Crawfishing In The Atchafalaya Basin With Kip Barras ( Catch*Cook) Part 1

[Music] [Music] music it's kind of all to [Music] hey guys we're in the chapel basin we're crawl fishing with kit bahraw and his good friend the one and only the one and only guys we're having a blast these guys are catching a bunch of crawfish we're going to be here throughout the day with them oh yeah he's better than last night little one how many people are throwing back those crackers about everybody everybody is yeah because the price is so low this year it's like 60 cents for the drops that's not a good price right normally it's a dollar fifty for that it's too much work to collect them i mean why would you catch them the market's flooded okay the market's flooded the price is low the last year was 175 for the drops okay a different year that when it when that as much coverage on the market depending on how much you have on the market right too much ain't good it all depends on the kitsch [Music] so kim how many years you've been doing this i'm uh 24 no i'm 57 i was doing this you said it 12 years old running a bull with my daddy so how is it now compared to back then as far as a big difference you would catch way better oh the catcher is unbelievable back then if you've never fished four five you couldn't finish four or five hundred times that's impossible it's too much probably in the trap wow there's so much people out here nowadays they burn it up you know right too many humans i guess back in 1973 that's when that big flood here if you remember a big flood i was 10 years old and i remember my dad everything was fishing with two of the two of his buddies and they stacked all the corporation a boat just popped right and somebody had passed and it sunk the booth and it was about 20 feet deep you know they caught every side with a pole you found every side way back there 1873. i was a kid i still remember that i was 10 years old so they would snag in the socks yeah they had a long pole when they they grabbed everyone caught everyone 63 cents that was great that's too much to leave on the bottom back then it was probably 10 cents a pound that was good money back then use the fish for 20 cents 20 cents a pound all number one big select wow if they give them away sometimes i've changed another shipping equipment's got a state all over the place you know it's kind of helping the market right looking for that cause uh if you're fishing for 20 cents again you don't see that anymore 20 cents [Music] so when people come back always with me you want one side i see look their corn fit now they say well give me two seconds that's the first time i see people putting corn in there telling all your secrets okay now i grow my own corn it's like just a regular corn you find a store it's a certain sweetener i grew my own farm are you like common manure and stuff you can't buy this one no you can't fight at the store i raised my own farm [Music] get past different runs throughout the basin how many uh traps do you have any ideas i probably have about three thousand bets three thousand traps i don't run them in the same yeah i just learned different games that's right it'll take me seven days to run a mall you sometimes three four hundred days run in the winter time you run them once a week just normally i work in the summer you can run them two three times a week every year is different i like to leave them fish long because it's got a crawfish i gotcha i don't fish uh small stuff trying to get the biggest ones i can right there [Music] so all right [Music] tender [Music] due to the rain they rained out yeah oh yeah normally they beat right now but this year is their month later oh okay yeah a month behind that's probably not as big but about the middle of next month maybe all select straight wow everything is later this year i don't know why might be the weather mother nature [Music] on that one [Music] see most people they think that uh the pond's getting horde and black you think it's done but they're basing their prime right now that's the best time right now everybody quits eating groceries not in the basement it's different it's almost year-round right yeah you were saying it is when it's a rainy season we fish year-round but our drought yeah it won't happen it's gonna be a wet year [Applause] is that because the water just stays cool because it's deep is that one of the reasons when it gets too hot the bearing is done you know heavy rain like we just had in july august makes it last longer okay that's what you really need the rain when it's low when it's high it's different no good when it gets low big heavy rain prolongs the season okay [Music] it's like 10 to the dozen though me the cleanest one that's the best dude you must be the life of the party when you show up with the prudence basically like huh oh yeah fried shrimp whatever it is oh yeah good stuff fish good stuff the best that i could find louisiana sportsman yeah live up the lane that's it when i was a kid i tried to come to work with my daddy i hated school this is hard work when i was a kid i go fishing the ditches with some crawfish traps like i pull like a troll i troll with a cage my mama come get me with the belt i love crawfish that's awesome didn't get me underwater [Music] a six-foot track dude six foot traps yeah no no it's five quarters i have a few four photos mostly five give me that's the best draft yeah i played around with i think i bought some four footers for the thirty now yeah when they start dying you know they die easier than four foot you can't save them right this is why i put them most of the time they will stick out before they die that's before it gets shallow you can have a little bit of when they stick out you can save them you see if you don't need the water you can't save them when it's clear water hot but it's muddy water it's good they need a cut down there [Music] you got to stick them out when it's right here but it's too deep right now water's too high right you probably funnel you see you fall into the deep right as the water's coming out it starts to dry up on these ridges get funneled to that little sloop nice probably running and freezing so you put just in there it's right now that you're pretty spread out yeah yeah some more ridges when it goes down the water the land comes out and makes them funnel to the deep form that's when you run heavy you're running crazy sometimes like what's the most pounds you could catch a sack they're trapped cool [Music] i'm saying this is a ridge back here it's good yeah there's a hole again it's not right real shallow right they had about six holes faster they're about six or seven right perfect size oh yeah i wouldn't hunt and i was crawfish yeah this is a good spot for deer right here some big boys real little they got trails all over that hot truck let's get mud wet right you wanna hunt i'll come hurt a place like this yo yo you're in the middle of nowhere back here so you always see deer if you come here nobody can't like go mainland how did you get here in the airboat yeah i'll come with the airboat so far and i'll just walk the wrist you can't come to the floor you spook everything out right [Music] i gotta trail oh good i'll walk it and i cut it's easier walking you see it's hard bottom right more space you can't walk even though it's dry as salt but over here it gets hard tried bringing cheddar but he couldn't walk i could see you you'd probably be sitting at a tree going man i couldn't be catching fish i couldn't grab it with them here i'm wasting six hours sitting in this tree you can't even do this that's right that's too much wasted time right yeah you after the money the hell would that 12 points just never see humans maybe they don't know back here not usually seeing a boat back here they don't get educated they're not spooked by humans or you know where to go and deer know where to stay where's seat so is there some dry land somewhere around here where they at right now and where do you think they are like where are they at on the big river the big river yeah and the big river is dry you head towards the river when it gets where they come back to the swamp the bottoms i got you i like that he's got some of the best ball crawfish guys you're gonna have to check his stuff out not only does he catch him he bowls him really good i've eaten been eating this crawfish for years he's got his own seasoning it's good stuff [Music] he's located i sell the traps that's the only restaurant around here go eat it traps and y'all can try some of these yeah these basin crawfish it's fixing to be ball rolls oh yeah from traps now located off the ground in three sword off of highway 90 on morgan right at the tracks go try some of that [Music] tonight i don't know i thought you're going to see john we're going uh you know [Music] i'm going to see uh gary jared uh what's your favorite later on last night i went to traps route 92 the corner ball and you just want to eat it i might keep drinking with you yeah we're going to be over there later on 92 then we're going to get serious we might go tonight at 3 [Laughter] we all a.m we like god we're everywhere got a little girl in school young got a guy in catahoula his name was ernest bellasson he was a bait man but he was all over you know riding the road his wife was doing all the work at the beach up right she had a religion class that little girl just said uh who's everywhere all over all the time that little girl raised her hand she said uh ernest melissa you have to know this cat it's quite yeah it sits like this turn the ground you let it down about again okay when the water is muddy you can let them down more because it won't die when it's clear you got to put them straight up oh okay yeah because you'll die depending on the water conditions even if it's straight up is it touching the bottom still can they get under it to come in now that is good you got to make sure it took you not okay it's got a touch and they gotta touch they gotta crawl in got it when the water is easy to fish you can see your trap easy to say you set them by hand i'll clean these basin crawfish yeah nowhere well i got some climbers little screws screw many trees like a little climber right i got a set in my dick i'll climb the tree as high as i can so i can have service to call in that's how we got out what we called one of my buddies and the phone worked way up there they didn't work down here so i got them a little climbers you know you're screwing the tree you can climb like a deer stand i'll be dope yeah that's the only way that's how you do it you ain't got that you got to walk out and uh when it's low low it's soft you can't walk it takes forever i mean over here you can walk you can't picture that boot right it's too hard hard bottom they don't run early right but you're going to have to swap pretty soft and you can't walk in it quicksand you're going to work to walk out your voice so you better have some help somebody knows they're right you take another airboat to get you and they'd have to know it well like you know how to get back there you know yeah it's a little tricky with airborne gonna break down two batteries wow one's all started it's not open that happens though right when it happens you better be prepared right you screwed you've been sleeping back here ain't no fun never did that before i don't want to do it right so look at this [Music] dude that thing was loaded yeah [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] um huh [Music] pellets yeah oh you yeah the
