The layout of How a network communicates with different devices is called a "TOPOLOGY" and the most common topology is the "Star Topology" In a Star Topology all Computers are connected to the central wiring point such as a Hub or a Switch and all data on star network passes through the central point before continuing to its destination when is the major benefits of this topology is that if there is one computer failed or if there was a break in a cable the other computers were not be effected because each computer has there own cable connecion however a disadvantage of a star topology is that if central hub or switch fails, the other computers on that central point would be effected and this is called a "Single Point of Failure" if this happens the entire network goes down. this is called bus topology that is topology is very old technology and it is not use today that much. this is kind of network setup for each other computers and network devices are connected to a single cable or backbone and this backbone is coaxial cable the computer`s connected is cable using special connectors called BNC which are also known as T-Connectors one of the advantages of the bus topology is that it is very chip and easy the implement however the disadvantage of the bus topology is that a requires that the cable be terminated at both ends using terminators in order for this setup to be main operational the must have been any open connections including the ends that attach to the computer`s if a computer removed or added or if terminators are lose or missing then the cable would be open and data with bounce back. and this is known as signal-reflection if this happens dataflow would be distrupted and this is called the Ring Topology. the ring topology is the type of network configuration were each computer is connected to each other and shaped of a closed loop or ring so every computer on this ring has exactly two neighbors for communication porpuses each data packet is sent around the ring until it reaches its final destination this kind of topology is rarely used today. the advantage of ring topology is that there easy to install and easy the troubleshoot however the disadvantage would be there is just one of these computers goes down or if there was a single break in the cable then all dataflow would be distrupted. and this is called mesh topology. in the mesh topology each computer on the network connects the every other computer on the network so by having so many connections it handles failure very well. Now WINS stand for windows internet name service. And this is used on NetBEUI networks This service is similar to DNS And as you recall, DNS resolves domain names to IP addresses. But WINS resolves NETBIOS names, or computer names, to IP addresses. So if you wanted to communicate with another computer on the same network you would do so by using the computers name and then the WIN server will resolve the name to the IP address of that computer. This is called Network Address Translation, or NAT. And this is a service that is typically used in routers And this is used to translate a set of IP addresses to another set of IP addresses. So for example, here we have a private network. And its using a set of private IP addresses internally. Over here we have the router with its public IP address. And this router is running the NAT service. If a computer in this network wanted to communicate over the internet, it needs to translate its private IP address to the Internets public IP address.
