there are times that you say jesus can't you find another girl to sing your song but god knows you're not the only only ones who can sing his melody but he has chosen you to bless you just to lead you into what is worse for you stand and sing with me live for jesus that's what matters for another's house i'm crumbling yours is strong live for jesus that's what matters they will see the light of me they will see the light in you they will see the light in us and curve along oh they will see the light in me they will see the light in you they will see the light in us hallelujah live for jesus that is what matters if you believe that shout amen if you believe that shout another amen you may be seated we thank you my dear sister for stern our hearts with that song my brothers my sisters all i greet you in the powerful name of jesus christ our lord and our king i want to greet the moderator reverend reed the members of the nec and all the departmental heads all of you pastors sisters and brothers musicians chaplains i greet you in the mighty name of jesus we gather here this afternoon before one altar seeking to consecrate ourselves to one god we gather here with our different giftings our different callings our talents our experiences and we bring them all as gifts to almighty god i congratulate all those who will be receiving your credentials today i am proud of all of you so we pause long enough to seek to discern the voice of god from the text that was read earlier from acts chapter 20 from verse 18 and permit me to reread a few verses from the new living translation hear the word of the lord paul as he addressed the elders of ephesus when the elders arrived he declared in verse 18 you know that from the day i set foot in the province of asia until now i have done the lord's work humbly and with many tears i have endured the trials that came to me from the plots of the jews i never shrunk back from telling you what you needed to hear publicly and in your own homes i have had one message for jews and greeks alike what is this message the necessity of repenting from sin and turning to god and having faith in our lord jesus christ and now i am bound by this spirit to go to jerusalem i don't know what awaits me except that the holy spirit tells me that in city after city jail and suffering lie ahead but my life is worth nothing to me unless i use it for finishing the work assigned me by the lord jesus the work of telling others the good news about the wonderful grace of god this is the word of the lord let us pray heavenly father we bless your name for this gathering in this first major session of our convention we thank you for the songs of praise the riveting testimonies the experiences of all gathered here i prayer god that as we seek to serve you we go to your word for wisdom we go to your word for inspiration so we pray for that wisdom now and we pray for that inspiration so bless your word unto our hearts of god and glorify your matchless name and we all say amen we all say amen i want to share with you my brothers and sisters around the theme embrace your gospel assignment embrace your gospel assignment every believer has a gospel assignment paul was acutely aware of this and he never lost sight of it so in this text we hear him summing up his gospel assignment hear the words of the great apostle my life is worth nothing unless i use it for finishing the work that has been assigned to me by the lord what is that work the work of telling others about the good news of the wonderful grace of god another version puts it this way that it is the work of testifying the gospel of the grace of god as reading some comments made by ed stetzer about his own understanding of what the gospel is and it captured my heart hear what stetson says he says the gospel is the good news that god who is more holy than we can imagine looked upon with love people who are more sinful than we would possibly admit and he looked and he sent jesus whose love is more extravagant than we can measure he sent jesus to die and through his death and his resurrection we gain new life and eternal life and new purpose for us to embrace our gospel assignment we must understand what the gospel is my brothers and sisters to be on gospel assignment is to live every minute of your life in christ as a grateful response to the gift of salvation that god has blessed us with i love what two writers say in relation to the gospel the writers say that many christians have a truncated view of the gospel and so here walker and the tune when they say that many people believe that the gospel is a doorway but not a pathway there are others who believe that the gospel begins and stops with an initial step instead of the gospel being a lifelong journey that believers are on another way that we limit the gospel is that when we think about gospel assignment don't sometimes you normally think only of members of the clergy that it is really pastors missionaries specially anointed evangelists who are on gospel assignments but can i declare to all of us this afternoon that all of god's redeemed people are under the weight of gospel assignment if you are a recipient of the gospel then you are on assignment every recipient is on the gospel assignment so when you look in the book of acts that we just read we encountered the apostle paul as he paused for a moment on his third and the final missionary journey we hear paul giving an account of his journey to the elders from the church in ephesus and paul was very clear that his call was from god his assignment from god and that nothing would detour him would distract him would allow him to swerve away from fulfilling this divine assignment let me ask us if we are to fulfill our gospel assignment what approach should we use what attitudes should we embrace and share a few with us as we reflect if we are going to fulfill our gospel assignment then we must embrace this assignment with humility we must embrace our gospel assignment with humility christian service that is uncovered in humility is a powerful and effective there is no stronger and a firmer platform on which we can stand to give of our gifts and talents to god than on a platform of humility humility has to do with viewing yourself in the proper manner regarding your gifts your abilities your purpose your weaknesses and your limitations paul said to the ephesian elders i have carried out the lord's work with humility in fact another version says when paul was testifying where paul says i served you with great humility hear what paul was doing paul was acknowledging his gifts his calling his talents but at the same time as he served the people he was acutely aware that no matter how many how many gifts you have no matter how talented you are if you are not dependent on the grace of god and if you don't yield to the power of god then that will amount to nothing paul was confident but he was never cocky or conceited she knew the work that god had done and was doing in his life paul's humility led him to give up many of life's comforts he gave up prestige he gave up positions for the glory of almighty god in fact we hear paul saying i count everything as loss for the surpassing knowledge of knowing who jesus christ is if you're going to fulfill your gospel assignment for god's glory then be humble closed yourself clothe yourself with humility when we are not humble we will miss the gospel opportunity that every call and every appointment has when we are not humble we will become more concerned about being recognized and being celebrated we will choose careers and companions based on pride and not based on the call of god in our lives right my brother praise god humility is a christ-like character trait humility allows us to see people and not their status humility allows us to appreciate people no matter where they are from what they have what they achieve or what they have not achieved humility makes us appreciate the gifts that people pour into our own lives humility says i am not better than those that i serve humility says i do not have a sense of entitlement i deserve no special seat no larger space humility values others and expresses deep gratitude when others pour into your life pride is repulsive heaven rejects pride humility opens the door for us to pour into the lives of others so here paul in philippians chapter 2 do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit rather in humility my brothers and sisters value others above yourselves not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others let me tell you in this age that we are living in where everybody is bigging up themselves we need god's grace to cultivate and hold on to a humble heart true humility comes out of a deep relationship with god and that an appreciation for the measure and the depth of the love and grace of almighty god true humility will say every day here i am i don't deserve to be here but i'm here by the grace of god is there anybody who can raise your hand and say i am having on this color for the grace of god i'm dressed up but for the grace of almighty god give him praise someone so candidates humbly yourselves humbly yourselves before the lord and he will lift you up go low and god will lift you high get on god's promotion plan by humbling yourselves in the eyes of god god resists the proud but he gives grace to the humble can somebody praise god if we're going to carry out our gospel assignment not only must we do so with a spirit of humility but we must embrace our gospel assignment with what i call joyful tenacity we must embrace our gospel assignment with joyful tenacity hear the words of paul and when you listen to it you can't get around it you cannot ignore it paul says i served you with tears i have never hesitated to preach i am compelled now by the spirit i go bound to jerusalem i don't know what will befall me but the spirit told me that anywhere i go funds and afflictions will come but here hear the tenacity hear what paul says but none of these things can i hear the church say none of these things but none of these things move me neither count i my life dear to me so that i might finish my race with joy can i hear the church show joy so so paul says none of these things move me because i want to end right i want to end with a bubbling spirit i want to end knowing that i did so willingly and passionately to the glory of almighty god joy is a deep rooted confidence and a deep-rooted delight that stems from knowing that we belong to christ and that christ is in control of our lives and our destiny therefore joyful tenacity is choosing to respond to external circumstances with inner content and satisfaction you know why because we know that god will use all our experiences to accomplish his work so we remain joyful and we remain tenacious when you have joyful tenacity you can handle the tough seasons of life when you have joyful tenacity you can handle those moments when tears wet your eyes tenacity of spirit empowers us to endure opposition hardship and the trials when we are tenacious it means that when all manner of evil come up against us we stand in the name and authority and power of god and we declare we shall not be moved because the lord is with us my brothers and sisters can i just remind us this afternoon that we will meet upon opposition as you carry out your gospel assignment we are living in a secular space we are living in a space where people get upset when you mention the word hell and people laugh at you when you mention the word heaven people people become hostile when you raise up the saving grace and power of jesus christ but can i find some believers who are joyfully tenacious that no matter what no matter what kind of secular devils you face you're gonna preach it anyway you're gonna preach jesus anyway you're gonna carry out your assignment to the glory of god this requires perseverance and a sense of intentionality so it's a joyful tenacity is a little more than having a good time in church tenacity is toughness and the determination you cannot fulfill your gospel assignment as a musician as a leader as a chaplain as a pastor a careful failure assignment if you are weak and whimpish and any liquid thing that don't go your way you're willing to leg on a decant position give up this sunday school class if you are serving god and if you are under holy assignment it doesn't matter what come your way your case is fixed your mind is made up i am under holy orders somebody give him praise somebody give him praise when you're on the gospel assignment there must be fire in your soul there must be fire in your spirit when there is coldness around you something down inside of you is telling you to go on when you are under gospel assignment and you have joyful tenacity and the burdens of ministry and the burdens of life weigh you down you find yourself standing in front of the mirror morning time you're alone in your bathroom and you gotta talk to yourself and you say press alongside persecution you must bear tires and crosses in your way but the hotter the battle the sweeter the sweet of the victory so i encourage you for the joy that is set before you keep on witnessing for the joy that is set before you keep on being a good example of what gospel living is all about for the joy that is set before you keep on preaching and finally if you're going to carry out of a gospel assignment and do it effectively we must do it with a sense of humility we must carry it out with joyful tenacity but we must also do it guided by a sense of missional clarity that has received to carry out the assignment that god has given to us we can't be fuzzy in our heads we can't be fuzzy about who has called us about what our assignment is we have to be clear so we hear paul saying i have had one message and this message is the same for the jews and for the greeks it's a message of repentance it's a message against sin it's a message calling people to turn from sin and turn to faith in our lord jesus and then we hear paul saying so that i might finish my course with joy and the ministry hear this which i have received from the lord can i just pause there and say that which we are called to do the call comes from god any dear you miss will call you then you are going to be in trouble our gospel assignment comes from god the the word missional is all about believers having this strong missionary sense wherever you go when you when you say that that you you are gripped by a missional call it means that you don't have to go firing to consider yourself a missionary you realize that in this strange secular place you're a black pilgrim and you're on your way and you're very clear that you're here for a season and you're here for a reason and this season you have no control over but the reason is very clear to testify of the goodness and grace of almighty god can i ask you then to adopt the posture of missionaries paul was clear about his about who called him all when the spirit tell paul you say down the road trouble can read you paul says that it is the spirit who has captured me and anywhere the spirit leads me there i will go can we find some teachers in the church of god who will infiltrate our school rooms with an understanding that you're not just looking promotion you're not just collecting a paycheck but you are on gospel assignment can can we find some teachers who no longer hang out in the classroom when devotion is going on can we find some more teachers who will become a part of christian movements in your schools can we find some some parents who are on gospel assignment that you are on the pta no matter what is going on a group are your take it over because you know you are here on assignment can we find some singers and some keyboard players who are saying this is not about style it is not about making a name for myself it's about exalting the name of jesus i will sing in fth i will sing a nude fellowship big stage small stage i am under holy orders so brothers and sisters have missional clarity do not allow anyone to detour you distract you or pollute your call make sure that you're clear you know i closed this the words of dick hillis missionary to asia he says that the way he approached his mission work is that he says every heart that has christ is a missionary and every heart without christ is a mission field can i then ask you with this sense of clarity wherever you go if people have jesus then become a part of a mission team with them if they don't have jesus they become a ready harvest field may the lord anoint and bless us to carry out the mission in this season and for his glory you are under holy orders god bless you [Applause] [Applause] you have certainly expressed your appreciation to the administrative bishop for such a very strong word to all of us it's not only those who are being credentialed but i think the bishop spoke to the church this afternoon to god be the glory so let us remember that we need to approach our assignments with humility we must approach it with joyful tenacity and we must also approach it recognizing that there is a missional clarity that is attached to this assignment [Music] i think i can hear this song man says i must have the savior with me for i dare not walk alone i must feel his presence near me and his arms around me thrown and this is a part that is important then my soul shall fear no ill praise god where he leads me i will go without a murmur and his footsteps follow still let's think on these things praise god we're moving into another segment of the evening's proceedings my brothers and sisters i now invite minister andrea roberts to call the names of the music leaders who will be receiving their serve forgive us lord for those times when we have been enjoying our salvation but we have not been serving you joyfully forgive us for those moments when we have shrinked away from duty forgive us for those times when we have been distracted and detoured away from a path of discipline a path of service a path of selfless commitment lord in this moment we rededicate ourselves to you we pray especially now for the music leaders who have committed themselves to training and equipping they have spent hours increasing their knowledge sharpening their skills so that they can help to lead god's people into meaningful and inspiring worship lord may you touch their voices may you touch their hands may you give each an extraordinary anointing for the task that you have given him or her father we thank you for the community chaplains we thank you for the training that they have received lord so many of our communities are falling apart so many of our communities need men and women for material things for money for prestige for limelight for positions i pray that they will all serve you genuinely raise up amongst them lord authentic servants who will walk around with a basin and towel seeking to lead and to serve your people father i pray that none of these will fall by the wayside we pray against the spirit of backsliding in the name of jesus we pray that none of them or god
