our first guest is the artist formerly known as captain america and he's also one of the best tweeters around he's joining us from his home state of massachusetts please welcome chris evans hi chris how are you how are you jimmy i'm good chris i enjoy you on twitter i i enjoy your activities i know you're very politically minded aren't you yeah yeah well i think you know nowadays you got to be right yeah but not sometimes i see a face as beautiful as yours and muscles is bulging and i think this guy doesn't have a care in the world he just wakes up he looks in the mirror to hell with everybody else that's my subtext that's always going on so you started this website and app called a startingpoint.com you'll do a better job of explaining what it is yeah yeah yeah well it's it's designed to well ultimately create engagement you know i think uh i think a lot of people turn away from politics because the landscape itself is a little daunting i think if you hit 25 you know 30 you get a little embarrassed if you don't understand basic issues and where do you go to get that information so so this is a way to try and get uh fair and balanced uh bipartisan information from across the aisle bipartisan information and i've seen it i saw how it works and it is set up very cleverly how long did it take you to get it together uh it was about three years you know we i had the idea in 2017 i brought it to a buddy of mine and uh and then it was 2018 2019 of just gathering these interviews with with elected officials and and pleading with them to uh to participate and then yeah we launched earlier this year you went to washington dc and you asked people in person initially some people thought it was a joke right that this video was doctored or a bot of some kind and it wasn't really you initially everybody thought it was a joke i i don't know what i thought i think foolishly i just thought this such a great idea who wouldn't want to be a part of this you know and i i expected you know i thought the problem was going to be turning people away nobody responded everybody thought it was a joke everybody thought we were somehow trying to prank them so so it took a it took a long time to to build that that bridge of trust so you go to washington and how do you drum up enthusiasm in the first place do you put out flyers that say captain america is on his way uh how do you get uh do you just make calls all the offices are you just centered in a building where they are we we started with emails that were completely ineffective then we jumped to videos thinking maybe if i you know showed my face that might help and then even that did nothing so so again our first trip to dc we probably only had five or six people participating uh and then it was a lot of knocking on doors and telling the folks who did participate please spread the word please tell people this was an enjoyable experience who did you wind up uh getting to participate name some of the people that that you spoke to and who oh god so many yeah we got we got over over two 200 200 plus elected officials tons of times i mean i don't even know where to begin a lot quite a bit now the president you did you ask the president to be a part of this we did yeah we had to and he said what you got it you got to do it yeah um i shouldn't say it that way but yeah we did we asked him he said no he said no twice so i did my part okay president trump said no to captain america just want to point that out for the record um you um who is most helpful from each side republican and democrat i mean everybody was wildly helpful jimmy if there's anything i've learned being in d.c it's uh you know what would i say i you know i i'll say people who were really really impressed people who really actually uh uh kind of blew my hair back uh katie porter katie porter out of the park this was before she had done those whiteboard videos that went viral she she just sharp is attack she really is yeah yale and harvard she's she she's the future um and you know who i actually enjoyed on the right was uh was was john boehner you know i mean him and i disagree on basically everything but uh he was very candid you know he's no longer in office so he he came in and said ask me anything he had no filter and i just appreciated the candor i think i went into it hoping for that level of honesty across the board and sometimes you get platitudes and sometimes you get people who really uh you know say what they're thinking and john was certainly one of those guys is any elected official uh at a certain level invited to participate like what if like like there's so there's some nuts like there's a couple of q anon uh supporters that are running and if they win office will they be a part of your website now this is the real frustration because i i sat with a few people that i aggressively disagree with um if they don't say anything that's you know we have fact checkers so so if they answer a question it doesn't check out doesn't make the website um but but you know we live in this time where if you disagree with someone you think don't speak to them and and the only problem is these are elected officials they're already in office they already got power they they're they're writing bills that affect your life to to pretend they don't exist i think is more pernicious than sitting down with them hearing what they have to say and letting it be you know a landscape of competing ideas so you know sometimes i had to sit there and squirm a little bit and bite my tongue but uh again the site is designed to be uh fair and transparent and if you're in office if you got elected you got it right to be on the site it reminds me a little bit of the way they did the last debate where one person gets to speak and then the other one responds and then if the other wants to respond again and you can just kind of hear them go back and forth they're not interrupting each other there's no fighting going on and the hope is that the hope is that eventually you will get some furniture from your house for your house right that's the real golf yeah in a few years it's a long term goal real american dream we're gonna take a break chris evans is here he needs a trip to ikea we'll be right back for as nervous as we were in the beginning coming back each time to the place we knew to people that were familiar and started to feel like we were doing something that was working and that people wanted to participate in we're gonna have to get to a permanent office chris evans is with us his website is a startingpoint.com uh we spoke about that there you were yeah shaking hands meeting the people who we see on on cable news all the time uh are you did you watch the world series last night or the night no i didn't i didn't i don't know what it is 2020 has kind of kicked my ass i'm normally a big sports guy but i don't know what it is i i i i'm a little preoccupied with with politics i feel the same way it is it's hard to concentrate it it seems more trivial than it is but it was a great world series and the reason i asked that is because i know you're you're a boston guy but i also know that you um you have a dog named dodger that you are very fond of there's dodger right now and not only you have a dog named dodger you have dodger tattooed on your body it looks like we could see the dodd right there under dodger's nose how long have you had dodger on your chest oh god few years now how long did you have dodger the dog before you decided to get his name on your chest not long i mean that's that's probably one of the purest relationships i have yeah that's right i'll never regret that tattoo i regretted a few in my life but not that one was there any talk that dodger might get your name tattooed on his chest oh i already did it he had no choice but um it's nothing to do with dodger dogs like you know the at the ballpark here nothing like that no no no i mean i'm from boston to be sacrilegious to name him after that it's actually it's a far more embarrassing story that i now get to explain every time someone asks me yeah i i you know there's a movie called oliver and company it's a disney movie an animated movie i know it yes grew up watching yes i believe huey lewis sang a song in that movie yes but yeah come on there are some real real i think billy joel was the voice of dodger actually but uh yeah i when i first saw him in the shelter i just said oh man that looks like it looks like dodger from the oliver company and then i i you know after i decided i was taking him home with me i went through the process of thinking of other names and i just i just i couldn't get off to audrey and i just said well i'm not gonna i'm not gonna overthink this one yeah well and he got a dodger now in the house so um uh have you been following the patriots now that your beloved tom brady has has departed as uh if i said i wasn't also following tampa bay a little bit more than i normally will though yeah right that's unbelievable what he's doing isn't it i love it did you have a relationship with him with tom no i got nothing i mean no like i said last time i was on your show i think i i was that was it yeah yeah i saw later i was like man chris you got to start playing it cool this is never going to go the way you want it to you got to act like you don't care you know what i mean that's the foundation how are you going to hang out no no we've not met but it's become such a thing now maybe maybe maybe i shouldn't meet him at this point you know what i mean he's become so iconic in my life and my my sports experience maybe that's just the leader him for tampa now how will you be handling uh the halloween will you answer the door for trick-or-treaters you know i don't know what's gonna happen with halloween i'll go to my mother's house um and they normally i mean it's a great neighborhood it's full of trick-or-treaters i'm not quite sure how they're going to do it i think i think some houses are leaving out bowls and i'm not sure do kids show up dressed as captain america knowing that you're there whether they show up as captain america or not they certainly ask yeah when's the last time you dressed up for halloween uh i mean i i i probably dress up at halloween oh you do what's up all right what about last year uh last year i went as marty mcfly and it was good i nailed it like definitely right down to the walkman i had the whole deal getting the sense that you had a lot of dvds as a kid really vhs jimmy vhs
