football we're at clemson today for the orange and white game and dj uengala lay's already directed the tigers on an eight play drive and give them a seven nothing lead just better than four minutes gone and bo collins his old high school teammate from st john bosco out in southern california on the back end of the catch and just like that roddy orange seven and white nothing and uh we're getting ready to see tyson pumachan in the white offense here in just a moment i was excited or i think impressed is the better word i was impressed to see the way the orange offense ran the football kobe pace had a nice start to the game dj uinga lalay a lot of short passes but was very efficient i don't think there was an incompletion on that drive and then beau collins being able to finish on a third and six against a veteran cornerback right we see exactly why the coaches are excited about the talent that they have across the board yeah a lot of depth and wide receiver we've already told you about the emphasis on the offensive line dj uh younger lay four for 428 yards kobe pace 50 yards on three carries pretty strong start for the orange on offense lemansky hall who coaches the defense handles the orange today and dabo swinney's got eric mclean with him well this ought to be a good afternoon of of inside emac it's going to be a lot of fun coach that was an impressive drive i mean you've got a guy in kobe pace marching down the field 50 yards and then that cali to cali connection for the touchdown there that's pretty special yeah that's uh that's what we've seen all spring uh you walk out here i'm walking with you i'm gonna let you walk out here uh we uh we've seen that from 20 all spring and uh he just kind of carried over his practice out here great job a couple rpos two or three rpos called in that drive and great job by dj receivers made some nice plays and a heck of a catch by 80 and a good finish for that young young high school senior out here first catch touchdown he's supposed to be in prom but he's coming to play in the spring game instead uh-oh got a penalty right here five yard penalty still first down who was it by the way by the way i'm a little surprised mclean mclean takes the field with dabo and we have a false start in the offensive line i'm stunned yeah well you know i try to not be the center of attention but i think i distracted some people being out here grisham over here got a delay in the game on his first snap i mean you were telling us about his draft and you weren't too impressed with that i'm surprised i'm surprised all right we got a little pass play right here a little quick game let's see what we got here everybody going man coverage across the board one safety got to have fade route conversion oh didn't put it on top of it didn't put it on top of it people are very excited about i mean he's got the size obviously very raw as a football player he has made unbelievable strides since he got here he's still got a ways to go but he is a he is really a freak of nature when it comes to what his potential can be and right there tyson just got to put the ball either back shoulder to put it on top of him where he's got a chance to make a play that's one of my pet peeves as a receiver coach i'm on the quarterback side we got to touch the ball no doubt they can't touch it they can't catch it that's right you got you guys were all excited about it joey joe and tyson pumacha i was excited about lynn j dixon on that blitz pickup right in the hole stymie in the linebacker that was fantastic yeah he's he's he's tough as they come and uh seasoned vet really understands what he's doing got it off all right a very very quiet three and out for the white on offense and tyson pumachan getting the word of instruction from the head coach we're going to get more with dabo sweeney and eric mcclain orange is taking the early lead seven to nothing on a uh opening drive that uh resulted in uengalile going to beau collins for a 14-yard throw and a couple of penalties sidetracked the uh the white squad there roddy yeah you got the penalty on first down before you even run a play and then you rush for no gain uh after that and it really put them behind the chains made it tough for tyson pumachon to get in any sort of rhythm yeah bearcats will be called for at the 37 and we get a timeout at clemson margin white game underway [Music] refinancing with splash saved me a lot of money there were no applications dj ooey young lay with kobe pace still in the backfield we've got a little early movement up front and eric mclean also here's your man brian brazier number 11. five yard penalty still first down a lot expected out of the acc defensive newcomer of the year from a fall to go roddy the crazy thing is all we heard from the clemson contingency is how much better he has gotten this spring that's going to be scary for acc defenses ball is loose pace couldn't control it and they scoop it up on defense with sheridan jones great play by the corner on the field side yeah it all starts with the pitch a little behind kobe pace and that could be one of two things in the spring that could be a bad pitch by the quarterback it could be a bad track by the running back as well either way the ball ends up on the ground sheridan jones scoops it up about to read away he's supposed to be non-contact he shoves jared and jones out of bounds so blussfield territory start here for the white on offense on their second possession guys eric they got it at the 36. maybe no gain on the play there lynn j dixon a guy that's patiently waited his time to take over the mantle as rb1 now with travis etienne gone it looks to be his his job but the competition has been fierce pumichan cuts it loose and incomplete and joe joe the intended receiver the young man from alberta in canada first third and long that we've seen from the orange offense excuse me from the white offense second third and long from the white offense excuse me and the whistles will blow that might have been guys he's doing a little dance right in front what do you think of that first s that's root that's your boy y'all better learn that name he's uh he's gonna be a great player he's another one of those guys like a joe that uh has more than just a unique name he's got a lot of potential and he's going in he's been here two years was hurt a lot last year and nobody really knows who he is but he's got a problem these next few years so excited about him good to see him make a big play right there will spires who is but spyers has been here nine years dabo he ought to be able to do stuff like that right hey hey hey it's a developmental game you know i keep it better let me play six or seven i would have too that's right i kept telling him i was getting better i'm right there with you coach right there with you that sixth year oh man i'm going to wear mac out matt can't keep up with me look at him he's loping already look at him man look at that hey coach is on the run man i can't keep up with him i'm too agile y'all put a dang old well down here to keep up with me ball at the three and dj after the turnover coming out situation right here okay hey matt used to love this coming out drill put the ball in the one a little coming out situation you know you know why i love this so much because i wanted 99 plus yards on that box score that's what i wanted second and nine here for the orange on offense and cuts it loose to the far side and the catch from mengata another catch for rengada quick reminder to you next saturday we got two acc spring football games for you roddy and i'll be in raleigh get a look at dave dorn in the wolf pack at one o'clock then at five matt berry mike golick jr and katie george will be in tallahassee to see mike norvell in florida state two spring games for you starting at one o'clock next saturday on acc network and always on the espn app all right third and three here fellas that's what we got here we got a little bit of short yardage third and three you're looking quick outside there it is and hey guys you have a tight end that's six seven 280 pounds you get him the ball that's what you do jalen lay the catch and a first down coming off you know he had he had a decision to make right there on third and three nice job getting us in the right play and a good conversion good to see jay lay have a nice nice first down conversion right there he's a gonna be a sophomore and a guy we got high hopes for all right i'm gonna take a shot right here mike that's normally what you do after you convert it we like to take it over don't take a little shot right here it looks like we got a little balance quarters look let's see what happens here they're going one safety problem see guys and this is the interesting part is to call these sacks and as an offensive lineman as an offensive lineman you hate that you're like that's the head coach don't ask me coach i think dj would tell you that's not a sack either i mean you got the defensive lineman falling in the backfield he stepped around it pretty well coach it's because he got tackled holy number 77. that's what you call it for the goal repeat is that mitchell mays emac what's the story here that's that's mitchell mays out there he's a younger guy you know he's got the body he's got the size but he's he's got to figure it out i mean he's going against some some more daddies up here now this isn't just some regular defensive line i mean you're talking about the all-acc defensive rookie of the year a guy in xavier thomas who i mean a five-star bonafide that's just kind of growing into his own and it's uh it's a tough thing for a young guy out there trying to go against these guys eric let me ask you a question do we have some indifference here between the head coach of the orange squad limansky hall and his former college teammate at alabama here do we have do we have any kind of differences there might be some uh yeah you know they might need to have a little discussion after this game okay seems lemanski hall did not want the sack it is second and 15 here louie angela lay just misses in ghada inside wow i'll tell you what he mack that looks like you know that was me that was me yeah yeah i know it was rowdy i mean wow that that just shows you the arm strength that we unglaze has obviously you'd like to see that complete and be on the same page as the receiver both of those guys kind of saying hey that one was on me but saw the arm strength their ball explodes out of uhlay's hand now third and long guys and that will be a sack heck of a play by thomas there's one thing that you can you can kind of guarantee wes and roddy when it's third and long and coach venables defense feels like it's in a good spot he's bringing it and he's going to try to get after you and that's exactly what happened right there especially on the third and 15. you know that the quarterback's either going to have to get the ball out of his hands quick because you're not going to have enough to pick up a blitz like that and venables off the edge getting a little coaching up from coach sweeney after he gets the sack it was nicely executed by that white defense what sure was seventh plays is the punt still a 7-0 lead for the orange and there will be well there was a return a scoop on the return tigers worked their way back orange leads seven to nothing will continue in a moment help seriously i'm too young for hair loss clemson spring game on acc network presented by geico tigers see the orange squad with a seven nothing lead on the white but the white squad getting ready to start for the second time in plus territory and there is the first year running backs coach of the clemson tigers and a bonafide clemson legend c.j spiller and boy he's got a great room to work with roddy and his first years running backs coach he does and that room could not learn from a better player than cj spiller i mean that was a bona fide dude tyson pumachons first throw and almost intercepted nate wiggins almost came up with the rock nate wiggins the coaches gushed about him when we talked to them this week and makes a great break on the football that ball a little thrown to the inside of a joe and joe but wiggins has got to finish come on freshman you got to finish the play that's a nice job of jumping the route you got to haul it in right there and then it's green grass oh foot race nate wiggins had had five interceptions in live work and he almost had one there as you get a look at chesmar lucy the junior from naples florida carrying the ball and here's a quick look at what clemson has from a depth chart position at running back loaded is what they have lynn j dixon obviously the most experienced at the top chesmalucia guy that showed last year perfectly capable of coming in you've got darian rancher as well some experience with he and kobe pace guys that have been in the program but the two guys at the bottom phil moffa and will shipley very exciting prospect whistles blow and complete pass on an overthrow of joajo okay eric what's the insight i tell you what guys when you're bringing a linebacker blitz like that you better get the ball out you can identify it quickly you've got to swing that thing it's been interesting the two defenses here kind of running the scrimmage and doing a big job kind of keeping these guys in check outside of that first drive yeah you're right three and out it is again well and i think i think the big difference on that first drive guys was the orange team's ability to run the football i mean michael dukes did all of his damage on that first drive here is a punt from spires and it will be downed right around the 11 or 12 yard line so we get another look at uh dj uingalalay here in the orange offense that has kobe pace as roddy mentioned who got off to a great start on that opening drive and then bo collins the touchdown catch and we're going to see hunter helms now for the first time the freshman from west columbia south carolina and he's got will shipley in the backfield with him in atlanta these are important reps too wes this quarterback room is thinner than what dabo sweetie is accustomed to after puma it's going to be and almost picked my goodness kade denoff who's got a frame at 6'5 and has put on about 15 pounds to 240 here almost had a tip and a score how about the athleticism he sits he reads it once he identifies the swing pass goes up and hits and bats it down you said it almost had an opportunity to score there's shipley getting a yard just lowered the shoulder and drives it up field reagan up shaw on the stop for the tigers on the white defense a lot expected out of will shipley eric he's a special talent and when we talk to these coaches about will shipley they say hey the speed better than advertised the explosion is there coach what do you think of this young running back in will shipley he he's he's better than advertised he's going to be a great one it's going to be a great one clean got it all you need to bruce hit gonna be a great player he's he's uh he he's incredibly dynamic we got a penalty here who was it i don't know is that safety you couldn't tell who that was he's incredibly dynamic i mean he can return catch the ball 15-yard penalty way ahead for a high school kid and he can fly uh i mean he can absolutely fly he's and he's a great kid he's going to be he's a great teammate you know guys like him he he's going to be a fun one to watch over these next few years for sure excited to excited to see him have some opportunity today has kind of the blueprint really been laid down with what you guys did with travis etienne this past year just using him as wide receiver in his high school tape yeah well you know you can go all the way back to cj spiller you know how we love to use the backs and do dynamic things with them but you know travis had to grow into that travis came here really just handing the ball and he had to learn all those other aspects pass protection route running defen all those things and he he left here as a complete player this kid is coming in with a with a with a complete foundation you know he's done it all in high school so it's very natural for him uh he's played in similar a similar scheme and you can see his power right there but he can run between tackles he'd get on the edge you know we can we can scheme him up in the in the passing game like we did travis so he'll be a he'll be like i said a complete player early in his career uh for the tigers there's no question i think it's it's interesting to see when you lose such a dynamic player such an impactful player like travis etienne and it's kind of running back by committee as soon as i get right here on this hot swing right here let's see we're here now he's late gotta give it to him gotta give it to him late great so we gotta we got a young quarterback in here hunter helms and he's holding the ball right there he's he's locked in that ball's right now it's it's it's sneak to back and he's got to get rid of it hunter hunter hunter quicker it ain't there i had a little rpo right there handing it off good job by the day is a walk-on kid here and a good good player good young prospect that uh has a chance to develop for us uh he's done some good things with his reps this spring we've only had three quarterbacks out here so he's done a good job taking advantage of his opportunity that's what i wanted to ask you is in a year that it seems like you are very thin at quarterback i mean how important is it for quarterback three to really prepare like he's the guy yeah very important and we got we got a couple guys coming in here this summer that we're really excited about that we think is going to really help us here we are again another another rpo right there little zone reed you just see 20 he just moves the change but how about this offensive line so you know mitchell mays red shirt freshman john williams red shirt freshman trotter sophomore brian tucker red shirt freshman and then big j mac he's a he's a red shirt junior this is this is this was our backups last year all true freshmen right so we got a lot of young guys that have really grown up this spring i think that'll be the most improved area on our team where we can you know have 9 10 11 guys ready to play each game talk to us a little bit more about jordan i remember on the coach's car just very excited about him his growth as a leader becoming the guy looks like he's swinging over to left tackle he's a right tackle a year ago yeah this guy's this guy's strong as a bull he's incredibly athletic you remember brandon thomas he's a lot like brandon he's incredibly versatile he can play left tackle right tackle he's longer than he is tall he's very long uh but a great athlete can play anywhere and a guy that's that's gonna that's gonna have a career after clemson as well really excited about jay mackin right there he's done a great job leading this group too and he's our he we've got we've got one senior we got two juniors uh and uh the rest of them are freshmen and sophomores so a lot of development going on in this group and with some guys in and out this spring it's giving a lot of guys more opportunity and when they're going against this type of d-line we have they get exposed quick and they get better and drew sweeney by the way nice catch on the back side for 8-1 in the orange coach we're gonna have more with coach sweeney when we come back it's 7-0 the orange truck first don't change that channel we'll be right back do you have a dark garage that needs more light or one lonely bulb up in your attic or down in the basement we've also got damo sweeney the head coach of the tigers miked up we get ready to go to quarter two and still keeping an eye on this offensive line and rodney and eric i've been impressed with what we've seen so far the combinations really on both sides even though the defense has managed the opening 15 minutes probably a little better than the offensive side yeah you're talking about an offensive line last year that really went six deep according to the coaches they're looking to develop that depth coach says here is fourth and one to start quarter two fellas and kobe pace no helms kept it uh-oh the description i see look see hey look west coast coach trying to tell us this is why you don't do quarterback run they're going to blow an early whistle you're not going to pick it up so that's that's a little interesting you got to trust your running back right there because coach is giving this off man he did tell us that earlier in the week we may not see as much quarterback run because that's a quick whistle as soon as that flag gets bored he's down right right he's getting after him right now he said what are you doing you know i'm blowing the whistle you got to hand it off by the way no surprise 11 in the white getting after it the white takes over and it's 40 still trailing 7-0 and that is chesmal cutting up the field junior from naples florida who had 100 yards roddy i want to talk about big tate over here left tackle you saw him up close and personal i mean this guy is big man it's good to see him up close he's a guy that you think can play every position right i really do and coach sweeney said the same thing i saw him play against img academy down the field but i saw marcus tate play against img academy the premier high school football factory in the country just watch he's got he's got excellent movement skills he's a big guy for a freshman in length so he can play outside he's wide enough to kick inside i think he's got a really bright breech in here it's going to help this team this year say what he was building against mercy good job yeah he's got the body i'm gonna get coach's thoughts here on him because he's very excited about this young man when you see marcus tate a guy that's playing left tackle right now he's got very sweet feet what do you think the future i mean he's a multi-position guy what you don't ever know about anybody but especially lyman is is where are they mentally how are they going to process things coming in you know physically he's a gifted kid but mentally i tell you he is as sharp as that you're going to find for a high school guy walking in here and he he's uh he's playing left tackle but he can play he can really truly play four positions he's worked guard he's worked left he's worked right but he's done a great job he's been a real bright spot for us this spring uh super young man he's a guy he's the guy we were talking about sorry mac he's a guy that played at nova southeastern university school who canceled their senior season of football so he had to go to true prep a prep school across town in southern florida to be able to even play a spring or a fall season was one of the leaders in getting that done as well off the back foot and intercepted picked off in the secondary by rj mickens uh this looks like it might be from the uh andrew boos school of acrobatics roddy mickens the safety just reading the eyes of pumachan that ball hangs up a little too much in the air and it's a spring saturday eclipse and we welcome you back to the argent light game and monday on acc network a special roy williams retirement tribute starts at one o'clock we honor the 33 years says the head coach 15 of kansas the last 18 at his alma mater in chapel hill and it starts at one o'clock you can only see it exclusively on acc network and on the espn app but our congratulations to roy williams on a remarkable remarkable coaching journey quick throw quick throw off the hands of collins and roddy 900 wins 400 at two different schools by the way only guy in division one history to do that three-time national champion roy williams whatever adjective you want to use about the career of roy williams is is not enough and the way he did it to him is there a more well-respected likable coach that's been that successful in that sport i mean everybody has great things to say about roy williams you got that coach obviously a legend and roy williams announced today that he's retiring he's stepping away from the game you guys did an event actually that west was telling me ran super smooth very just in depth what do you remember about coach williams man first of all incredibly uh uh you know genuine person i mean he's he's he's one of the good guys out there loves the kids he's passionate about the game and one of those one of those coaches that when early on for me really went out of his way to to welcome me and just always been very gracious with his time when i've been around him we've spent some time we've played golf together and uh just a great guy in fact he loves to tell me the story his his first college football game i think it was a quarter it's either 10 cents or a quarter to come sit on the hill he'd come down from asheville come watch the game and uh but he loves to tell that story about coming and watching the clemson games and paying a quarter and sit on the hill but man i have all the respect in the world for for coach williams and you know really sad to see him uh you know retire but super excited for him and and whatever's going to come next and i know north carolina is going to miss him uh but he's he's done a wonderful job in in building his own legacy there to go along with what coach smith did for so many great years there's no question about it again a coach that had done so much for his players on the field off the field he is surely going to be missed by the acc yeah no question eric thanks coach appreciate those kind words as well um hunter helms back out now to run the uh white offense it's going to start from the 43. that opening touchdown drive by ouijangela to beau collins is still the only marker of the game and that throw is offline and that's for the tight end davis allen a lot of folks excited about the big junior from calhoun georgia and we get a look at the orange defense and when we start talking about clemson defense now eric you've had some high compliments and high expectations for this crowd that's going to line up in 21. guys let me tell you something this defensive line that clemson has coming back is on real as we get a penalty full start number 56 offense five yard penalty still second down but these guys are big they're strong they're fast listen when i'm walking around and seeing brian brazie i mean he was big and strong last year that guy has no baby fat he is just totally dominated this spring and that's what the coaches are saying it pops out on film so you imagine how good of a player he was a year ago these coaches are saying he's so much better and we've seen it early on today this is melusi and he will fight across the 45 to the 46. he got tripped up i think that was greg williams off the end roddy it was and look i mean brian brzee and miles murphy got a lot of the the pub last year because of the way they exploded on the scene but let's not forget that tyler davis is coming back as well for his third year and he's a guy that people like last year coming into the season was thought to be one of if not the best defensive lineman in the league as you see the offsides struggled with a lot of injuries last year battled through it consistently it was probably 80 percent at his best and you look at this depth chart i mean that is that is a stacked jump tart with miles murphy brian brzee tyler davis kj henry you've got xavier thomas on there rook o'rourke a guy that we've seen a number of times today this is an exciting bunch look at roddy emac already hammering he's ready hey he's ready i'll tell you another guy that i'm very interested to see his development is kevin swint a guy who is a defensive outside linebacker now he's putting his hand down in the dirt he's got the body type and obviously clemson has been very successful in converting these outside linebackers into defensive end yep kevin swint definitely a guy we're going to keep an eye on and uh here's melusi on the first down eric i want to i want to ask you about a couple guys we're not going to see today one is andrew makuba who uh got banged up earlier this week so we're not gonna see him today and he's gonna fill a role that i think those clemson coaches at least in our visits with coach swinney and coach venables they're really excited about makuba and you can't forget we're not seeing landon xander's we're not seeing nolan turner today when we talk about the heart of that secondary as well yeah it's a special guy and coach i wanted to ask you about this guy makuba with the specialness that he has guys and just the fact that he's a baja coach is going to run away he's he's coaching him up right now he's he's fired up but he was a guy that we heard from every single person about his ball skills coach we're talking about makuba we're not going to see him today but what is what can we expect from number one in the fall man i'm gonna tell you what he is an unbelievable kid first of all when i think about andrew makuba i just think about god's favor because he's the first recruit i've ever signed never met uh until he showed up here you know uh thanks to the pandemic but this is and you know i was concerned you know he had never been to clemson i've never met him never even been to this campus and wanted to commit early one to commit like last august and i wouldn't let him you know because i kept thinking maybe they'd open it up and and i just didn't think it was fair to him and then and then when they said they're not going to open it back up and he's coming to be a mid-year i let him go ahead and commit and we you know i've talked to him a million times but he is he is as skilled at db as we've brought in here this kid is dynamic he's he can play either safety he can play nickel and play dime he can play corner if he needed it great special teams guy great ball skills and and i mean one of the best kids you'll ever meet i mean he is about his business and everything he does he's truly committed to excellence and just super super uh proud of what he was able to accomplish this spring unfortunately got hurt monday broke a bone in his arm so he can't play today but he showed this spring that he's a guy that can help us and coach venables also said he got about 50 snaps at quarterback how does that speak about his versatility yeah and really a young guy just being able to soak up all that knowledge yeah he's a lot like marcus gilchrist the kid we had early in my career here he's uh he can really do a little bit of everything and then how about this dekari collins right here man how about that play great throw by hunter hounds here's wrencher but that's number three jakari collins from down in georgia he he and bo collins uh the collins brothers uh one from georgia and one from l.a both of these young men are way ahead of the curve for freshman wideouts so good to see him step up and have an opportunity to make a play and a great job by hunter he should have hit that corner out earlier when he hit davis but great job coming back making a big play let's see if he can finish this drive for the white team oh we're gonna get seat darren richard yeah a little inside zone right there and uh you know good job finishing downhill nice job by jake tack venables on the tackle there i want to stay on the wide receivers there as you bring them up e.j williams has been a guy that we've heard a lot about with just the strides that he's made because do you see him you know assuming justin ross will be back how does that second alpha for you guys this fall yeah he's he's a great talent and he's probably put literally his his best five or six practices in a row together uh super excited about him getting in the weight room this summer it was pretty easy for him but yes he did call it but it was pretty easy for him ronnie it would it would benefit you and your beautiful face to throw that ball earlier that is absolutely right it just that it a little too long you're gonna go deep there if that's the read if that's where you're supposed to go with the ball just go with it now don't wait throw it oh my goodness uh the kick is away and we get a break still seven nothing in the oranges favor oh my goodness back after this how can you get over 30 super healthy fruits and veggies we saw the only score of the ball game on the opening drive for the orange dj ouijungla lay to beau collins on a 14-yard throw roddy and it kind of expands our conversation with eric mclean and coach sweeney regarding wide receiver depth on the 21 titans well outside of justin ross who clemson has not gotten fully cleared yet they hope to get that clearance over the course of the summer into the fall outside of him it's extremely talented but but not really that proven i mean sounds it from top to bottom ross the only guy that's really done it consistently in game action and that was a couple of years ago but we've already seen some of the talent with bo collins and jakari collins as well i mean it is it is a group that there should be a lot of excitement about and that will be a sack for tyler venables coming off the left side of the offensive front here and had a hard time even getting set to pull the trigger there with the pressure there's a look at bo collins out of los angeles and of course the uh high school teammate of dj ue youngalay at uh at st john bosco and on the interior there's the tight end jayla lay out of uh riverdale high school and a quick flashback to saint john bosco roddy you had these two guys you had a good chance i think i i would say so how about the pipeline coming from southern california to clemson you get on the lay he convinces beau collins to come as well and that dynamic duo goes from east coast excuse me from west coast to east coast yeah excited to see what they do in the acc third and nine here for the orange see is our winding clock in this second quarter of the orange and white game presented by geico [Music] pretty good looking throw but overthrows the intended receiver joseph and god so that'll be fourth and nine coverage to that second down play it's the second time we've seen jalen lay get involved and and one of the conversations that we had with the coaches tony elliot in particular who's now coaching the tight ends as the offensive coordinator was about getting those guys more involved and he mentioned the fact that this group with davis island jaylen lay braden galloway it's probably as deep a group as they've had in a while very interesting to see how that develops because i think they are going to be a big part of this offense yeah galloway another tiger we're not going to see today here's the punt to the white team and it will be fielded by brown quick reminder to you tuesday night we've got acc baseball a rivalry game in the commonwealth between kentucky number seven louisville dan mcdonald's team hosts the wildcats and jim patterson stadium coverage starts at six eastern acc baseball all season long on acc network streaming live on the espn app and look at 78 keeping stride with the head coach by the way just before the game he said uh the weather made all these steps in today did you so the weather made him think that he wasn't going to sweat today because it's about 60 degrees but he didn't realize he was going to have to run with coach sweeney that's it quick throw this is ej my head coach is always going to get the most out of me guys and he's doing that right now well after you tell your head coach that you made an eagle yesterday he'll be looking for shots to get more out of you yeah he made an eagle yesterday emac got an eagle yesterday isn't that illegal i didn't have a golf simulator a shotgun or something he thought it was a oh here goes lynn j here it goes lynn j dixon into the secondary and across midfield my team's got a little momentum they just got to finish the drive well [Laughter] it's probably like my birdie you know off the tree rolls up on the green but it's a birdie as long as it goes in that's all that matters no pictures on the scorecard coach we were talking about the tight ends earlier and this might be the deepest group that you've had in a while in terms of what they can do what have you seen from those guys this spring they've been awesome unfortunately we had two broken fingers uh galloway and st janice man i'm super excited about sage first of all he's gotten strong it's 250 plus and then brennan stools coming here this is a great young prospect high school senior he's had a great spring as well there's a joe with another nice catch but uh good throw by tyson brennan stool he he's another gonna need a big summer in the weight room but he's a big long kid that can run he's very dynamic galloway's had a good spring davis allen is coming off a great year for us and then you've seen jaylay a couple times today so it's a good group it's a really good group and and uh you know got one senior so we'll try to go sign one more this year and keep that keep that room the way we want it to be so we can be the type of tight-end group we need quick nice job on the printer by our defense will brown the catch coach defense right there nice job will the hang on talking to us was just the the outside was he felt a little soft he said on the defense that's not how we normally play have you seen improvement from that from your guys this spring well we again we're not a complete team but we we have seen some improvement i mean first of all you're not going to be good on defense people run around you you know play good defense stop the run you got to set the edge you got to fit the gaps and then you got a tackle with great passion and great fundamentals it's really that simple hey we on that all right here's the replay i'm just i'm coming fighting oh he's in there he's got a foot in coach he's in tell him coach he's here oh man that right throws in anything about it coach he's just the red flag somebody coach coach he's in boy are you gonna be disappointed wow yeah that'd be disappointing oh boy andrew amazing man is he amazing hey look here coach i'm not going to tell you it's good but it's really good it's really good was it good oh special is that wow what a play roddy how many of those have we seen it's become it's become almost routine for andrew booth you go back to the one-handed odell beckham catch against against virginia the superman catch against pitt i mean this is on a regular basis you see the talent flash of andrew booth and right there i mean if that if this is a game it is reviewed and that is inbound an incredible interception by booth who's got all the talent in the world coach sweeney's over here just coaching his guys up saying where's the challenge what are you doing how about the gamesmanship the declining of the of the delay of game penalty to make him punt it closer i love it yeah all a mind game it's all a mind game boys i you know what i i think there is uh there's something about the matchup of tyler grisham at lemansky hall that fires the engines of the head coach of the tigers to be honest with you mac you know that no absolutely it's all about competition no matter what goes on here i know these guys are fired up well we told you andrew booth now this guy does it ronnie today just the latest all right this is the one against virginia that really put him on the scene he had the scoop and score that really broke the game open against syracuse with johnny on the spot he was physical in the run game as well coming up against bilger kovic going low on the big quarterback and then how about this he's in cover three he sees the post comes over and i'll just lay out perpendicular all right coach how's your man two three did you talk to him dabo yeah i was gonna bring him on live with you y'all come on y'all paying month bills or something got commercials or something going on we hey we were running his highlight reel is what we were doing by the way thank you he said he said he thought he was in too you hey you're the head coach go get it you can get 23 and interview him you're the guy you run the program right emac last time i checked that's right he has all the power that's why i'm standing right here do whatever you want to do you blow the whistle get andrew booth and interview him on the pa system for heaven's sakes that's great coach situation for dj coach what are you looking for out of the quarterback in this two-minute situation just game management you know understand understand the clock understand his timeouts you know oh we got to be able to get that ball out of bounds right there clock's running hey but don't panic here we got three timeouts so just know the situation know where his guys are don't take a sack don't take a sack there's one right at the stick to lay well i'll tell you what he's played pretty well the redshirt freshman from atlanta been heavily involved and let's not forget lemansky hall is the one in charge of those time-outs now coach sweeney's not calling him so saving all three as he uh approaches midfield there's another throw and a big catch is that inbounds for ingata sure is nice job joe joe got a receiver that came in highly touted from california as well has battled injuries his first couple of years hasn't found the rhythm of being healthy and available but man the talent that he and frank ladson who we're not seeing today those guys have and now the experience that they've gained as well is going to be invaluable you got sweeney in the slot here bottom of the screen and dj tried to fire it into the secondary and that's where ray thornton was hanging out will sweeney was the intended receiver with the angle that thornton took to cut that ball off that may not have been the throw you may have wanted the touch to go over the top and had a better at a better job it's obviously tough for us to gauge from here but the way thornton broke on that ball maybe the throw is higher and out towards the sideline so sweeney could run under it kobe pace in the backfield with dj uengeli in the final minute here shoots it to lay tough catch and i mean a tough catch in traffic against mcatee the safety roddy timeout call for by the way by the orange the toughest one and yeah it's certainly a situation where you got to call it check out jalen lay on the outside they go in gotta inside lay outside and he lays out uh not quite a first down big fella but a nice gauge hey emac i gotta be honest with you the tight end room of all the areas we've talked about the pockets of depth with this team i mean no galloway today i know brining stool is somebody they're excited about but jalen lay has really caught your eye in this first half today listen jalen lay is a guy who coach elliott said i need him to step up we need him to be that athlete that he is and that's what he's been able to do today six foot six six seven 250 60 pounds he's a massive athlete and he's able to make things happen yeah well he's making it happen here and you see davis allen braden galloway jalen lay coach told you about the injury to innis and brianingstool the youngster from nashville that they're excited about i just think it's a room with so much complimentary talent lay and davis allen the bigger guys brayton galloway can flat out fly yeah i've seen that burst on the scene a couple of times hard to imagine that they're not going to be heavily involved this year third down and seven here out of the timeout by the orange trying to maybe get a marker on the board before the half pressure coming and overthrown looking for lay again thornton was in coverage and it's fourth down hui started just to go back on the touchdown to collins by the way excuse me eric and he's now 14 and 19 after the income 14 of 19 after the incomplete pass and roddy just to talk about those tight ends and how they complement each other dies you've got the speed you got some blockers all mixed in there it is a very diverse group when you talk about skill set that when you have your offensive coordinator the one in that room coaching those guys up you just have to think they're going to be so 54-yard try for potter is good bt potter from 54. that would have been his longest a year ago he had a 52-yarder on opening night at winston-salem this is 54 yards for bt potter out of rock hill drills it and in the draft coach sweeney was telling us some of the picks were ones that may have made you scratch your head a little bit and i i believe if i'm not mistaken bt potter was one of those yeah that maybe got passed over for another specialist and uh making it pay making the other side pay a little bit on that long one wow so bt potter makes it 10 nothing orange here in the final half minute eric you may have to do some deep dive analysis with the coach on the draft prospects of tyler grisham here in the in the countdown to this spring game today 54 yarder for bt potter and it's 10-0 in favor of the orange fun first half of this game wes and we kind of hit on it at the beginning they split these teams up pretty evenly so you don't take as much stock in what the overall units are doing but the individual performances that we've seen have certainly been impressive yeah the you know the ue angela lay the opening touchdown drive caught your eye for sure right yeah and kobe pace in that offensive line being able to run the football that certainly did jayden lay a guy hear y'all here go here me yes sir hey go ahead hey booth booth booth what do you have to say about that interception uh that's regular he said that's regular [Laughter] i don't know maybe back in the day that that meant routine or something i don't know all right hey this will be interesting this interception wait wait wait we're looking at regular interceptions here on tape cabo we're double checking regular that's okay wow quick throw to ej williams huh you got three timeouts and regular for durham is two different things yes it is i'll buy a long shot yeah long shot count that right all right 19 seconds left grisham's got three timeouts coach all right got to use one right here got to use one all right got to use one all right we go in the locker room come on coach grish come on coach time out offense oh we took one there okay i might ask tyler if we can get a couple more seconds put back on that clock eric yeah you have to i mean they're kind of stealing from a man you call the timeout they don't stop the clock as an offensive guy i would be upset yeah that's that's where the head coach has got to get in his ear and say hey you got to be in that referee's hip pocket calling that timeout right away we've seen the way coach sweeney's not just players it's not just players that are being coached today these coaches are also getting coats oh man tyson pumichan by the way is six of 14. there he goes you got three timeouts and you're gonna get one or two of them at the end of the half yeah yeah i hope i hope dabo told uh grish that you can't take those timeouts and cash them in for retirement funds because that does not work that way sock that's a head pumice whistle for the sock rook aurora there you go ronnie get used to hearing that name he is a guy that is going to make plays he's made him today and apparently he's made them all spring big rook fired up yeah big rook is fired up six four and a half 295 born in nigeria and uh didn't start playing football until his junior year in high school so ten nothing the orange as we uh work our way to halftime of this clemson spring game presented by geico and uh eric mclean [Music] let's see who we got down there coach who you going with eric we got lemansky hall with his first head coaching job coming in coach can you hear me okay oh yeah how's it feel first head coaching job here you've got the lead 10-0 how are we doing hey man it's exciting i saw it's awesome uh really excited for our guys they're playing hard i couldn't sleep last night man just thinking about this opportunity i call all my friends back home and hey guess what i'm a head coach for the spring game i love it when you have that execution you got the two-minute drill the team walks down the field gets those points what does that mean going into this locker room means a lot man you got you go in with momentum we had momentum and we gained it back so that's awesome to go back and uh we got our guys charged up they're ready to play and uh they're doing a really good job today man last question for you what adjustments are we looking at making in this halftime coming out well not a lot of adjustments right i mean i'm sure coach v got tons of them but uh guys just got to execute the calls have good eyes and then just play football that's no doubt the guys over here i think are ready for you west influence on this game i see every once in a while he goes over and tells grish what to do with time-outs have you felt like the walk-on wide receiver from pelham alabama has interfered in your coaching debut today uh hey i'm trying to tell coach sweeney hey man back up i got this you know he's a receiver he's a receiver man i got this i'm on defense i know what we're doing on the outside of the ball thanks lemanski appreciate it all right thank you guys appreciate it oh that's awesome the first halftime interview west oh wow we'll continue with more presented by geico the clemson spring game on acc network that we talk about all summer a top five matchup against the university of georgia in charlotte north carolina yeah the tickets will be scarce at bank of america uptown won't they uh and then you see the september 18th game with georgia tech and then the acc slate begins until they see uconn in mid in mid-november uh the road game in raleigh in late september roddy the game at pittsburgh late october uh scott satterfield and louisville going to have a new look i think really kind of maybe both ways in early november interesting road test for this clemson team it is when you look at the road games the nc states on paper the best team second best team in the atlantic aside from clemson obviously so that's going to be a big one early in the season can he pick it coming back for another year at pitt could be a really dangerous offense and when you look at this louisville team that drastically underperformed what we thought a year ago they turned the ball over a ton made some defensive improvements they've got some quarterback competition there what are they going to look like today in november they'll likely have stuff figured out and let's not forget about wake forest we always overlook wake forest but a good football team at the end of the season but the way this shapes out i mean clemson's going to have they want to set the tone in the atlantic division with most of their acc season wrapped up by the beginning of november well and remember now acc is going back to division play this year and the tigers will certainly be the prohibited favorite not only in the league but in the atlantic division orange leads white 10-nothing halftime continues in a moment can you hear that 10-nothing orange leads the white clemson spring game presented by geico here on acc network with roddy jones eric mclean joins us field side as well he and davos sweeney been fun to kind of get a peek inside as this ball game has unfolded and we get second half for you here coming up in uh just a moment not a lot of action in terms of offensive orange scored on the opening drive roddy and then it was bt potter's field goal in the final half minute defense kind of dictated point of play and uh we'll have the second half for you coming up here in just a moment it is hard to believe when you think about uh dabo sweeney's run here at clemson that it started in the uh 2008 campaign as the interim head coach and for clemson that 2008 interim head coach has become an institution and a legend among tigers was now six straight acc titles how about a peak behind the curtain to dabo's first pregame speech with the tigers talked about last night we're an underdog in death valley are you kidding me an underdog in death valley that's embarrassing what are we going to do about it i'll tell you this too if i could go to the middle of that field right now and they came over and they said okay listen you can be the head coach today in your first game nobody knows anything you get to choose the team i choose this team every time well he chose the tigers that day and who did they play roddy jones and the yellow jackets it's it's awesome to hear him talk like that it's awesome to hear him inspire his guys but all i can think about during that is what i felt in the opposing locker room that was my first trip to death valley paul johnson's first trip to death valley and as soon as they ran down the hill paul johnson said let's go meet him at midfield and we ended up winning that game but the cool thing for me being able to cover the league now and see where this clemson program is is obviously i played in dabo sweeney's first game as interim head coach we played him twice in 09 we played them once in 10. we played him in 11 as a top 10 team we were fortunate to be four and one against clemson but the way that he built it to that point where i left in 20 2011 and what they have done since then has been absolutely incredible it was fun to watch their ascent while i was in college and it's been even more fun to watch them become the premier program not only the acc but one of them in the country as well roddy we touched on this in the open each year you got to kind of tear it down and build it back and our visit this week you really got the sense that they're embracing the opportunity in losing a trevor lawrence and then losing a travis ctn particularly on the offensive side of the ball but they they they relish the opportunity to do this to to make that run again if you will they absolutely do and look dabo swinney told us he goes by the old adage you don't wait till it's raining to fix the leak in the roof you knew trevor lawrence was going to be gone after this year you knew travis etienne being a senior was going to be gone after this year so they have been working to fill that spot for years developing dj ue or any of the guys who were here before him developing lynn jay dixon having him take ownership of that room darion rincher being an experienced guy it's been really cool to talk to them about that transition and how excited they are about it well the orange leads the white by a score of 10 to nothing and let's join eric mclean because he's with the head coach of the white team this afternoon that's wide receivers coach tyler grisham emac coach griss this is your first time as a head coach how's it been it's been interesting it's been interesting a lot of pressure on you know it's been a lot of fun man i really i'm seeing some good things you know to be down 10-0 and to play like we did you know i really feel like we're gonna have a great second half um offensively man we really have to just eliminate penalties got to protect our quarterback a little bit better tyson's got to settle in there and be confident he can do it you know we chose this team because of the offensive line we got to protect better all right no more sacks and then defensively man they're doing a good job all right to be down 10 um to bend but not break it's been really really good we've had one turnover but man we we have to finish what what's out there for us i think we missed maybe three more uh opportunities to get a pick or a fumble and uh and one of those would have been a touchdown all right so i really believe we're gonna have a better second half right here and have some fun doing it no doubt thank you so much good luck in the second half yes sir thank you all right tyler grissom ready to go white will have the ball first when we continue if your credit card debt is out of control if you're in over your head in monthly payments there's a secret the credit card company orange and white game from clemson orange 10 white nothing with roddy jones eric mclean aaron owens is our producer dennis lanius our director great crew with us and uh on this first saturday in april a little bit of a breeze excellent conditions and uh crowd here too orange will kick it away to the white and tyler grisham will get ready to put some of that stuff together he just spoke of to emac about and there'll be no return and white will start from its uh 25-yard line eric you and the coach well guys this is the biggest thing you want to look at here we've got about five minutes until they turn to a running clock so this is where it's super intentional and coach weeney was talking about kind of the format of the game coach when you go to that first five minutes what are you wanting to see here from your guys this first five minutes well so so the first five minutes right here we're gonna uh let if you haven't been in the game yet i want to make sure everybody gets in an offense and a defensive series so we'll let both sides get get that be normal clock and then after the after both teams have gotten guys in who haven't played yet then it'll be a running clock the rest of the way so a little strategy a little strategy for both teams on how they're going to manage that you've got to be intentional with your time because it's going to run out quickly yeah so so that was why the orange team took the ball you know so they had thought that out previously and uh we'll see how it works out [Music] ham green on the back end of the first throw from uh hunter helms and that time green overthrown in the flat so second and ten coming up and you get a look at hunter helms i told you from west columbia south carolina who had two touchdown passes in the win at georgia tech last october in atlanta we got got a little counter right here mike got a little counter oh nice little whoa and here is uh hey we have not talked to midfield i just wanted to ask you about that you see big moff in there i mean that's a big running back yeah so first of all a little hamp green i love this little guy he's a great little young walk-on for us and there's big there there's top there's tur there's a tie herb street but this this running back here phil moffa from down in georgia this is a grown man right here and i love he and shipley coming in here together because they're both dynamic players they're both complete players but they're they're different and they complement each other well it's going to be a really good group good pull right here in the tackle he's down i know it's way too early to say this but a little thunder and lightning is that what you're trying to get at very very much like that uh except except a bigger version of of thunder saying a lot yeah it might be more like zeus and lightning or something i tell you who's had a good day out here that's will spires you know white the white the white team just hasn't had a chance to finish some drives they've made some plays but will spires has done a heck of a job and uh man i'm really glad he came back because i think he's got a real shot you know he wasn't really he was just a quarterback in high school he's got a real shot to develop into a heck of a player there's shipley right there with a little fair catch all right orange will have it guys when we come back leading 10 nothing gatorade zero all the electrolytes zero sugar here's the return of these two cats and linebacker james skowski and baylen spector we won't see either guy today but man are they impactful holy smokes you talk about the institutional knowledge that those two guys have from the number of starts that they've had the big situations they've been in this is one of the best linebacker depth charts you're gonna find in the country with the bruce brothers trenton simpson jake venables an experienced guy as well kane patterson has gotten some really good time as well and this is an exciting experienced group in the middle of that defense kevin mcneil the freshman from tuscaloosa on the carry and he got hit by sergio allen the sophomore linebacker there's a look at that linebacking depth chart with simpson skowsky spector venables patterson bentley and as coach sweeney said you're going to see a lot of guys everybody's going to get reps here in these first couple series for both sides that didn't even include jeremiah trotter jr the five-star outside linebacker who the coaches have raved about just the way he's gone about his business you know it was funny catching up with coach venables about skalsky and how he's kind of the coach on the field as well this dude's playing in five acc championship games he's probably going to play in another one for being completely honest which is most of ac like he's never going to be touched again and he's constantly in coach venable's ear about one thing or another it's great yeah hey roddy oh boy hey roddy you see this this young kid here 34. this is this is story he's a walk-on from tuscaloosa alabama but his dad and i played together at alabama's dad was our start and tackle kareem mcneil great player and you know that time when you kind of get a little break home for the bowl uh uh he was in a really horrific car wreck and was paralyzed and uh there goes drew sweeney right there nice person but he was para he was he was paralyzed and here we are all these years later really getting a really cool experience for this young man to show up kareem's doing great he's doing great and uh he's he's dr mcneill now but uh cool to have his son joining our team this january boy absolutely thanks coach that's uh by the way here's another throw and a bit of a juggle by the way from the redshirt sophomore drew sweeney so we get we're getting that coached up i'm sure later today we'll let his mama handle that one [Laughter] coach you talk about your relationship with with kevin mcneil's dad and and i think the thing that has been incredibly impressive over the course of your time here is is how it's always felt like a family and there's always family connections either with you and your past or your sons being here coach venable sons the two herb street brothers being here just the the family affair just seems to permeate throughout and i think kevin mcneil is another example of that coach yeah no doubt and it's you know this is a this is a relationship driven place and if you look at my staff you know most of these guys we have we have 21 former players on our staff either as full-time coaches coordinators strength guys academic guys paul journey whatever and you know it just it just shows how connected it is but listen it's going to be my 19th year here you know there's a lot of great relationships you you just uh oh oh oh oh oh oh drop almost a pic you know you got all you gotta do is look down in the end zone here and you see christian wilkins and dexter lawrence and cleveland furrow and aj terrell grady jarrett and and so forth i believe they missed that call well they're calling a pick here for sergio allen all right you know what we can't get a pick for andrew booth we might have gotten to make up on sergio allen back after this if you want to be a winner then get a turkey foot lung from subway that's oven roasted turkey piled high with chris veggies on freshly baked bread so let's get out there and get two here at clemson and uh expected to be the top overall pick by the jacksonville jaguars tyson pumachan in the white after the interception by sergio allen in a deep shot down the field intended for allen and here's a look again at trevor lawrence's career at clemson and you combine that with his decorated high school career you're getting a great talent dabo but you're also getting a proven winner aren't you at just about any level trevor lawrence has set a standard of winning that is impressive coach when you look at a guy like trevor lawrence what is jacksonville truly getting with this not just a great football player but a great man a great leader a guy who's going to be locked into his community well he's he's going to he's a guy that just gonna set the tone from the moment he gets there he's gonna set the tone in the locker room he's gonna set the tone in their in their skills and drills voluntary workouts he's gonna set the tone with the coaching staff i mean he's not gonna sit around and wait for somebody to let him know what the standard is he knows what it is and i mean he right out of the gate sorry guys we got a sack right there we got to break it up and shut it down right out right out of the gate he'll let everybody know you know how prepared he is and how and this type of work ethic he'll lead by example and you know that's that's really what i think you need at that position especially for a young quarterback he's not going to look like a young quarterback he's going to look like a guy who's done it for a long time and he's going to be prepared to leave you know it's interesting enough we talk about these generational talents desean watson taj boyd trevor lawrence and now there's another one that seems to be coming in in dj ue uncle delay you stockpiling them what are you doing you're going to share these guys are you keeping them all to yourself well i mean i'm a lot better coach with a great quarterback and so is everybody else in the country i can tell you that uh so you know we try to we try to go recruit good players that's what we try to do and uh but he's a he's another great one there's no doubt about it and super excited about his development this spring and what what what we know we got to go do this summer and and for him to have a chance to be the first you know full-time starter for himself and you saw it last year and what he did in those two games i mean he really displayed his abilities as a true freshman he had a great example you know the cool thing about dj he came here to back up trevor for a year you know that's because he really wanted to watch he wanted to learn that's how much respect he had for trevor and and then he wanted to be a part of our program and he's just a great representative of everything we want to be about here and you know the talent is special but man he's just a he's another great humble young man that's that's all about the right things and got the ability to make plays with his legs and his arm on any given snap so excited about him and tyson's made some great strides too and you know when it's all said and done and we get those other couple guys in here this summer i think we'll have a good quarterback room come august when you talk about that development obviously we saw a small sample size a year ago what does that development look like where has he had to increase his game preparation just being that starter well i think i think i think the biggest thing uh for him is is just you know being a little more verbal you know because now he's been the backup and so really taking that command from a verbal standpoint uh you know and really becoming the leader you know last year he didn't really have to take that on he's just really kind of settling in and that's that's a little more on his plate this year and he's done a nice job with that but just being a little more verbal and then just playing within the system he's a little bit of a gunslinger mentality which you like uh but but just staying disciplined within the system and that'll just come from playing especially getting you know game reps uh in game situations you know he's he'll get more discipline than that but and then and then you know we want him to we want him to uh you know be that guy that that's fully fully committed to being a threat with his legs and his arm because he can do both he's 250 pounds so now it's getting in the weight room really transforming his body this summer and uh coming back the best version of dj ooey underlay that we've seen to this point if he does that we're gonna like the result coach he said something to us in our visit with him the other day that that i found interesting just from from hearing a young guy talk in that he really really talked about leadership value and and his accountability to that leadership and the value of the work he was going to put into it i i thought that spoke of a guy who had been starting two years not just two games last year yeah he's unique i mean and like i said i mean he probably could have gone to 125 schools and started last year but he he's very self-aware and he really wanted to come in here and and be in our program he wanted to work with trevor you know he sees the bigger picture he loves to grind he loves to work but yeah he he wants he knows how important it is for him to set the tone for everyone else and how he goes about things and yeah maybe he doesn't like uh certain aspects whether it be maybe his nutrition or whatever but man he he's he's buying into everything and really leading uh these guys and just growing into that that you know complete player complete man and equipping himself on and off the field with the tools he needs to to be excellent in everything he does so really really excited about his development to this point but it's not even we're nowhere near what he's going to be by the time he's in here a couple of grabs by will sweeney another big catch by joseph and gotta and uhlay is perfect on the drive so far here roddy well you've seen the talent yeah how tight window throw earlier in the drive falling away from the defense the arm strength to get it there the deep ball to tangata who went up and got it it was it's been impressive to watch he can make a lot of unorthodox throws you know that's what i was saying earlier he's a little bit of a gunslinger mentality great tackle by levante bentley there but uh huge play you know what a great he played he put the ball right where it needed to be for in ghana to have a chance to high point it and make a play and you know we didn't have number 10 pretty much all last year he was he had some spot play here and there battled through some growing injuries and ab injuries and man it's good to see him back he's had a great freshman year for us and really just didn't get to do much last year he's had exit spring and you got a chance to see what he could do when he's helping first get tackled oh balls out well they blew the whistle blew the whistle nice play by xavier thomas i tell you if we played by xavier thomas right there yeah yeah we learned anything today guys it's the discretionary whistle eric mclean and it's its impact in this ball game today hey i'll tell you what the quick whistle can be your friend in these situations i promise you that yeah coaching center i want to go back better and i'm a lot better coach with our quarterbacks oh i missed him he had him uh go ahead rodney what's that gun but coach i want to go back to xavier thomas a guy that that obviously got sick last off-season struggled to come back had some issues what have you seen from him in his fifth year that gets you excited well it's just it's just it's just going into his fourth year but he's he's just been available you know same thing i mean he was you know very spotty and he only played like 100 something snaps last year uh did the best he could you know was was not the best version of himself but he's had a really good spring he's been committed he's been locked in he's excited about uh these next four months and having a chance to really go train like he wants to but he's had a he's had he's had a really really good uh really really good spring and uh one that we're really counting on to come back in august you know being the ver the best version of xavier thomas that that we know he can be he does that then we're going to get back to having the type of production and even even not at his best and not playing a lot of snaps he still had i think he was second on the team in sacks last year so you know we all know what he can do it's just a matter of him putting it all together and being locked in well he helped force the pressure there overthrow into the end zone so here's bt potter to try to add three more points to the orange tally and the field goal attempt by potter is good so well we've talked about quarterbacks today and the three you've got on the roster but the legacy that dabo sweeney has seen here at clemson and quarterbacks is uh second to none taj boyd of course 2010 to 2013 from over in the tidewater area then the former red elephant deshawn watson came here took the tigers to a national championship trevor lawrence another georgia arrives here in the upstate and does the same in a three-year run and now you get clemson riding 10 straight 10-win seasons only florida state in the 80s into early 2000s alabama in a 12-year stretch from 2008 to 2020. a lot of that west through the eric mclain era right in the heart of that took that program to the next level but you know there's some within the clemson program that say clemson didn't really take off the way we see it now until eric mclain moved from tight end to that's exactly right for deshaun watson yeah listen listen wes brought that up and i was not the one that said that but it's very true and it very much aligns with the success clemson has had it's a direct quote from tony elliot right there i'll end over and kick there'll be no return here we're in the final minute of the third the clock now running now eric mclean here we are you and dabo sweeney let's just outline this 2015 first of six straight you were the el capitan 46 wins as a player i mean you guys put the bar up there for everybody else huh listen coach this is what we're talking about 2015. i was on the team you were the head coach we kind of started that streak together and you guys have done unbelievable things since then so it didn't happen until it didn't start in 2009 no no do that we're taking 2015. oh we're not giving cj all the credit for everything okay all right oh here goes mafa there goes mafa there it goes there goes mafa yeah he does he's he's got some hips man he's got great vision he's got patience he's got power and he and he can and he can break it he's uh he's coming off a great great year uh down there in georgia and grayson and you know well coached well prepared yes all right final play of the third here we'll let mafa crash on the left side and when we come back coach we're gonna get into the uh that building block that you and emac put together that started this six in a row we'll do it right after this on acc network [Music] help seriously i'm too young for hair loss my hairline keeps creeping back receding presented by geico orange 13 white nothing we go to the fourth quarter with roddy jones eric mclean oh no and our special uh in-game analyst dabo sweeney moving into position i think for a for a very special interview here coming up hard to believe by the way there's a throw down field a big time catch wow a joa joe in stride on the first play of the fourth period it's a man whose game is so nice you got to say his name twice oh joe joe i mean everything that that that has been talked about about this young man you feel like you're just scratching the surface with him and his abilities and as he figures it out he's going to be a national name he's got that kind of talent pumachon on the carry qb run all right let's go downstairs special guest okay special guest what you need to know from shkowski no i want you to go ahead this is your interview this is your interview i want you okay koskowski koskowski it's been a defensive performance today outside of a few plays all right so what do you guys got to do to finish in the red zone here finishing the red zone here many people are trying to do too much we just got to do our job it starts up front the old line we're not we're not helping ourselves at all we got to give tyson some some better looks some cleaner pockets and we can do that man he's going to deliver that's just that's a typical guy typical defensive guy bashing the o-l and that's unbelievable no i know come on we came in knowing we thought we had the the upper hand at o-line and we're letting ourselves down a little i think i do you're here to hear first folks that's straight from the captain's [Applause] [Music] and i guess that was all about it received quarterback i guess he didn't have time to throw let's check out the iso this is against andrew one of the most talented corners not only on this team but in the league it's a fantastic throw by tyson pumachow let's not skip over that and yes eric mclaine excellent protection by the offensive line but if joey joe finishes the drill i can get used to this having a color analyst who understands the schemes and the blocking and gives credit what credits do i need more of that in my life let me let me just say this i am extremely disappointed that we didn't get around to skowski and the role he was performing today and why he was not the venables get back coach this was a perfect day for skowski to be the venables get back coach and we have been really you know denied one of the great moments i think in college football eric i'm going to be honest about that part to be quite honest i feel like that was a big missed opportunity i don't know if that falls on us or on clemson but somebody messed that one up yeah because i mean if this was a day for skosky to be the venables get back coach this was it don't you think absolutely there's no question about it it's good practice you never know what could happen in the season yeah and coach coach venables coach venables probably knew that skowski was going to be on the white team so he assigned himself to the orange team so he could be on opposite sides because he told us this week you know he said he's in his ear constantly yeah well and he look over there and behind venables is baylen spector and see so specter has already cut their specter right there at number 10 right spectre is going to be the innocent bystander skowski would not do that you know that eric skowski would be an active guy there's no doubt about it i think what ronnie said is absolutely true was very intentional will shipley back here going to get a return this one though guys okay let's look at the freshman did not have a fall for an outstanding weddington program and east of charlotte but we get a look at will shipley here just a couple minutes gone in the fourth all right so the uh touchdown catch by a joa joe makes this a 13-7 ball game eric what's at stake here is there any uh this used to be the steak and hot dogs type deal at most campuses in the 70s and 80s what's on the line here today for the winners and the losers well let's go to the expert himself coach what's on the line with who wins or loses they're going to get a friday off with coach batson so that's good you can appreciate that right tell the people about that it's a 5 30 a.m team deal so they get a friday off winning team wow that's a heck of a win that's a lot better than a steak or a hot dog that's a that's a big time prize and there is uh uhlay on the carriage you love those 5 30 a.m you were big one of those listen guys you know wes roddy the same way we're 30 minutes early and we're 30 minutes after everyone has left i like it uh coach i you were gonna start talking about 15 with emac a moment ago before we had to go to break at the end of the quarter and in all seriousness six straight now but to think in 2015 when you put that first one up on the board that that's one of those strong kind of things that i i think a lot of people you don't want to ever take it for granted i know you don't but that first one had to just kind of feel good to move this program six straight acc's how does it feel to knock that out man got me 26 straight acc championships what does that mean to you guys oh it's been special i mean it's it really is i mean we we don't take that for granted we our our goal every year is to try to win this league and we know if we win the league then we have you know opportunities for uh you know in the postseason to do great things so that's where it starts and just really proud of our guys and how they've handled themselves all these teams you know we we didn't have a chance to win six in a row without winning that first one uh which you were a part of at 15. and you know we won that that one in 11. that was our first 10 weeks win season now we've had 10 in a row only reason we've had 10 in a row is because that group at 11 got it going and so every team i think you know has has a has a responsibility to carry the torch and uh we want to compete to be the best you know in in our state be the best in this league and if we do that we got a chance to be the best in the country and uh super proud of all these guys all these teams and how they've how they've laid it on the line how they've represented clemson and uh represented this acc i think another great way of how you guys do that is you start from scratch every single year it's never about what we did a year ago what this team did a year ago talk to us about how you can spread that mentality through your team through your coaches and keep that going each and every year yeah well that's that's a big key you know we call it the windshield mentality you know it's always about what's next it's always about what's next it's it's never what was last year every team's different you know and i think if you have the mentality that you're gonna that you're gonna carry things over you're gonna you're to get exposed quick so we start over truly every area of our program we don't carry anything over it's a new team new journey new new new people new leadership new chemistry and you got and it's new commitment you know you got to pay the toll every single time uh you know greatness never goes on sale and uh we we take a lot of pride and oh got bt bt potter in here uh i saw that punnett nice tackle right there yeah bt working on becoming a three tool guy which will help him at the next level but you know again it's just it's just being committed to the foundational pieces of our program that have that have allowed us to be successful and then getting everyone to buy into that and uh if we do that then we got a chance to be consistent and to be honest with you that's been our goal from day one is to be a consistent program you know i wish we were going to win the national championship every year it's not going to happen but we can be the best we can be on and off the field in everything we do and if we if we stay committed to that we'll have those special years along the way all right so here's the white operating from its 30 coach with eight and a half to go in the game and a moving clock and pumachan dumps it to darion ritcher who's looking for the cutback with a flag down and gary patterson's got a flag i think you got miles murphy the freshman all-american a year ago against the true freshman marcus tate at left tackle and wow tate was holding on for dear life on that one miles murphy's going to win his fair share 10 yard penalty defeat first down there's a look at tyson pumachan of course young man from bridgeport connecticut as we go under eight to play and west with a running clock i know there's seven minutes left but with the running clock this may be the last time the white team touches the football if they're not careful i'm starting to think now there may be a little strategery with coach grisham in his timeouts here as we go down the stretch he got the touchdown to joey joe and now got to take advantage after the penalty on first and 20 and e.j williams a shoe top tackle by carson donnelly by the way sophomore from over in birmingham another guy whose dad played with dabo sweeney on coach stallings national championship team good heavens good job avoiding the big paul teo who's out there on the screen trying to throw a block in the secondary making a nice tackle there's a throw looking for a joe and andrew booth was in defense for clemson i like the booth of joe match-ups roddy wow i mean with with booth and a joe or wiggins and and ladson i mean this is orangata these these matchups that you have with clemson in the secondary and at the wide receiver position i mean think of the old matchups t higgins and aj tyrell every day in practice this is uh it is always fun to watch who clemson has in the secondary because they put out nflers year after year after year and who they have at his receiver as well all right emac third and 20 here and pumachan dials up dakari collins to midfield number 57 yeah i know the young freshman from west lake high school in atlanta dabo you like that don't you i do man he's had a great spring he and bo collins have had a great springs for us again two high school kids coming in mid-term here got to find us a big left guard here he's made plays like that all spring he's he's a finisher that's what i love about him he's a he's a finisher on the ball he's got great collision balance and uh here we go will brown who's also had a good spring for us as well great job on the edge who was that is that nate is that wiggins yeah what a great job by 20. 20 is a 20 20 is a high school senior mid year who's taking advantage of his opportunities we got several corners out and he's really he's really taken away i think he led our team in interceptions this spring as a high school kid so excited about his his future prospects as well but it's good to see tyson man i mean i'm excited about what i'm seeing with tyson here he's competing he's made some nice plays oh boy that's trouble come on will brown trenton simpson and darion wrench are in a collision and wrenches let's hope he's just had the wind knocked out of him guys because trenton simpson is business now roddy at that linebacking spot trenton simpson uh six foot three 225 pounds playing that sam linebacker position that's a position that's incredibly versatile for this clemson team mike jones played it last year isaiah simmons has played it in the past and that's one of the impact positions and in practice like that you you never you never like those types of collisions but i thought trenton simpson actually looked out for his teammate a little bit there going at the midsection doing a nice job of trying to limit the collision with darion rancher hoping that that darian has just got as you said the wind knocked out of him and that he's going to be all right i've been on the receiving end of those and sometimes you just need a minute like look i'm laying on the ground the trainers come out here like i just need a minute i just need a minute down here because uh that was uh that was not what i was expecting yeah third and 11 it will be by the way after the uh the pass and the breakup from simpson darien richard by the way is not only one of the outstanding college football players in the country it's one of the outstanding college student athletes in this country and there's the collision with simpson winner of the disney spirit award his his involvement in just some of the things that went on the clemson campus a year ago is second to none and his impact not only at clemson but in the college game should be really understood right he's an outstanding guy period there's a there's a reason he won that award trevor lawrence became the face of what was going on but darion rincher was the engine behind it his involvement in all of the social issues that went on last off-season as the joe and joe gets another one was the second to non-darien richard certainly a deserving deserving winner of that award yep tyson pumachon a little jump pass here eric mclean yeah yeah and that's what he can do he he can create man he really has great feet he's got good instincts for the game he's a he's a developmental quarterback and i'm really really pleased with where he is he's going to be a sophomore but he's he's got his best football really he's technically he's still got four years left with the rule but i'm really uh excited about his potential in his future but he can create he really can create with his feet and you saw that right there you know they wanted a sack but they didn't even touch him and coach on that one a joey joe comes across settles down and then has the feel once tyson starts to scramble not only to scramble with them but to get up field to separate from the defender how about that from a guy who's still young in his career developing as a player yeah no doubt we we work hard on us here's 26 again good tackle good tackle by booth like to see him wrap up like to see him bring his arms for that tackle uh but but yeah joe that's what we've seen you know he's he's really he's a tough kid he's learning every single day he busted the series before he should have been running out cut and he kept going up uh but but he's he's just he's a competitive tough guy that's really skilled man and he wants to he's coachable he's passionate about it and you know and he's going to be a guy when it's all said and done i think he'll be able to play any position for us he can play any any slot position oh we gotta play here oh chess look at this davis allen look at this ankle oh crap we get a stop with 2 38 to go here on the catch by davis allen it gives us first and goal and pumachan being tended to another look roddy well it's a beautiful throw check out the catch look at that throw just over the hands of nate wiggins davis allen comes down with the catch kumachan unfortunately injured on the play the coaches over there checking them out you hope that it's just a cramp it's not any other any other injury but what a drive that tyson pumachon has put together here they got the ball with around eight minutes left of that running clock wes we talked about the fact that it might be the last time you see the ball converted a third and 20 i believe to to bakari collins that was a beautiful throw he's done a really nice job of competing man you hate to see him being helped off the field like that but it's been a nice day for tyson pumichan if that's the last we've seen of him we wish him a speedy recovery but it's been a really nice day as a cap to a nice spring yep and hunter helms now who has come in the ball game a couple different times the third quarterback uh pumachan was quarterbacking the white team hui unga lalay handled the orange and with pumachan shaken up here's hunter helms now to kind of run this offense for tyler grisham 2 38 to go this moving clock and it's a touchdown or nothing for the white team on first to go after the catch by davis allen here with hunter helms and phil moffa and this feels to me like inside zone laying on that offensive line [Music] there's helm's little shovel and moffa rolls right into the arms of miles murphy you heard from the players you heard from the coaches we picked this team for the offensive line you've got to run this thing straight up the middle here [Music] [Applause] touchdown well well check out the left side of this offensive line marcus tate davis allen caving it in the cutback by phil moff on the inside zone he's able to get in the end zone and we're an extra point away from the white team taking the lead in this one wes it's been a barn burner over spring game how much fun has this been it's turned into one right tyler grisham's halftime adjustment cmac and there's the point so with 158 to go and all three timeouts it is of note now that the orange squad with dj ouijangalalay also has bt potter on their roster roddy he's already had a 54 yarder today for the tournament wes yeah bombed it now we underlay uh gonna have an opportunity to go and win it how great is this this is not manufactured but the situational football that coach sweeney is getting out of this yeah you get your wing on little a in a two-minute drill to end the first half now you've got him in a situation down by one you see uh tyson pumachan and darian rincher both uh leaving the field which a couple speedy recoveries to those guys but but now you've got your your quarterback in a situation that you can't draw up any better in practice 158 three timeouts down by one go get us in field goal range that's exactly what you want all right emac what are we gonna see here you think well this is the thing guys when clemson goes in a two-minute offense they are very efficient moving the ball now obviously the most important thing is getting that first first down once you do that everything else is gravy but these guys are primed for this moment and just like roddy said i mean you can't ask for a better situation in a spring game for the guy who's going to be running your program be quarterback number one to get the ball with two minutes left and go down and win a football game i think early on in this drive it'll be interesting to see which running back comes out west whether it's kobe pace or will shipley probably the most two two most likely but i think you're going to see joseph and gada or beau collins involved early on those out routes to try and get that first first down no return by shipley all right don't forget monday at one o'clock eastern we'll look back at roy williams amazing career at north carolina the last 18 seasons at chapel hill 15 prior to in kansas 900 wins three national titles with the tar heels and one of the most respected and well-liked gentlemen in college basketball history all monday all exclusively on acc network and streaming live on the espn app all right so dj uengalile who's 19-26 for 169 and a td on the opening drive goes to work here this is good class work as they say see what we get in the first throw at jalen lay and a tackle after a gain of five it's one of those that you would love to be able to catch and get out of bounds but clock's still running after coming down inbound got three timeouts here and btw guys don't forget this is a running clock so there's no out of bounds zach's the clock is still gonna run unless they call a timeout by the way that is uh that's trey williams who fought in the backfield another youngster from connecticut big number eight they called a timeout with 127 to go and now all of a sudden emac we're looking at the third quarter back here right you've got third and long you've got a young quarterback in a very adverse situation what do you want to see from him well again you know you need you only need a field goal to win it here so don't try to get it all you've got two more timeouts just just move the chains you'd like to see 85 stay big and get out of bounds right there first of all but just be smart try to avoid the sacks now obviously right there he probably would have ran but we got you know with our rules we got to call him down right there with two hands but he probably would have been able to run for 10 yards to get out but just don't take it on the the unnecessary sack make it make the routine play don't try to get it all in one play and see if you can create some field position you got a guy that just made a 54-yarder on your team so execute within the system play smart manage the game timeout yeah it is that's guys that's what you can't have coach just said it you've got to be aware of the situation and throw it away that's a little bit where that purple jersey creates some bad habits because you know he didn't really have a good angle and he's naturally sliding up but you got to give levin because we're not going to let him die for him and reach and grab him so you got to give him the benefit of the doubt there but but you'd like to see five not have that mindset and just take off right there and let's keep it moving so that's a that's a mistake that that could be avoided and keep some positive momentum going uh because it looked like he had plenty of room to step up 11 and three were doing pretty good job coach fighting the objective here is protect your quarterback get in these competitive situations and sometimes you wish that purple jersey wasn't on as a quarterback i'm sure but uh what like coach sweeney said the objective is to get out healthy while getting good work done and now on fourth and sixteen purple team not only do they have to execute downfield they gotta protect because dj ouijungale has not had a ton of time you got some fire breathers coming off the edge boy look at the two at the top on the left in that front roddy and a throw by ooh and it is intended for in ghana and he almost hauled it in jalen phillips a heck of a play gotta does everything right except for finish the catch uyonda lalay had to let the ball go xavier thomas at his man beef from basically the time the ball was snapped so you got to get the ball out quick he throws it downfield throws a ball that and gotta can bring down just not able to complete it and the white team is going to sneak out of here with the victory how about that unbelievable and had a chance to make a play right there yeah somehow some way number 11 number three pumachan made some big plays but i'll tell you i thought the spark was 26 mafa he really did a nice job of creating some some positive momentum in the run game and how about when you're when your quarterback goes out tyson goes out you get down inside the 10 yard line you just go inside zone with mafa and that offensive line has done a really nice job in the second half of creating some room for him to run and that will be the final play of the game so the white team gets to take a little vacation on the workout eric mclean i'll tell you what coach joey batson i'm walking by him right now and he's saying boys i can't wait to see you in the morning thanks to uh thanks to dabo sweeney for just a wonderful afternoon coach always a pleasure to have you with us for this orange and white game aaron owens our producer dennis lanius our director roddy we got to see quite a bit here of what a uh 21 team that'll have a lot of expectations too and it's an exciting punch with some experience some youth we saw it all today west it was an absolute pleasure yeah sure was great to spend the day with eric mclean as well stay tuned coming up next acc softball continues notre dame's in tallahassee to meet lonnie albeda and number 10 florida state for ronnie jones eric mclean westeroff so long from clemson
