associated students it is my pleasure to open today's festivities this is a joyous occasion and we share your excitement and pride to ensure that everyone is able to enjoy today's festivities we ask that all graduates remain in their seats throughout the ceremony except when called by name to the stage we must also ask for the safety for of everyone you keep your face covering in place at all [Music] [Applause] it is now my great pleasure to introduce heather latinmeyer dean of the connie el lurie college of education at san jose state university [Applause] hello everyone and welcome back graduates let's hear some noise to get this celebration started [Applause] we are absolutely delighted to see all of you this is our final commencement ceremony of the 13 ceremonies that have been held this week for the classes of 2020 and 2021. it is clear from the energy in the room that we have saved the best for last [Applause] after an abrupt departure from campus in march 2020 all of us here at san jose state have been eagerly anticipating your return we truly hope the celebration today will prove to be worth the wait as a symbol of your unique place in san jose state's history each participating member of the class of 2020 is receiving a gold white and blue recognition cord to wear as you cross the stage there's a lot to get to and i know our graduates are all anticipating the moment when you can walk across this stage so let's get to it to continue today's commencement exercise please join me in welcoming san jose state university's president mary papasian thank you dean latimer and hello class of 2020 welcome back we we've missed you what is it been 18 months since we said goodbye but never out of our memory and we are so delighted to be able to celebrate with you today and i'd like to express and extend warm spartan greetings to all family members and friends faculty and staff and everyone else who is here to honor and celebrate the achievements of our 2020 graduating class now i'd like to begin tonight with our land acknowledgement the san jose state university community recognizes that the present mwakma olani tribe with an enrolled bureau of indian affairs documented membership of over 600 is comprised of all of the known surviving american indian lineages aboriginal to the san francisco bay region who trace their ancestry through the missions santa clara san jose and dolores during the advent of the hispano-european empire into alta california and who are the successors and living members of the sovereign historic previously federally recognized verona band of alameda county furthermore the san jose state university community recognizes that the university is established within the tamian ohlone speaking tribal ethnohistoric territory which based upon the unratified federal treaties of 1851 to 1852 includes the unseated ancestral lands of the molecular oloney tribe of the san francisco bay area some of the enrolled molecular lineages are descended from direct ancestors from the tamiya elon a tribal territory whose ancestors had affiliation with mission santa clara the san jose state university community also recognizes the importance of this land to the indigenous mwakmaulone of this region and consistent with our principles of community and diversity strives to be good stewards on behalf of the mewakma olone tribe whose land we occupy now graduation is always one of the most important times on our academic calendar and no more so than this particular occasion it is a moment when we celebrate and honor our students for the culmination of their studies and for some the end of their academic journey at san jose state before stepping out into the world to make their mark it is the moment that officially affirms the completion of a milestone that forever will impact your lives and the lives of future generations and impact those lives we know you will our class of 2020 is undoubtedly among the most resilient and dedicated cohorts ever the grit and determination you displayed especially in the face of so many challenges was just remarkable and the character you have shown bodes well for your futures and for the positive and lasting imprint you will leave on society i congratulate all of you who earned your degrees in the midst of such unprecedented and turbulent times you truly are a class for the ages now in total nearly 2 000 students from the classes of 2020 and nearly 3 700 students from the classes of 2021 plan to participate in commencement ceremonies this week and mark this momentous occasion and we are so happy to have all of you back with us today let's give you all a round of applause [Applause] i want to recognize members of the united states armed forces both at home and abroad some likely are watching this ceremony right now on our live webcast and i'd like to say to all of them please know that you are with us you have our full support and we look forward to your safe return home to your families and friends let's let them know our deep appreciation with a very warm round of applause [Applause] in addition i'd like to recognize the seven san jose state students being commissioned into the u.s air force having completed their undergraduate degrees and rotc programs as part of the class of 2020. let's give them a round of applause [Applause] and finally i'd like to recognize our honors students students graduating laude with praise have each achieved a cumulative grade point average of not less than 3.5 in all college and university work students graduating magna laude with great praise have each achieved a cumulative grade point average of not less than 3.7 in all college and university work and we also have some truly outstanding students graduating summa laude with highest praise these students have achieved a cumulative grade point average of not less than 3.85 in all college and university work congratulations to our laude magna laude and summa laude students will all of our honors students please rise to receive our applause [Applause] congratulations and well done on a sadder note two members of the class of 2020 passed away and would have received their degrees from san jose state the university has approved the conferring of their degrees posthumously the families of janella hui don lu and nabil usman hair are with us today it is an honor to posthumously confer a bachelor of arts in history to nabil and to confer a master of arts in speech pathology to janella vice president for university advancement teresa davis is presenting the degrees to the families who are seated to the side of the stage [Applause] i'd like to take this opportunity to introduce members of the platform party you will not meet at the podium graduates they are here to honor and celebrate your accomplishments i'd like to name each of them ask that they each stand if they are able when their names are called and remain association president chrissy chang who has a special message for our graduates and newest alumni thank you president papasian graduates i'm here on behalf of nearly 300 000 spartans to congratulate you on this momentous achievement earning your degree in is a commitment in the best of circumstances earning your degree in 2020 took grit smarts hard work and resilience to teach this to reach this point in your life we are proud of you for your accomplishments your stories are part of the san jose state story in everything you do tell your story with pride sharing your story can inspire other students who will follow in your footsteps you possess the power to change your lives use it so on behalf of san jose state university alumni association and our graduates worldwide congratulations class of 2020 on your accomplishments go spartans [Applause] thank you christy and i i just want to say um these are alums so i assume you're all members of the alumni association you don't have to answer but let me just let me just tell you you would you are one of a group of 300 000 spartan alums who reside not only in every corner of our community and our valley and our region but truly around the world it's an incredible network and i guarantee you you will run across spartans in places you least expect use that network be a part of that wet work it will open doors for you and then join the alumni association give back you already are role models and mentors for the students coming up behind you so really wonderful to see all of you class of 2020. but now let's get on with your graduation and celebrate i'd like to offer a few remarks to the class of 2020. today is truly a day of celebration one you will remember for the rest of your lives all of you have worked so hard to earn your degrees and i know it hasn't been easy especially in those final months but the fact that you stared down all of the challenges pivoted to online in a weekend and are standing here today ready to hear your name announced as a new sjsu graduate should make it all the sweeter today we also celebrate and recognize those instructors advisors tutors and mentors friends and classmates who help make it all happen but perhaps most of all we want to acknowledge and thank your families now i have three brothers and along with my mom and dad i know i wouldn't have been where i am today without their love and support and i'm sure each of you i know each of you has a very special story as you think back on that moment when it just seemed so difficult and you wondered if you'd make it through and one of your family members or a dear and a close friend was there for you helped you through it and saw you with the support you needed so that you crossed the stage today so how about it class of 2020 shall we make some noise for the family members and all of your friends here today [Applause] now you're the last of 13 and and i know that you can let it all out you waited 18 months how about a really loud thank you because they've waited too let's try that one more time [Applause] that's the way now earlier i called this class of graduates a class for the ages and i can't think of a more apt way to describe all you have overcome and how you will be remembered for decades and indeed for generations to come i want to leave you with a passage from the great eleanor roosevelt one of our nation's most significant and accomplished first ladies she was also an important activist diplomat and a very shrewd political figure in her own right it was she who once said and i quote her yesterday is history tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift that is why they call it the present now what a beautiful and poignant message to you this class for the ages especially as we head into the holiday and gift giving season so congratulations to all of you here today to the graduates to their friends and family to the faculty and staff members who helped make it happen congratulations to you all your work now at san jose state is history at least for the time being tomorrow is indeed a mystery as mrs roosevelt said but one that undoubtedly you will solve in the years ahead so for now graduates enjoy the gift that today the present represents unwrap that gift with gusto and with pride you deserve it job well done congratulations [Applause] i'm delighted now to turn things back over to dean latimer for her congratulatory remarks and to begin the official conferral of degrees thank you president papasian i agree wholeheartedly that our class of 2020 is one for the ages and a class that we will remember forever we've all been through what we hope is a once in a lifetime experience together and we will all remember your remarkable resilience in the face of adversity no one associated with this university will ever forget what you have achieved and overcome you are shining examples of what it means to be spartans as many of you know last year san jose state university was ranked as the number one most transformative university by money magazine graduates that recognition for our university is because of you you define what it means to be transformative you will shape and change the future and you will make our communities our cities and our society better thank you for committing to that work this commencement ceremony is also special because it is president papasian's final commencement ceremony as president of san jose state i'd like to pause for just a moment to acknowledge and recognize president mary papasian for the work she has done for this university for the past five and a half years she has championed our students invested in our faculty and staff and elevated the profile of san jose state she was instrumental in positioning san jose state to be recognized for a transformative work and she has laid a strong foundation for our spartan community to thrive for years to come some of you may not realize that one of the main reasons why we're here this evening is that president papasian reintroduced fall commencement at sjsu when she came on board back in 2016. she felt that fall commencement ceremonies would enable our mid-year graduates to be honored just like those students who traditionally take part in commencement ceremonies in the spring so now all of our graduating students even those of you who officially graduated all the way back in 2020 have the opportunity to be individually recognized and personally congratulated on the platform please join me in saluting president papasian for her work here at sjsu with a big spartan round of applause [Applause] all right and now i'm going to step into my teacher role as a former high school teacher and provide a few instructions momentarily we will invite each of our graduates to cross the stage a professional photographer there they are we'll provide we'll capture images of each graduate and provide these images to the graduates via email after the ceremony i encourage each of you as you're walking across the stage to savor this moment pause on the footprint sticker here in front of the podium smile for the camera your moms want you to smile for the camera and then remember to check their your sjsu email after the ceremony for that photo we ask that our family and friends remain in your seat so that all may enjoy the proceedings we also
