Context: rabbi Shmuley Boteach had criticized Hitch’s claim that “by claiming to be ‘chosen’ in a special exclusive covenant with the Almighty, [the Jews] invited hatred and suspicion and evinced their own form of racism” (from god is Not Great). Boteach then argued that the British proclaimed their superiority in various ways such as the song Rule Britannia, and that “no one hated the British for that”. This is Hitch’s reply.
I’ve been hearing some controversy in the UK regarding Rule Britannia. I’m not well informed but from what I understand, some feel like the song should be ceased because of the feeling of supremacy it conveys, and the responses tend to go “the words don’t actually mean that”, “it actually expresses unity”, “it’s national pride and history”, etc. It would’ve been interesting to see Hitch elaborate on his thoughts on the song, especially in the current climate of racial tensions.
Fantastic post, I’ve never seen this one before.
The people who've been loudly shouting for their right to sing Britain shall never, never be slaves, are invariably been the same people who've been loudly banging the drum for various despotic and police state responses to protect the UK from Covid-19. I could take these people more seriously if they actually understood the the words of the song they claim loudly they want to sing.
