Connecting with Connectors -10 Types of Connectors

in the book never eat alone by Keith Ferrazzi in the chapter connecting with a connector he names eight types of professions where possibly you can find these super connectors I've added two more to the list so let's make it 10 so let's look at each of them number one restaurant tours when you visit new city you're always looking for a good spot to eat I know I am there's nothing better than a good recommendation where to go and even if a friend knows the owner or the chef I know a chef at a local steakhouse where I frequent in Baltimore and have a specific waiter that there that I always want to use and I always want him to serve me and my friends the chef and the way they are very connected and they know all the movers and shakers in town so I've made some great connections just because I've made a connection with the restaurant tour number two headhunters this goes without saying their job is to connect their professional matchmakers making a living by introducing job candidates and companies that are hiring realistically headhunters want to be the one contacting you but you could act as a pseudo headhunter when you help land someone a new gig or give them a strong recommendation number three its lobbyist I used to work in my State Capitol right here in Maryland named Annapolis and through one specific contact cuz a Miss Karen he helped me shape and build the base of my business lobbyists are well-informed persuasive and self-confident trust me on this one I've never met a lobbyist doesn't believe in his cause number for public relations PR professionals spend most of their day trying to help their clients get exposure of course that's what they do a PR friend introduced me to some key people and really helped grow my business number five politicians if you know politicians they're Master networkers they have to be of course they shake hands and kiss babies well maybe not in this climate right now but they give speeches in the name of earning trust so you can vote for them what can a politician do for you well even if someone is well-known running for office and even if they lose you can still benefit let me tell you a personal story one of the jobs I landed at Baltimore City Public Schools was because a politician lost his bid for mayor and I was working on his campaign he hired me for the school district you can reach out to a politician they know people in their district and it's a bonus if you live in the district and they can help you with invaluable contacts journalist or news persons journalism has changed drastically over the years but in social circles they are great sources of referrals and information especially on a local level they are reporting stories all the time and interact with many different people on a daily basis on a wide range of topics reach out to a local journalist and take them out for coffee or even start a conversation with them help pitch ideas and you could become a resource to them and they to you number seven influencers you know speakers and social media influencers social media has really changed everything in a publishing industry and it's given a rise to the influencer niche you see them on YouTube Instagram Twitter Facebook and more they're paid to push brands and give reviews and have many followers vanity metrics aside influences can be a good connection if you engage correctly with them number eight fundraisers follow the money are the words fundraisers live by they know where it is what it will take to get it and most importantly who's most likely to give it a fundraiser is a super collector who knows powerful people in many industries you want to make sure you get to know them number nine nonprofit volunteer coordinators these are people who know people on a very surface level but every now and then they can help and they can connect you to businesses and business people think of it all charity events in your area there has to be a volunteer coordinator here's a protip people who are connected volunteer I'll say it again go to these events and you'll never know who you meet last but not least pastors and clergy if you're a member of a church of 10 to 10 thousand a pastor could be a great source of referrals and business for you I remember starting back in tech way in 2000 around the your y2k and churches where I learned how to do many of the things I do now it was my first source of income and referrals and still a place where I worked to this day pastors have a heart for helping as important to tap into their network you may never know who you may meet one day in church creating these ties with these tents connectives may seem hard at first but that's the point we have to get out of our comfort zone to build our networks that we can not only grow our business but help others to really see what we offer it and how it can help them so mix it up seek out people who don't look like you and who aren't in your social circles and one word connect here are four better words connect with the connectors
