Concerns over growing anti-Islam sentiments in the Netherlands

[Music] at a cursory glance it's just another day in the Netherlands but a deeper analysis reveals growing sociopolitical fault lines nearly a million of the country's 18 million people are Muslim and the party that's just one the most seats in Parliament is staunchly anti-islam its leader f wers has even called for a ban on the Quran the Muslim holy book 18-year-old law student Sara akoy has been one of the victims you go to school and you're running for the bus the bus is empty it has stopped and you make it but the door closes on you and you see that the bus driver just looks at you and looks at the road again and that's where I realized that you know I wasn't really welcome she believes the racists and islamophobes in the country are feeling more empowered after the November election Martin de coning is a professor of anthropology he's conducted extensive research on islamophobia in Europe that in the last decade or decade or two we have witnessed a normalization of islamophobia um it has basically become acceptable and definitely not only in the far right uh scenes but it has become acceptable to say oh this or that person is a Muslim that's a red flag we have to do risk assessment or um we don't want him because Islam says this uh and we don't want that kind of uh uh people um that to a large extent has been uh normalized uh we see it in government policies in different countries Professor coning says islamophobia is now so rampant in the west that even academics who expose these realities find themselves in the crosshairs despite all the talk about equal rights for women the majority of those facing discrimination are women according to a Dutch Think Tank 14% of Turkish origin women here complained of discrimination that figure shoots up to 55% for those Turkish origin women wearing a headscarf the European Network Against Racism says these discriminatory Trends are rooted in Dutch Colonial past it says a racist ideology inferiorization figure of 1% Sarah says these statistics hurt and motivate her at the same time she's been a high achiever and is now trying to motivate young Muslim girls to stand their ground and bring about positive change Hass Abdullah trt world the h
