race we've changed the rules and we've become a nation or a country or a world of fools that's not what the bible teaches the bible teaches never ever give up and we're about to find that out in our text today the hebrew writer used the uses the same word picture paul does he uses a race and he talks about running and his point is never ever give up would you stand for the rehab god's word hebrews chapter 12 beginning in verse 1. is it ironic to anyone else here that the text that we would be studying in this study from the book of hebrews which started almost a year ago we would happen to be at this particular text on kickoff sunday no one's smart enough to plan that except god therefore since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses let us also lay aside every weight and sin was clinging so closely and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us looking to jesus the founder and perfecter of our faith who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising the shame and is seated at the right hand of the throne of god consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself so that you may not grow weary or faint herded if you want to summarize everything the hebrew writer wrote in those first three verses you could summarize it this way never ever give up you may be seated and may god add his blessing to the reading of his word verse 1 begins with the word therefore and i've said many times before if there's a therefore we need to find out what it's there for he's connecting what he's about to say to everything he's just said in chapter 11 and even the previous 10 chapters as well and he begins by talking about the cloud around us you see that in verse 1 therefore since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses who are these witnesses abel and enoch and noah and sarah isaac and jacob and esau and joseph moses and joshua and rahab gideon and beric and samson and jephthah and david and samuel and the prophets and many more who are not even named and the hebrew writer says in chapter 11 verse 38 the world was not worthy of these people john phillips said the scene is out of a great stadium the grandstand packed with spectators each one of whom was himself an overcomer in the race what a galaxy of the great is assembled there each has run the course and it's triumph each wears the laurels of victory from out of the past they look at us as we stand at the starting line or press forward down the track what an incentive to win to persevere to the finishing line to make it all the way he says ken hughes said the scene is a great colosseum the occasions of is a foot race a distance event the contestants include the author and the members of his flock and by mutual faith us the cloud of witnesses that fills the stadium are the great spiritual athletes of the past hall of faith members everyone a gold medal winner they are not live witnesses of the event but witnesses by the fact that their past lives bear witness to monumental persevering faith that is like abel's faith though he died yet he still speaks everyone everywhere one looks in the vast arena there is a kind face nodding encouragement saying i did it and so can you you can do it you have my life for it moses strokes his long beard and smiles rahab winks and gives a royal wave but here's what you need to know ladies and gentlemen they do it from the pages of scripture not from the padded seats in a stadium somewhere the cloud of witnesses is in god's word it's a word picture for us paul said in romans 15 4 for whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction that through endurance and through the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope john macarthur said it's so much better than i can he said to have a whole gallery of such people looking down on us would not motivate us but paralyze us we are not called to please them they are not looking at us we are to look at them nothing is more encouraging than the successful example of someone who has done it before seeing how god was with him encourages us to trust that he will also be with us the same god who was their god as our god the god of yesterday is the god of today and tomorrow he has not weakened or lost interest in his people or lessened his love or his care for them we can run as well as they did it has nothing to do with how we compare to them but in how our god compares with theirs because we have the same god he can do the same things through us if we trust him this cloud of witnesses are examples they are not spectators they are not judges this is not like dancing with the stars or the olympics or your grandson's soccer game where everyone watching has a reaction to every play and they either approve of it or they give you their coaching tips on what you should have done no it's not that this cloud of witnesses are in the scriptures they have gone before us they have triumphed they have run the race well and we should be encouraged by their example and their encouragement so it begins with the cloud around us but then he talks about the challenge given to us he says therefore since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses let us and he's getting ready to extend a challenge in fact if you're reading your bible carefully you'll notice there are four challenges not just one the first one is implied get in the race scholars disagree whether this is addressed to believers or unbelievers i believe the truths primarily apply to christians who are already in the race but the invitation is to everyone if if you want to win you have to run and if you want to run you have to be in the race and that begins at salvation and i believe the next three challenges make it clear that first one is implied number one get in the race here's number two let us also lay aside every weight most serious runners train with weights but when it comes time to run in an actual race they they get rid of them that's why the hebrew writer says let us also lay aside every weight chucks vandal said the greek word translated race is aegon it can also be used in the sense of a struggle or a fight the christian life is not a game of hopscotch nor is it a short sprint it is a hard exhausting marathon to make it to the end requires us first of all to set aside anything that might hold us back or weigh us down the word translated encumbrance or weight is on costs and it literally refers to that which hinders one from doing something what's hindering you from running the race what's keeping you from living the christian life successfully whatever it is you need to lay it aside you need to get rid of it i love what dr allen said he said in the first century a.d runners ran in the stadium virtually naked that'd be interesting he says they they came to the stadium wearing long flowing colorful robes but at the start of the race they discarded all that why so they had very little hindrance at all kent hughes said what is a hindrance to you may not be a hindrance in any way to someone else a hindrance is something otherwise good that weighs you down spiritually it could be a friendship an association an event a place a habit a pleasure an entertainment an honor but if this otherwise good thing drags you down you must strip it away what is keeping you from running the race what is hindering you from living the christian life you need to lay it aside you need to get rid of it then there's a third challenge he said lay aside the sin which clings so closely the niv says the sin that so easily entangles is there a sin that keeps tripping you up you've tried to get victory over it you promised god it would never happen again but but it keeps entangling you it keeps it keeps tripping you up now i want to be clear all sin is definitely a hindrance to living the christian life jealousy envy anger unforgiveness laziness hatred lust pride ungratefulness one commentator said the use of the definite article the sin seems to indicate a particular sin and if there is one particular sin that hinders the race of faith it is unbelief doubting god doubting and living in faith contradict each other he says unbelief entangles the christians feet so they cannot run it wraps itself around us so that we trip and stumble every time we try to move for the lord if we try it all it easily entangles us when we allow sin in our lives especially unbelief it is quite easy for satan to keep us from running now i know some of you will say well unbelief's not my problem i believe in jesus i'm a christian i'm not talking about that that's not the kind of unbelief we're talking about we're talking about the unbelief that's that's doubting god they say well god can't handle this this this this is different you know you know i've prayed about this for a long time and god's never done anything this is something i'm gonna have to do on my own well i just don't believe i just don't believe this is going to turn out the right way that's the kind of unbelief and jesus said one time is anything too hard for god nothing is impossible for god the fourth challenge he said let us run with endurance endurance the race that is set before us now the word in the original language is who pomona so what does that mean it means a steady determination to keep going continuing when everything within you wants to quit have you ever been there have you ever given it all you've got have you ever done everything you knew to do and still it wasn't working out you said there's just i i i i just don't i don't have the i don't have the fire power to go forward i can't there's nothing i can do but quit have you ever been there i've been there hoopo monet is that that's something inside of you that says everything in me and everything around me is telling me to quit but i'm not gonna i'm gonna keep going never ever give up now a lot of people start out great they start out awesome and then they flame out they they give out or they give up too soon you you ever know people like that they're gonna follow jesus they're gonna be involved in the church they're gonna they're gonna live for the lord they're gonna they're gonna convince life their or her life to him and then they start looking at the at the old life and the old friends and the old ways and the old fun and they just decide you know what i you know i tried that but i'm i'm gonna go back and if you ask them they'd tell you they still love god but they're not in the race they're not running they're running away paul said in 1st corinthians 9 do you not know then in a race all the runners run but only one receives the prize so run that you may obtain it every athlete exercises self-control and all things they do it to receive a perishable wreath but we an imperishable paul says you know what i'll be different about christians we realize that eternity is attached to our race and whatever we go through whatever we experience is going to be nothing compared to what we receive in eternity that's why we keep running now while we may run with others we never run against others you and i are not in a competition in this race we're running together and we don't run in our own strength either the holy spirit helps us he he empowers us remember zechariah 4 6 when god said not by might nor by power but by my spirit says the lord of hosts chuck's vandal said we're to run with endurance the race that is set before us the saints of old did it hebrews 11. now we are to follow in their well-worn path of faithful endurance the the path is before us we don't know where we'll lead how long it will go whether it'll be uphill or downhill smooth or rocky wet or dry but faith is trusting god during the uncharted course knowing that he has set before us the path that will best contribute to our growth towards spiritual maturity while running this course it is necessary both to be driven by faith and to be drawn by hope i love that driven by faith drawn by hope that's the point of everything the hebrew writers saying in verses two and three and now he says not just the cloud around us not just the challenge given to us he says i want you to notice the champion before us he says looking unto jesus the founder and perfecter of our faith who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising the shame and is seated at the right hand of the throne of god once again john macarthur says it better than i can he says in in running as in most sports where you look is extremely important nothing will throw you off your stride or slow you down like looking at your feet or the runner coming up behind or the crowds in the stands the christian life is very much like this james put it this way he said a double-minded man is unstable in all that he does you you may think you're a multitasker and you have the ability to do all these kind of things and and the bible says if you're trying to do all kinds of different things you're you're you're unstable a single-minded man and that's what the hebrew writer is saying what is the single thing we need to do look under jesus and he and and he makes it so simple here he says when you look to jesus number one you look to his person you look to his person now the word for looking in the original language is affirmative it only occurs here in scripture it's the only time it's used in the bible so this must be really important it is really important so what does it mean it means looking away from everything else and looking at that which can only fill the heart you know what that word means it means that nothing else can satisfy us or fulfill us but jesus we'll look at all kinds of other stuff and boy it isn't our attention drawn away so easily squirrel he says don't do that look to jesus look to his person we run the race and we run to win but we don't do it for the crowds and we don't do it for the crowns we do it for christ our champion that's who we're running for he's the founder and perfecter of our faith he's the author and the finisher of our faith that means he he completely created this race he completed this race therefore jesus more than anybody else knows how it ought to be run we'll keep our eyes on him i like what dr phillips said he said the same word used for author or founder is really leader suggesting that he is going to remain a pace or two ahead of us all the way to show us where the obstacles are and to direct every step we take remember the story of uh shadrach meshach and abednego and king nebuchadnezzar said then we put three men in that fire i see a fourth man and he looks like the son of man you know why he looked like the son of man because it was the son of man jesus was there with them friend listen if you're if you're running the race or you've got off the track or you're saying well i don't know where god is you need to look to jesus you got your eyes on the wrong things got your eyes on the wrong stuff got your eyes on the wrong people look to his person but the hebrew writer says that's not all look to his passion he said who for the joy set before him endured the cross despising the shame no runner ever had to face the obstacles jesus faced no runner ever went through the ridicule that jesus had to experience yet he kept running with his heart fixed on the joy that was set before him so what was the joy set before him pleasing his father the realization that he was going to be reunited with his father david put it this way in psalm 16 11 in your presence there is fullness of joy at your right hand are pleasures evermore but it wasn't just that there was also the joy of being crowned with glory and honor and having all things placed under his feet we saw that in hebrews chapter two verses six to eight and then there was the joy of bringing many sons and daughters to glory hebrews chapter 2 verse 10. did you know that you coming to christ was one of the things that kept him going the fact that he could look down the corridor of history and see that you would one day say yes i'll give my life to jesus that's why he kept running that was the joy set before him so the hebrew writer says we look to his person we look to his passion we also look to his position do you see that the hebrew writer said he is seated at the right hand of the throne of god now he didn't say he wants to be seated at the right hand of the throne of god he's looking forward to being seated at the right hand throw god he didn't say he used to be seated at the right hand of the throne of god he said he is seated at the right hand of the throne of god by the way the hebrew writer began this letter in hebrews chapter 1 by saying that jesus was seated at the right hand of the throne of god chapter 1 verse 3 and now he repeats it here at the end of the letter jesus isn't going anywhere he is seated at the right hand of the throne of god now the phrase he is the perfecter of our faith means he completed it he he finished it so what does that mean it means jesus is the preeminent example of faith there has never been a walk of faith like his no one's ever done it like he did it john 17 4 jesus said i have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do john 19 verse 30. he said i i it is finished from the cross the work was done the race was won paul said something similar when he was about to die second timothy chapter four verses seven and eight he said i've fought the good fight i've finished the race i've kept the faith he endured he said henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness which the lord the righteous judge will award to me on that day and not only to me but also to all who've loved his appearance now i know what some of you are thinking you're saying well pastor that's that's great that's inspiring that's i'm just so excited about all those people who did that but i know me i can't do that there's no way in the world i can make it to the end i just know i mean i know me but on anybody else i can't do it consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted consider him first of all keep considering jesus how did he do it no one ever faced what he faced no one ever endured what he had to endure but he finished the race and he's our example he's our encourager he's our champion consider him every time you get ready to quit you just need to realize you know what i've got my eyes off jesus i need to get back i need to i need to realize what he did and what he went through and how that encourages me second you need to know you don't have to do it in your own strength now that's a blessing paul said in galatians chapter 2 verse 20 i've been crucified with christ and i no longer live but christ lives in me the life i now live in the body i live by faith and the son of god who loved me and gave himself for me he said i'm not doing this in my strength i'm doing it in his i keep my eyes on him remember several years ago i was a bible college student and we traveled up to ohio and and on the way back we uh we had two cars and the people behind me said we don't have much gas and we don't we don't have any money and i said you just keep following me and i'll pull into a gas station and i'll fill your tank for you i didn't have much money either but at that time i remember we pulled in this gas station i said it's a good thing you pulled in because it it's empty there's a light on there you know we didn't have the highfalutin cars we have now that say you have 16 miles until you run out of gas or then you know my car will come up and say why are you driving like a fool again you're about to run out of gas no i'll tell you the little thing that comes up on my car all the time is please take a break all they had to do was follow me and i'd fill their tank listen that's what that's what jesus does for us just keep following him and the strength you don't think you have he'll give it to you right when you need it have you ever been around people he said i don't know how they i don't know how they respond like that i don't know how they went through that like that god gave them strength for every day you don't have to do it in your strength [Applause] i don't quote from the early church fathers very often but i will this morning saint augustine said this bishop of hippo one of the early church fathers he said pray as though everything depended on god and work as though everything depended on you by the way he went into participation trophies either he didn't say just just show up you're good just be there you're good no you pray as if everything depends on god and you work as if everything depends on you you ever heard of johnny erickson tata she's 71 years of age she became a quadriplegic at the age of 17. and you may be wondering how in the world has she been able not only to walk the walk of faith as a quadriplegic but how she'd been able to keep her faith she's written an international bestseller she's been featured in a movie she started a ministry to address the needs of families affected by disabilities she's traveled all over the world she's spoken to tons of people she started an organization called wheels for the world providing wheelchairs and mobility to people affected by disabilities all over the world she has a she has a worldwide impact to a number of ministry organizations but she's still a quadriplegic how has she done it how she kept going i'll tell you how she's done it she's kept her eyes on jesus you ask her she'll tell you that in fact recently she said this quote the first thing i plan to do on resurrected legs is to drop on grateful glorified knees i'm going to thank jesus for the race he gave me to run wow friend listen you want to get the place where you'll never ever give up you get your eyes on jesus and watch what happens and you run that race and you run it to win and watch what happens [Applause] i feel like forrest gump this morning that's about all i have to say on that so let's pray before we move into a time of prayer with our church online family i want to encourage you that if god is working in your life today and you would like to make a decision you can either text the word next to 55757 or you can go ahead and connect with one of our hosts in the chat right now would you pray with me father we thank you for today's message we thank you for a church that believes in church online and a church that stands upon your word and father i pray that god if you've worked in our lives today and that you're convicting and encouraging us to step forward in our faith whether it's to accept jesus for the first time that father right now we will do just that father maybe we've ran off maybe we've tried to run away from you or run away from the calling you've placed upon our lives and father today we need to turn back around and come back to you and father today if we need to rededicate our lives i pray that we will connect with someone online one of the ministers and we will let them know our decision father today may be that we've accepted jesus already but we've never showed the world around us we never showed our community we've never showed our family and today we need to make the decision to make our faith public through water baptism father whatever our decision is i pray that we will take a step forward in our faith and our journey with you it's in jesus name we pray amen once again if you've made a decision today as you're watching church online you can text next to 55757 or just go ahead and jump in the chat and engage
