Cross Back Apron Tutorial

hey everyone Lisa from farmhouse on Boone calm again and Myka here and today I want to show you how to make something that I made in a recent tutorial for kids and today I want to show you how to make it for adults and that is the linen pinafore apron after I shared the tutorial on how to make the kid's pinafore apron out of linen I had a lot of people say hey where's the adult version I would love an adult apron so that is why I decided that I will go ahead and make that tutorial and then I'll have one so I bought some denim colored linen fabric and for the girls linen aprons I had picked up some linen that was actually a blend it's a lot cheaper and I wasn't sure how it would go but I thought I would try it and it turned out just fine I could hardly tell the difference between it and then 100% women that I made my dress for which I showed you in a tutorial how I made a linen dress just by copying some clothes that I had and that was 100% linen and I made the aprons in a blintz so I thought I would do that again just because it is so much less expensive and so I'll link below where you can find the fabric because they have it in a lot of colors on Amazon so here's my linen that I picked up it is the Coffman linen blend Kaufmann brand the designer I guess it is on Amazon I like that it is blue and neutral you know it will go in my kitchen so it'll be hanging in my kitchen on some hooks and so I like that like I said they have a lot of other different colors so this is my linen so we're going to start by cutting out the pieces which I will insert the Cutlass here so that you can see the pieces there's going to be a main apron piece two straps a ruffle piece which is optional to add and two pockets so go ahead and cut out those pieces from your fabric [Music] to prepare the strap piece go over to a machine and fold it in half along the long edge and sew a half inch seam [Music] pull the strap right side out to do this attach a large safety pin in the corner and then work it all the way through until the raw edges are inside [Music] use an iron to press the seam and the fold flat [Music] run a top stitch down both long sides of the strap to make the seams lay flat [Music] repeat all of these steps with the other strap piece next to prepare the pocket piece fold one edge down a half inch and press with your iron and then another half inch to hide the raw edge inside this will be the top of the pocket where we also for the other three sides just fold it in an inch not worrying about hiding the raw edges inside because they will be inside the pocket on the apron now to prepare the long ruffle piece just fold one half inch over and then another half inch to hide the raw edge inside this will be the hem of your apron if you are doing the ruffle option [Music] next prepare the main apron piece first fold down the top edge a half inch and another half inch this is one of the long edges this is where the straps will go after that do the same on the sides and then do the same for the bottom if you're going to be adding a hem now if you're going to be doing a ruffle leave that bottom long edge open because that is where you will attach the ruffle [Music] next so down the top of the pocket now this is the part that you folded over 1/2 inch and another 1/2 inch so just so that one side down just like all the other seams in this project I'm using a half inch seam [Music] next sew down the hem of the ruffle now this is where you press it over a half inch and then another half inch to hide the raw edges inside on one long end we're gonna leave the other end open because that is what will put the gathering stitch note that I sewed together two pieces for the ruffle because I didn't have a piece long enough to make the entire ruffle length since the ruffle won't be attaching to anything on the sides I also folded it over a half inch and another half inch and added a half inch seam there as well so down the two short ends of the main apron piece with a half inch seam and also the bottom if you're going to be doing the ruffle option we left the top unsewn because this is where we're gonna put the straps in so place them thirteen and a half inches from the outside hemmed edge of the main apron piece and then sew them in place now I'm showing you how we're gonna actually put them up so that they face away from the apron and then sew there as well the two straps should be about six inches apart in the middle and you're also going to want to sew that little area as well so from one strap to the other and next I'll show you where to place them on the outside part after they are crossed over when you're facing the apron and it's facing down take the right side and pull it over and then take the opposite strap and put it underneath the pressed edge and pin it in place [Music] do the same for the opposite left side of the apron and pain the other strap in place [Music] so far we've only sown the middle where the two straps were so the rest of the way over to the outside straps so that you catch them and so the rest of the top hem in place make sure it lines up with the outside edge and then we're going to go ahead and flip it up and sew it so that it faces away from the apron just like we did with the center straps [Music] repeat the same process with the other straps that it faces away from the apron [Music] next we're going to attach the pocket pieces so take the top of the pocket which is the hemmed edge and place it 14 inches from the top of the apron and 10 inches from the side of the apron be sure that the pressed edges are tucked underneath and pinned the pockets in place [Music] the two pocket pieces should be two and three-quarter inches apart next sew around the three edges of the pocket pieces leaving the hemmed top part of the pocket unsewn this will be where you'll actually reach into the pocket [Music] [Music] next we're going to put a gathering stitch in the unhinge edge one of the long edges of the ruffle piece now to do this you should increase your stitch length as high as it will go and your tension this will make the ruffles pretty much make themselves now I like to start and stop my gathering stitches a couple times along a long piece like this in case a thread breaks or something when I'm trying to gather it together I won't lose the entire thing pull the gather strings until your ruffle piece matches in length the bottom of the main apron piece then line them up with the raw edges together and pin in place [Music] now it's time to sew the ruffle piece to the main apron piece now my tip for keeping ruffles looking nice is to sew as close as possible to the gathering stitch so the further away you get from it the less pretty and nice your ruffles will look so make sure to stay really close to that original gathering stitch [Music] [Music] [Music] next finish off the raw edges where you attached your ruffle to the main
