what's up aviation guys welcome back to my channel if it's your first time welcome to the channel today i'm doing an update on the cost of ownership of this 2006 cirrus sr22 i did a video a few weeks ago about what it cost to own this cirrus and you guys called me out on a number of things that i made mistakes on or i didn't elaborate on so today i'm going more in depth on the total cost of ownership of this 2006 cirrus sr-22 let's go if you like this content please subscribe to my channel and click that notification bell what it costs to operate and own this 2006 cirrus sr 22. you can buy these planes today from just over 200 000 for a used one up to a little over a million dollars for a new one the cirrus sr 22 has since its inception in 2001 been the number one selling light general aviation aircraft on the market before that the cessna 172 for the last 40 or 50 years was the most popular best-selling general aviation aircraft on the market but the cirrus is sleeker faster sexier perceived to be more safe because it does have a whole aircraft parachute this can be argued or debated that it's safer or not as safe but that's for another debate it was one of the reasons that i chose the cirrus sr 22 over some of the competition and really it was so my wife would feel more comfortable in the plane with me something about a parachute just gives you that security blanket the cirrus cruises at 180 knots and it has a service ceiling of five hundred feet it is powered by an io 550 a 310 horsepower engine i can tell you it's got plenty of horsepower especially coming from a cessna 172. the learning curve was a couple hours to get used to this plane but man once i transitioned i just love it it also has anti icing tks fluid so it's really meant if you get into trouble and you get some icing that it will help you get out of it it's not meant to go into icing conditions that are known but there are some aircraft that do have fiki which is flight into known icing conditions but this one has just got anti-icing to help you get out of trouble if you get in this plane burns 100 load and then last video i mistakenly said 100 lulad was basically like uh kerosene and that is absolutely not true jet a is more similar to kerosene 100 load is really just high octane gasoline or very close to that so sorry for that error in the last video the other thing that i did not explain how i got my reserve numbers you have to overhaul engines and propellers on these aircraft every two thousand hours each plane in each engine is a little bit different but for the cirrus sr-22 the overhaul time on the engine is 2 000 hours and the prop overhaul is also 2 000 hours the cost of the engine overhaul is 33 000 and the cost of the prop overhaul is 3 000 if you are averaging 100 hours per year flying that's 18 per flight hour that you need to reserve in order to cover the cost of the overhaul there is also a parachute that i mentioned earlier on this plane every 10 years you have to repack the parachute and that cost thousand dollars if you're flying one hundred hours a year for ten years that's a thousand hours times ten dollars an hour that gets you the ten thousand dollars there are also air bags in the seat belts and those need to be i'm not sure if they're recertified or if they're replaced every five years that is five thousand dollars and so that's ten dollars an hour to reserve for that one of the big variables when you're talking about airplane cost and cost of ownership is the insurance and that really is based on your pilot experience your experience in the type of aircraft what kind of ratings that you have and how much you're insuring the plane for not only liability but what's the hall value if the plane's damaged what's the value you're insuring insurance for this aircraft cost me 3 800 per year the other variable is hangar cost a typical t hanger is 400 a month this can vary wildly if you get a large hanger it can be thousands of dollars a month if you leave it outside on the ramp it can be 30 or 40 dollars a month but i highly recommend leaving composite airplanes inside a closed hangar because we don't know the long-term effects of the sun on composite yet and better to be safe than sorry airplanes also need to have an annual inspection what we call an annual and this is where they go through a series of checks and tests and making sure that everything is working as it should running properly they check compression on the engines they check all of the components for wear and tear they check the brakes the tires the they check the linkage to the different control surfaces and just make sure everything in general is working as it should they also check for ads which are air worthiness directives so in the past if someone in this type of aircraft has had a mechanical issue or something went wrong they try to figure out exactly what happened and see if it was something that could fail over and over again and then they come up with a fix for it so those are other things that they check during the annual and you also get a mailer if you're the registered aircraft owner to be able to address these air worthiness directives as they come up other cost to operate this aircraft is in cruise this airplane burns 13.6 gallons per hour during the climb phase it's 25 gallons per hour but for most flights the average fuel burns gonna be 14 or 15 gallons per hour you also have maintenance that you have to account for and that's things like oil changes every 50 hours brakes wear out tires wear out and then just other things that can break or need replaced on the aircraft so we reserve for that and a maintenance reserve what we use is 25 per hour of flight time the reserve that i mentioned earlier on the overhaul the props the parachute in the airbag that's 38 an hour our annuals cost us 5 000 an hour subscriptions on an annual basis the gps that we have in this airplane requires an update every month every 28 or 30 days and this subscription through jefferson cost us 499 i also have an app called flyq by seattle avionics and it has all kinds of planning and gps and backup information like radio frequencies and moving map uh electronic log and all kinds of stuff that cost me 399 dollars for a lifetime subscription but you can get it by the year and it's 99 a year starting the other app that i like to use is called for flight and it does the same thing the one benefit that i like about for flight is it does a weight and balance and that also it starts at 99 dollars per year all right so to recap fixed cost insurance is 3 800 a year the hangar is 4 800 a year the annuals are five thousand dollars a year and subscriptions are six hundred dollars a year that's a total of one hundred and forty two dollars per hour or fourteen thousand two hundred dollars per year and that's based on 100 hours a year of flight time the variable cost on average this plane will burn 75 dollars an hour and rising the reserve for the engine props parachute and airbag is 38 an hour and other maintenance is 25 an hour that's a total of 13 800 based on 100 hours of flight time that's 138 per hour so the total cost not including the purchase price of the airplane is 28 000 per year or 280 per hour of flight time and that's based on a hundred hours per year if you fly 200 hours per year then of course the variable cost will go up but the fixed cost will go down because it's divided by 200 instead of 100 please leave your comments below let me know what you guys fly let me know what you love about the cirrus or what you hate about the cirrus and i'd like to know your thoughts on if there's anything that i missed or anything that you'd like me to add and also what you'd like me to review in the future what kind of aircrafts what kind of videos do you guys like you
