good morning everybody and welcome back to part two of an ongoing personal project in this series i'm exploring every area in hyrule warriors age of calamity and comparing it directly with its counterpart in the legend of zelda breath of the wild there will definitely be spoilers but we're going through the game's story in order and we'll be avoiding details not learned till later feel free to watch as much or as little as you're comfortable in this episode we'll be covering the first two levels of chapter 2. there is however one asterisk to add on to the prior episode remember the silent princess and zelda study i previously said it was missing in breath of the wild but that's not actually the case there is in fact a single silent princess growing in the wreckage which i'm guessing i already picked up earlier on the same save file with that covered let's officially get chapter 2 started with its first level mifa the zora princess taking place in zora's domain the level begins in the center of the domain facing the southern entrance the pathways of zora's domain are nearly identical between games [Music] so every ramp and stairway seems to be present though some are blocked by new gates some of these gates open over the course of the level but others are permanently inaccessible immediately behind the starting point in breath of the wild is the statue of mifa age of calamity mifa is still alive so this statue hasn't been built yet but the ground beneath the statue is the same to the back is a stairway leading down to a little pond in breath of the wild there's a shrine located down there but in age of calamity there's just some sort of a rock in the middle the inn and shop are present on the left and right sides the inn appears to be exactly identical in 100 years they never moved even a single bottle on the counters the shop is similarly identical though none of the inventory is present in age of calamity apparently the apocalypse did wonders for the economy the items in the back room however are all still [Music] present heading up one of the side stairways to the second floor we can see the goddess statue at the bottom of the stairs up to the throne room the throne room itself isn't directly explorable in age of calamity but we can get a decent look from outside and it appears identical save for the absence of the pedestal on which sits mifa's diary and breath of the wild back on the second floor we can walk to the back room which has actually been changed a bit there are no longer pools in the center of the room with hard flooring outlining where the pools would be at the back of the room and breath of the wild is a stone tablet in age of calamity it's similar in shape but it's just a really big rock the front side hasn't been carved at all yet in breath of the wild this tablet tells a story about some hero named elle killing a lionel on playmus mountain and the boss of the age of calamity level just so happens to be a lionel at the foot of plymouth mountain mifa's diary happened to also mention link killing a lionel on plymous mountain however this is all probably a coincidence link's name is link not l heading back out from this room we pass by the diving mini-game which an age of calamity is conspicuously blocked with a bunch of spikes not the most elegant architectural design but it probably gets the job done back at the southern entrance look at the sides and you'll notice something off the walls surrounding zora's domain are of substantially different height i've got no explanation for this but i'm guessing it had something to do with the devs trying to fit everything in and keep things visible from within the southern bridge things look the same including the latter leading to the domain's bottom upon reaching the end of the bridge the immediately nearby land looks similar but has undergone major renovations there's still a hill to the left but new to age of calamity is a bridge on the right leading to a whole section of level that has been entirely fabricated everything after this point bears little resemblance geographically it basically just feels like a mountainy area with a similar aesthetic if we take a look back at zora's domain we'll see that the water level is substantially higher relative to the domain itself many landmarks you might expect to find reference of are missing one particularly noteworthy absence is the large stone writings i couldn't find any reference to them in age of calamity not even the most obvious one right outside the domain of course it's entirely possible these just hadn't been carved yet at all turning around again and looking south and breath of the wild there's one very obvious landmark the giant bridge called ludo's crossing this bridge isn't visible here in age of calamity however off the western edge of the map you can see a giant bridge in the distance it's absolutely nowhere near the right location but i'm guessing it's supposed to be ludo's crossing scattered around the mountain in age of calamity are several tower-like structures these bear a resemblance to the towers at the beginning of the zora river path and breath of the wild on the north side of inogo bridge there are also several gazebo-like structures in age of calamity often used as enemy bases i don't know of any direct counterparts in breath of the wild there's a puddley area on the west side of the map which though not necessarily very similar based on the map location might be a nod to rallis pond and the puddley area directly south of it in breath of the wild doubling back to zora's domain we head out its western exit the land at the immediate end of the bridge bears resemblance before quickly losing it i do at least believe that the waterfall here is a modified veiled falls in breath of the wild veiled falls is only a small distance south on the same wall north of the western exit and age of calamity you continue along a pathway hugging the outer mountains while in breath of the wild there simply isn't a pathway interestingly though if you climb up the rock wall anyway the geography at the foot of the next waterfall looks strikingly similar the eastern exit bears even less resemblance in the western in breath of the wild notice the path leads directly into a wall with a stairway leading up to one of the reservoir lake stalks this wall is visible at a different location in age of calamity and now the stairway literally just leads to a thousand foot drop we can get a much closer look at the dock area on the other side the eastern section of the age of calamity map features a bridge that goes directly over it the little room with the bed is still present here and seems to be exactly identical as mentioned before the level ends with a fight against a lynel at the foot of plymouth mountain this is likely both a reference to the aforementioned lore bits as well as the lionel the player is heavily encouraged to encounter in breath of the wild at pointless mountain's peak the area where you fight the lionel itself doesn't really have any landmarks but it's close enough to its counterpart after the main segment of the level is done you play as mifa piloting varuda letting us get a view of the area at a slightly bigger scale turning around makes it immediately obvious our exact location we're at the south east dock of the reservoir lake the northwest dock which we looked at in the main level is visible on the opposite side though you might notice something off the bridge we were standing on no longer exists despite us having been standing on it less than five minutes earlier i can't wait to see somebody in the comments try to explain this one with time travel turning back around the layout of the land here actually looks almost identical in both games though with the very obvious addition of a canyon going through the mountains where in breath of the wild is a giant waterfall just before entering the canyon turn to the left and you can see the northeastern dock in exactly the same location in both games on the other side of the canyon the geography we walk on doesn't line up as nicely but is still recognizable as the northeastern edge of the mountain range though now we're on the outside this next part is probably my favorite ansara's domain because absolutely nobody is gonna notice this unless they're directly looking for it look over the right wall and outside the level pantry you can catch a glimpse of what is clearly anchel island and tingle island weirdly while these were originally in the ocean there's now a mountain range off in the distance finally we can place the end of varuda's path at an exact location in breath of the wild this rock wall with a little tunnel going underneath it's in the same spot in breath of the wild where of course you can walk straight through the tunnel with sora's domain explored the next level is to rook the goron hero taking place on death mountain the level begins north of the southern mine facing the bridge that functions as its northern entrance attention was definitely paid to keeping the geography here roughly similar the bridge now has an archway over it and will be seeing similar new architecture throughout the entire map on the opposite side of the hill on our right is a rocky goron base in breath of the wild the same spot is home to a monster tower to the right side of the bridge is a steep slope leading to a lava river in the distance in both games you can see the same sunken giant bone however the bridgeway on the right side is missing from age of calamity the geography of the southern mine is also extremely similar just with a lot more structures built inside the pickaxe-shaped rock notably has a much larger base and is connected to the other rock formation nearby the southern exit leads directly to a completely empty pathway in breath of the wild but an age of calamity leads to another gore on base and the pathway now immediately turns to the left which doesn't happen in the breath of the wild path until much further the right end of the lava river leads to a similar tunnel in both games the left end however is a dead end in breath of the wild and what seems to be a totally new explorable pathway in age of calamity looking closer though i don't think this pathway was entirely made up i believe this is an adapted gorko tunnel where in breath of the wild you did the rock roast delivering shrine quest the map lines up almost exactly with the majority of age of calamity's pathway tunneling through breath of the wild's rock wall the top of the hill looks nearly identical blocked path to the right and rocky hill upwards to the left and though the nearby signs aren't the same kind they're in similar locations in both games in both games the hill here leads up to a split path heading west and east following the eastern path we pass by a lava fall on the left and gorko lake below us a little further down the path we also pass by darb pond after this point i can't find any clear landmarks to match up the paths up till it loops back to the southern mine sorry but the true final resting place of the goron rock concert hall may forever remain a mystery let's head back to the level starting point north of the southern mine where we can now progress further north both games feature the same rocky path with lava on both sides take note of the bridge visible on the other side of the right which the lava passes under that bridge leads directly into goron city there are some new structures including a monster fort just before the bridge which lets us get a good view of the goron carving left of the entrance almost all the pathways in goron city are still here though all but the center path are now inaccessible with junk blocking the way or the bridge is broken [Music] so i did find one pathway that doesn't exist in age of calamity one which circles around the item shop all the buildings are visible and from what can be seen are nearly identical inside a few landmarks are the clothing store the inn the item shop [Music] some random house [Music] the boss's house [Music] and the goron statues overlooking the [Music] city [Music] i would like to note the statues look much less refined in age of calamity though it's difficult to tell if this was intentional to show the statues hadn't yet been completed or if it just comes down to the difference in how the games render them the bridge at the north exit is still here in breath of the wild it leads to shea mossaw shrine in age of calamity it leads to a goron [Music] base [Music] now once again in both games we circle around the goron statues fight some octa rocks and reach the abandoned north mine only a small section of the area is accessible to us the section immediately attached to the entrance it shares a similar shape in both games but is more sunken into the lava and breath of the wild there are still islands further out there but in age of calamity they're far less numerous and less detailed [Music] with the mine explored we continue circling the statues entering a tunnel through daruk's armpit [Music] notice there's some scaffolding up near the daruk statue it's likely pretty new considering daruk isn't even dead yet i also really want to point out just how near identical the view of death mountain's peak looks from here up a little ways we reach the goron hot springs the ground is more level in age of calamity but otherwise everything is in the same locations if we head through the southern archway both games lead to the split path we encountered earlier with gorko tunnel and gorko lake instead let's head down the last path of the level following the railway on our left with lava falls near it looking out to enjoy the view you can see the same skeleton in the lava below and on the left side though the path is missing is a little alcove where dakako shrine is found in breath of the wild at eldon bridge we can see the cannon yanobo uses off to the right side though in this game daruk is fully capable of lowering the bridge without assistance speaking of we can get a good look at the bridge's bottom before it falls in both games some creative liberties were taken on the last stretch of path leading up to death mountain making it much more open than the cramped breath of the wild path [Music] [Music] we can see the path continue in the final area where we fight the igneotalis but it's inaccessible in age of calamity marking the end of the level also in a very interesting case of the devs playing fast and loose with geography in age of calamity the battle arena is decently huge while in breath of the wild it's roughly half of a square foot the varudanya piloting section begins near death mountain's peak and unfortunately i couldn't find many landmarks that matched up breath of the wild's peak doesn't have any pathways up here and just has a bunch of steep rocks so creative liberty was definitely taken to make a playable level i do wonder if this might actually be somewhere else on death mountain transplanted though if anybody can find any landmarks please let me know we're now two levels into chapter two with three more remaining we'll dive into those levels and punch a bird in the next
