class of 2023 because of the outstanding accomplishments but you're also here because of a DNA your altruism resiliency your curiosity integrity really fits in to the ethos and cultural walk without medicine we are confident that you have what it takes to become thoughtful compassionate and caring doctors were so happy they chose Weill Cornell medicine congratulations to everyone when you put on your white coats the first time today you'll be joining a very noble profession one day carries enormous responsibilities as well as many rewards as doctors in training you're on a path to six relief human suffering promote health and well-being patients will look to you in times of need and literally put themselves in your hands today marks the first step in the path of learning to care for your patients an annual tradition here Weill Cornell medicine is the camp experience hopefully the rain didn't get too hard welcoming incoming students at Ithaca New York thanks to the outstanding organizational and leadership skills of a current medical students the class of 2023 was able to get to know one each other during a supervised wilderness weekend in Ithaca area each year this students initiative emphasizing collaboration and team spirit provides a warm and fitting introduction to Weill Cornell medicine as you probably discovered by now the class has an extraordinary diversity of backgrounds yet residents of 22 different US states China Israel and yes the Northern Mariana Islands and if you like me and your geography of Pacific Ocean as a little kind of roughing distance it's right north of Guam according to google map 53% of women woman wins all the time [Music] [Applause] but the can I hope you don't mind I go off-script sometimes and 23% are from groups underrepresented in medicine we are very proud of that collectively you attended 49 different undergraduate colleges Wow just think about that 49 classes only 106 and I know you came from Cornell University nine of you have earned master's degrees one is a Goldwater scholar and another is a Gates Millennium scholar so congratulations to all of you our class is truly global with students born in 16 different countries that's also very impressive out of 106 students in nearly two-thirds will be linked bilingual for students alumni of our summer research programs including three who attended the travelers summer research program and we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of a travels program and one of you took part in the Tri institutional gateway to the laboratory program celebrate is 25th anniversary both going very strong and very vibrant as you begin your classes and progress in your studies I encourage you to find a mentor a mentor as a role model can help you develop your interests and provides guidance on balancing personal and professional responsibilities you all have advisors and trainers who will make you successful but mentors do more than that you can fill fulfill your potential if we have the right mentoring they can help you navigate new situations set and meet goals and push you to reach your full potential as you gain knowledge and experience you can also be a mentor you can share your insights and wisdom with those following in your footsteps make mentoring a priority as both a mentor and a mentee it's appalling that you must and can accept going forward you may discover a new capacity in yourself and you might start to think about helping others including patients in a new light the second tenet I'd like to review is diversity I challenge you to be a champion of diversity diversity is essentially is essential to delivering better more culturally sensitive care when people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives come together it increases the likelihood of finding innovative solutions to complex problems as a future doctor make a commitment to achieving social justice and equality for all as I express to the graduating students few months ago diversity breeds excellence finally I want you to think about social justice healthcare disparities is a huge challenge we must confront we must do all we can to accept the challenge and to overcome it and that adds to adding not only social justice for understanding the social determinants of of human diseases which are becoming so important you know among our patients finally we know that you'll be stretched in different ways as a medical student and will face a variety of unfamiliar challenges please remember that the dean's office including myself and the education leadership here your teachers your staff and your peers are all here to support you it is important to do well in your studies and what but it's even more important for you to maintain your health and well-being take advantage of the well and wild resources available to you and reach out if you need to talk take advantage of New York City it just footsteps away from East River nice walk for a nice jog you're twenty minutes walk to Central Park you're 15 minutes door to door from all alone lasting through the second Avenue subway through Carnegie Hall or the shows take advantage of that and much more in York City so in just a few weeks the Quarter Quell Cornell Medicine is proud to be hosting its first ever National Conference on medical student mental and well-being b-double agency is co-sponsoring this conference with us and more than 30 leading experts and approximately 300 attendees will convene to identify innovative approaches to supporting student mental health and fostering resiliency all Weill Cornell students are invited to attend if your schedule permits and it will be free up free of charge and please don't convey that to other medical students from other schools again I'm delighted to welcome each of you and every one of you to our institution will have opportunity to speak in smaller groups over the coming months my regular breakfast meetings hot breakfast and your archibald comments or monthly dinner meetings at my apartment with Mary my better half looking forward to seeing all of you congratulations and best of luck as embark on this new phase of your lives now I'd like to introduce this year's white coat speaker dr. Philip steak like the steaks the chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and founder of a brain and spine Center one of New York City's leading interdisciplinary neuroscience facilities there's a world-renowned neurosurgeon with expertise in syrup cerebral vascular disorders skull base surgery and traumatic brain injury is a widely published author and internationally known lecturer and he has consistently been named one of the nation's top doctors by Cassell Connolly is the host of the weekly podcast this is your brain without the field steak actually it's very good I've seen it once and is one of the editors of the definitive text books on a BMS please join me in welcoming that the state will be speaking on medicine is our science and a failure to remember that the state [Applause] augustin thank you thank you very much as I sit here in front of this auspicious group I'm particularly honored each one of them deserve to give this talk much more than I do as Augustine said it's a talk about art science and an affair to remember your parents remember this an affair to remember you might remember Sleepless in Seattle that's how we'll try to tie this all together well good afternoon to all of you and welcome to this really auspicious event thank you for being here I want to start by thanking the Dean and his entire office for giving me the honor of speaking here at this consequential historic and momentous event in your lives congratulations to you and to your parents for the achievements with your parents love and their support financially I suppose as well as your intelligence hard work you have now been admitted to a top ten prestigious Ivy League Medical School located in the financial and cultural capital of the United States and probably the world so if you can't find something fun to do in a tower fall you have my deepest respect and I want to applaud you [Applause] white-coat ceremonies were established in 1993 dr. Choi and I were just commenting when we got to medical school they said the store is that way go buy your white coat yeah this is the this is I think a much better thing we but we would become a kinder and a gentler nation it was initiated by dr. Arnold Gould the iconic ritual emphasizes the importance and compassion the importance of compassion collaboration and scientific excellence in medicine dr. Gould passed away in 2018 but he left the legacy in Child Neurology that embodies and exemplifies these characteristics and most certainly personifies the essence of the Hippocratic oath which will be taking later the spirit of this event is to recognize the honorable craft upon which you are about to embark and to reflect upon the complexity and significance of your decision over 52,000 students apply and 21,000 matriculated in medical school annually as your journey through Medical School progresses most of you will become physicians as a matter of fact Weill Cornell has produced the highest proportion of academic physicians amongst all medical schools moreover we are committed to science as evidenced by wild Fornell producing the largest percentage of MD PhD graduates some of them in my department we're proud of them so yes many of them many of you will become physician scientists beyond that some of you have want to become chairpersons directors of laboratories get into Medical administration's such as Deen ships and hospital administration I've had residents go on to business politics medical education and some notable authors and maybe one of you will become Mehmet Oz the second but always remember medicine is a noble profession it is difficult time-consuming your college classmates are off on Wall Street now I'm making $200,000 a year I definitely but medicine is rewarding is stressful all of these things to the best of your ability you need to embrace all of them even the difficult parts because they are all part of the nobility the diversity of options available to you with this training is invaluable and you need to be open to discovering your gifts and talents until those of you that go into diversified fields this in my view should be booked as personal enlightenment and to be supported within the medical community the opportunities within medicine are also equally diverse and will present you with individual challenges when selecting a subspecialty career path as I like to refer to them the cognitive sports like research internal medicine neurology radiology and pathology attract a very different personality sort and skill set than interventional sports such as surgery neurosurgery interventional cardiology radiology and cardiac surgery as you go through Medical School explore and examine the personalities the lifestyles and the skill sets needed to pursue these sub specialties you will find our faculty most receptive to your mentoring all of the faculty that are that I know of really enjoy teaching medical students but today I want to focus more on what I believe to be the core tenets of medicine I'm a neurosurgeon so I'd be remiss without quoting hearted Cushing a physician is obligated to consider more than the whole person they must view the person in their world when I came here to develop the Department of Neurological Surgery I was faced with some of the same complex issues that you're facing no substantial previous history of a department no previous experience either personal or institutional to draw on so to give form and framework by which the Faculty of the resident so now myself would be held accountable I created a list of characteristics upon which we would operate and they included some of the things that have been mentioned previously integrity collegiality compassion perseverance scientific curiosity technical superiority and leadership so I know what you're thinking is this going to be an hour-long lecture the answer is no okay I'm gonna I'm gonna focus on a much smaller list and this isn't a copy of the list of seven successful four seven characteristics of successful people as dr. Kaplan will attest this is the list that we came up with when we were trying to think about what we wanted to form as a department what we wanted to be identified as so I'm really going to talk upon the character or logic issues as these will be more important to your success and Happiness throughout your life and your profession your innate intelligence unless you're shooting for the Nobel Prize based upon your previous academic accomplishments should not be a limiting factor in your success here at Medical School integrity is the firm adherence to a moral or artistic code I believe deeply connected to our doctor-patient relationship synonymous with character decency goodness honesty probity righteousness and virtue it is the core value we need as physicians in our daily interactions with patients other physicians nurses and all support staff there are many examples in history and today in the news where this state of goodness is forgotten it is essential in all aspects of life Dwight Eisenhower adla Ally forces general and past United States President stated the supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity without it no real success is possible I'm sure your parents have and continue to try to instill this virtue in you that being said the most common cause for failure in medicine is due to a lapse even of integrity Winston Churchill in his eulogy to Neville Chamberlain and arch enemy and nemesis to him to his rise to power recognizes how history may not capture the essence of a person when he stated history with this flickering lamp stumbles along the trail of the past trying to reconstruct its scenes to revive its echoes and contain Kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days what is the worth of all this the only guide to a man is his conscience the only shield to his memory is the rectitude and sincerity of his actions it is very imprudent to walk through life without this shield because we are so often mocked by the failure of our hopes and the upsetting of our calculations but with this shield however the fates may play we march always in the ranks of Honor in this day of global Internet Facebook Twitter and LinkedIn the distinctions between right and wrong are often blurred and the expression doing unto others as you would have them do unto you might always not keep you in good stead as like-minded people can aggregate sometimes the society's detriment this exact as exemplified by extremist groups via the internet remember we are here to add what we can till life not to get what we can from life in addition Osler stated he who studies medicine without books sales on unchartered sea but he who studies medicine without patients does not go to sea at all listen to your patients in my life I have learned and changed I think for the better as a result of them you will find that they care for you as much as you care for them there is no other field like this and I hope that you can learn to love it as all of us have collegiality the cooperative relationship of our colleagues is my way of succinctly stating that you need a high emotional IQ in the workplace we are all experienced in recognising people that can't lead because they get along without collegiality you will have a difficult time getting people around you patients other physicians nurses support staff to help get the job done Ruth Bader Ginsburg states collegiality is critical to the sex to the success of our mission we could not do the job of the constant we could not do the job the Constitution assigns to us if we didn't have collegiality the environment around us has become extremely partisan we can't let that seep into our caring for our patients somebody will at some point in your life here say something that you don't agree with my advice is get over it care for the patient if the comment or action was inappropriate or incorrect first speak to the person directly and privately hopefully resolve the issue after 40 years of working in academia which is a hard business most differences I found are resolved at this level obviously some comments or behaviors are so egregious or persistent that you have to move on so secondly you would take it to a senior member for further discussion common sense approaches to many issues will lead to resolution often most effectively social media may amplify and make personal misunderstandings more difficult to resolve not a smart place to start so aside from a cure what can he what will you as a physician offer most to a patient I would submit that that is hope sympathetic consciousness of others distress with a desire to alleviate it or other words or in other words called compassion is the most effective means to provide hope when I first meet a patient I spend 15 minutes talking with them really about nothing about their disease but who are they are they married are they single do they have children their hobbies do they like sports they what daily activities what are their pleasures what are their stressors and then we finally get in what they're there to see me about I form a relationship with the patient it doesn't take long as long as you give them eye contact in your fourth right this will allow you to phrase your questions and also your opinions in a fashion that number one they will understand but because they like you they might actually listen to and and take your care you can be your patients friends they will often give you the diagnosis compassion with colleagues is also important notice them recognize a change listen to their stressors a smile hello or have a good day goes a long way notice their name I know this sounds simple and trite a skill set often applied in sales and not often enough emphasized in medicine but remember what are you doing you're a doctor you're selling health not only to your patients but also to your co-workers and to ourselves don't worry I'm not going to chastise you for being bad patients as doctors be a positive force in your environment one of the most common reasons people leave a job is lack of a peach appreciation from peers and supervisors providing world-class care patient care is a team effort you need others as a physician you will be a team leader earn and honor the respect of others around you often you will be busy multitasking and distracted take a deep breath people around you want to help if you're nice as Nelson Mandela said our human compassion binds us one to another not in pity or patronizing me but as human beings who have learned how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future to be thorough I have to state that there are some patients that will try to consume your time you will have to learn how to politely let them go and cut off the conversation so where does an affair to remember become important in this talk I hope some of you remember Cary Grant or Sleepless in Seattle with Tom meg Ryan it does happen that medicine becomes a love I'm frequently accusing of having an affair with it we all understand the science of Medicine and can appreciate the art why some doctors are superb diagnosticians surgeons or interventionists they have recognized their talents they have honed it like a professional athlete develop that visceral sense for what is the right decision or the right move at the appropriate time hardwork confidence repetition and introspection help us to develop into master physicians like dr. gold that act emotion and spirit that becomes so natural becomes a part of you during Medical School and then residency you will go hopefully through repetitive actions to achieve your goals through perseverance or resilience as john d rockefeller said I do not think there is any other qualities so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance it overcomes almost everything even nature in this training process which really doesn't stop after medical school or residency your loved ones mom and dad might even suggest you are having an affair with your practice that's okay parents you will note a maturation in your children scientific precision focus confidence articulate and concise communication all the result of repetitive experiences in an area I hope that you find the same passion that I've found all of this will be challenging exciting and as stated earlier stressful some of you won't be the first at something for the first time in your life it's natural to feel anxious overwhelmed and exhausted we are fortunate that our Dean Augustine Choi is very sensitive to these issues students and parents know that we care about both you the student and and their ear relationship with them we will help you grow through the management of these normal human emotions mentoring sports music philosophy and emotional support are readily available throughout the campus success in medicine requires intellectual capacity already proven by you you will also need physical strength and stamina in some specialties but most importantly you're going to need mental toughness in your chosen area of Medicine we will help you segment or divide the subjects into achievable components so it's not overwhelming secondly I believe that we will try to help you visualize what success looks like through example by mentoring and support but most importantly through repetition your mentors should guide you through periods of stress learning emotional control taking deep breaths yes I believe yoga and mindfulness is a good thing you your patients and co-workers will all benefit from this control I will state there's one caveat if you do become a leader sometimes you have to be a little bit emotional and that's okay you don't always have to react men are disturbed not by things but the view they take of them refrain or reframe a negative event and turn it into a positive one when things are going wrong look for small victories not necessarily related to the problems as dr. Choi noted take a run watch the Sun Rise go see Central Park hop on the subway look at the diversity in your class and the most amazing thing to me is the diversity in New York City and amazingly how well we all get along this is good for your morale and it'll be good for the people around you finally find your tribe or your social network and your necessity within that group humans don't mind hardships in fact we thrive on them what we do mind is not feeling necessary modern society facilitates isolation we are social creatures find friends and your role in that friendship you will be fulfilled in summary I urge you to ponder on integrity collegiality compassion and perseverance find yourselves where you can grow and expand find for yourselves where you can grow and expand these virtues personally and as a group again congratulations to you all it is my hope and prayer that you will find medicine other students residents mentors and most importantly your patients the insight into your intellectual and spiritual soul that will enable you to continue to grow throughout your life welcome to the family of wild corners [Applause] Thank You Phil that was really nice coming from a neurosurgeon himself in our profession it is an ancient custom that no one may be admitted into the ranks of physician who has not first expressly accepted his responsibilities as set forth in an oath at Weill Cornell as in many other medical colleges we use an oath that bears the name of Hippocrates in the 2,000 years since its creation the Hippocratic oath has been revised many times to reflect changes in the practice of medicine while remaining faithful to his fundamental values a decade ago a committee of students and faculty met to revise the Hippocratic oath which is administered at the commencement ceremonies the revised oath was first taken a commencement of the class of 2005 and has been used here ever since students you will not take the oath until your graduation nonetheless on this day when you down your white coats for the first time as medical students all really so that all of you can hear it as you listen to the oath I ask you to reflect upon its meaning as you start your course of study here at Weill Cornell Medicine and through all of your years as physicians so the wall of Cornell Medical College Hippocratic oath I do some leave out to that which I value in hold most dear that I'll honor the profession of Medicine be just and generous to his members and help sustain them in their service to humanity that just as I've learned from those who preceded me so will I instruct those who follow me in the science and art of Medicine there will recognize the limits of my knowledge and pursue lifelong learning to better care for the sick and to prevent illness that I'll seek the counsel of others when they are more expert so as to fulfill my obligations to those who are entrusted to my care that I will not withdraw for my patients in the time of need that I will lead my life and practice my art with integrity and honor using my power wisely that whatsoever I shall see or hear of the lives of my patients that is not fitting to be spoken I'll keep in confidence that into whatever house I shall enter it shall be for the good of the sick that I will maintain the sacred trust holding myself far aloof from wrong from corrupting from the tempting of others to vice then above all else I'll serve the highest interests of my patients through the practice of my science and my art then I will be an advocate for patients in need and strive for justice in the care of the sick I turn now to my calling promising to preserve its finest traditions with a reward of a long experience in the joy of healing I make this vial freely and upon my honor I'm thrilled to welcome you into the wild Cornell Medical College family as students and as physicians of the future I was now I'd like to invite that the Charles bark bark is the associate dean of admissions to come to the podium to read the names of each group of faculty coders and the group of students will come to the front of the auditorium our faculty will help our students dawn their white coats and they will also receive the stethoscopes dr.
