hi there I'm Kate from Nancy's notions today I'd like to show you how to create an easy to sew reversible apron using the crisscross apron pattern this is such an easy apron - so there's no strings no ties no neck band to worry about and an apron is just what I need to celebrate tie one on day which comes the day before Thanksgiving this is a day dedicated just to giving you can participate in this year's tywin on Day by simply wrapping a loaf of freshly baked bread or other baked goods in an apron you've crafted yourself and feel free to tuck in a small note of encouragement into the pocket to bring joy to a neighbor a friend or a person in the community who might need a little help [Music] once I have the fabrics positioned I'm ready to place the pattern which I've already cut out I'm lining up the center fold of the pattern along the center folds of the stacked fabrics once I have my pattern weights in place I'm ready to start cutting out we need to mark our pocket placement guide we'll slide this out of the way I'm just going to cut right across at the top of the pocket I'm placing the crisscross apron bands near the lower edge of the remaining fabrics so I can keep the rest of the fabric intact for another project they might make really cute parts for table runner or pot holders something fun to make a stronger reinforced pocket I've cut a pocket pattern from a lightweight interfacing this is going to get fused onto the wrong side of the pocket piece and I will interface all four of the pocket pieces then we're ready to clean finish our top edge of our pocket once this is fused we're ready to edge finish our lower edge only of both apron pieces and also if you haven't already remember to mark for your pocket placement and it's just a few marks also while I was finishing the edge of the apron I also finished the top edge of each of the pocket pieces now I would have four pocket pieces I'm just showing two right here but both would be finished now I'm using a thermal thimble because I really need to have my finger close to the iron to help in this pressing I'm pressing over just a quarter of an inch and that thermal thimble is just the perfect protection for my finger I can really get the iron close without burning myself and I'm going to press all the way around to the top edge of the pocket our next step is to press over a 1 inch hem along the top and the pocket and tuck that quarter-inch under and repeat this for the three remaining pockets I'm going to locate my pocket placement area and align my pocket corner right in that area then I will go ahead and pin all the way around I have already stitched the hem of each of my pockets all along the top edge and I'm going to show you the stitching of the pocket on the apron front where I have the yellow polka dot pockets edge stitch right along the curved edge of the pocket all the way around and I'll repeat the same for the next pocket as well as the pockets on the other apron front our next step is to add the apron bands to the front sections of the apron at the sewing machine we're going to stitch a quarter of an inch I'm using a very high contrast thread normally you would want to use a thread color that won't be quite as noticeable but this way you can see what I'm doing we're now ready to start assembling the apron I'm taking my second apron and placing right side together and aligning all the edges what we're going to be doing is stitching along the long outer edge we'll then Stitch the curved all the way to just the top of the band extension so right up to there then we'll come across leave this open stitch down all along the neckline and up to the opposite end of the band leave this open then we're going to again stitch all the way down kind of our armhole of the apron and up stopping at that top edge and then we'll simply stitch the last straight long seam so each of our apron ends the long skinny ends will remain unstitched I need to trim and kind of grade the seam allowances in all the curved areas of the apron that I've judged so at the armhole area the neck curve here and the other armhole and this will make it much easier when I turn the apron inside out and start pressing to get a nice clean edge I'm going to turn the apron inside out we'll just go through the lower edge of the apron and then pull the apron bands through I'm going to go ahead and press my seams flat on these two band ends and then I'll turn under and continue pressing and press my lower hem both layers of the apron and they'll be stitched separately so you'll have kind of a tube happening but I'm going to press about a half inch hem allowance just be consistent on both apron fronts and backs we're ready to create our crisscross straps bring one side over and then take the opposite front insert that back strap right into the front and I'm just going to pin it to hold it together then we're going to take the next back strap fold it over and then take the opposite front band strap and then just place that over the back and we have our crisscross I'm going to pin that as well I will now stitch right across securing through all the layers to hold the strap in place and we're also going to stitch our hem at the bottom of the apron then I'm going to top stitch around all the other edges that have been pressed and then we're finished for me this project has been especially fun I actually have a recipient that I can give my apron to and it brings back memories of my grandmother this apron was so fast to put on and I always wondered as a child how she could change from cooking in the kitchen on Thanksgiving Day to being absolutely perfect serving turkey at the dining table so this was really neat and I hope you enjoyed
